  • In vivo and in vitro toxicity of fractionated fish lipids, with particular regard to their content of chlorinated organic compounds
  • 1991
  • Ingår i: Pharmacology and Toxicology. - : Wiley. - 0901-9928 .- 1600-0773. ; 69:6, s. 459-471
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Six different lipid matrices (the intact lipid (IL), four lipid fractions with different polarity, and the free fatty acids (FFAs) obtained by hydrolysis of the triacylglycerol (TAG) containing fraction) were obtained from salmon (Salmo salar) and eel (Anguilla anguilla), each collected at a contaminated and a comparatively uncontaminated catch site along the coast of Scandinavia. The lipid matrices were studied in toxicological test systems representing various biological functions of different organ systems from several species and trophic levels. The results were evaluated with particular respect to the concentrations of extractable organically bound chlorine (EOCl) in the matrices tested. In some test systems, the specimens with a higher EOCl concentration appeared to be more toxic. For example, the TAG containing fraction (F2) from Idefjord eel, having a higher EOCl content than F2 from Oslofjord eel, reduced the number and hatchability of eggs laid by zebrafish. Both IL and F2 of Idefjord eel increased mortality and reduced the oxygen/nitrogen-ratio in blue mussels. Non-polar compounds (F1) from Bothnian Sea salmon induced 7-ethoxyresurofin O-deethylase (EROD) activity in rainbow trout hepatocytes, whereas F1 from Senja salmon did not. F1 from Bothnian Sea salmon also reduced the number of T-cells in foetal mouse thymus anlagen in vitro compared with the cell number in anlagen exposed to F1 from Senja salmon. A positive correlation between EOCl concentration and test response was found for EROD activity in rainbow trout hepatocytes and for ATP-leakage in Erlich ascites tumour cells when testing the phospolipid containing fraction (F4). However, in most test systems the fish oils, irrespective of EOCl content, were of low toxicity, and the observed effects need to be verified in future studies.

  • Kinematics of successful knee prostheses during weight-bearing: Three-dimensional movements and positions of screw axes in the Tricon-M and Miller-Galante designs
  • 1994
  • Ingår i: Knee Surgery, Sports Traumatology, Arthroscopy. - 0942-2056 .- 1433-7347. ; 2:1, s. 50-59
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using roentgen stereophotogrammetric analysis we recorded the three-dimensional movements in six knees with implanted Tricon-M prostheses and ten knees with Miller-Galante prostheses as the patients ascended a platform. Fourteen patients with normal knees were used as controls. The two prosthetic designs displayed decreased internal tibial rotation and the Tricon-M increased valgus rotation. A central point on the tibial articular surface had a more lateral position in the Tricon-M design and a more distal one in the Miller-Galante design compared to normal knees. Increased posterior displacement with increasing flexion was observed in both designs. When the normal knees were extended at full weightbearing the helical axes mainly shifted inclination in the frontal plane. In the prosthetic knees there was a tendency to anterior-posterior displacement of the axes as extension proceeded, especially in the Miller-Galante design. Translations along the helical axes were larger than normal in the Miller-Galante and smaller in the Tricon-M knees, reflecting differences in constraint of the two designs.

  • Increased plasma prolactin levels in a group of men with breast cancer - a preliminary study
  • 1990
  • Ingår i: Anticancer research. - 0250-7005. ; 10:1, s. 59-62
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Gonadal and hypophyseal hormones were investigated in 15 males with breast cancer and 15 tumour referents, on average 1 month postoperatively. Plasma prolactin was found to be significantly more often elevated in men with breast cancer compared with referents (p <0.005). Another group of men with breast cancer disclosed a tendency for lower S-FSH levels compared with the referents (p <0.01). No significant difference was seen between cases and referents regarding S-LH, p-estradiol or p-testosterone. The size of the primary breast tumour was correlated with a higher prolactin level. The findings lend support to a theory implicating prolactin and possibly prolactinomas as a risk factor for the disease in males.

  • Spectrum of Doubly Ionized Neon
  • 1991
  • Ingår i: Physical Review A (Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics). - 1050-2947. ; 43:9, s. 4791-4823
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The spectrum of doubly ionized neon (Ne III), emitted from hollow-cathode and theta-pinch discharges, has been photographically recorded in the 430 - 12 000-angstrom wavelength range. The number of classified lines has been increased from about 100 to about 750, and the number of experimentally established energy levels from 60 to 230. The level scheme comprises levels in the 2s(2)2p4, 2s2p5, 2p6, 2s(2)2p(3)3s-8s, 3p-5p, 3d-5d, 4f-8f, and 5g-7g configurations. The experimentally observed level distribution are compared with the results of Hartree-Fock calculations and least-squares fits.

