  • Beyond band termination in Er-157 and the search for wobbling excitations in strongly deformed Hf-174
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics G: Nuclear and Particle Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 0954-3899 .- 1361-6471. ; 31:10, s. 1735-1740
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High-spin terminating bands in heavy nuclei were first identified in nuclei around Er-158(90). While examples of special terminating states have been identified in a number of erbium isotopes, almost nothing is known about the states lying beyond band termination. In the present work the high-spin structure of Er-157 has been studied using the Gammasphere spectrometer. The subject of triaxial superdeformation and 'wobbling' modes in Lu nuclei has rightly attracted a great deal of attention. Very recently, four strongly or superdeformed (SD) sequences have been observed in Hf-174 and ultimate cranker calculations predict, such structures may have significant triaxial deformation. We have performed two experiments in an attempt to verify the possible triaxial nature of these bands. A lifetime measurement was performed to confirm the large (and similar) deformation of the bands. In addition, a high-statistics, thin-target experiment was run to search for linking transitions between the SD bands and possible wobbling modes.

  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 74:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The yrast states in the light platinum isotopes Pt169-173 have been investigated in a recoil-decay tagging experiment using the JUROGAM gamma-ray spectrometer in conjunction with the RITU gas-filled recoil separator and the GREAT tagging spectrometer. Gamma-ray transitions have been established for the first time in the odd-N isotopes, Pt-169 and Pt-173, and the yrast sequences in Pt-170 and Pt-172 have been extended. We discuss the possibility that the weakly deformed yrast structures of Pt-170, Pt-172, and Pt-173 are crossed by a deformed intruder configuration at spin similar to 8h.

    • The exploitation of the recoil-decay tagging (RDT) technique has reinvigorated experimental investigations of the shape coexistence phenomenon in heavy neutron-deficient nuclei. In a recent experiment using the JUROGAM and GREAT spectrometers in conjunction with the RITU gas-filled separator, excited states have been investigated in the light platinum isotopes. In addition to extending the yrast sequences in Pt-170 and Pt-172, the first observation of excited states in the odd-N isotopes, Pt-169 and Pt-173, is reported. The bands are discussed in terms of trends in level excitation energies as a function of neutron number.

    • The three superdeformed (SD) bands in Ce-132 and the two SD bands in Ce-131 have been extended to higher spin following experiments with the EUROBALL IV spectrometer. The two SD bands in 131Ce have been linked together. However, despite the relatively high population intensity of the bands ( up to 5% of the respective channel), it has not been possible to unambiguously link any of the five SD bands into the low-spin, normally deformed structures of Ce-131,Ce-132.

  • Strongly Deformed Nuclear Shapes at Ultra-High Spin and Shape Coexistence in N\sim 90 Nuclei
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Acta Physica Polonica B. - 0587-4254. ; 40:3, s. 513-522
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The N similar to 90 region of the nuclear chart has featured prominently as the spectroscopy of nuclei at extreme spin has progressed. This talk will present recent discoveries from investigations of high spin behavior in the N similar to 90 Er, Tm and Yb nuclei utilizing the Gammasphere gamma-ray spectrometer. In particular it will include discussion of the beautiful shape evolution and coexistence observed in these nuclei along with the identification of a remarkable new family of band structures. The latter are very weakly populated rotational sequences with high moment of inertia that bypass the classic terminating configurations near spin 40-50 (h) over bar, marking a return to collectivity that extends discrete gamma-ray spectroscopy to well over 60 (h) over bar. Establishing the nature of the yrast states in these nuclei beyond the oblate band-termination states has been a major goal for the past two decades. Cranking calculations suggest that these new structures most likely represent stable triaxial strongly deformed bands that lie in a valley of favored shell energy in deformation and particle-number space.

  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 79:5, s. 051304-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Excited states of the neutron-deficient nucleus Hg-175, populated using fusion-evaporation reactions, are reported for the first time. The spin and parity of the ground state has been determined to be I-pi=7/2(-) through measurements of the alpha decay to the daughter nucleus Pt-171. A structure based on an isomeric state [T-1/2=0.34(3) mu s] with I-pi=13/2(+) and its decay path to the ground state have been established. The observed structures are interpreted in terms of single-particle configurations, and the trends of coexisting shapes in neighboring nuclei are discussed.

  • alpha decay of Re-159 and proton emission from Ta-155
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 75:6, s. 061302-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The alpha decay of Re-159 has been observed for the first time in reactions of 300 MeV Ni-58 ions with an isotopically enriched Cd-106 target. The Re-159 ions were separated in-flight using the RITU separator and implanted into the GREAT spectrometer. The alpha decay emanates from the proton-emitting pi h(11/2) state in Re-159 with an energy of E-alpha=6776 +/- 26 keV and a branching ratio of 7.5 +/- 3.5%. This alpha decay populates a state in the closed neutron shell nucleus Ta-155, which decays by emitting 1444 +/- 15 keV protons with a half-life of 2.9(-1.1)(+1.5) ms. These values are consistent with the emission of the proton from a pi h(11/2) orbital. These results fit in with the systematics of proton and alpha-particle separation energies in the region, but disagree with the previously reported decay properties of Ta-155.

