  • Biomimetic nanoscale reactors and networks
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Annual Review of Physical Chemistry. - : Annual Reviews. - 0066-426X .- 1545-1593. ; 55, s. 613-49
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Methods based on self-assembly, self-organization, and forced shape transformations to form synthetic or semisynthetic enclosed lipid bilayer structures with several properties similar to biological nanocompartments are reviewed. The procedures offer unconventional micro- and nanofabrication routes to yield complex soft-matter devices for a variety of applications for example, in physical chemistry and nanotechnology. In particular, we describe novel micromanipulation methods for producing fluid-state lipid bilayer networks of nanotubes and surface-immobilized vesicles with controlled geometry, topology, membrane composition, and interior contents. Mass transport in nanotubes and materials exchange, for example, between conjugated containers, can be controlled by creating a surface tension gradient that gives rise to a moving boundary or by induced shape transformations. The network devices can operate with extremely small volume elements and low mass, to the limit of single molecules and particles at a length scale where a continuum mechanics approximation may break down. Thus, we also describe some concepts of anomalous fluctuation-dominated kinetics and anomalous diffusive behaviours, including hindered transport, as they might become important in studying chemistry and transport phenomena in these confined systems. The networks are suitable for initiating and controlling chemical reactions in confined biomimetic compartments for rationalizing, for example, enzyme behaviors, as well as for applications in nanofluidics, bioanalytical devices, and to construct computational and complex sensor systems with operations building on chemical kinetics, coupled reactions and controlled mass transport.

  • Micropipet-assisted formation of microscopic networks of unilamellar lipid bilayer nanotubes and containers
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Langmuir. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0743-7463 .- 1520-5827. ; 17:22, s. 6754-6758
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We describe a novel micropipet-assisted technique for the construction of complex, surface-immobilized two-dimensional microscopic networks of unilamellar phospholipid bilayer vesicles (1-50 pm in diameter, 10(-15)-10(-12) L) interconnected by lipid nanotubes (100-300 nm in diameter). As starting material for the construction of networks, we used twinned vesicle pairs, one of which is multilamellar and functions as a membrane donor and the other unilamellar and functions as a membrane acceptor upon manipulation. By electromechanical insertion of a pipet tip into the unilamellar vesicle followed by lateral pulling of the micropipet away from the vesicle, a nanotube was formed. Buffer solution contained in the pipet was then injected into the nanotube orifice, forming a vesicle of controlled size that was immobilized on the surface. The networks have controlled connectivity and are well-defined with regard to the container size, angle between nanotube extensions, and nanotube length. The internal fluid composition of individual vesicles is defined during the formation of a network by selection of the solution contained in the micropipet.

  • A measurement of the t dependence of the helicity structure of diffractive rho meson electroproduction at HERA
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters. Section B: Nuclear, Elementary Particle and High-Energy Physics. - 0370-2693. ; 539:1-2, s. 25-39
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The helicity structure of the diffractive electroproduction of rho mesons, e + p --> e + rho + Y, is studied in a previously unexplored region of large four-momentum transfer squared at the proton vertex, t: 0 < t' < 3 GeV2, where t' = - min. The data used are collected with the HI detector at HERA in the kinematic domain 2.5 < Q(2) < 60 GeV2, 40 < W < 120 GeV No t dependence of the r(00)(04) spin density matrix element is found. A significant t dependent helicity non-conservation from the virtual photon to the rho meson is observed for the spin density matrix element combinations r(00)(5) + 2r(11)(5) and r(00)(1) + 2r(11)(1). These t dependences are consistently described by a perturbative QCD model based on the exchange of two gluons.

  • Diffractive photoproduction of psi(2S) mesons at HERA
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters. Section B: Nuclear, Elementary Particle and High-Energy Physics. - 0370-2693. ; 541:3-4, s. 251-264
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Results on diffractive photoproduction of psi(2S) mesons are presented using data collected between 1996 and 2000 with the H1 detector at the HERA ep collider. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 77 pb(-1). The energy dependence of the diffractive psi(2S) cross section is found to be similar to or possibly somewhat steeper than that for J/psi mesons. The dependences of the elastic and proton dissociative psi(2S) photoproduction cross sections on the squared momentum transfer t at the proton vertex are measured. The t-dependence of the elastic channel, parametrised as e(bt), yields b(el)(psi(2S)) = (4.31 +/- 0.57 +/- 0.46) GeV-2, compatible with that of the J/psi. For the proton dissociative channel the result b(pd)(psi(2S)) = (0.59 +/- 0.13 +/- 0.12) GeV-2 is 2.3 standard deviations smaller than that measured for the J/psi. With proper account of the individual wavefunctions theoretical predictions based on perturbative QCD are found to describe the measurements well. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

