    • This study aimed to increase the knowledge about the toxicity of fish-derived organohalogen pollutants in mammals. The strategy chosen was to separate organohalogen pollutants derived from Baltic herring (Clupea harengus) fillet, in order to obtain fractions with differing proportions of identified and unidentified halogenated pollutants, and to perform a subchronic toxicity study in rats, essentially according to the OECD guidelines, at three dose levels. Nordic Sea lodda (Mallotus villosus) oil, with low levels of persistent organohalogen pollutants, was used as an additional control diet. The toxicological examination showed that exposure to Baltic herring oil and its fractions at dose levels corresponding to a human intake in the range of 1.6 to 34.4 kg Baltic herring per week resulted in minimal effects. The spectrum of effects was similar to that, which is observed after low-level exposure to pollutants such as chlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (CDD/F) and chlorinated biphenyls, despite the fact that these contaminants contribute to a minor part of the extractable organically bound chlorine (EOCl). The study confirmed previous findings that induction of hepatic ethoxyresorufin deethylase (EROD) activity takes place at daily intake levels 0.15 ng fish-derived CDD/F-TEQs/kg body weight. The study also demonstrated that hepatic vitamin A reduction takes place at somewhat higher daily exposure levels, i.e. 0.16–0.30 ng fish-derived CDD/F-TEQs/kg body weight. Halogenated fatty acids, the major component of EOCl, could not be linked to any of the measured effects. From a risk management point of view, the study provides important new information of effect levels for Ah-receptor mediated responses following low level exposure to organohalogen compounds from a matrix relevant for human exposure.

  • Business development with electronic commerce : refinement and repositioning

    • Electronic commerce enables business development for marketing channel intermediaries and strengthens their existing operations and strategic management. This research shows that electronic commerce provides stepwise business development refinement and repositioning in the form of process change and increased customer service. Based on marketing and logistics literature, a business development model with three developmental phases is proposed in this paper. The findings are based on the electronic commerce development of three intermediaries providing industrial products and services in the northern European market. Refinement is achieved through a focus on activities for internal efficiency, and through changing processes for increased integration, shorter time and lower costs. Repositioning involves extended focus on service improvements, image and customer tailored services. It is found that electronic commerce has not radically reshaped and developed the role of marketing channel intermediaries. Instead, it has strengthened existing business. Future electronic commerce efforts need to be viewed in a business wide development context, including structural change and reaching new segments or markets, to utilise fully the development potential of electronic commerce.

  • PSD-constrained PAR reduction for DMT/OFDM

    • Common to all DMT/OFDM systems is a large peak-to-average ratio (PAR), which can lead to low power efficiency and nonlinear distortion. Tone reservation uses unused or reserved tones to design a peak-canceling signal to lower the PAR of a transmit block. In DMT ADSL systems, the power allocated to these tones may be limited due to crosstalk issues with many users in one twisted pair bundle. This PSD limitation not only limits PAR reduction ability, but also makes the optimization problem more challenging to solve. Extending the recently proposed active set tone reservation method, we develop an efficient algorithm with performance close to the optimal solution.

    • Silicon–carbon–nitride (Si–C–N) thin films were deposited by reactive magnetron co-sputtering of C and Si targets in a mixed Ar/N2 discharge. Films were grown to a thickness of more than 0.5 μm on graphite and Si(001) substrates held at a negative floating potential of −35 V, and substrate temperature between 100 and 700°C. The total pressure was constant at 0.4 Pa (3 mtorr), and the nitrogen fraction in the gas mixture was varied between 0 and 100%. As-deposited films were analyzed with respect to composition, state of chemical bonding, microstructure, mechanical properties, and wetting behavior by Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy (RBS), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray photoelectron spectrometry (XPS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), nanoindentation and contact angle measurements, respectively. Depending on the deposition condition, ternary SixCyNz films within the composition range 1≤x≤34 at.%, 34≤y≤81 at.%, and 16.5≤z≤42 at.% were prepared with a textured, amorphous-to-graphite-like microstructure. For Si–C–N films with low Si content, C---C, C---N and Si---C bonds were present. At higher Si content, N preferentially bonds to Si, while less C---N bonds were observed. Films containing more than 12 at.% of Si contained widely dispersed crystallites, 2–20 nm in diameter. Incorporation of a few at.% Si resulted in a dramatic reduction of the film surface energy compared to pure CN films. The measured contact angles using distilled water and glycerol liquids were for some films comparable with those on a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), Teflon® surface. The hardness of Si–C–N films could be varied over the range 9–28 GPa.

