  • Rolling resistance : basic information and state-of-the-art on measurement methods. Final version
  • 2011
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • MIRIAM has established a sub-project (SP), designated SP 1, to deal with measurement methods for rolling resistance and related issues. This subject forms the most fundamental basis for the MIRIAM ambition to consider rolling resistance in pavement management or other types of infrastructure systems. Without robust measurement methods and equipment that can use them there will be no reliable data as input to such systems and the end result will be most uncertain, if useful at all.In order to develop and study measurement methods, there must be a basic understanding of the influencing parameters as well as what energy losses that should be included in the concept of rolling resistance. These issues are, therefore, important parts of the work in SP 1.This report is intended to provide basic knowledge about the part of the tyre and road interaction which relates to rolling resistance; for example, the mechanisms that create rolling resistance, and the influence on rolling resistance of various tyre and road parameters. The intention is also to suggest a definition of rolling resistance for the purposes of this project, as well as to provide some detailed state-of-the-art knowledge about the measurement methods and equipment that are useful for collecting rolling resistance data.

  • High serum adiponectin predicts incident fractures in elderly men: Osteoporotic fractures in men (MrOS) Sweden
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of Bone and Mineral Research. - : Wiley. - 1523-4681 .- 0884-0431. ; 27:6, s. 1390-1396
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Adipocytes and osteoblasts share a common progenitor, and there is, therefore, potential for both autocrine and endocrine effects of adiponectin on skeletal metabolism. The aim of the present study was to determine whether high serum adiponectin was associated with an increased risk of fracture in elderly men. We studied the relationship between serum adiponectin and the risk of fracture in 999 elderly men drawn from the general population and recruited to the Osteoporotic Fractures in Men (MrOS) study in Gothenburg, Sweden. Baseline data included general health questionnaires, lifestyle questionnaires, body mass index (BMI), bone mineral density (BMD), serum adiponectin, osteocalcin, and leptin. Men were followed for up to 7.4 years (average, 5.2 years). Poisson regression was used to investigate the relationship between serum adiponectin, other risk variables and the time-to-event hazard function of fracture. Median levels of serum adiponectin at baseline were 10.4 mu g/mL (interquartile range, 7.714.3). During follow-up, 150 men sustained one or more fractures. The risk of fracture increased in parallel with increasing serum adiponectin (hazard ratio [HR]/SD, 1.46; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.231.72) and persisted after multivariate-adjusted analysis (HR/SD, 1.30; 95% CI, 1.091.55). Serum adiponectin shows graded stepwise association with a significant excess risk of fracture in elderly men that was independent of several other risk factors for fracture. Its measurement holds promise as a risk factor for fracture in men. (C) 2012 American Society for Bone and Mineral Research.

  • Mutational tuning of galectin-3 specificity and biological function.
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: The Journal of biological chemistry. - 1083-351X. ; 285, s. 35079-35091
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Galectins are defined by a conserved beta-galactoside binding site, which has been linked to many of their important functions in e.g. cell adhesion, signaling and intracellular trafficking. Weak adjacent sites may enhance or decrease affinity for natural beta-galactoside containing glycoconjugates, but little is known about the biological role of this modulation of affinity (fine specificity). We have now produced 10 mutants of human galectin-3, with changes in these adjacent sites, which have altered carbohydrate-binding fine specificity but which retain the basic beta-galactoside binding activity as show by glycan-array binding and a solution-based fluorescence anisotropy assay. Each mutant was also tested in two biological assays to provide a correlation between fine specificity and function. Galectin-3 R186S, which has selectively lost affinity for LacNAc, a disaccharide moiety commonly found on glycoprotein glycans, has lost the ability to activate neutrophil leukocytes and intracellular targeting into vesicles. K176L has increased affinity for beta-galactosides substituted with GlcNAcbeta1-3 as found in poly-N-acetyllactosaminoglycans, and increased potency to activate neutrophil leukocytes, even though it has lost other aspects of galectin-3 fine specificity. G182A has altered carbohydrate-binding fine specificity and altered intracellular targeting into vesicles, a possible link to the intracellular galectin-3-mediated anti-apoptotic effect known to be lost by this mutant. Finally, the mutants have helped to define the differences in fine specificity shown by Xenopus, mouse and human galectin-3 and as such, evidence for adaptive change during evolution.