  • Energy flow and rapidity gaps between jets in photoproduction at HERA
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044. ; 24:4, s. 517-527
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Dijet events in photon-proton collisions in which there is a large pseudorapidity separation, Deltaeta > 2.5 between the two highest E-T jets are studied with the H1 detector at HERA. The inclusive dijet cross sections are measured as functions of the longitudinal momentum fractions of the proton and photon which participate in the production of the jets, x(p)(jets) and x(gamma)(jets) respectively, Deltaeta, the pseudorapidity P separation between the two highest E-T jets, and E-T(gap), the total summed transverse energy between the jets. Rapidity gap events are defined as events in which E-T(gap) is less than E-T(cut), for E-T(cut) varied between jets 0.5 and 2.0 GeV. The fraction of dijet events with a rapidity gap is measured differentially in Deltaeta, x(p)(jets) and x(gamma)(jets). An excess of events with rapidity gaps at low values of E-T(cut) is observed above the expectation from standard photoproduction processes. This excess can be explained by the exchange of a strongly interacting colour singlet object between the jets.

  • Inelastic leptoproduction of J/psi mesons at HERA
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044. ; 25:1, s. 41-53
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The leptoproduction of J/psi mesons is studied in inelastic reactions for four momentorri transfers 2 < Q(2) < 100GeV(2). The data were taken with the H1 detector at the electron proton collider HERA and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 77 pb(-1). Single differential and double differential cross sections are measured with increased precision compared with previous analyses. New leading order calculations within the non-relativistic QCD factorisation approach including colour octet and colour singlet contributions are compared with the data and are found to give a reasonable description of most distributions. An exception is the shape of the distribution in the J/psi fractional energy. z, which deviates significantly from that of the data. Comparisons with photoproduction are made and the polarisation of the produced J/psi meson is analysed.

  • 2002
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044. ; 25:1, s. 25-39
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An analysis of inelastic photoproduction of J/psi mesons is presented using data collected at the ep collider HERA corresponding to an integrated luminosity of above 80 pb(-1), Differential and double I < P-t/psi(2) < differential cross sections are measured in a wide kinematic region: 60 < W-gammap < 260 GeV, 1 p(t,psi)(2) < 60 GeV2 and 0.05 < z < 0.9. where z is the fraction of the energy of the exchanged photon transferred to the J/psi meson in the rest frame of the target proton. Cross sections at z less than or similar to 0.3 are presented for the first time. Theoretical calculations within the Colour Singlet Model at NLO for direct photon processes are shown to give a good description of the data in the medium z region (0.3 < z < 0.9) up to the highest p(t,psi)(2) values. A calculation using a k(t) factorisation approach in LO in the Colour Singlet Model is also able to describe these data. The data in the full z range are also compared to LO calculations within a non-relativistic QCD framework including colour octet and colour singlet contributions for direct and resolved photons. It seems possible to reconcile data and theory with modest contributions from colour octet processes. The polarisation of the J/psi meson is measured as a function of z and p(t,psi) and is reasonably described by the theoretical predictions.

  • Measurement and QCD analysis of neutral and charged current cross sections at HERA
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044. ; 30:1, s. 1-32
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The inclusive e(+)p single and double differential cross sections for neutral and charged current processes axe measured with the H1 detector at HERA. The data were taken in 1999 and 2000 at a centre-of-mass energy of roots = 319 GeV and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 65.2 pb(-1). The cross sections are measured in the range of four-momentum transfer squared Q(2) between 100 and 30 000 GeV2 and Bjorken x between 0.0013 and 0.65. The neutral current analysis for the new e(+)p data and the earlier e-p data taken in 1998 and 1999 is extended to small energies of the scattered electron and therefore to higher values of inelasticity y, allowing a determination of the longitudinal structure function F-L at high Q(2) (110 - 700 GeV2). A new measurement of the structure function x (F) over tilde (3) is obtained using the new e(+)p and previously published e p neutral current cross section data at high Q(2). These data together with H1 low Q(2) precision data are further used to perform new next-to-leading order QCD analyses in the framework of the Standard Model to extract flavour separated parton distributions in the proton.