    • Digital television is a new and interesting platform for developing multimedia services. The MELISA platform aims at cross-media broadcasting over digital television and 3G mobile networks. The platform provides presentation of interactive video content, advertisement and gaming. The devices targeted by these services are Set-Top Boxes and Portable Digital Assistants. A new service, in combination with technology that does not yet allow for very rich interaction, requires careful and inventive design of the user interfaces. The key to gaining consumer acceptance of interactive TV is ease of use. In this paper we present the system architecture briefly and discuss issues related to user interface design, considering both the type of media content and hardware platforms. We reflect on the design process used and its suitability as we as designers have experienced it.

    • Ab initio calculations show that the energy cost for incorporating lattice defects such as pentagons and heptagons is significantly reduced for BCN compared to BN, thus promoting bending of basal planes in these compounds. Boron–carbon–nitride (Bsingle bondCsingle bondN) thin films with a fullerene-like (FL) microstructure were then deposited by dual cathode magnetron sputtering from C and B4C targets. Up to 1 μm thick films were grown at a total gas pressure of 3 mTorr (0.4 Pa) in varying Ar/N2 ratios, and substrate temperatures between 225 and 350 °C. Compositional and microstructural studies were performed using RBS, SEM and HREM, respectively. Depending on the deposition condition, ternary BxCyNz films with fullerene-like microstructure could be prepared in agreement with the calculations within the composition range 0 ≤ x ≤ 53, 15 ≤ y ≤ 62, and 24 ≤ z ≤ 50 at.%. Fullerene-like structures also tend to form at lower temperatures in the case of BCN compared to CN. Nanoindentation measurements show that all BxCyNz films exhibited a highly elastic response independent of elemental composition. In addition, the calculations suggest a driving force for C and BN phase separation.

    • A concept is outlined for how privately deployed local access points can be integrated in a mobile operator's network. By letting the users deploy multi-radio access points, reusing already installed broadband for `last-mile'-access, we can expect significant cost savings in particular for high data rate services with low QoS requirements.  The concept is presented both from a technical perspective as well as from a business point of view, where the network franchise model is introduced.

The purpose of this paper is to use a conceptual model to empirically study individuals assessments of a new web-based customer services system over time. The model consists of three phases; pre-use, test and use. The concepts of value and quality are discussed in relation to the three phases. In this paper an empirical study has been undertaken where data collection has been generated by the means of qualitative in-depth interviews over a period of two years. The main contribution of this paper is the understanding of the difference between the concepts of value and quality being illustrated in the conceptual model. Customers assessment of value and quality could have implications for companies developing new web-based customer services systems

  • Hotade dagaktiva fjärilar i Jönköpings län

    • Sommaren 2004 inventerades 19 olika lokaler, fördelat på två områden i Jönköpings län, efter den akut hotade veronikanätfjärilen (Melitaea britomartis). I ett av dessa områden, Skuruhatt i Eksjö kommun, hittades ett exemplar av arten 1977 och inventeringarna avsåg att undersöka om arten fortfarande fanns kvar. Undersökningen av området kring Skuru hatt visade att veronikanätfjärilen inte längre lever kvar i den gamla fyndplatsens omedelbara närhet. Inga fynd gjordes heller i det andra området, som valts ut på grund av sin närhet till en ännu existerande population i Östergötland. En trolig bidragande orsak till utdöendet i det område som tidigare hyst arten, är att det med sina cirka 300 meter över havet inte kan erbjuda tillräckligt goda klimatförhållanden för veronikanätfjärilens långsiktiga överlevnad. Under inventeringen registrerades även andra rödlistade dagaktiva fjärilar. Totalt registrerades åtta olika arter, bland annat kovetenätfjärilen (Melitaea diamina) som länge antagits vara utgången från regionen. För att få en mer fullständig bild av de rödlistade dagaktiva fjärilarnas utbredning i länet kompletterades inventeringarna med uppgifter från tiden efter 1950 från museer, privata samlare och naturintresserade personer. Det kompletterande materialet visade att ytterligare två rödlistade arter av dagaktiva fjärilar förekommit i länet de senaste 54 åren. En av dessa, körsbärsfuks (Nymphalis polychloros) är, att döma av kontinuerligt inkommande fynduppgifter, fortfarande bofast på två lokaler i den sydöstra delen av länet.

