  • Studies of Enterovirus Infection and Induction of Innate Immunity in Human Pancreatic Cells
  • 2016
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Several epidemiological and clinical studies have indicated a possible role of Enterovirus (EV) infection in type 1 diabetes (T1D) development. However, the exact casual mechanism of these viruses in T1D development is not known. The aim of this thesis is to study various EVs that have been shown to differ in their immune phenotype, lytic ability, association with induction of islet autoantibodies, ability to replicate, cause islet disintegration and induce innate antiviral pathways in infected pancreatic cells in vitro. Furthermore, EV presence and pathogenic process in pancreatic tissue and isolated islets of T1D patients was also studied.Studies in this thesis for first time show the detection of EV RNA and protein in recent onset live T1D patients supporting the EV hypothesis in T1D development. Further all EV serotypes studied were able to replicate in islets, causing variable amount of islet disintegration ranging from extensive islet disintegration to not affecting islet morphology at all. However, one of the EV serotype replicated in only two out of seven donors infected, highlighting the importance of individual variation between donors. Further, this serotype impaired the insulin response to glucose stimulation without causing any visible islet disintegration, suggesting that this serotype might impaired the insulin response by inducing a functional block. Infection of human islets with the EV serotypes that are differentially associated with the development of islet autoantibodies showed the islet cell disintegration that is comparable with their degree of islet autoantibody seroconversion. Suggesting that the extent of the epidemic-associated islet autoantibody induction may depend on the ability of the viral serotypes to damage islet cells. Furthermore, one of the EV strains showed unique ability to infect and replicate both in endo and exocrine cells of the pancreas. EV replication in both endo and exocrine cells affected the genes involved in innate and antiviral pathways and induction of certain genes with important antiviral activity significantly varied between different donors. Suggesting that the same EV infection could result in different outcome in different individuals. Finally, we compared the results obtained by lytic and non lytic EV strains in vitro with the findings reported in fulminant and slowly progressing autoimmune T1D and found some similarities. In conclusion the results presented in this thesis further support the role of EV in T1D development and provide more insights regarding viral and host variation.  This will improve our understanding of the possible causative mechanism by EV in T1D development.

  • Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer clinical and biomarkers data sharing resource document: Volume II-practical challenges
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal for immunotherapy of cancer. - : BMJ. - 2051-1426. ; 8:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The development of strongly predictive validated biomarkers is essential for the field of immuno-oncology (IO) to advance. The highly complex, multifactorial data sets required to develop these biomarkers necessitate effective, responsible data-sharing efforts in order to maximize the scientific knowledge and utility gained from their collection. While the sharing of clinical- and safety-related trial data has already been streamlined to a large extent, the sharing of biomarker-aimed clinical trial derived data and data sets has been met with a number of hurdles that have impaired the progression of biomarkers from hypothesis to clinical use. These hurdles include technical challenges associated with the infrastructure, technology, workforce, and sustainability required for clinical biomarker data sharing. To provide guidance and assist in the navigation of these challenges, the Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer (SITC) Biomarkers Committee convened to outline the challenges that researchers currently face, both at the conceptual level (Volume I) and at the technical level (Volume II). The committee also suggests possible solutions to these problems in the form of professional standards and harmonized requirements for data sharing, assisting in continued progress toward effective, clinically relevant biomarkers in the IO setting.

  • The impacts of others' drinking on mental health
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Medical Journal of Australia. - 0025-729X .- 1326-5377. ; 195:3, s. 22-26
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE:To analyse the links between other people's drinking and mental health and to explore the effects on mental health of heavy and problematic drinkers both within and outside spousal relationships.DESIGN, SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS:A secondary analysis of data obtained as part of the Alcohol's Harm to Others survey from 2622 randomly sampled Australian adults interviewed by telephone between October and December 2008.MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES:Self-reported anxiety or depression and satisfaction with mental wellbeing; the presence of heavy and problematic drinkers in respondents' lives.RESULTS:Identification of at least one heavy drinker in the respondents' social network of friends, family and co-workers was significantly negatively associated with self-reported mental wellbeing and anxiety or depression. If the heavy drinker was identified by the respondent as someone whose drinking had had a negative impact on their life in the past year, the adverse effect on mental wellbeing and anxiety was much greater.CONCLUSIONS:Our findings support a causal pathway between alcohol use and mental health problems by way of someone else's drinking. The association with adverse mental health is substantial regardless of the type of relationship an individual has with the heavy drinker whose drinking has had an adverse effect on them.