  • Ingår i: Evidence & Policy. - Policy Press : Policy Press. - 1744-2648 .- 1744-2656. ; 10:4, s. 541-554
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The articel describes and analyses some preliminary working methods for user involvement in child welfare. The models are based on the results of a national project in Sweden where children and young peple have been involved as informants. How experiences and viewpoints from children and young people can be a source of knowledge in child welfare organisatiions is one of the main questions. The performance and the results of the project are analysed in relaton to a theoretical macro-oriented model created to illustrate the need for different kinds of knowledge in supporting the implementation of an evidence-based practice.

  • Fiskbestånd och miljö i hav och sötvatten : Resurs- och miljööversikt 2012
  • 2012

  • SYN-TES INTERDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH ON COLOUR AND LIGHT
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Proceedings for Interim Meeting of the International Colour Association (AIC); AIC 2012 “In Color We Live: Color and Environment”, 22 – 25 September 2012, Taipei, Taiwan. - : The International Colour Association. ; , s. 80-83, s. 80-83
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Colour and light have largely been considered as belonging to two different fields of knowledge, having disparate theoretical, terminological and methodological traditions. This creates a ground for misunderstandings and obstructs a fruitful interdisciplinary and interprofessional collaboration. A survey over international research literature from 2006 -2011 shows that there has been only little research on the spatial interaction between colour and light, but that the interest for this area has recently increased. The interdisciplinary Nordic research project SYN-TES: Human colour and light synthesis. Towards a coherent field of knowledge was carried out during 2010-11. Colour and light experts from Nordic universities and companies investigated different aspects of the spatial interaction between colour and light and its importance for human beings. This paper deals with the general learnings from the process. Specific results are presented in other papers at this conference.

  • The Influence of the Measuring/Viewing Angle on the Color of Injection-Molded Plastics
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Polymeric Materials and Polymeric Biomaterials. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0091-4037 .- 1563-535X. ; 59:4, s. 292-306
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A multi-angle spectrophotometer was used to measure the CIELab coordinates L∗, a∗ and b∗ in different angles relative to the incident light. The specimens used were acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene injection-molded plaques in different colors and with different surface textures. Variations in the coordinates when changing the measuring angle depended on the color and the texture. In general, however, smooth (glossy) surfaces were measured to be darker and of higher chroma than textured surfaces and as the gloss of the surfaces decreased (due to texturing), the lightness of the surfaces increased and the absolute values of a∗ and b∗ decreased over the range of measuring angles (not too close to the specular reflection angle). A psychometric study involving a human test panel was used as a complement to the measurement. The agreement between the measurements and this study cannot be said to be satisfactory, unless the variation in the color coordinates was quite clear. Possible reasons are discussed.