    • We consider adiabatic transport of eigenstates of real Hamiltonians around loops in parameter space. It is demonstrated that loops that map to nontrivial loops in the space of eigenbases must encircle degeneracies. Examples from Jahn-Teller theory are presented to illustrate the test. We show furthermore that the proposed test is optimal.

  • Self-Service Recovery : Towards a Framework for Studying Service Recovery in a Self-Service Technology Context from a Management and IT Perspective

    • The infusion of information technology (IT) into the service industry has been apparent in many respects. Positive aspects, such as greater flexibility, shorter lead-times and the improved use of resources, belong to the advantages gained by infusing IT into services. However, there are some negative aspects as well. Services, by their very nature, are seldom error free. This has not changed as a result of the infusion of IT. What has changed, however, is the role of the customer. Many of the services of today, which have been developed in close association with IT, do not offer customers the possibility to obtain face-to-face help from the service provider. One example is the software industry, where customers very often need to identify the failure, search for a solution and then apply it. And, most importantly, they do this unaided. This study describes the process that occurs when a customer solves a problem with an IT-based service when the service provider offers no human interaction. This process is labelled self-service recovery. This is achieved by developing a framework that describes self-service recovery from a management and IT perspective. The framework is developed on the basis of three research studies, plus additional literature studies.     • This paper addresses the problems involved in service recovery in a self-service technology context, in this paper called self-service recovery. Interviews with both customers and employees about service recovery aspects within a self-service technology context show differences and similarities between those two groups. Contextual issues are also discussed. The results show that a satisfying service recovery requires that the personnel are involved and that although, to some extent, outside the self-service technology context the company provides customers with a satisfying service recovery this is not the case within the self-service technology context of the company

    • Zeithaml och Bitner (2000) skriver att fel i tjänsteleveransen är ofrånkomligt för företag, även om de bedriver ett förstklassigt servicearbete. För att återställa tillfredsställelsen hos kunden efter fel i tjänsteleveransen, bör service recovery användas (Zemke, 1995). Denna uppsats handlar om hur service recovery tillämpas hos en leverantör av e-handelslösningar. Det empiriska syftet med uppsatsen är att beskriva vad som kännetecknar företaget Ehands service recovery strategi och dess tillämpning. Vårt teoretiska syfte är att jämföra företaget Ehands service recovery strategi och dess tillämpning med befintlig teori inom ämnet, för att se vilka likheter och skillnader som föreligger. Vi ämnar dessutom i vårt teoretiska syfte att vidareutveckla service recovery begreppet utifrån vår föreställningsram. I vår teori inleder vi med att reda ut begreppet service recovery genom att presentera olika författares och forskares syn på service recovery. Utifrån den samlade uppfattningen om vad en service recovery strategi innehåller har vi skapat en teoretisk syntes som ger vår syn på vad som bör ingå i en service recovery strategi. För att lyckas med det empiriska syftet, genomförde vi en fallstudie hos Ehand och samlade empiri genom personliga intervjuer med anställda. Empirin jämförde vi med vår teoretiska syntes för att se vilka likheter och skillnader som fanns mellan Ehands service recovery verksamhet och vår teoretiska syntes. De empiriska slutsatserna, som syftar till att belysa det viktigaste från analysen, visade att Ehand idag inte har någon egentlig service recovery strategi, med utgångspunkt från vår teoretiska syntes. Vi upplever att företaget klarar av att identifiera och behandla sina stora kunder på ett bra sätt, vilka är viktiga delaspekter i service recovery arbetet. Hela service recovery begreppet uppfylls dock ej. För företagets övriga kunder kan Ehands service recovery verksamhet liknas vid traditionell kundklagomålshantering, där företagets enda uppgift är att ombesörja klagomål när kunden själv uttrycker sitt missnöje till Ehand.