  • Swedish obese subjects (SOS). Recruitment for an intervention study and a selected description of the obese state
  • 1992
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Obesity. ; 19, s. 465-479
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Department of Medicine, Sahlgren's Hospital, University of Göteborg, Sweden. SOS (Swedish obese subjects) is an on-going intervention trial designed to determine whether the mortality and morbidity rates among obese individuals who lose weight by surgical means (gastric banding, vertical banded gastroplasty and gastric by-pass) differ from the rates associated with conventional treatment. For this purpose, the study is recruiting a sample of obese men and women who constitute a registry of potential subjects from which the participants are drawn. Eligibility criteria for participation in the registry were: age at application 37-57 years and BMI greater than or equal to 34 kg/m2 for men and greater than or equal to 38 kg/m2 for women. Before receiving a health examination, all patients complete extensive questionnaires on current and past health status, utilization of medical care and medications, socio-economic status, psychological profiles, dietary habits, physical activity, weight history, and familial disposition to obesity. Each surgical case is matched to its optimal control in the registry, to ensure that the two groups do not differ systematically with respect to any of 18 matching variables that may affect prognosis. The first 1006 subjects included in the registry have been studied with respect to morbidity and compared with on-going population studies of men and women in Göteborg, Sweden. The relative risks of prevalent disease and symptoms associated with obesity in 50-year-old males and females respectively were 4.3 and 4.7 (dyspnoea), 14.7 and 11.8 (angina), 6.3 (myocardial infarction, males only), 2.1 and 4.5 (hypertension), 5.2 and 6.6 (diabetes), 4.6 and 26.1 (claudication) and 1.7 and 1.8 (gall bladder disease). Correspondingly, obese males and females display elevations of systolic and diastolic blood pressure, fasting glucose, insulin, triglyceride, and uric acid levels. However, total cholesterol was not increased in obese males and was in fact significantly lower in obese compared with reference women. HDL-cholesterol was lower in obese than reference men (data were not available in reference women). The rate of taking sick pensions was over twice as high in SOS obese patients than in population controls. Finally, comparison of measurements with self-reported prevalence estimates revealed a considerable amount of previously undiagnosed hypertension and diabetes in the obese subjects. These data suggest that the excess health risks associated with obesity may not be fully appreciated. PMID: 1322873 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE]

  • Southern travelling habits with special reference to tumour site in Swedish melanoma patients
  • 1992
  • Ingår i: Anticancer research. - 0250-7005. ; 12:5, s. 1539-1542
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Southern travelling habits were recorded for 127 melanoma patients from southern parts of Sweden (the 56th latitude), 55 thyroid cancer patients, 100 non-Hodgkin's patients and 794 healthy controls from the same region. Melanoma patients were found to travel significantly more often south of the 45th latitude, as compared with patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma or thyroid carcinoma (RR = 2.2 for a difference of + 10 trips), and with the healthy controls (RR = 1.4 for a difference of + 10 trips). Considering men and women sepatately, the difference was significant only for men. Patients with melanoma had a higher educational level than the tumour controls and the healthy controls (p<0.001 and p<0.001 respectively). There was a significant correlation between high travelling frequency and high education. An increased risk related to southern travelling was present for patients with melanoma on the extremities and head and neck, as well as for patients with truncal melanoma. These findings support the concept that acute exposure to sunburn may be a risk factor for malignant melanoma.

  • On the vibrational and orientational probing of surface-adsorbates by direct and resonance photoemission
  • 1994
  • Ingår i: Surface Science. - : Elsevier BV. - 0039-6028 .- 1879-2758. ; 311:3, s. 375-384
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Vibrationally resolved direct photoemission spectra of physisorbed molecules separated from the substrate by spacer layers, show remarkable splittings of vibronic progressions. The corresponding resonant photoemission spectra have recently confirmed these splittings and also revealed their strong dependence on the polarization of the exciting radiation. We apply a self-consistent mirror image model on the physisorbed nitrogen and oxygen molecules to explore the origin of these shifts and their dependence on the orientation of the adsorbate molecule with respect to the surface. The symmetry character and orientational probing of autoionization is analyzed for the resonant cases by a decomposition of the interacting matrix elements.