  • On evaluation of base-groups in headmasters academic leadership program
  • 2014
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • BackgroundThe effects of leadership training are disputed in research. Evaluations of participants’ training experiences are commonplace. Studies are seldom made which investigate and problematize the impressions that can be left in their complex practice by training, and which can have an effect on their practical duties and on the leaders’ capacity to deal with leadership in their everyday complexity. Empirical materialThe 3-year Headmaster Training Course in Sweden which offers 30 Swedish university credits, equivalent to 30 ECTS, comprises approximately 500 headmasters and pre-school leaders. The leaders of the base groups are university staff. During the course the groups meet 6 times, each time containing a different theme. Curiosity dictated that we should ascertain what work and discussions took place within the base groups, how this is experienced, and how it contributes to the participants’ professional development. MethodIn order to study what happens in the base-group meetings, two of the university base-group staff kept a diary noting down the contents and discussions from each specific session. Recorded interviews were made with 21 participants from 4 base groups. Part of the result of this part of the study has been tested on other base-group leaders from the university (7 people). In order to handle the empirical material we turn to narrative organizational research. The method involves a systematic interpretation of other people’s sense-making of the worlds they experience, here basic group meetings. The interpretation is based on how people create meaning in the experiences of what happens in the groups using perspectives from their everyday complexity as leaders.ResultPreliminary results show an ongoing frustration related to their perception of having too limited resources to allow them to do a good job as headmasters. Within the base groups they are given the opportunity, together with others in similar situations, to exchange experiences and feelings regarding the complex, tangible, everyday work duties they carry out. The frustration felt by the leaders about the complexity of their workday was dealt with by the participants by taking advantage of common discussions held outside of the organizational hierarchy. Within the base groups they can talk and negotiate with colleagues about their complex workday as leaders in schools and pre-schools. According to the participants, they were able to solve common puzzles, even a health puzzle. The base-group meetings were also perceived as energizing them in their practical role as leaders. The study will be of significance for the continued structuring of base groups as a support for the education and development of headmasters and pre-school leaders. A questionnaire will now be sent to a random number of participants who have completed the headmaster training course.

  • Cereal Byproducts Have Prebiotic Potential in Mice Fed a High-Fat Diet
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0021-8561 .- 1520-5118. ; 62:32, s. 8169-8178
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Barley husks, rye bran, and a fiber residue from oat milk production were processed by heat pretreatment, various separation steps, and treatment with an endoxylanase in order to improve the prebiotic potential of these cereal byproducts. Metabolic functions were intended to improve along with improved microbial activity. The products obtained were included in a high-fat mouse diet so that all diets contained 5% dietary fiber. In addition, high-fat and low-fat controls as well as partially hydrolyzed guar gum were included in the study. The soluble fiber product obtained from rye bran caused a significant increase in the bifidobacteria (log copies of 16S rRNA genes; median (25−75 percentile): 6.38 (6.04−6.66) and 7.47 (7.30−7.74), respectively; p < 0.001) in parallel with a tendency of increased production of propionic acid and indications of improved metabolic function compared with high-fat fed control mice. The oat-derived product caused an increase in the pool of cecal propionic (from 0.62 ± 0.12 to 0.94 ± 0.08) and butyric acid (from 0.38 ± 0.04 to 0.60 ± 0.04) compared with the high-fat control, and it caused a significant increase in lactobacilli (log copies of 16S rRNA genes; median (25−75 percentile): 6.83 (6.65−7.53) and 8.04 (7.86−8.33), respectively; p < 0.01) in the cecal mucosa. However, no changes in measured metabolic parameters were observed by either oat or barley products.

  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Pharmaceutical research. - : Springer Science+Business Media B.V.. - 0724-8741 .- 1573-904X. ; 29:2, s. 574-584
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PURPOSE To outline and test a new modeling approach for prospective predictions of absorption from newly developed modified release formulations based on in vivo studies of gastro intestinal (GI) transit, drug release and regional absorption for the investigational drug AZD0837. METHODS This work was a natural extension to the companion article "A semi-mechanistic model to link in vitro and in vivo drug release for modified release formulations". The drug release model governed the amount of substance released in distinct GI regions over time. GI distribution of released drug substance, region specific rate and extent of absorption and the influence of food intake were estimated. The model was informed by magnetic marker monitoring data and data from an intubation study with local administration in colon. RESULTS Distinctly different absorption properties were characterized for different GI regions. Bioavailability over the gut-wall was estimated to be high in duodenum (70%) compared to the small intestine (25%). Colon was primarily characterized by a very slow rate of absorption. CONCLUSIONS The established model was largely successful in predicting plasma concentration following administration of three newly developed formulations for which no clinical data had been applied during model building.

