  • Towards discriminating between zones with different thermal behaviour in cities
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: 2017 Joint Urban Remote Sensing Event, JURSE 2017. Dubai, United Arab Emirates; 6-8 March 2017.. - 9781509058082
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The advances in satellite sensor technology, the launch of new satellites and the continuous development of remote sensing technology constantly increase the opportunities for monitoring the thermal behaviour of cities from space. Not only the surface temperature, but several other parameters related to the urban climate can be quantified from Earth Observation (EO) data. In this study, remote sensing techniques are applied to derive EO data products and a methodology is proposed that combines this information to discriminate between zones with different thermal behaviour in cities. Information on the building, pervious and paved surface cover, the surface albedo, the mean building/tree height and the sky view factor is quantified in local scale and then used to identify possible zones with homogeneous thermal characteristics.

  • Immune function and organochlorine pollutants in arctic breeding glaucous gulls
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Archives of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0090-4341 .- 1432-0703. ; 47:4, s. 530-541
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Organochlorine contaminants (OCs) are known to affect the immune systems of wildlife, and in this study we assessed the relationship between blood concentration of different OCs and measurements relevant to immune status and function in arctic breeding glaucous gulls (Larus hyperboreus). In 1997 and 2001, we counted white blood cells (heterophils and lymphocytes) from blood smears, and in 2000 and 2001 we injected two novel nonpathogenic antigens (diphtheria and tetanus toxoids) into the pectoral muscle of gulls and measured the primary antibody responses. We then related these measurements to the blood concentrations of three pesticides (hexachlorobenzene [HCB], oxychlordane, and p,p'-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene) and seven different polychlorinated biphenyl congeners (PCB 101, 99, 118, 153, 138, 180, and 170). There were significant or near significant positive relationships (0.1 > p > 0.001) between most persistent OCs and the levels of heterophils in the blood for both sexes in 1997 and for male gulls in 2001. Similarly, levels of all persistent OCs and lymphocytes were positively related (0.1 > p > 0.001) in both sexes in 1997. This suggests that OCs are causing alterations to immune systems, which may decrease their efficiency and make the birds more susceptible to parasites and diseases. In female gulls, the antibody response to the diphtheria toxoid was significant and negative for HCB (p <0.01) and weaker, but significant, for oxychlordane (p <0.05), suggesting that OCs were causing an impairment of the humoral immunity. Various OCs have been linked to negative effects in our study population, including decreased survival and reproduction, and this study suggests that such compounds also affect immune status and function.

  • Characterization of resistance to quinolones, sulfonamide and trimethoprim in Campylobacter jejuni as well as to macrolides in the related bacterium, Helicobacter pylori
  • 1999
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Gastroenteritis caused by C. jejuni is usually a mild to moderate self-limiting disease. Treatment is recommended in some cases. In recent years, quinolones have been increasingly used to treat acute bacterial enteritis. Quinolone resistance in clinical isolates of C. jejuni in Sweden increased more than 20-fold at the beginning of 1990s. Quinolone resistance in C. jejuni was found to be associated with chromosomal mutations leading to a Thr-86-to Ile substitution in the gyrA gene and an Arg-139-to Gln substitution in the parC gene.Sulfonamides and trimethoprim have always been considered as inefficient antimicrobial agents for the treatment of Campylobacter infections. Detailed studies regarding the molecular basis of resistance to sulfonamide and trimethoprim in C. jejuni are lacking. Further data about the molecular basis of resistance might be a good contribution to the general understanding of the nathogenicity of C. jejuni. Resistance of C. jejuni to a high-level of trimethoprim was found to be due to the acquisition of dfr genes expressing-drug-resistant variants of the target enzyme, dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR). The most commonly found gene was dfr1 but another gene, dfr9,was also detected. These genes were observed to be chromosomally located in an integron and a transposon context, respectively. In some cases, a 90 bp repeat-containing variant of the dfr1 gene was detected. Moreover, in 5% of the examined C. jejuni strains, the repeat-containing dfr 1 variant was found to occur in the form of two cassettes in tandem located in an integron context. The existence of the 90 bp repeat within the coding sequence of the dfr 1 gene was found to play a role in the adaptability of C. jejuni isolates to the variation in the selection pressure induced by trimethoprim. The acquisition of sulfonamide resistance, however, was found to be associated with the mutational substitution of four amino acid residues in the chromosomal folP gene of C. jejuni. Kinetic measurements established different affinities of sulfonamide for the DHPS enzyme isolated from the resistant and susceptible strains.Treatment regimen with clarithromycin has been found to cure H. pylori infection efficiently. The development of macrolide resistance should be monitored during the course of the treatment. Transition mutations in the 23S rRNA gene at locations corresponding to macrolide resistance in other bacteria were observed. No other mechanisms of resistance were detected.

  • Amplification of ship generated wake wash due to coastal effects
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Transactions - Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers. - 0081-1661. ; 111, s. 61-77
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper discusses the results from extensive wake wash measurements carried out with a model of a ROPAX ship passing a bay. The tests were carried out in SSPA 's sea-keeping and maneuvering basin. This model had been subjected to wash wave measurements in open water in previous tests, which gave possibilities for comparisons between restricted and unrestricted waters'. Six wave gauges were placed inside and outside the bay, and a significant drawdown was noticed in addition to amplifications of the Kelvin waves. The drawdown and the Kelvin waves that occurred in the bay are difficult to explain, but this paper makes an attempt to analyze the phenomena that occur. The different wave theories that can be used in this case are presented The methods that are used for analyzing the measured signals are described One conclusion that can be made is that drawdown caused by the Bernoulli wave can probably be considered a worse problem than ordinary wash waves (Kelvin waves) in restricted and especially shallow waters when looking at large displacement ships.