  • Service Recovery Strategies in ICT-based Service Systems : Information Technology and Embedded Knowledge

    • In this conceptual paper the authors analyse the concept of service recovery in an information technology (IT)-based service setting. A taxonomy of service recovery strategies is presented based on previous research. The four strategies identified: inactive, reactive, active and proactive, are later analysed in connection to service firms learning capabilities, knowledge creation, knowledge use and knowledge embeddedness in their IT-based service systems. It is argued that the use of information technology (IT) and the Internet in particular has lead to a change in the service firm-customer interaction. The customer is not merely a co-producer and consumer of services but (s)he can also be regarded as the single most important knowledge holder and thus an information provider. By integrating firm capabilities and customer capabilities through the embedding of knowledge in their IT-based service systems firms can increase their service management skills and enable a lower rate of bad service performance

  • Större vattensalamander (Triturus cristatus) - inventering i östra delen av Jönköpings län 2004

    • Våren 2004 inventerades 27 områden med sammanlagt 141 småvatten i östra delen av Jönköpings län efter större vattensalamander (Triturus cristatus). Undersökningens huvudsyften var att undersöka den större vattensalamanderns utbredning i regionen samt att identifiera metapopulationer för fortsatt miljöövervakning. En metapopulation är en population som består av flera mindre delpopulationer som kontinuerligt drabbas av utdöenden och vars lokaler, om dessa åter blir lämpliga, kontinuerligt återkoloniseras. Utbyte av individer mellan delpopulationerna i en metapopulation motverkar också inavel. Antagandet om att större vattensalamander är beroende av metapopulationer, innebär i förlängningen att arten uppehåller sig i och kring de vatten i ett område som för tillfället erbjuder en bra lekmiljö och dessutom omges av passande landhabitat inom ett lämpligt avstånd från lekdammen. Som inventeringsmetod användes visuell observation med halogenpannlampa nattetid. Större vattensalamander observerades i 21 av de 27 invnterade områdena (78%) och i 59 av de 141 småvattnen (42%). Resultatet visar att större vattensalamander troligen är mycket beroende av metapopulationer för sin långsiktiga överlevnad. De viktigaste lekvattnen för arten i regionen utgörs av vattenfyllda sandtag/grusgropar, solexponerade kreatursdammar/lergravar och vattenfyllda dödisgropar/skogstjärnar. Resultatet pekar också på att arten är förbisedd i många områden på grund av sin ekologi och att många fler lokaler för större vattensalamander kommer att hittas med den nya visuella observationsmetoden. Förekomsten och tätheten av lämpliga lekdammar i vissa av de inventerade områdena indikerar också att stora områden inom regionen troligen utgör sammanhängande metapopulationer. Exempel på detta är områdena kring Nordvästra Solgen i Eksjö kommun, Saljen/Skirösjön/Övrasjön i Vetlanda kommun och Bordsjön/Assjön i Aneby kommun.

    • Bluetooth is a wireless ad-hoc network concept that was presented in February 1998 by its five original promoters Ericsson, Nokia, IBM, Toshiba and Intel. With Bluetooth, mobile terminals within range of each other can set up ad-hoc connections for both synchronous traffic, e.g. voice, and asynchronous traffic, e.g. IP-based data traffic. In this paper we analyse how well Bluetooth can carry TCP/IP traffic and in particular we show that though the radio channel is very disturbed the TCP Vegas protocol with its flow control mechanism can be carried very well. With ARQ handled at the Bluetooth level, retransmissions are made immediately after a packet error and thus the delays, normally introduced are kept acceptably short. In our model important mechanisms in TCP Vegas as well as Bluetooth mechanisms are modelled in detail and we show that TCP throughput is quite high and delays are kept short for packet error probabilities up to 50% and moderate loads.