  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Pharmaceutical research. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0724-8741 .- 1573-904X. ; 29:3, s. 695-706
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PURPOSE: To develop a semi-mechanistic model linking in vitro to in vivo drug release. METHODS: A nonlinear mixed-effects model describing the in vitro drug release for 6 hydrophilic matrix based modified release formulations across different experimental conditions (pH, rotation speed and ionic strength) was developed. It was applied to in vivo observations of drug release and tablet gastro intestinal (GI) position assessed with magnetic marker monitoring (MMM). By combining the MMM observations with literature information on pH and ionic strength along the GI tract, the mechanical stress in different parts of the GI tract could be estimated in units equivalent to rotation speed in the in vitro USP 2 apparatus. RESULTS: The mechanical stress in the upper and lower stomach was estimated to 94 and 134 rpm, respectively. For the small intestine and colon the estimates of mechanical stress was 93 and 38 rpm. Predictions of in vivo drug release including between subject/tablet variability was made for other newly developed formulations based on the drug release model and a model describing tablet GI transit. CONCLUSION: The paper outlines a modeling approach for predicting in vivo behavior from standard in vitro experiments and support formulation development and quality control.

    • It is shown that the queuing delay involved in the congestion control algorithm is state-dependent and does not depend on the current time. Then, using an accurate formulation for buffers, networks with arbitrary topologies can be built. At equilibrium, our model reduces to the widely used setup by Paganini et al. Using this model, the delay-derivative is analyzed and it is proved that the delay time-derivative does not exceed one for the considered topologies. It is then shown that the considered congestion control algorithm globally stabilizes a delay-free single buffer network. Finally, using a specific linearization result for systems with state-dependent delays from Cooke and Huang, we show the local stability of the single bottleneck network.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) for malaria have become valuable tools for the diagnosis of malaria in both endemic and non-endemic areas. During a 7-year period, first the MalaQuick rapid test and then the NOW Malaria test, were evaluated by well-trained laboratory technicians in a university hospital laboratory of parasitology. A total of 635 blood samples were selected from 4731 blood specimens obtained from travellers at the emergency department, at wards and at out-patient clinics. The samples were analysed by microscopy and RDT. Malaria parasites were detected in the blood films of 134 (21%) samples. The sensitivity of the RDT for Plasmodium falciparum was 97.7% (84 of 86 samples) with a negative predictive value of 99.6%. The two false-negative results were associated with low levels of parasitaemia. For non-falciparum species the sensitivity was only 58.3% (28 of 48 samples). Based on the excellent ability of the RDTs to detect P. falciparum infections, we recommend the use of the NOW Malaria test as a complement to microscopy in the laboratory.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Antennas are one of the key components for efficient and reliable vehicular communications systems; especially for safety related applications the antenna performance is crucial. It is therefore important to be able to evaluate the antenna performance under realistic conditions so that the best antenna solution can be selected. In this paper we present a statistical method for evaluating the antenna performance by using the antennas radiation patterns and a multipath simulation tool. The multipath environment is generated by a number of incident waves with a specific angle of arrival distribution, defined by the user. In order to generate voltage samples at the antenna ports many sets of incident waves are generated. This simulates a changing environment as, e.g., when the vehicle is moving. By studying the cumulative distribution functions (CDFs) for the voltage samples we are able to compare the performance for different antenna types, positions on the vehicle, etc. The method is fast and effective and, when applied to typical vehicular propagation environments, the importance of having antennas with radiation patterns capable of covering the whole azimuth plane is demonstrated.

    • Background: The genes caspase-8 (CASP8) and caspase-10 (CASP10) functionally cooperate and play a key role in the initiation of apoptosis. Suppression of apoptosis is one of the major mechanisms underlying the origin and progression of cancer. Previous case-control studies have indicated that the polymorphisms CASP8 D302H and CASP10 V410I are associated with a reduced risk of breast cancer in the general population. Methods: To evaluate whether the CASP8 D302H (CASP10 V410I) polymorphisms modify breast or ovarian cancer risk in BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutation carriers, we analyzed 7,353 (7,227) subjects of white European origin provided by 19 (18) study groups that participate in the Consortium of Investigators of Modifiers of BRCA1/2 (CIMBA). A weighted cohort approach was used to estimate hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI).Results: The minor allele of CASP8 D302H was significantly associated with a reduced risk of breast cancer (per-allele HR, 0.85; 95% CI, 0.76-0.97; Ptrend = 0.011) and ovarian cancer (per-allele HR, 0.69; 95% CI, 0.53-0.89; Ptrend = 0.004) for BRCA1 but not for BRCA2 mutation carriers. The CASP10 V410I polymorphism was not associated with breast or ovarian cancer risk for BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation carriers. Conclusions: CASP8 D302H decreases breast and ovarian cancer risk for BRCA1 mutation carriers but not for BRCA2 mutation carriers.Impact: The combined application of these and other recently identified genetic riskmodifiers could in the future allow better individual risk calculation and could aid in the individualized counseling and decision making with respect to preventive options in BRCA1 mutation carriers.