  • Measurement of D*(+/-) meson production and F-2(c) in deep-inelastic scattering at HERA
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters. Section B: Nuclear, Elementary Particle and High-Energy Physics. - 0370-2693. ; 528:3-4, s. 199-214
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The inclusive production of D*+/-(2010) mesons in deep-inelastic scattering is studied with the HI detector at HERA. In the kinematic region 1 < Q(2) < 100 GeV2 and 0.05 < y < 0.7 an e(+) p cross section for inclusive D*+/- meson production of 8.50 +/- 0.42(stat.)(-100)(+1.21)(syst.) nb is measured in the visible range p(tD*) > 1.5 GeV and eta(D*) < 1.5. Single and double differential inclusive D*+/- meson cross sections are compared to perturbative QCD calculations in two different evolution schemes, The charm contribution to the proton structure, F-c(2)(x, Q(2)), is determined by extrapolating the visible charm cross section to the full phase space. This contribution is found to rise from about 10% at Q(2) = 1.5 GeV2 to more than 25% at Q(2) = 60 GeV2 corresponding to x values ranging from 5 x 10(-5) to 3 x 10(-3). (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Dijet cross sections as functions of several jet observables are measured in photoproduction using the HI detector at HERA. The data sample comprises e(+)p data with an integrated luminosity of 319 pb(-1). Jets are selected using the inclusive k(perpendicular to) algorithm with a minimum transverse energy of 25 GeV for the leading jet. The phase space covers longitudinal proton momentum fraction x(p) and photon longitudinal momentum fraction x(gamma) in the ranges 0.05 < x(p) < 0.6 and 0.1 < x(gamma) < 1. The predict ions of next-to-leading order perturbative QCD, including recent photon and proton parton densities, are found to be compatible with the data in a wide kinematical range.

  • 2002
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044. ; 24:1, s. 33-41
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Deep-inelastic scattering data in the range 150 < Q(2) < 35000 GeV2 are used to investigate the minimum jet separation necessary to allow accurate description of the rate of dijet production using next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations. The required jet separation is found to be small, allowing about 1/3 of DIS data to be classified as dijet, as opposed to approximately 1/10 with more typical jet analyses. A number of precision measurements made using this dijet sample are well described by the calculations. The data are also described by the combination of leading order matrix elements and parton showers, as implemented in the QCD based Monte Carlo model RAPGAP.

  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters. Section B: Nuclear, Elementary Particle and High-Energy Physics. - 0370-2693. ; 542:3-4, s. 193-206
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A measurement of inclusive jet cross-sections in deep-inelastic ep scattering at HERA is presented based on data with an integrated luminosity of 21.1 pb(-1). The measurement is performed for photon virtualities Q(2) between 5 and 100 GeV2, differentially in Q(2), in the jet transverse energy E-T, in E-T(2)/Q(2) and in the pseudorapidity eta(lab). With the renormalization scale mu(R) = E-T, perturbative QCD calculations in next-to-leading order (NLO) give a good description of the data in most of the phase space. Significant discrepancies are observed only for jets in the proton beam direction with ET below 20 GeV and Q2 below 20 GeV2. This corresponds to the region in which NLO corrections are largest and further improvement of the calculations is thus of particular interest.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Inclusive jet cross sections are measured in photoproduction at HERA using the H1 detector. The data sample of e(+)p --> e(+) + jet + X events in the kinematic range of photon virtualities Q(2) less than or equal to 1GeV(2) and photon-proton centre-of-mass energies 95 less than or equal to W-gammap less than or equal to 285GeV represents an integrated luminosity of 24.1pb(-1). Jets are defined using the inclusive k(perpendicular to) algorithm. Single- and multi-differential cross sections are measured as functions of jet transverse energy E-T(jet) and pseudorapidity eta(jet) in the domain 5 less than or equal to E-T(jet) less than or equal to 75GeV and -1 less than or equal to eta(jet) less than or equal to 2.5. The cross sections are found to be in good agreement with next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations corrected for fragmentation and underlying event effects. The cross section differential in E-T(jet), which varies by six orders of magnitude over the measured range, is compared with similar distributions from p (p) over bar colliders at equal and higher energies.