  • Cerebrospinal fluid neurofilament light chain tracks cognitive impairment in multiple sclerosis
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Neurology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0340-5354 .- 1432-1459. ; 266:9, s. 2157-2163
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background Cognitive impairment (CI) is a disabling symptom of multiple sclerosis (MS). Axonal damage disrupts neural circuits and may play a role in determining CI, but its detection and monitoring are not routinely performed. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) neurofilament light chain (NfL) is a promising marker of axonal damage in MS. Objective To retrospectively examine the relationship between CSF NfL and CI in MS patients. Methods CSF NfL concentration was measured in 28 consecutive newly diagnosed MS patients who underwent a neuropsychological evaluation with the Brief Repeatable Battery of Neuropsychological tests (BRBN). Results CSF NfL was higher in patients with overall CI (947.8 +/- 400.7 vs 518.4 +/- 424.7 pg/mL, p < 0.01), and with impairment in information processing speed (IPS) (820.8 +/- 413.6 vs 513.6 +/- 461.4 pg/mL, p < 0.05) and verbal fluency (1292 +/- 511 vs 582.8 +/- 395.4 pg/mL, p < 0.05), and it positively correlated with the number of impaired BRBN tests (r = 0.48, p = 0.01) and cognitive domains (r = 0.47, p = 0.01). Multivariate analyses taking into account potential confounders confirmed these findings. Conclusion CSF NfL is higher in MS patients with CI and impaired IPS and verbal fluency. Large myelinated axons injury, causing neural disconnection, may be an important determinant of CI in MS and can be reliably measured through CSF NfL.

  • Factors Influencing Separation Selectivity of Rare Earth Elements in Flat Sheet Supported Liquid Membranes
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Chemical Engineering Science. - : Elsevier. - 0009-2509 .- 1873-4405. ; 191, s. 134-155
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Separation selectivity of the mixture Yttrium-Neodymium-Dysprosium using Bis (2-ethylhexyl) hydrogen phosphate (D2EHPA) as extractant in a flat sheet supported liquid membrane was studied by simulations. A new definition of selectivity and a diffusional-kinetic transient model were used in the calculations. Resistance distribution between the phases, stripping phase pH, extractant concentration and initial feed concentration have great influence on selectivity and process time and their appropriate management would improve separation. The analysis of selectivity using the present model would be a useful tool to design a multistage process aimed at the separation of a multicomponent mixture of rare earth elements into its constituents.

  • Weight Gain and Liver Steatosis in Patients with Inflammatory Bowel Diseases
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Nutrients. - : MDPI AG. - 2072-6643. ; 11:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background and Aim: Most studies focused on the benefits of weight loss on hepatic steatosis and no studies have been specifically designed to assess the role of weight gain on the development of liver steatosis in patients affected by inflammatory bowel diseases. The aim of this study was to analyse the relation between weight change over time and liver steatosis in patients with inflammatory bowel diseases. Methods: We retrospectively evaluated a population of 89 ambulatory patients in clinical remission or affected by mild disease, as determined from disease activity indices, with at least one follow-up visit. Transient elastography was used to quantify liver steatosis. Results: A total of 49 individuals (55%) were overweight/obese at baseline. A significant difference in weight change was found between participants that improved, were stable and worsened, over a mean follow-up of four years. (-1.0 kg +/- 4; 2.5 kg +/- 6; and 5.4 kg +/- 5; respectively, p = 0.009). We found a greater probability of worsening in the hepatic fat content in individuals who gained more than 6% of body weight than in those gaining less than this value (log-rank (Mantel-Cox) (2) test = 9.85; df = 1; p = 0.002). Conclusions: A body weight gain of 6% increases the probability of deterioration in liver steatosis over a period of four years in patients with inflammatory bowel diseases. Weight gain prevention with lifestyle interventions may be the cornerstone treatment of these patients.