  • The 'wise list'- a comprehensive concept to select, communicate and achieve adherence to recommendations of essential drugs in ambulatory care in Stockholm
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Basic & Clinical Pharmacology & Toxicology. - Copenhagen : Blackwell Publishing. - 1742-7835 .- 1742-7843. ; 108:4, s. 224-233
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim was to present and evaluate the impact of a comprehensive strategy over 10 years to select, communicate and achieve adherence to essential drug recommendations (EDR) in ambulatory care in a metropolitan healthcare region. EDRs were issued and launched as a 'Wise List' by the regional Drug and Therapeutics Committee in Stockholm. This study presents the concept by: (i) documenting the process for selecting, communicating and monitoring the impact of the 'Wise List'; (ii) analysing the variation in the number of drug substances recommended between 2000 and 2010; (iii) assessing the attitudes to the 'Wise List' among prescribers and the public; (iv) evaluating the adherence to recommendations between 2003 and 2009. The 'Wise List' consistently contained 200 drug substances for treating common diseases. The drugs were selected based on their efficacy, safety, suitability and cost-effectiveness. The 'Wise List' was known among one-third of a surveyed sample of the public in 2002 after initial marketing campaigns. All surveyed prescribers knew about the concept and 81% found the recommendations trustworthy in 2005. Adherence to recommendations increased from 69% in 1999 to 77% in 2009. In primary care, adherence increased from 83% to 87% from 2003 to 2009. The coefficient of variation (CV%) decreased from 6.1% to 3.8% for 156 healthcare centres between these years. The acceptance of the 'Wise List' in terms of trust among physicians and among the public and increased adherence may be explained by clear criteria for drug recommendations, a comprehensive communication strategy, electronic access to recommendations, continuous medical education and involvement of professional networks and patients.

  • Bioavailability of cobalt and nickel during anaerobic digestion of sulfur-rich stillage for biogas formation
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Applied Energy. - : Elsevier. - 0306-2619 .- 1872-9118. ; 112, s. 473-477
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Addition of Co and Ni often improves the production of biogas during digestion of organic matter, i.e. increasing CH4-production, process stability and substrate utilization which often opens for higher organic loading rates (OLRs). The effect of Co and Ni addition was evaluated by measuring methane production, volatile solids reduction, pH and concentration of volatile fatty acids (VFAs). A series of six lab-scale semi-continuously fed biogas tank reactors were used for this purpose. The chemical forms and potential bioavailability of Co and Ni were examined by sequential extraction, acid volatile sulfide extraction (AVS) and simultaneously extracted metals. Furthermore, the sulfur speciation in solid phase was examined by sulfur X-ray absorption near edge structure spectroscopy. The effect of Co and Ni deficiency on the microbial community composition was analyzed using quantitative polymerase chain reaction and 454-pyrosequencing. The results showed that amendment with Co and Ni was necessary to maintain biogas process stability and resulted in increased CH4-production and substrate utilization efficiency. 10-20% of the total Co concentration was in dissolved form and should be regarded as easily accessible by the microorganisms. In contrast, Ni was entirely associated with organic matter/sulfides (mainly AVS) and regarded as very difficult to take up. Still Ni had stimulatory effects suggesting mechanisms such as dissolution of NiS to be involved in the regulation of Ni availability for the microorganisms. The microbial community structure varied in relation to the occurrence of Ni and Co. The acetate-utilizing Methanosarcinales dominated during stable process performance, i.e. when both Co and Ni were supplied, while hydrogenotrophic Methanomicrobiales increased together with VFA concentrations under Co or Ni deficiency. The increase was more pronounced at Co limitation. This study demonstrates that there are good possibilities to improve the performance of biogas processes digesting sulfur-rich substrates by supplementation of Co and Ni.