    • Deep-inelastic e(+/-) p scattering at high squared momentum transfer Q(2) up to 30 000 GeV2 is used to search for eq contact interactions associated to scales far beyond the HERA centre of mass energy. The neutral current cross section measurements dsigma / dQ(2), corresponding to integrated luminosities of 16.4 pb(-1) of e(-) p data and 100.8 pb(-1) of e(+) p data, are well described by the Standard Model and are analysed to set constraints on new phenomena. For conventional contact interactions lower limits are set on compositeness scales A ranging between 1.6-5.5 TeV. Couplings and masses of leptoquarks and squarks in R-parity violating supersymmetry are constrained to M / lambda > 0.3-1.4 TeV. A search for low scale quantum gravity effects in models with large extra dimensions provides limits on the effective Planck scale of MS > 0.8 TeV. A form factor analysis yields a bound on the radius of light quarks of R-q < 1.0 10(-18) m. (C) 2003 Published by Elsevier B.V.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A search for contributions to the reaction ep --> epi(0)N* from photon-odderon fusion in the photoproduction regime at HERA is reported, at an average photon-proton centre-of-mass energy = 215 GeV. The measurement proceeds via detection of the pi(0) decay photons, a leading neutron from the N* decay, and the scattered electron. No pi(0) signal is observed and an upper limit on the cross section for the photon-odderon fusion process of sigma(gammap --> pi(0)N*) < 49 nb at the 95% confidence level is derived, integrated over the experimentally accessible range of the squared four-momentum transfer at the nucleon vertex 0.02 < < 0.3 GeV2. This excludes a recent prediction from a calculation based on a non-perturbative QCD model of a photon-odderon fusion cross section above 200 nb. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

  • 2002
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044. ; 25:4, s. 495-509
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Signals of QCD instanton-induced processes are searched for in deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) at the electron-proton collider HERA in a kinematic region defined by the Bjorken-scaling variables x > 10(-3), 0.1 < y < 0.6 and photon virtualities 10 less than or similar to Q(2) < 100 GeV2. Several observables characterising hadronic final state properties of QCD instanton-induced events are exploited to identify a potentially instanton-enriched domain. While an excess of events with instanton-like topology is observed it cannot be claimed significant given the uncertainty of the standard DIS background simulation. Upper limits on the cross-section for instanton-induced processes of between 60 pb and 1000 pb are set dependent on the kinematic domain considered. The data do not exclude the cross-section predicted by instanton perturbation theory for small instanton sizes. At large instanton sizes a naive extrapolation of instanton perturbation theory yields a cross-section in the range of sensitivity of this study. Such a cross-section is not observed, in agreement with non-perturbative lattice simulations of the QCD vacuum.

  • 2000
  • Ingår i: IEEE 2000 Position Location and Navigation Symposium. - Piscataway, NJ : IEEE Communications Society. - 0780358724 ; , s. 309-316
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper details an investigation into the receiver measured time (RMT) concept of VDL Mode 4, basically the ability to derive estimates of time from the transmission of the VDL Mode 4 signals themselves. The RMT concept is based on determining the accurate time of transmission by measuring the time of arrival (TOA) of a received signal. The reverse aspect, or that of user position, can also be computed in the same manner and all computed simulations hold for errors in position. If synchronized time is available, or can be derived, then the user position can be computed based on signals from known transmitter locations. A complete, end-to-end RMT simulation model for the Gaussian filtered frequency shift keying (GFSK) and differential 8-phase shift keying (D8PSK) modulation techniques has been developed in which various transmitters, channels and receiver models as well as an RMT measurement system have been included. The timing results, which are included, are described in terms of two-sigma errors as a function of signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs). The performance varies for the different receiver structures over the typical operation region and for a 1-bit differential GFSK detector the two-sigma error is as low as 0.40 microseconds, corresponding to a ranging error of approximately 120 meters. When incorporating co-channel interference (CCI), multipath and Doppler frequency shifts the RMT performance has been shown to decrease in terms of higher two-sigma errors