  • Tjänsteåterställning i ett IT-baserat självbetjäningssystem : En undersökning av SAS Self Service Automater

    • Under de senaste decennierna har många av de rutinmässiga tjänstemötena, som tidigare skedde mellan två personer, ändrats till att kunden allt oftare själv utför tjänsten. Genom (Informations-)tekniken har detta utvecklats ytterligare, till att även innefatta mer komplexa tjänster. Self Service Technologies, eller IT-baserade självbetjäningslösningar blir allt vanligare. Fel i tjänsteleveransen är ofrånkomligt för företag, även om de bedriver ett förstklassigt servicearbete. För att återställa tillfredsställelsegraden hos kunden efter fel i tjänsteleveransen, bör Service Recovery användas. Denna uppsats diskuterar kopplingen mellan ovanstående områden ur ett kundperspektiv. Undersökningen har utförts hos SAS på flygplatserna i Arlanda och Karlstad. Det empiriska syftet med uppsatsen är att beskriva vad som kännetecknar vårt fallföretags (SAS) tillämpning av Service Recovery i deras Self Service Automater, medan det teoretiska syftet är att undersöka på vilket sätt Service Recovery teorin kan implementeras i Self Serviceområdet. I vår teori inleder vi med att reda ut begreppen Tjänster, Service Recovery och Self Service Technologies. Därefter har vi sammankopplat detta i en modell som speglar vår syn på viktiga aspekter för att återställa kunders förtroende efter att fel uppstått i ett IT-baserat självbetjäningssystem. För att lyckas svara på vårt empiriska syfte samlade vi in empiri genom personliga intervjuer med SAS resenärer, samt en anställd. Empirin jämförde vi med teorin för att se vilka likheter och skillnader som fanns mellan SAS strategi och teorin. Vi har i våra teoretiska slutsatser kommit fram till att Tax och Browns principer för att uppnå en väl fungerande Service Recovery strategi även lämpar sig väl för Service Recovery inom SST-området, dock med anpassningar. Att den mänskliga kontakten mellan kunden och personalen helt eller delvis försvinner, ställer krav på SST-systemet i form av koppling till övrig verksamhet och individanpassning. I våra empiriska slutsatser kom vi bland annat fram till att SAS saknar en väl fungerande Service Recovery inom Self Serviceområdet. Detta anser vi kommer att bli viktigare i framtiden, då antalet användare av automaterna ökar. Service Recovery tillsammans med Self Service Automaterna borde kunna implementeras i organisationen, då SAS Service Recovery strategi i övrigt fungerar på ett tillfredsställande sätt.

    • Jönköpings län innehåller en stor del av landets kalkfattiga ängs- och hagmarker, en naturtyp som globalt sett är ovanligare än hävdade marker i kalkrika trakter. Detta innebär att regionen har ett speciellt ansvar att se till att denna kraftigt minskande naturtyp bevaras. Genom att övervaka förekomsten av dagaktiva fjärilar och utnyttja deras känslighet för förändringar i hävd och miljö syftar detta projekt till att bidra med information om hur vi bäst skall bevara regionens torrare, kalkfattiga ängs- och hagmarker. Övervakningen sker med hjälp av en linjetaxeringsmetod som utgår från Pollard & Yates (1993) på sammanlagt fem ängar. Alseda, Vagnhester, Störestorp, Högakull och Rusarebo. De tre förstnämnda är betesmarker medan de två sistnämnda är slåtterängar. De fem ängs- och hagmarkerna har inventerats 1999, 2002 och 2004 med avseende på dagaktiva fjärilar. Varje lokal har besökts tre gånger per säsong med cirka tio dagars mellanrum. Under de fem år som övervakningen pågått har totalt 45 arter av dagaktiva fjärilar observerats, varav 7 är rödlistade (Gärdenfors 2000). Troligen har antalet arter och individer på de olika ängarna påverkats kraftigt av varierande vädermässiga förutsättningar i regionen under övervakningsperioden och det kan därför vara svårt att dra definitiva slutsatser ur materialet. Resultatet pekar dock på att slåttergräsfjäril, Maniola jurtina och allmän metallvingesvärmare, Adscita statices, gynnas mest av hävdade torrängar, vilket i förlängningen innebär att dessa arter kan ha en funktion som indikatorer för denna ängstyp. Vidare indikerar resultatet att en betesmark med sent betespåsläpp och extensivt mulbete gynnar flest arter av dagaktiva fjärilar i regionen.