  • Potential bioavailability and chemical forms of Co and Ni in the biogas process-An evaluation based on sequential and acid volatile sulfide extractions
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Engineering in Life Sciences. - : WILEY-BLACKWELL, 111 RIVER ST, HOBOKEN 07030-5774, NJ USA. - 1618-0240 .- 1618-2863. ; 13:6, s. 572-579
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Several previous studies reported stimulatory effects on biogas process performance after trace metal supplementation. However, the regulation of the bioavailability in relation to chemical speciation, e.g. the role of sulfide is not fully understood. The objective of the present study was to determine the effect of sulfide on chemical speciation and bioavailability of Co and Ni in lab-scale semicontinuous stirred biogas tank reactors treating stillage. The chemical forms and potential bioavailability of Co and Ni were studied by sequential extraction, analysis of acid-volatile sulfide (AVS), and simultaneously extracted metals. The results demonstrated that Ni was completely associated to the organic matter/sulfide fraction and AVS, suggesting low potential bioavailability. Cobalt was predominantly associated to organic matter/sulfide and AVS, but also to more soluble fractions, which are considered to be more bioavailable. Process data showed that both Co and Ni were available for microbial uptake. Although the actual bioavailability of Co could be explained by association to more bioavailable chemical fractions, the complete association of Ni with organic matter/sulfides and AVS implies that Ni was taken up despite its expected low bioavailability. It was concluded that extensive Co- and Ni-sulfide precipitation did not inhibit microbial uptake of Co and Ni in the reactors.

  • Association of nuclear-localized nemo-like kinase with heat-shock protein 27 inhibits apoptosis in human breast cancer cells.
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: PloS one. - : Public Library of Science (PLoS). - 1932-6203. ; 9:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Nemo-like kinase (NLK), a proline-directed serine/threonine kinase regulated by phosphorylation, can be localized in the cytosol or in the nucleus. Whether the localization of NLK can affect cell survival or cell apoptosis is yet to be disclosed. In the present study we found that NLK was mainly localized in the nuclei of breast cancer cells, in contrast to a cytosolic localization in non-cancerous breast epithelial cells. The nuclear localization of NLK was mediated through direct interaction with Heat shock protein 27 (HSP27) which further protected cancer cells from apoptosis. The present study provides evidence of a novel mechanism by which HSP27 recognizes NLK in the breast cancer cells and prevents NLK-mediated cell apoptosis.

  • A method for estimation of average engine fuel maps : power measurements at drive wheels
  • 2010
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • There is a need for engine maps in order to simulate fuel consumption for road vehicles after mechanistic principles. In an engine map, fuel consumption (g/kWh or g/s) is expressed as a function of engine speed and engine torque. In general, there is a considerable lack in engine map data. The main purpose of this study is to develop a tool for assigning any segment of the car fleet a representative engine map. Two methods have been developed: a "matrix" method based on interpolation of measured values to a uniform grid of values and a "function" method based on regressions. The function alternative is in focus in this documentation. The estimated functions have a high degree of explanation (>0,97). On commission of the Swedish Road Administration, Rototest AB has measured stationary fuel consumption and exhaust emissions for more than 400 cars of different year models. If this data set could be used in mechanistic simulation models one could expect increased representativity in different applications. Advantages with the Rototest method, where the engine at measurements is mounted in the vehicle, could be increased representativity and lower costs compared to motor test bench, which is the traditional method for engine map measurements. One problem with the Rototest data set is that engine torque or power, which is needed in an engine map, is not available, only the output power from the final gear box. In order to estimate crankshaft torque, transmission losses need to be estimated.