  • Ingår i: Physics Letters. Section B: Nuclear, Elementary Particle and High-Energy Physics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693. ; 568:3-4, s. 205-218
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The diffractive photoproduction of J/psi mesons is measured with the HI detector at the ep collider HERA using an integrated luminosity of 78 pb(-1). The differential cross section dsigma(gammap --> J/psiY)/dt is studied in the range 2 < < 30 GeV2, where t is the square of the four-momentum transferred at the proton vertex. The cross section is also presented as a function of the photon-proton centre-of-mass energy W-gammap in three t intervals, spanning the range 50 < W-gammap < 200 GeV. A fast rise of the cross section with W-gammap is observed for each t range and the slope for the effective linear Pomeron trajectory is measured to be alpha' = -0.0135 +/- 0.0074(stat.) +/- 0.0051(syst.) GeV-2. The measurements are compared with perturbative QCD models based on BFKL and DGLAP evolution. The data are found to be compatible with s-channel helicity conservation. • 2003
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters. Section B: Nuclear, Elementary Particle and High-Energy Physics. - 0370-2693. ; 561:3-4, s. 241-257
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A search for events with a high-energy isolated electron or muon and missing transverse momentum has been performed at the electron-proton collider HERA using an integrated luminosity of 13.6 pb(-1) in e(-) p scattering and 104.7 pb(-1) in e(+) p scattering. Within the Standard Model such events are expected to be mainly due to W boson production with subsequent leptonic decay. In e(-) p interactions one event is observed in the electron channel and none in the muon channel, consistent with the expectation of the Standard Model. In the e(+) p data a total of 18 events are seen in the electron and muon channels compared to an expectation of 12.4 +/- 1.7 dominated by W production (9.4 +/- 1.6). Whilst the overall observed number of events is broadly in agreement with the number predicted by the Standard Model, there is-an excess of events with transverse momentum of the hadronic system greater than 25 GeV with 10 events found compared to 2.9 +/- 0.5 expected. The results are used to determine the cross-section for events with an isolated electron or muon and missing transverse momentum. (C) 2003 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

    • Several homeobox transcription factors, such as HOXB3 and HOXB4, have been implicated in regulation of hematopoiesis. In support of this, studies show that overexpression of HOXB4 strongly enhances hematopoietic stem cell regeneration. Here we find that mice deficient in both Hoxb3 and Hoxb4 have defects in endogenous hematopoiesis with reduced cellularity in hematopoietic organs and diminished number of hematopoietic progenitors without perturbing lineage commitment. Analysis of embryonic day 14.5 fetal livers revealed a significant reduction in the hematopoietic stem cell pool, suggesting that the reduction in cellularity observed postnatally is due to insufficient expansion during fetal development. Primitive Lin(-) Scal(+) c-kit(+) hematopoietic progenitors lacking Hoxb3 and Hoxb4 displayed impaired proliferative capacity in vitro. Similarly, in vivo repopulating studies of Hoxb3/Hoxb4-deficient hematopoietic cells resulted in lower repopulating capability compared to normal littermates. Since no defects in homing were observed, these results suggest a slower regeneration of mutant HSC. Furthermore, treatment with cytostatic drugs demonstrated slower cell cycle kinetics of hematopoietic stem cells deficient in Hoxb3 and Hoxb4, resulting in increased tolerance to antimitotic drugs. Collectively, these data suggest a direct physiological role of Hoxb4 and Hoxb3 in regulating stem cell regeneration and that these genes are required for maximal proliferative response.

  • Ingår i: Blood. - : American Society of Hematology. - 1528-0020 .- 0006-4971. ; 103:11, s. 4126-4133

    • Enforced expression of Hoxb4 dramatically increases the regeneration of murine hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) after transplantation and enhances the repopulation ability of human severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) repopulating cells. Therefore, we asked what physiologic role Hoxb4 has in hematopoiesis. A novel mouse model lacking the entire Hoxb4 gene exhibits significantly reduced cellularity in spleen and bone marrow (BM) and a subtle reduction in red blood cell counts and hemoglobin values. A mild reduction was observed in the numbers of primitive progenitors and stem cells in adult BM and fetal liver, whereas lineage distribution was normal. Although the cell cycle kinetics of primitive progenitors was normal during endogenous hematopoiesis, defects in proliferative responses of BM Lin(-) Sca1(+) c-kit(+) stem and progenitor cells were observed in culture and in vivo after the transplantation of BM and fetal liver HSCs. Quantitative analysis of mRNA from fetal liver revealed that a deficiency of Hoxb4 alone changed the expression levels of several other Hox genes and of genes involved in cell cycle regulation. In summary, the deficiency of Hoxb4 leads to hypocellularity in hematopoietic organs and impaired proliferative capacity. However, Hoxb4 is not required for the generation of HSCs or the maintenance of steady state hematopoiesis.

