  • Precision electroweak measurements on the Z resonance
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Physics Reports. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-1573 .- 1873-6270. ; 427:5-6, s. 257-454
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on the final electroweak measurements performed with data taken at the Z resonance by the experiments operating at the electron-positron colliders SLC and LEP. The data consist of 17 million Z decays accumulated by the ALEPH, DELPHI, L3 and OPAL experiments at LEP, and 600 thousand Z decays by the SLID experiment using a polarised beam at SLC. The measurements include cross-sections, forward-backward asymmetries and polarised asymmetries. The mass and width of the Z boson, m(Z) and Gamma(Z), and its couplings to fermions, for example the p parameter and the effective electroweak mixing angle for leptons, are precisely measured: m(Z) = 91.1875 +/- 0.0021 GeV, Gamma(Z) = 2.4952 +/- 0.0023 GeV, rho(l) = 1.0050 +/- 0.0010, sin(2)theta(eff)(lept) = 0.23153 +/- 0.00016. The number of light neutrino species is determined to be 2.9840 +/- 0.0082, in agreement with the three observed generations of fundamental fermions. The results are compared to the predictions of the Standard Model (SM). At the Z-pole, electroweak radiative corrections beyond the running of the QED and QCD coupling constants are observed with a significance of five standard deviations, and in agreement with the Standard Model. Of the many Z-pole measurements, the forward-backward asymmetry in b-quark production shows the largest difference with respect to its SM expectation, at the level of 2.8 standard deviations. Through radiative corrections evaluated in the framework of the Standard Model, the Z-pole data are also used to predict the mass of the top quark, m(t) = 173(+10)(+13) GeV, and the mass of the W boson, m(W) = 80.363 +/- 0.032 GeV. These indirect constraints are compared to the direct measurements, providing a stringent test of the SM. Using in addition the direct measurements of m(t) and m(W), the mass of the as yet unobserved SM Higgs boson is predicted with a relative uncertainty of about 50% and found to be less than 285 GeV at 95% confidence level. • Overactive bladder is associated with erectile dysfunction and reduced sexual quality of life in men
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Sexual Medicine. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 1743-6109 .- 1743-6095. ; 5:12, s. 2904-10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introduction. The prevalence of sexual dysfunction, including erectile dysfunction (ED), is greater in men with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), including overactive bladder (OAB), than in men without LUTS. Aim. To evaluate the prevalence of ED, the impact of urinary symptoms on sexual activity and sexual enjoyment, and sexual satisfaction in men with OAB. Methods. A nested case-control analysis was performed on data from a subset of men with (cases) and without (controls) OAB frequency-matched for age (5-year age strata) and country from the EPIC study. Respondents were asked about OAB symptoms (using the 2002 International Continence Society [ICS] definitions) and sexual activity. Sexually active respondents were asked about ED, sexual enjoyment, and overall satisfaction with their sex lives. Conditional logistic regression was used to assess factors associated with ED. Main Outcome Measures. The percentage of cases and controls reporting ED, a reduction in the frequency of sexual activity or enjoyment of sexual activity because of urinary symptoms, and overall satisfaction with their sex lives was determined for cases and controls. Results. A total of 502 cases and 502 controls were matched for age strata and country. Significantly more cases (14%) reported reduced sexual activity because of urinary symptoms compared with controls (4%; P

  • Very compact FTTH Diplexer design using advanced wafer level fabrication methods
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: MICRO-OPTICS 2008. - Strasbourg : SPIE.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • FTTH networks require implementing a diplexer at each user termination. According to most of the standards, this diplexer detects a download signal beam at 1.49ÎŒm and emits an upload signal beam at 1.31ÎŒm on the same single mode fibre. Both signals exhibit datarate speed below 2.5Gbps. Today, most of the diplexers are obtained by actively aligning a set of individual optoelectronic components and micro-optics. However, new manufacturing solutions satisfying very low cost and mass production capability requirements of this market would help to speed the massive spreading of this technology. In this paper, we present an original packaging design to manufacture Diplexer Optical Sub-Assembly for FTTH application. A dual photodiode is stacked over a VCSEL and detects both the download signal beam at 1.49ÎŒm passing through the laser and one part of the upload signal beam at 1.31ÎŒm for monitoring. To satisfy this approach, an innovative VCSEL has been designed to have a very high transmission at 1.49ÎŒm. All these components are mounted on a very small circuit board on glass including also integrated circuits such as transimpedance amplifier. So, the device combines advanced optoelectronic components and highly integrated Multi-Chip-Module on glass approach using collective wafer-level assembling technologies. For the single mode fibre optical coupling, active and passive alignment solutions are considered.