  • Coastdown measurement with 60-tonne truck and trailer : estimation of transmission, rolling and air resistance
  • 2012

  • Rolling resistance model, fuel consumption model and the traffic energy saving potential from changed road surface conditions
  • 2012

  • 2010
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Occupational and Environmental Health. - 1077-3525. ; 16:2, s. 124-135
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study evaluates respiratory symptoms, lung function, and exposure to airborne particles among waste-picking children. We enrolled 103 waste-picking children at a dump in Managua, Nicaragua and 103 children who do not pick waste. Exposure to airborne particles was assessed by area sampling. Health data were obtained from a questionnaire, clinical examination, and spirometry. Exposure effects were evaluated with multivariate regression analysis. Exposure to particles exceeded national and international standards. Wheezing among children was related to exposure status, with waste-picking children who are both "never highly exposed" and "ever highly exposed" having greater prevalence of wheezing compared to the children who do not pick waste. FEV1 among "ever highly exposed" waste-picking children with wheeze was 13% lower than non-waste-picking children with wheeze. Exposure to small particles was unacceptably high and associated with wheeze and decreased lung function.

  • Zoospore chemotaxis of closely related legume-root infecting Phytophthora species towards host isoflavones
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Plant Pathology. - : Wiley. - 0032-0862 .- 1365-3059. ; 63, s. 708-714
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Phytophthora niederhauserii, P.pisi, P.sojae and P.vignae are closely related species that are pathogenic to various legume plants. While P.sojae and P.vignae are reported to specifically infect soybean and cowpea, respectively, P.pisi is reported to attack pea and faba bean. Phytophthora niederhauserii is considered to have a broad host range. Zoospores of some Phytophthora species are chemotactically attracted to the isoflavones that are secreted by their host plants. The focus of the current study was to determine the chemotaxic behaviour of zoospores from closely related legume-root infecting Phytophthora species and to investigate the correlation, if any, to host preference as determined by greenhouse pathogenicity tests. The results showed that P.sojae and P.vignae were attracted to the non-soybean isoflavone prunetin as well as to the soybean isoflavones genistein and daidzein, which is in contrast with their host specificity on soybean and cowpea, respectively. On the other hand, P.pisi and P.niederhauserii were only attracted to prunetin, previously reported to be produced by pea, but not to the isoflavones associated with the non-host soybean. The lack of responsiveness to genistein and daidzein in P.pisi may represent a recent adaptation to the host specialization towards pea. However, the affinity of P.niederhauserii to prunetin shows that this trait can also be present in taxa not specifically associated with legume hosts.

  • Ingår i: Aging & Mental Health. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1360-7863 .- 1364-6915. ; 15:5, s. 573-579
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: Physically violent behaviour (PVB) is common among residents with dementia and often complicates nursing care. This study aims to explore types of caring situations, resident characteristics related to PVB and professional caregivers' management of PVB.Methods: The study included 40 group homes for 309 residents with dementia. Data was gathered by means of structured interviews, the Multi-Dimensional Dementia Assessment Scale and the Geriatric Rating Scale. Results: Ninety-eight of the residents (31.7%) were assessed as showing PVB during the preceding week. Three factors were independently associated with PVB: male gender, antipsychotic treatment and decline in orientation. Violent residents were more likely to have impaired speech, difficulties understanding verbal communication and prescribed analgesics and antipsychotics than were non-violent residents. PVB occurred mainly in intimate helping situations and was managed by symptom-oriented approaches, such as distraction, medication and isolation. The working team also held frequent discussions about the residents with PVB.Conclusion: This study shows that PVB is frequently displayed among residents in group homes for persons with dementia and the caregivers mainly manage PVB in a symptom-oriented way. To enhance the quality of care for patients with dementia, there is a need for interventions that aim to understand and manage the residents' physical violent behaviour.