  • Condition-dependence in life history evolution
  • 2018
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Ageing is the progressive physiological deterioration that appears with increasing age and eventually leads to a decline in survival and reproduction. This physiological process is omnipresent across the tree of life, but the expected trajectory can widely vary between and within species. Classic theories predict that the evolution of senescence is strongly influenced by the level of extrinsic mortality. Furthermore, variation in early-life developmental environments can shape individual condition and thus lead to alternative life-history strategies. The interplay between early-life environment and individual condition might therefore predict the trajectory of ageing and is of importance when studying life history evolution. In this thesis, I focus on condition dependent life-history strategies and how this can translate in differential ageing patterns. Moreover, I specifically investigate the influence of early-life environment on key life history traits (i.e. survival and reproduction) and how this might eventually carry-over to future generations via nongenetic inheritance. First, I used an experimental approach involving lab populations of the nematode Caenorhabditis remanei to show that males, but not females, pay the cost for the evolution of increased lifespan (Paper I). Second, I used an empirical dataset based on 25 years of observations, to investigate the long-term effects of early-life environment on reproduction and survival (Paper II). Reproductive success of low-condition females in natural populations of collared flycatchers (Ficedula albicollis) peaks later in life, when high-condition females are already in steep reproductive decline and suffer from high mortality rates. Third, I used the neriid fly Telostylinus angusticollis in an experimental environment, to test whether condition-dependent investment in secondary sexual traits affects the life-history strategies of males (Paper III). High-condition males developed and aged faster than low-condition males, but interaction with rival males did not affect male reproductive ageing. Finally, continuing the T. angusticollis experiment, I also found that parental diet interacts with parental sex and offspring sex, ultimately affecting offspring life-histories. Parental effects can thus play an important role in shaping between-individual variation in reproductive and actuarial senescence (Paper IV). Overall, in this thesis I have explored the interaction between environment, condition and ageing in both experimental and natural settings.

  • Response of Fuel Subsidy Removal as Sustainable Transport Policy : Case Study: Workers in Jakarta Metropolitan Area
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of the Civil Engineering Forum. - : Universitas Gadjah Mada. - 2581-1037 .- 2549-5925 .- 2089-5631. ; 2:2, s. 167-174
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Motorization in urban areas contributes several problems such as congestion, accidents, gas emissions, noises, and infrastructure breakage. Meanwhile, most of the developing countries cannot overcome such growth activities, as well as in Jakarta. By December 2013, Vice Governor of Jakarta proposes fuel subsidy removal policy as one of sustainable transport policy. This study is intended to understand and investigate how fuel subsidy removal policy scenarios (25%, 50%, and 100%) in Jakarta affects travelers’ behavior and analyze such policy to support sustainable transport by using qualitative research methodology. Interviews and questionnaires survey is conducted to workers in Jakarta, which includes ranking scale question for traveler response options. The result shows that half of the respondents are not affected and will only respond to fuel price increasing at IDR 31,400 for gasoline price and IDR 26,300 for ADO (Auto Diesel Oil). Moreover, there is a tendency of respondent's to the response by changing their travel mode choices into more fuel efficient private vehicle.

  • Detection and quantification of cracks in concrete bridges using drone-image inspection
  • 2024
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The assessment of civil infrastructure plays an important role in ensuring the safety of the general public and the durability of structures. Traditional inspection methods often involve manual labour and subjective evaluations, resulting in limitations in efficiency and accuracy. In recent years, there has been an increasing interest on using advanced technologies, such as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), image analysis and machine learning techniques, to establish them as alternatives for the inspection process. These techniques provide different advantages compared with the manual method in terms of time, objectivity, and safety. The results of these techniques can allow the engineers in charge of the assessment and maintenance planning to obtain detailed results that can improve their efficiency but they are not without challenges. This research project aims to evaluate different methods used for damage detection and quantification and their integration with UAVs as an alternative to structural inspections. The proposed methodology combines image analysis techniques, Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) with drones to address the different aspects of inspections, from the data gathering to the damage detection and quantification. This methodology focuses on detecting and quantifying small cracks as narrow as 0.1 mm on concrete structures, aiming to achieve results comparable to those of traditional inspection. Furthermore, an application demonstrating the feasibility of the methodology in inside environments is also presented, focusing on the inspection of the internal section of a box girder bridge, including the creation of 3Dphotogrammetrical models to improve the inspection process. The results of the thesis highlight the methodology’s capabilities in detecting small cracks with a high probability and the possibility to use it for inside inspections without ideal conditions. This demonstrates the potential of integrating the different methods to transform structural inspections toward more efficient methodologies. Furthermore, the analysis of the results evaluates the drawbacks encountered and outlines future research directions aimed at advancing image-based inspections and their practical application.