  • Reduction of temporomandibular joint pain after treatment with a combination of methotrexate and infliximab is associated with changes in synovial fluid and plasma cytokines in rheumatoid arthritis
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Cells, tissues, organs. - : S. Karger AG. - 1422-6405 .- 1422-6421. ; 180:1, s. 22-30
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aims were to investigate the effect of intravenous infusions of the tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) antibody infliximab on symptoms and signs of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) involvement in relation to effects on synovial fluid and plasma proinflammatory TNF-α, interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and interleukin-6 as well as antiinflam matory soluble TNF receptor II (TNF-sRII), interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1ra), soluble IL-1 receptor II (IL-1sRII) and interleukin-10 (IL-10) in patients with active rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Nineteen patients with TMJ involvement taking methotrexate were included in the study. TMJ and general joint pain intensity as well as pain on mandibular movements, tenderness to digital palpation, pressure pain threshold and maximum mouth-opening capacity were assessed in a clinical examination. The effect of infliximab was assessed after 2 and 14 or 22 weeks. TMJ synovial fluid and venous blood were collected for cytokine analysis at all occasions while determination of erythrocyte sedimentation rate and C-reactive protein were performed at baseline and at long-term follow-up only. Reduction of TMJ pain was associated with raised levels of synovial fluid TNF-sRII and IL-1sRII as well as raised plasma levels of IL-1ra and IL-10. Decreased erythrocyte sedimentation rate was associated with decreased tenderness to digital palpation. Reduced general joint pain intensity was associated with reduced plasma levels of IL-6 and C-reactive protein. In conclusion, systemic treatment with a combination of infliximab and methotrexate reduces TMJ pain in RA in association with an increase in anti-inflammatory cytokines and receptors in synovial fluid and plasma.

  • Population-based survey of urinary incontinence, overactive bladder, and other lower urinary tract symptoms in five countries: results of the EPIC study
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Eur Urol. - : Elsevier BV. - 0302-2838. ; 50:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE: Estimate the prevalence of urinary incontinence (UI), overactive bladder (OAB), and other lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) among men and women in five countries using the 2002 International Continence Society (ICS) definitions. METHODS: This population-based, cross-sectional survey was conducted between April and December 2005 in Canada, Germany, Italy, Sweden, and the United Kingdom using computer-assisted telephone interviews. A random sample of men and women aged >/= 18 yr residing in the five countries and who were representative of the general populations in these countries was selected. Using 2002 ICS definitions, the prevalence estimates of storage, voiding, and postmicturition LUTS were calculated. Data were stratified by country, age cohort, and gender. RESULTS: A total of 19,165 individuals agreed to participate; 64.3% reported at least one LUTS. Nocturia was the most prevalent LUTS (men, 48.6%; women, 54.5%). The prevalence of storage LUTS (men, 51.3%; women, 59.2%) was greater than that for voiding (men, 25.7%; women, 19.5%) and postmicturition (men, 16.9%; women, 14.2%) symptoms combined. The overall prevalence of OAB was 11.8%; rates were similar in men and women and increased with age. OAB was more prevalent than all types of UI combined (9.4%). CONCLUSIONS: The EPIC study is the largest population-based survey to assess prevalence rates of OAB, UI, and other LUTS in five countries. To date, this is the first study to evaluate these symptoms simultaneously using the 2002 ICS definitions. The results indicate that these symptoms are highly prevalent in the countries surveyed.

  • The overlap of storage, voiding and postmicturition symptoms and implications for treatment seeking in the USA, UK and Sweden: EpiLUTS
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: BJU International. - 1464-410X. ; 103:Suppl 3, s. 12-23
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE: To assess the (i) the overlap between voiding, storage, and postmicturition symptoms; and (ii) the relative effect of bother and implications for treatment seeking within these symptom groups, using data from the EpiLUTS study. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional population-representative survey was conducted via the Internet in the USA, the UK and Sweden. Participants were asked to rate the frequency and symptom-specific bother of individual LUTS. Descriptive statistics were used to examine differences in International Continence Society LUTS subgroups. Logistc regressions were used with treatment seeking as the dependent variable and the bother of individual symptoms as predictors. RESULTS: The survey response rate was 59%. The sample included 30,000 participants (14,139 men and 15,861 women); 71% of men and 75% of women reported at least one LUTS, and about half reported LUTS from more than one symptom group. Rates of bother were greatest for those who reported multiple storage, voiding and postmicturition LUTS (men 83%, women 89%). Less than a third of participants with LUTS from all three groups reported seeking treatment. Consistent correlates of treatment seeking across genders included bother due to weak stream, incomplete emptying, perceived daytime frequency, nocturia and urgency. There were also significant associations for several types of incontinence, most commonly stress incontinence in women and leaking during sexual activity in men. Despite high rates of symptom overlap and symptom-specific bother, few participants sought treatment for LUTS. CONCLUSION: Common conditions such as BPH and OAB are treatable, and clinicians should proactively ask patients about urinary symptoms. Given the many types of LUTS that patients experience, it is imperative that clinicians assess all LUTS to ensure that appropriate treatments are prescribed.