    • Single-particle energies have been investigated in the closed neutron shell proton emitter 155Ta. The 155Ta nuclei were populated through the α decay of 159Re, which has been observed for the first time. The 159Re nuclei were produced in reactions of 300 MeV 58Ni ions with an isotopically enriched 106Cd target, separated in-flight using the RITU separator and implanted into the GREAT spectrometer. The 159Re α decay emanates from the proton-emitting πh11/2 state and populates a state in 155Ta which decays by the emission of a proton from a πh 11/2 orbital. The results fit in with the systematics of proton and α-particle separation energies in the region, but disagree with the previously reported decay properties of 155Ta.

  • Loss of collectivity in the transitional Er-156 nucleus at high spin
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). - 0556-2813. ; 79:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Cd-114(Ca-48, 6n gamma) reaction at 215 MeV has been investigated using the Gammasphere spectrometer to study the high-spin structure of the nucleus Er-156(68)88. Many new transitions have been established along with 68 definitive spin-parity level assignments from a high-fold angular-distribution analysis. In addition, absolute B(M 1) and B(E 1) strengths have been inferred from measured gamma-ray branching ratios. Strong B(E 1) strength (10(-3) W.u.) is discussed in terms of possible octupole collectivity at low spin. At high spin, this nucleus undergoes a Coriolis-induced shape transition from a prolate state of collective rotation to a noncollective, triaxial-oblate configuration. The yrast positive-parity structure ultimately terminates in an energetically favored oblate state at I-pi = 42(+). Several weak high-energy gamma-ray transitions have been discovered that feed this favored state. State-of-the-art cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations are used to interpret the high-spin behavior of Er-156 and comparisons are made with other N = 88 isotones.

  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114. ; 98:1, s. 1-012501
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A new frontier of discrete-line gamma-ray spectroscopy at ultrahigh spin has been opened in the rare-earth nuclei Er-157,Er-158. Four rotational structures, displaying high moments of inertia, have been identified, which extend up to spin similar to 65h and bypass the band-terminating states in these nuclei which occur at similar to 45h. Cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations suggest that these structures arise from well-deformed triaxial configurations that lie in a valley of favored shell energy which also includes the triaxial strongly deformed bands in Lu161-167.

  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 79:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Excited states in the N=90 and N=91 Pt nuclei have been investigated using the JUROGAM and GREAT spectrometers in conjunction with the RITU gas-filled separator. These nuclei were populated via the reactions Mo-92(Kr-78,2n) and Mo-94(Kr-78,3n) at 335 and 348 MeV, respectively. The recoil-decay tagging technique has been used to correlate prompt gamma radiation with the characteristic alpha decays of Pt-168 and Pt-169. A gamma-gamma analysis has allowed a level scheme for Pt-168 to be reported for the first time and the level scheme for Pt-169 to be extended. The excitation energies of the proposed positive-parity yrast states of Pt-168 are compared with calculations based on the interacting boson model and found to be in excellent agreement. These data show a continuation of the trend toward vibrational nuclei as the N=82 shell gap is approached. In addition, new excited states constituting two decay paths have been discovered in Pt-169. .

  • Ingår i: Proton Emitting Nuclei and Related Topics. - : American Institute of Physics (AIP). - 9780735404755 ; , s. 28-33
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The observation of the new nuclide 159Re provides important insights into the evolution of single-particle structure in heavy nuclei beyond the proton drip line. The nuclide 159Re was synthesised in the reaction 106Cd(58Ni, p4n) and identified via its proton radioactivity using the RITU gas-filled separator and the GREAT focal-plane spectrometer. Comparisons of the measured proton energy (Ep = 1805±20 keV) and decay half-life (t1/2 = 21±4 μs) with values calculated using the WKB method indicate that the proton is emitted from an h11/2 state. The implications of these results for future experimental investigations into even more proton unbound Re isotopes using in-flight separation techniques are considered.

    • The observation of the new nuclide Re-159(75)84 provides important insights into the evolution of single-particle structure and the mass surface in heavy nuclei beyond the proton drip line. This nuclide, 26 neutrons away from the nearest stable rhenium isotope, was synthesised in the reaction Cd-106(Ni-58, p4n) and identified via its proton radioactivity using the RITU gas-filled separator and the GREAT focal-plane spectrometer. • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Excited states in Re-161 were populated using the Cd-106(Ni-58, p2n) reaction at a beam energy of 270 MeV, resulting in the first observation of gamma rays emitted from this nucleus. The reaction products were separated from scattered beam and fission fragments by the gas-filled recoil separator RITU, and were implanted in the double-sided silicon strip detectors of the GREAT spectrometer. Prompt gamma rays were detected by the JUROGAM Ge detector array and were assigned to Re-161 based on alpha- and proton-decay tagging of the implanted reaction products. The near-yrast high-spin level structure, which was delineated to spins around 39/2, is discussed in the context of the total Routhian surface formalism. The level scheme is interpreted in terms of the alignment of h(9/2)/f(7/2) neutrons at lower spins, followed by excitations involving the pi h(11/2) subshell at higher spins.