  • Ingår i: Physical & Occupational Therapy in Geriatrics. - Philadelphia : Taylor & Francis. - 0270-3181 .- 1541-3152. ; 29:2, s. 136-147
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objectives: To investigate the ability of the ADL-staircase to predict mortality among older people receiving long-term formal health care and service.Method: This study comprises 626 respondents. Data were collected for 2 cohorts. Results: Crude mortality rate ranged between 9% and 23%. Higher scores on the ADL-staircase significantly increased the risk of mortality (RR = 1.253). For the total sample, Youden's index suggested a cutoff value of 6 for mortality on the ADL-staircase. A cutoff value of 4 was suggested for those living at home and 7 for those in special accommodation. Regression analysis, using these cutoff values, showed a significant association with mortality. Conclusion: Knowledge of how to use the ADL-staircase as a mortality predictor is limited. This study not only found a cutoff point for the total sample but also when grouped by type of housing. The findings may be useful when allocating care and service and when providing preventive interventions and palliative care. © 2011 Informa Healthcare USA, Inc.

  • 2012

  • Bleeding complications after central line insertions: relevance of pre-procedure coagulation tests and institutional transfusion policy.
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Acta Anaesthesiologica Scandinavica. - : Wiley. - 0001-5172. ; 57:5, s. 573-579
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to map pre-procedural variables for insertion of a central venous catheter, prophylactic blood component use and to investigate whether any independent variable could be identified as an independent risk factor for associated bleeding complications in patients outside the intensive care unit. METHODS: In this retrospective study, we investigated 1737 consecutive insertions of central venous catheters in 1444 patients in a large university hospital during 2009-2010. Pre-procedural coagulation status, blood component use, type of catheter, insertion site and complications during insertion were recorded and compared with bleeding complications documented on electronic charts. RESULTS: No serious bleeding complications were recorded in connection with the insertion of central venous catheters. Sixteen of 1769 (0.9%) insertions caused grade 2 bleeding, defined as bleeding requiring prolonged compression at the insertion site. Insertion of a large bore central dialysis catheter was found to be an independent risk factor for bleeding complications. Neither conventional coagulation tests nor accidental arterial puncture or the number of needle passes could predict bleeding complications in this study. CONCLUSION: This retrospective study, in non-ICU patients, shows that serious bleeding complications in association with central line insertions are uncommon and that insertion of a large bore catheter is likely to be an independent risk factor for mild-bleeding complications in this population.

  • Biomarkers in non-small cell lung carcinoma : methodological aspects and influence of gender, histology and smoking habits on estrogen receptor and epidermal growth factor family receptor signalling
  • 2011
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Non-small cell lung carcinoma is a leading cause of cancer mortality worldwide. There are gender and smoking associated differences both in tumour types and clinical outcome. Squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) are more frequent among smoking men while females develop adenocarcinomas (ADCA). NSCLC among never smokers are mainly ADCA, and occurs mostly in females. The present thesis elucidates the role of estrogen receptor (ER) and epidermal growth factor receptor family (EGFR/HER2-4) in NSCLC in the perspective of gender and histology as well as the influence of smoking on those biomarkers. A recently developed technique, tissue micro array (TMA), was employed. The question of how much of a tumour tissue that needed to be included in a TMA for biomarker analysis was analyzed by a statistical approach. Data indicates a sample size of three cylinders of tumour tissue with a diameter of 0.6 mm each as being appropriate and cost-effective. In order to optimally use the up to thousands of different tumour samples within a TMA, it would be optimal to serially cut and store slides before performing in situ detection of proteins and nucleic acids. Applying up to date methodology, and by evaluation with image analysis, data are presented that shows that such handling of TMA slides would be possible without any loss of biomarker information. ERα is more frequently observed in ADCA and in females and a local estradiol synthesis is supported by the presence of aromatase. ERβ is identified as a positive prognostic marker in ADCA. Smoking is associated to increased levels of ERβ mRNA. EGFR over expression is associated with a ligand. Independent phosporylation of ERα. HER-4 intracellular domain may also act as a co-activator to ERα in ADCA, especially among neversmokers. The question of ER and EGFR family signalling crosstalk as a potential target for combined targeted therapy is raised.