  • Highly integrated VCSEL-based 10Gb/s miniature optical sub-assembly
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Proceedings - Electronic Components and Technology Conference. - Lake Buena Vista, FL : IEEE. ; , s. 1333-1338
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In order to fit with the present and future needs of the Datacom transceiver market, newly designed high rate transmitter optical subassemblies (TOSAs) have to be compact, low cost and compatible with mass production. We propose here an innovative design strategy that reaches all these targets by integrating a 10Gbps 850nmVCSEL laser diode and its laser driver with other functionalities (e.g. power monitoring and thermal monitoring) in a small form factor package. Taking advantages of the optical properties of the VCSEL and using flip-chip techniques, the transmitter exhibits excellent hyperfrequency performances and compatibility with mass production due to the use of collective manufacturing technologies and passive optical alignment. This versatile approach is also applicable to high rate receivers, parallel optics emitters, and singlemode low cost transmitter integrating long wavelength VCSELs.

  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Environmental Geosciences. - : American Association of Petroleum Geologists AAPG/Datapages. - 1075-9565 .- 1526-0984. ; 13:3, s. 145-161
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Since April 2004, preparatory work prior to CO2injection hasbeen conducted in the CO2SINK Project, the European Union’sfirst research and development activity on the in-situ testing ofgeological storage of CO2near the town of Ketzin, Germany.Carbon dioxide will be injected into a saline aquifer of the TriassicStuttgart Formation in an anticlinal structure of the northeastGerman Basin. The drilling of one injection and two observationwells will commence at the end of 2006. The predrilling phasefocuses on the baseline geological parameters of the anticline. TheStuttgart Formation is lithologically heterogeneous; it consists ofsandy channel-(string)-facies rocks, with good reservoir propertiesalternating with muddy flood-plain-facies rocks of poor reservoirquality. Playa-type rocks form the immediate cap rock above theCO2SINK reservoir. A geostatistical approach has been applied todescribe the reservoir architecture between and beyond well con-trol. This model forms the basis for the generation of reservoir-dynamic models of CO2injection that assist in the planning ofinjection operations and in the understanding of CO2plume evo-lution. A verification of the geometry of the reservoir and thestructural situation of its overburden is expected from a three-dimensional baseline seismic survey that was conducted in theautumn of 2005. Laboratory experiments under simulated in-situconditions were performed to evaluate the geophysical signatureof rocks saturated with CO2. The chemical composition of thegroundwater and the CO2flux in the soil were analyzed across theKetzin anticline, providing the baseline for a monitoring programduring and after injection of CO2, targeted at the detection ofpotential CO2leakage from the storage reservoir.

  • Prevalence, Severity, and Symptom Bother of Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms among Men in the EPIC Study: Impact of Overactive Bladder
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: European Urology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0302-2838. ; 56:1, s. 14-20
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) are prevalent among men. OBJECTIVE: To describe the prevalence, severity, and symptom bother of LUTS in all men and men with overactive bladder (OAB) symptoms in the EPIC study. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A secondary analysis of data from EPIC, a multinational population-based survey of 19 165 adults, was performed. Current International Continence Society definitions were used for individual LUTS and OAB; OAB cases were defined as men reporting urgency. MEASUREMENTS: Participants were asked about the presence of individual LUTS and associated symptom bother. LUTS severity was measured using the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS). RESULTS AND LIMITATIONS: There was substantial overlap of storage, voiding, and postmicturition symptoms among all men (n=7210) and in men with OAB symptoms (n=502); men with OAB symptoms were more likely to experience multiple LUTS subtypes. Among both populations, nocturia was the most commonly reported symptom, except for urgency (the hallmark symptom) among men with OAB symptoms; terminal dribble and sensation of incomplete emptying were the most common voiding and postmicturition symptoms. The prevalence of all LUTS increased with age among the general population; only storage LUTS increased with age among men with OAB symptoms. Number of LUTS and mean IPSS increased with age in both populations but were higher among men with OAB symptoms at all ages; the proportion reporting moderate-severe LUTS was higher than the general population (30% vs 6%). The proportion of men with OAB symptoms reporting symptom bother increased with urgency severity and severity and number of LUTS. LUTS severity may have been underestimated by the IPSS, which does not assess incontinence. CONCLUSIONS: Men with LUTS commonly experience coexisting storage, voiding, and postmicturition symptoms, emphasizing the need for comprehensive urologic assessments. Men with OAB symptoms reported more LUTS and greater severity than the general population. Symptom bother was related to number of LUTS and urgency severity.