    • During 24 h, water samples were taken for determination of a number of key parameters in a water system containing high concentrations of FeII at circumneutral pH. None of the major constituents (Ca, Mg, Na, K and sulfate) showed diurnal variations, while dissolved oxygen and pH increased during the night. This increase could entirely be explained by the decrease in water temperature. However, the concentration of FeII slightly increased at constant concentration of total Fe during the night, opposite to earlier observations in other systems where the presence of FeII was shown to be controlled by photoreduction. Nocturnal peaks of FeII have also been observed in other systems with high iron concentrations, however, at acidic pH, but without obvious explanation. The mechanisms for this process therefore need further investigation.

  • Effects of a fulvic acid on the adsorption of mercury and cadmium on goethite
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Science of the Total Environment. - Amsterdam, Netherlands : Elsevier. - 0048-9697 .- 1879-1026. ; 304:1-3, s. 257-268
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The effects of an aquatic fulvic acid on the pH-dependent adsorption of Hg(II) and Cd(II) to particulate goethite (a-FeOOH) were studied in batch systems. The ionic medium consisted of 0.01 M HClO and the total concentrations 4 of mercury and cadmium were maintained at 10y8 M with 203Hg and 109Cd as tracers. pH In the systems was varied in the range 3–10 by addition of HClO and NaOH.All commercial chemicals were of analytical grade or better. An 4 aquatic fulvic acid (20 ppm), previously isolated and characterised in detail, was used as a model for humic substances and its adsorption to goethite is included in this study. The adsorption of the fulvic acid (20 ppm) onto goethite decreased slowly from 90% at pH 3–7.5 to 10% at pH 10. In systems without fulvic acid the adsorption of mercury increased in a linear fashion from 10% at pH 3 to 70% at pH 10.In the presence of fulvic acid (20 ppm), the adsorption was almost quantitative in the intermediate pH range (pH 5–7), and exceeded 92% over the entire pH range. Thus, association between mercury and the fulvic acid enhanced adsorption in general although the largest impact was found at low pH.Adsorption of cadmium increased from nearly 0 to almost 100% at approximately pH 6. In the presence of fulvic acid, the adsorption increased below pH 7 and decreased above pH 7. The adsorption isotherm for mercury when the concentration was increased from 10y8 to 1.8=10y4 M showed a corresponding increase of K (lyg) up to a total concentration at 10y6 M.At higher mercury concentrations K was lowered. In the presence of fulvic acid the corresponding relationship of K was bi-modal, i.e. high values at low and intermediate concentrations of mercury. This behaviour suggests that in the absence of fulvic acid the adsorption follow the expected behaviour, i.e. adsorption sites with similar affinity for mercury. In the presence of fulvic acid, additional adsorption sites are available by the organic molecule (possibly sulfur groups) when it is associated to the goethite. The adsorption isotherm for cadmium indicates a lowering of K at 10y4 M. Cadmium had no competitive effect on mercury and vice versa. Zinc, however, affected the adsorption of cadmium but not the adsorption of mercury.

  • Metal leachability and anthropogenic signal in roadside soils estimated from sequential extraction and stable lead isotopes
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Environmental Monitoring & Assessment. - 0167-6369 .- 1573-2959. ; 90:1-3, s. 135-160
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Several roadside soil samples were collected at two field sites in Sweden. They were analysed for total elemental content (using both ICP-MS and XRF) and stable lead isotopes. Extraction with deicing salt solution and sequential extraction were performed in order to elucidate the potential mobility due to the use of deicing agents. The total concentrations of elements, especially lead, have decreased and lead is presently almost at background concentrations (15–51 ppm for surface samples). However, the isotopic signature indicates that old gasoline lead still is left at the site constructed prior to 1975. The field site constructed in 1992 showed, however, no 206Pb/207Pb ratio below 1.14. Only minor amounts were leached using deicing salt solutions; for lead only 0.29%, on average, was extracted indicating that the mobile fraction already was released. Sequential extraction indicated that lead mainly was associated with reducible (34.4%) and oxidisable (35.4%) fractions. Exchangable and acid soluble fractions contained 20.3% while 10.0% was found in the residual fraction. The salt extraction released, however, very low concentrations indicating that most in fraction 1 is acid soluble (e.g. carbonates). Tungsten was also found at high concentrations indicating a possible impact from studded tires. For tungsten the following composition was obtained: residual (48.0%) > oxidisable (47.6%) > reducible (3.3%) > exchangeable/acid soluble (1.1%). From the isotopic studies it was also suggested that the order for incorporating anthropogenic lead into soils is exchangeable/carbonates > (hydr)oxides > organic matter > residual. The multivariate technique principal component analysis (PCA) seems promising for evaluating large sequential extraction datasets.