    • The new generation of television viewers is currently being confronted and becoming acquainted with a series of technological developments in the realm of consumer electronics and gaming that raise their expectations for similar advances in TV broadcasts. The MELISA platform aims at the cross-media broadcasting of sports events featuring interactive advertising and sports-related games over digital television and next generation mobile network infrastructures. The platform provides services for optimal presentation of complex interactive real time video content, for advertisement and an advanced real-time gaming (betting) engine in at least two different client platforms. User interface design is a major issue in a complex end-to-end solution having to cater the needs of users ranging from broadcasting professionals to end-users. Especially in the case of interactive gaming there are numerous challenges in the user interface design, in order to deliver to all categories of devices (and end users) equal quantity and quality of information. In this paper we present the overall system architecture and philosophy and then focus on user interface design issues both for the routine work of broadcasting professionals as well as the end users, owners of different types of consumer devices (such as PDAs and interactive TV Set Top Boxes).

    • Communication systems using multicarrier modulation suffer from a high peak-to-peak ratio, PAR. In this work we use the tone reservation approach to PAR reduction, where a subset of the tones are used for PAR reduction. We derive a bound on the achievable performance under a PSD constraint on the transmit signal. Using this bound, we show that as long as a moderate reduction performance is needed, this could be achieved with an almost arbitrary selection of the PAR reduction tones. This bounding technique also demonstrates that, applied to an ADSL-like system, the tone reservation approach could be used for PAR reduction down to about 12 dB, considering critically sampled signals

    • Control of the cooling system in heavy vehicles, with the objective to minimise energy consumption, is studied. Control actuators are electrically driven cooling fan and water pump, and the electrical generator. The problem is posed as a constrained optimal control problem with feedforward from measurable external variables. The design is based on a simplified model derived from physical principles. It is evaluated through simulations with external variables collected from measurements. The results show that significant energy savings can be obtained.

    • Models that can be used to analyse the fuel saving potential of electrically driven auxiliaries in heavy vehicles are presented. With the purpose of evaluating the influence on fuel consumption from various concepts and control principals, a model library is developed in the modelling language Modelica. The library contains a mixture of models developed from physical principles and models fitted to collected data. Modelling of the cooling system is described in some detail. Simulation results are compared with measurement data from tests in a wind tunnel.

    • Mobile work situations within home care of the elderly require immediate and ubiquitous access to patient-oriented data. We intend to develop a mobile information system that provides correct information in a proper way to the right person in the appropriate occasion of care. This requires a thorough user needs analysis that so far often has been neglected during systems development in health care. We conducted the user needs analysis in interdisciplinary working groups in order to achieve a holistic view of the entire work process. This allows for the development of not only patient-oriented but care process oriented systems. In this paper, we describe how the user needs analysis was conducted, the impact of this work on the user group and some of the requirements found to be specific for mobile IT-support for home care of the elderly.

    • The use of metal organic vapor-phase epitaxy (MOVPE) for growth of one-dimensional nanostructures in the material systems GaAs, GaP, InAs and InP is investigated. Some kinetic effects are discussed, especially the general finding that in MOVPE thinner whiskers grow faster than thicker whiskers. Effects of growth temperature on growth rate and shape of the whiskers, the effects of different growth directions on the perfection of the materials and the possibilities to grow heterostructures in axial and lateral directions are reported. Ways to overcome the randomness in whisker growth by controlled seeding of the Au particles and by using lithography for site control are demonstrated.

    • Asperger syndrome (AS) is a mild form of autistic disorder characterised by impairment in social interaction as well as a restricted pattern of behaviour, interests, and activities. Two patients with AS and balanced translocations t(13;17) and t(17;19), respectively, were identified. Fluorescent in situ hybridisation (FISH) analysis with chromosome 17 specific clones to metaphase chromosomes from both patients showed that the chromosome 17 breakpoints are located within a 300 kb region at 17p13. The region spans 14 known genes. The expression of these genes was analysed in lymphoblastoid RNA derived from the patients and healthy control individuals. The CHRNE, DKFZP566H073, LOC90048, PFN1, SPAG7, KIAA0909, ZNF232 and KIF1C genes showed similar levels of expression in cell lines with the translocations when compared with cell lines with normal karyotype. No expression was detected for the MINK, GP1BA, SLC25A11, ENO3, FLJ10060 and USP6 genes in any of the cell lines. The close physical relation of the two 17p breakpoints suggest a common genetic aetiology for the phenotype in the patients. Structural and functional analysis of the genes located around the two 17p breakpoints in t(13;17) and t(17;19) patients may reveal candidate sequences for the AS phenotype.