    • The nuclides Pt168-170 were produced by bombarding isotopically enriched Mo-92,Mo-94 targets with 336, 348 MeV Kr-78 ions. Prompt gamma rays were detected at the target position and provided a selection criterion for the Pt168-170 nuclei. This technique enables the problem of the background from higher-energy alpha decays in the spectrum to be circumvented. The Pt nuclei were separated in flight using the gas-filled separator RITU and implanted into the GREAT spectrometer, which was used to study subsequent alpha decays. The alpha-decay branching ratios of Os164-166 were deduced from the fraction of selected Pt168-170 nuclei correlated with a decays Of Os164-166. The resulting branching ratios agree with the literature values but can have improved precision.

    • In recent years, the exploitation of the iecoil-decay tagging (RDT) technique with, large arrays of germanium detectors has revealed much information about the structure of heavy nuclei approaching the proton drip line. The yrast bands of the N <= 93 osmium isotopes have been identified in a campaign of tagging experiments using various spectrometer arrays coupled to the RITU gas-filled separator based at the University of Jyvaskyla. Trends in the yrast state excitation energies have indicated a transition from gamma-soft triaxial to near-spherical shapes with decreasing neutron number. Recent experimental results for Os-162 obtained with the JUROGAM and GREAT spectrometers also indicate the importance of configurations involving the h(9/2) neutron states as the N = Z 82 shell gaps are approached.

    • Excited states of the nucleus Os-167 have been populated by the reaction Mo-92(Kr-78,2pn). The JUROGAM gamma-ray detector array has been used in conjunction with the RITU gas-filled separator and the GREAT spectrometer to observe prompt gamma rays in coincidence with recoiling fusion-evaporation residues and their subsequent decay by alpha particle emission. By correlating prompt gamma radiation with the characteristic alpha radioactivity of Os-167, it has been possible to extend the level scheme for this nucleus significantly. In particular, an extension of the yrast band and four previously unobserved bands are reported. In addition, the recoil distance Doppler-shift method was used to determine a lifetime of tau=20(4) ps for The I-pi=17/2(+) state in Os-167. Hence, the level of collectivity and magnitude of deformation of the low spin yrast band of this nucleus is established. .

    • The technique of recoil beta tagging has been developed which allows prompt gamma decays in nuclei from excited states to be correlated with electrons from their subsequent short-lived beta decay. This technique is ideal for studying nuclei very far from stability and improves in sensitivity for very short-lived decays and for high decay Q-values. The method has allowed excited states in Y-78 to be observed for the first time, as well as an extension in the knowledge of T=1 states in Rb-74. From this new information it has been possible to compare Coulomb energy differences (CED) between T=1 states in Br-70/Se-70, Rb-74/Kr-74, and Y-78/Sr-78. The A=70 CED exhibit an anomalous behavior which is inconsistent with all other known CED. This behavior may be accounted for qualitatively in terms of small variations in the Coulomb energy arising from shape changes.

  • High-spin spectroscopy of natural and unnatural parity states in the mirror-pair V-45/Ti-45
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). - 0556-2813. ; 73:2: 024304
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High-spin states in the proton-rich nucleus V-45 have been identified for the first time. A comprehensive gamma-ray decay scheme has been established following an experiment performed at the Vivitron accelerator at IReS Strasbourg by using the Euroball gamma-ray detector array coupled to the Neutron Wall and Euclides detector arrays. The natural (negative-) parity scheme is identified up to the f(7/2) band termination in addition to a positive-parity collective structure based on a d(3/2) particle-hole excitation. Comparison of this scheme with that of the mirror partner, Ti-45, has yielded detailed information on the variation of Coulomb energy as a function of excitation energy and angular momentum. This is the first time that such an analysis has been performed for a collective structure built on a cross-shell excitation. Comparison of the observed Coulomb energies with those predicted by large-scale shell-model calculations is presented. In this case, unusually, the calculations do not fare as well as for heavier nuclei in the shell. In addition, stark differences between the two nuclei are observed for the decay intensities of the parity-changing E1 decays that de-excite the positive-parity deformed bands.

    • The high-spin structure of Er-157 has been greatly expanded using the Gammasphere spectrometer to investigate the Cd-114(Ca-48,5n) reaction at 215 MeV. Many new transitions have been placed in a greatly augmented level scheme up to spin 40h with many collective rotational sequences established. With increasing angular momentum, this nucleus undergoes a Coriolis-induced shape transition from a deformed state of collective rotation to a noncollective configuration. This transition manifests itself as favored band termination near I=45h in three rotational structures. Many weakly populated states lying at high excitation energy that decay into the terminating states have been discovered. Cranked-Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations suggest that the levels that feed the terminating states arise from weakly collective configurations that break the Z=64 semimagic core.