  • Mobilisation of heavy metals by deicing salts in a roadside environment
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Water Research. - : Elsevier BV. - 0043-1354 .- 1879-2448. ; 38:3, s. 720-732
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The seasonal variations of some selected heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn) and principal anions in soil solutions were monitored as a function of distance from the road at two field sites in Sweden. During the winter, the conductivity, concentrations of dissolved sodium and chloride increased dramatically due to the application of deicing agents (i.e. NaCl). Due to ion exchange, the pH decreased one unit in the soil solutions, whereas the concentrations of total organic carbon decreased due to coagulation and/or sorption to stationary solids. The heavy metal concentrations increased during the winter, but through different mechanisms. Cadmium concentrations in the aqueous phase increased as a response to ion exchange, possibly also enhanced by the formation of chloride complexes. Similarly, the concentrations of zinc increased, due to ion exchange, with calcium and protons. The mechanisms of mobilisation for copper and lead were not that clear probably due to association with coagulated or sorbed organic matter in combination with colloid dispersion.

  • Ingår i: Water, Air and Soil Pollution. - 0049-6979 .- 1573-2932. ; 147:1-4, s. 343-366
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The concentrations of Cd, Co, Cu, Pb, W and Zn were measured in road runoff and total deposition at two Swedish field sites during one year. It was found that the concentrations of most elements increased significantly during the winter, up to one order of magnitude. For cobalt and tungsten, it was found that around 90% of the total mass transport occurred during the winter, whereas for Cu, Pb, Cd, Zn and Na, the corresponding figures were 70–90, 40–80, 60–90, 50–70 and >99% depending on site specific conditions. The deicing salts (rock salts) did not significantly contribute to the increase in trace element concentrations. Instead, the increased concentrations were due to more intense wearing of the pavement during the winter because of the use of studded tires in combination with the chemical effects caused by the use of deicing salts. New potential elemental markers for roads and traffic are suggested.

  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Chemosphere. - : Pergamon Press. - 0045-6535 .- 1879-1298. ; 40:1, s. 71-77
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The use of UV/Vis spectroscopy in combination with partial least squares (PLS) regression for the simultaneous prediction of nitrate and non-purgeable organic carbon (NPOC) in groundwaters was evaluated. A model of high quality was obtained using first order derivative spectra in the range 200–300 nm. Inclusion of non-UV-absorbing constituents in the modeling procedure, i.e., chloride, sulfate, fluoride, total carbon (TC), inorganic carbon (IC), alkalinity, pH and conductivity was also evaluated. This model seemed to be useful for prediction of chloride, TC, IC, alkalinity and conductivity, while its ability to predict sulfate, fluoride and pH was poor. In conclusion, application of PLS regression, which requires neither filtration of samples nor addition of chemicals, is a promising alternative for fast interpretation of geochemical patterns of groundwater quality.

  • Transient disruption of autocrine TGF-beta signaling leads to enhanced survival and proliferation potential in single primitive human hemopoietic progenitor cells.
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Journal of Immunology. - 1550-6606. ; 168:2, s. 755-762
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Hemopoietic stem cells (HSCs) are maintained at relative quiescence by the balance between the positive and negative regulatory factors that stimulate or inhibit their proliferation. Blocking the action of negative regulatory factors may provide a new approach for inducing HSCs into proliferation. A variety of studies have suggested that TGF-beta negatively regulates cell cycle progression of HSCs. In this study, a dominant negatively acting mutant of TGF-beta type II receptor (TbetaRIIDN) was transiently expressed in HSCs by using adenoviral vector-mediated gene delivery, such that the effects of disrupting the autocrine TGF-beta signaling in HSCs can be directly examined at a single cell level. Adenoviral vectors allowing the expression of TbetaRIIDN and green fluorescence protein in the same CD34(+)CD38(-)Lin(-) cells were constructed. Overexpression of TbetaRIIDN specifically disrupted TGF-beta-mediated signaling. Autocrine TGF-beta signaling in CD34(+)CD38(-)Lin(-) cells was studied in single cell assays under serum-free conditions. Transient blockage of autocrine TGF-beta signaling in CD34(+)CD38(-)Lin(-) cells enhanced their survival. Furthermore, the overall proliferation potential and proliferation kinetics in these cells were significantly enhanced compared with the CD34(+)CD38(-)Lin(-) cells expressing green fluorescence protein alone. Therefore, we have successfully blocked the autocrine TGF-beta-negative regulatory loop of primitive hemopoietic progenitor cells.