  • FACT : An Open-Label Randomized Phase III Study of Fulvestrant and Anastrozole in Combination Compared With Anastrozole Alone as First-Line Therapy for Patients With Receptor-Positive Postmenopausal Breast Cancer
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of Clinical Oncology. - Alexandria, VA : American Society of Clinical Oncology. - 0732-183X .- 1527-7755. ; 30:16, s. 1919-1925
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: To compare the effect of therapy with anastrozole versus a combination of fulvestrant and anastrozole in women in first relapse of endocrine-responsive breast cancer. Patients and Methods: Postmenopausal women, or premenopausal women receiving a gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist, with estrogen receptor– and/or progesterone receptor–positive disease at first relapse after primary treatment of localized disease were open-label randomly assigned to a fulvestrant loading dose (LD) regimen followed by monthly injection plus 1 mg of anastrozole daily or to 1 mg of anastrozole daily alone. The primary end point was time to progression (TTP). Results: In all, 514 women were randomly assigned to fulvestrant plus anastrozole (experimental arm; n = 258) or anastrozole (standard arm; n = 256). Approximately two thirds had received adjuvant antiestrogens, but only eight individuals had received an aromatase inhibitor. Median TTP was 10.8 and 10.2 months in the experimental versus standard arm, respectively (hazard ratio [HR] = 0.99; 95% CI, 0.81 to 1.20; P = .91); median overall survival was 37.8 and 38.2 months, respectively (HR = 1.0; 95% CI, 0.76 to 1.32; P = 1.00). Incidences of prespecified adverse events (AEs) were similar. Hot flashes were more common in the experimental arm: 63 patients (24.6%) versus 35 patients (13.8%) in the standard arm (P = .0023). Death owing to AEs was reported in 11 (4.3%) and five patients (2.0%) in the experimental versus standard arm, respectively. Conclusion: Fulvestrant (250 mg + LD regimen) in combination with anastrozole offered no clinical efficacy advantage over anastrozole monotherapy in this population of individuals with a relatively high proportion of previous adjuvant antiestrogen exposure.

  • Toward Automated Testing of Geo-Distributed Replica Selection Algorithms
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Computer communication review. - : Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). - 0146-4833 .- 1943-5819. ; 45:4, s. 89-90
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Many geo-distributed systems rely on a replica selection algorithms to communicate with the closest set of replicas. Unfortunately, the bursty nature of the Internet traffic and ever changing network conditions present a problem in identifying the best choices of replicas. Suboptimal replica choices result in increased response latency and reduced system performance. In this work we present GeoPerf, a tool that tries to automate testing of geo-distributed replica selection algorithms. We used GeoPerf to test Cassandra and MongoDB, two popular data stores, and found bugs in each of these systems.

  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Physics of metals and metallography. - 0031-918X .- 1555-6190. ; 113:9, s. 831-835
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A first-principles stuy of ordering phenomena in hcp interstitial solid solutions of oxygen and nitrogen in Ti, Zr and Hf has demonstrated that the dominant contributions to the interaction energy of interstitial atoms are of chemical nature; thus, it is necessary to modify the previously established concepts about the priority role of deformational interactions in interstitial solutions. We have continued studies of the role of chemical and deformational interactions of interstitial atoms by the example of solid solutions of carbon in nickel. The results obtained also confirm a significant role of chemical interactions between carbon atoms in these solid solutions. The results were compared with the experimental data on the enthalpy of carbon dissolution in nickel and on the coefficient of solutal expansion of the lattice.

  • Southern Ocean Solar Reflection Biases in CMIP6 Models Linked to Cloud Phase and Vertical Structure Representations
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Geophysical Research Letters. - 0094-8276 .- 1944-8007. ; 49:22
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Over the Southern Ocean (SO, 40°S–70°S), climate models have consistently underestimated solar reflection. Here we evaluate the relationship between cloud profiles, cloud phase and radiation over the SO in Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) models against Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System and Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observations. We find that the lack of solar reflection is slightly improved in CMIP6 models compared to CMIP5's, attributable to a better representation of cloud fraction and phase. We show that clouds have a different vertical structure and radiative effect south and north of where the 0°C isotherm meets the surface (∼55°S). Although the models capture the greater vertical extent of clouds south of 55°S, they fail to reproduce the observed increase in solar reflection, which we pinpoint to cloud phase biases. Increasing CMIP6 supercooled liquid cloud opacity should help reduce their persistent shortwave biases.

