  • Everyday Life in the Tropics: Contemporary Archaeology and the Swedish Immigrant Colony in Bayate, Cuba.
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Contemporary Archaeology. - 2051-3429 .- 2051-3437. ; 10:2, s. 291-309
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Swedish emigration to the US during the second half of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century is well documented by historians and statisticians, but this is not the case with Swedish emigration to Cuba, which is largely unknown. This article introduces the project Everyday Life in the Tropics: The “Forgotten” Swedish Immigrant Colony in Bayate, Cuba and the results of its initial fieldwork at the former colony of Bayate and its surroundings in November 2022. The objective of this work was to initiate documentation of the material remains of the Bayate colony, which flourished from 1905 to 1920 and was finally dissolved in the 1930s, through a survey of the remains of buildings and other structures and investigating the extent and nature of these for future research. It is stressed that the areas inside and outside the nucleus of the colony hold huge potential for further archaeological investigations/excavations, and for studying the social and material aspects of the everyday life of the colonists, through the combination of historical, archaeological, anthropological and botanical evidence. It is also possible to focus on the colonists’ construction of identities due to their cross-cultural interactions with Cuban society, and on how these eventually led to social and material continuity or change.

  • Staging Antiquity: A Comparison of Five Greek Cultural Heritage Sites and The Construction of Their Authenticity
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Heritage Management. - : SAGE Publications. - 2455-9296 .- 2456-4796. ; 5:1, s. 7-23
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The text consists of an analysis of how the classical Greek sites of Marathon, Thermopylae, Delphi, Olympia and Mycenae are staged and presented to the public. This analysis is focused upon how the cultural heritage management views the authenticity of these sites and their physical remains, (i.e., as genuine) phenomenon firmly, and solely, belonging to the past, and how these attitudes are materialized in the form of presentations at information boards and in the physical staging of the sites. The materialization of this attitude constitutes the conditions for the public’s physical and imaginative access to the sites and for the public’s possibility to reflect critically around them. Thus, the sites are products of the past, but their authenticity is in parallel also a product of its role in present negotiations of interpretive supremacy, control, power and politics. The article further stresses that a changed attitude towards authenticity is crucial also for a development of a constructive relationship between heritage management and the public. In accordance with this, the article also presents a reconstructed view of authenticity—as the cultural process constituting both humans and material remains.

  • The Johnson Administration’s Cuba Policy. From “Dirty War” to Passive Containment.
  • 2021
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This book presents the reader with a detailed analysis of the U.S. policy toward Cuba that was designed and adopted by the Lyndon B. Johnson administration. Based in governmental and other sources from both the U.S. and Cuba, the book analyzes the changes in the U.S. policy and its political and practical effects. Cuba still had to face a combination of "dirty war" and "passive containment," but during the course of the 1960s, the influence of the "dirty war" policy was weakened due to the failure of the tactics to overthrow the Cuban Revolution by violent means. Instead, the policy was directed towards "passive containment," characterized by its focus on an intensification of the economic blockade, the promotion of diplomatic isolation, and propaganda campaigns and psychological warfare. The book is unique since it is written from a Cuban perspective and it complements and enriches the knowledge of the U.S.-Cuban relationship during the 1960s, and the policy adopted by the Johnson administration.

  • The Last Year of President Kennedy and the “Multiple Path” Policy Toward Cuba
  • 2020
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This book presents new aspects of the U.S. "multiple path" policy toward Cuba that was designed and adopted after the Missile Crisis (October 1962) until the assassination of President Kennedy on November 22, 1963, from a Cuban perspective. The policy was characterized by its contradictory profile, since simultaneously as aggressions were directed at Cuba, it also included the establishment of channels of communication with the Cuban government. The book also analyzes the Cuban–Soviet dispute during the same period. The Cuban experiences have still not been sufficiently discussed, and the aspects offered will enrich the knowledge of the U.S.–Cuban relationship during the mentioned period.

  • The Nixon Administration and Cuba: Continuity and Rupture
  • 2021
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This book presents a detailed analysis of the U.S. policy that was adopted toward Cuba by the Richard M. Nixon administration between January 20, 1969 to August 8, 1974. Based in governmental, as well as other, sources from both the U.S. and Cuba, the book examines the rupture where the policy of "passive containment" was complemented with a policy of "dirty war". President Nixon attempted to re-establish a confrontational and violent path of action, and once again, Cuba was exposed to a "dirty war" consisting of different forms of aggressive terrorist activities. Since the conditions for this violent route had changed dramatically both in the U.S. and in Cuba, a policy characterized by a continuity of the economic and psychological warfare came to be the central one for the Nixon administration. The book is unique since it is written from a Cuban perspective and it therefore complements and enriches the knowledge of the U.S.-Cuban relationship during the end of the 1960s and the beginning of the 1970s, and the policy adopted by the Nixon administration. It is of relevance to everyone interested in the issue, and especially for students and researchers within the disciplines of History and Political Science.