  • Ingår i: Langmuir. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1520-5827 .- 0743-7463. ; 20:13, s. 5637-5641
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A method to create three-dimensional compact liposome networks, adhered to topographic substrates fabricated in the epoxy polymer SU-8 was described. The polymeric photoresist SU-8 is a highly suitable material for soybean lipid vesicle immobilization displaying sufficient contact potential for secure anchoring of liposomes and minimal lipid spreading. The material allows fluid-state lipid membrane structures to retain their structural integrity for long time periods. The use of the construction techniques increases the compactness of lipid nanotube networks as the tube density from a single vesicle is increased when access to the off-equatorial area is provided.

  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Elsevier Science. - : Elsevier BV. - 1626-3200. ; 455-456, s. 726-730
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Porous silicon layers with a one-dimensional lateral gradient in pore size are prepared by electrochemical etching and characterized by spectroscopic ellipsometry in the visible to near-infrared region. The ellipsometer is equipped with a micro-spot option giving a lateral resolution of approximately 100 μm. By matching multiple-layer-model calculations to the laterally-resolved variable angle of incidence spectroscopic ellipsometry data, the thickness variation along the gradient as well as the in-depth porosity profile is mapped. Upon exposure to a protein solution, protein adsorption occurs on top of the porous silicon layer. At the high-porosity region of the gradient also penetration of protein molecules into the porous layer takes place. Ellipsometry data are recorded after protein exposure and variations of protein adsorption along the porous silicon gradient is modeled as well as the in-depth profile of protein penetration.

  • Use and perception of Design for Environment (DfE) in Small and Medium Sized Enterprises in Sweden
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: 2003 3RD INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON ENVIRONMENTALLY CONSCIOUS DESIGN AND INVERSE MANUFACTURING - ECODESIGN '03. ; , s. 723-730
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper aims to give an image of the utilization and perception of DfE and methods and tools within some Swedish Small and Medium Sized Enterprises. The background is the large number of existing methods and tools in relation to the low utilization in the industry. The research method has been qualitative research interviews in ten companies. Some of the material is based on a Master Thesis written by Skoglund and Svensson (2002). The education level about DfE is very low and the overall motivation for DfE in the companies seems to be low or nonexistent. The DfE method and tool utilization is zero. One reason for this lack of interest seems to be the low interest in environmental questions and DfE among customers. The number of environmental and DfE requirements are low. The authors noted that environmental improvements have been made but not considered as environmental work, e.g. weight and fuel minimization but they are driven by for example quality or economical reasons. There are two ways to get environmental improvements by using methods and tools, by specific DfE methods and tools and by integration of environmental considerations in the ordinary design methods and tools.

  • Throughput of the WCDMA Random Access Channel
  • 2000
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The uplink random access channel will be a key part of the 3rd generation wireless systems as it will be used for initial contact with base stations as well as for packet data transmission. In this paper, the throughput of preamble power ramping with 16 orthogonal channels currently adopted as the UTRA standard for random access is evaluated. It is shown that the tight power restrictions necessary in a CDMA system leads to degraded throughput at high loads. A modification to the scheme that significantly increases throughput for high loads is suggested.

  • Linking analytical target cascading to engineering information systems for simulation-based optimal vehicle design
  • 2003
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An environment for simulation-based analysis, design, and product development is presented in this article. Specifically, we integrate the analytical target cascading (ATC) methodology for optimal design with the Active Mediator Object System (AMOS) II information management tool to represent and exchange engineering data in distributed and heterogeneous environments. The ATC process is applied to the design optimization problem of a vehicle model with many design variables. The vehicle model is decomposed into system models, and vehicle design targets are translated to system specifications. The ADAMS software is used to develop the necessary simulation models. AMOS II is used to enable the data exchange among the vehicle dynamics simulation software that is distributed on different computers connected by a network.