  • Genome characteristics of facultatively symbiotic Frankia sp. strains reflect host range and host plant biogeography.
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Genome Research. - : Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. - 1088-9051. ; 17:1, s. 7-15
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Soil bacteria that also form mutualistic symbioses in plants encounter two major levels of selection. One occurs during adaptation to and survival in soil, and the other occurs in concert with host plant speciation and adaptation. Actinobacteria from the genus Frankia are facultative symbionts that form N2-fixing root nodules on diverse and globally distributed angiosperms in the "actinorhizal" symbioses. Three closely related clades of Frankia sp. strains are recognized; members of each clade infect a subset of plants from among eight angiosperm families. We sequenced the genomes from three strains; their sizes varied from 5.43 Mbp for a narrow host range strain (Frankia sp. strain HFPCcI3) to 7.50 Mbp for a medium host range strain (Frankia alni strain ACN14a) to 9.04 Mbp for a broad host range strain (Frankia sp. strain EAN1pec.) This size divergence is the largest yet reported for such closely related soil bacteria (97.8%–98.9% identity of 16S rRNA genes). The extent of gene deletion, duplication, and acquisition is in concert with the biogeographic history of the symbioses and host plant speciation. Host plant isolation favored genome contraction, whereas host plant diversification favored genome expansion. The results support the idea that major genome expansions as well as reductions can occur in facultative symbiotic soil bacteria as they respond to new environments in the context of their symbioses.

  • Macrocephaly in Bull Spermatozoa Is Associated with Nuclear Vacuoles, Diploidy and Alteration of Chromatin Condensation
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Cytogenetic and Genome Research. - : S. Karger. - 1424-8581 .- 1424-859X. ; 126:1-2, s. 202-209
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Spermatozoa from 2 dairy AI (artificial insemination) bulls (A and B), identified by their abnormal spermiogram with cells depicting frequent macrocephaly, double tails and nuclear vacuoles, were case-investigated and compared to normal spermatozoa from a control AI sire (C). Head sizes were measured and morphological abnormalities scored using brightfield and differential interference contrast microscopy. The degree of sperm maturation and of resistance to acid-induced DNA denaturation in situ were determined after uploading of acridine orange using flow cytometry of 5,000 cells/sample. Nuclear fragmentation, i.e. the ratio of red to total (red + green) fluorescence, reached 7.1% and 31% in bulls A and B, compared to 2% in bull C. The proportion of immature spermatozoa, i.e. those with incomplete histone-protamine exchange and depicting higher green fluorescence compared to the main population of the control bull, reached 9.54% in A and 7.75% in B, compared to only 0.47% in the control. In the second part of this study the previously unknown chromosomal constitution of large-headed spermatozoa of bull A was investigated by fluorescence in situ hybridization using an X-Y painting probe set. The 7.5% XY-bearing cells and the presence of diploid spermatozoa detected by flow cytometry indicate a meiotic arrest in the first division in bull A, becoming the first proven case of association of macrocephaly and M1 diploidy. The diverse approaches used for the investigation of spermatozoal DNA provide insights into the etiology of macrocephaly. Copyright (C) 2009 S. Karger AG, Basel

  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Atmospheric Chemistry And Physics. - : Copernicus GmbH. - 1680-7316 .- 1680-7324. ; 7:13, s. 3639-3662
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper characterizes vertical ozone profiles retrieved with the IMK-IAA (Institute for Meteorology and Climate Research, Karlsruhe – Instituto de Astrofisica de Andalucia) science-oriented processor from high spectral resolution data (until March 2004) measured by the Michelson Interferometer for Passive Atmospheric Sounding (MIPAS) aboard the environmental satellite Envisat. Bias determination and precision validation is performed on the basis of correlative measurements by ground-based lidars, Fourier transform infrared spectrometers, and microwave radiometers as well as balloon-borne ozonesondes, the balloon-borne version of MIPAS, and two satellite instruments (Halogen Occultation Experiment and Polar Ozone and Aerosol Measurement III). Percentage mean differences between MIPAS and the comparison instruments for stratospheric ozone are generally within ±10%. The precision in this altitude region is estimated at values between 5 and 10% which gives an accuracy of 15 to 20%. Below 18 km, the spread of the percentage mean differences is larger and the precision degrades to values of more than 20% depending on altitude and latitude. The main reason for the degraded precision at low altitudes is attributed to undetected thin clouds which affect MIPAS retrievals, and to the influence of uncertainties in the water vapor concentration.