  • The October Crisis Revisited: Some Archaeological and Anthropological Examples
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Cuban Studies. - 1756-3461. ; 15:1, s. 24-38
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This text presents findings from a contemporary archaeology project that has been exploring the October Crisis (1962) and its material and immaterial remains in Cuba since 2005. The project is a cooperation between Swedish archaeologists and Cuban archaeologists, anthropologists and historians, and its primary aim is to complement the dominant narrative of the crisis with material and immaterial remains and memories in a way that approaches and explains the event "from below". The current text focuses on the US Marston mats that can be found at a number of locations in farmsteads and villages surrounding the former missile sites in the Los Palacios and San Cristobal areas, as well as on a photo of a Russian girl that was a gift from a Russian soldier to a Cuban peasant during the crisis. These objects present the reader with new material and human insights concerning the crisis that until now have been more or less concealed and unknown, contributing new complementary dimensions to the understanding of the October Crisis while also challenging the stereotypes constructing the dominant narrative.

  • The Policy of the Ford Administration Toward Cuba. Carrot and Stick
  • 2022
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This book presents new aspects of the U.S. Cuba policy during Gerald R. Ford’s presidency (August 9, 1974 to January 20, 1977). Based in governmental and other sources from the U.S. and Cuba, the book examines how the Ford administration broke with Nixon’s hostile policy when the diplomatic and economic isolation of Cuba was ended in the OAS, even if the U.S. economic blockade prevailed. In line with the detente policy towards the USSR, the Ford administration strived to normalize the relations with Cuba through secret discussions. However, the Cuban involvement in the Angolan civil war ended this process of normalization, and the U.S. returned to a confrontational policy. Within this framework, counterrevolutionary groups in the U.S. could act, more or less with impunity, towards Cuba, but also against Cuban and third country targets both within and outside the U.S. The book describes the oscillating Cuba policy that was the hallmark of the Ford administration. The Cuban perspective adopted will complement and enrich the knowledge of the U.S. policy towards Cuba during Gerald Ford’s presidency. It is of relevance to everyone interested in the issue, and especially for students and researchers within the disciplines of History and Political Science.

  • Una Crisis Mundial Desde Abajo
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Ciências Humanas: Estudos para uma Visão Holística da Sociedade, Vol V. - Curitiba : Editora Artemis. - 9786587396705 ; , s. 18-29
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract

  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Fynd. Tidskrift för Göteborgs Stadsmuseum och Fornminnesföreningen i Göteborg. - 0282-7301. ; :2020, s. 1-10

  • Autonomic function and inflammation in pregnant women participating in a randomized controlled study of mindfulness based childbirth and parenting
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth. - : BioMed Central (BMC). - 1471-2393 .- 1471-2393. ; 23:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Pregnancy and childbirth are significant events in many women's lives, and the prevalence of depressive symptoms increases during this vulnerable period. Apart from well documented cognitive, affective, and somatic symptoms, stress and depression are associated with physiological changes, such as reduced heart-rate variability (HRV) and activation of the inflammatory response system. Mindfulness Based Interventions may potentially have an effect on both HRV, inflammatory biomarkers, and self-assessed mental health. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the effects of a Mindfulness Childbirth and Parenting (MBCP) intervention on HRV, serum inflammatory marker levels, through an RCT study design with an active control group.METHODS: This study is a sub-study of a larger RCT, where significant intervention effects were found on perinatal depression (PND) and perceived stress. Participants were recruited through eight maternity health clinics in Stockholm, Sweden. In this sub-study, we included altogether 80 women with increased risk for PND, and blood samples and HRV measures were available from 60 of the participants (26 in the intervention and 34 in the control group).RESULTS: Participants who received MBCP reported a significantly larger reduction in perceived stress and a significantly larger increase in mindfulness, compared to participants who received the active control treatment. However, in this sub-study, the intervention had no significant effect on PND, inflammatory serum markers or measures of HRV.CONCLUSIONS: No significant differences were found regarding changes in HRV measures and biomarkers of inflammation, larger studies may be needed in the future.