  • Harnessing Muscle-Liver Crosstalk to Treat Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Endocrinology. - : Frontiers Media S.A.. - 1664-2392. ; 11
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has reached epidemic proportions, affecting an estimated one-quarter of the worlds adult population. Multiple organ systems have been implicated in the pathophysiology of NAFLD; however, the role of skeletal muscle has until recently been largely overlooked. A growing body of evidence places skeletal muscle-via its impact on insulin resistance and systemic inflammation-and the muscle-liver axis at the center of the NAFLD pathogenic cascade. Population-based studies suggest that sarcopenia is an effect-modifier across the NAFLD spectrum in that it is tightly linked to an increased risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver, non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), and advanced liver fibrosis, all independent of obesity and insulin resistance. Longitudinal studies suggest that increases in skeletal muscle mass over time may both reduce the incidence of NAFLD and improve preexisting NAFLD. Adverse muscle composition, comprising both low muscle volume and high muscle fat infiltration (myosteatosis), is highly prevalent in patients with NAFLD. The risk of functional disability conferred by low muscle volume in NAFLD is further exacerbated by the presence of myosteatosis, which is twice as common in NAFLD as in other chronic liver diseases. Crosstalk between muscle and liver is influenced by several factors, including obesity, physical inactivity, ectopic fat deposition, oxidative stress, and proinflammatory mediators. In this perspective review, we discuss key pathophysiological processes driving sarcopenia in NAFLD: anabolic resistance, insulin resistance, metabolic inflexibility and systemic inflammation. Interventions that modify muscle quantity (mass), muscle quality (fat), and physical function by simultaneously engaging multiple targets and pathways implicated in muscle-liver crosstalk may be required to address the multifactorial pathogenesis of NAFLD/NASH and provide effective and durable therapies.

  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Fuel Processing Technology. - : Elsevier. - 0378-3820. ; 92:3, s. 349-355
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The effects of proximate, ultimate and elemental analysis for a wide range of American coal samples on Free-swelling Index (FSI) have been investigated by multivariable regression and artificial neural network methods (ANN). The stepwise least square mathematical method shows that variables of ultimate analysis are better predictors than those from proximate analysis. The non linear multivariable regression, correlation coefficients (R2) from ultimate analysis inputs was 0.71, and for proximate analysis input variables was 0.49. With the same input sets, feed-forward artificial neural network (FANN) procedures improved accuracy of predicted FSI with R2 = 0.89, and 0.94 for proximate and ultimate analyses, respectively. The ANN based prediction method, as a first report, shows FSI is a predictable variable, and ANN can be further employed as a reliable and accurate method in the free-swelling index prediction.

  • Insights into the Cyanobacterial Deg/HtrA Proteases
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Plant Science. - : Frontiers Media S.A. - 1664-462X. ; 7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Proteins are the main machinery for all living processes in a cell; they provide structural elements, regulate biochemical reactions as enzymes, and are the interface to the outside as receptors and transporters. Like any other machinery proteins have to be assembled correctly and need maintenance after damage, e.g., caused by changes in environmental conditions, genetic mutations, and limitations in the availability of cofactors. Proteases and chaperones help in repair, assembly, and folding of damaged and misfolded protein complexes cost-effective, with low energy investment compared with neo-synthesis. Despite their importance for viability, the specific biological role of most proteases in vivo is largely unknown. Deg/HtrA proteases, a family of serinetype ATP-independent proteases, have been shown in higher plants to be involved in the degradation of the Photosystem II reaction center protein D1. The objective of this review is to highlight the structure and function of their cyanobacterial orthologs. Homology modeling was used to find specific features of the SynDeg/HtrA proteases of Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803. Based on the available data concerning their location and their physiological substrates we conclude that these Deg proteases not only have important housekeeping and chaperone functions within the cell, but also are needed for remodeling the cell exterior.

  • Implications of variation of epinephrine auto-injector needle length
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Annals of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology. - : ELSEVIER SCIENCE INC. - 1081-1206 .- 1534-4436. ; 123:1, s. 89-94
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: The variation of needle lengths of epinephrine auto-injectors (EAIs) has not been investigated. Objective: To investigate the impact of the variation of the needle length of EAIs. Methods: Skin-to-muscle (STMD) and skin-to-bone distances (STBD) were measured for 303 children and adolescents and 99 adults. Distance was determined by ultrasound, applying high or low pressure on the probe. The risk of subcutaneous and periosteal/intraosseous injection was calculated using the lower and upper acceptance limits for length of EAI needles as provided for 3 high-pressure EAIs (HPEAI) and 1 low-pressure EAI (LPEAI). Results: The variation in needle length of the HPEAIs are for Epipen Jr/Epipen 5 mm, for Jext 2 mm, for Auvi-Q 2.5 mm, and for the LPEAI, Emerade, 1.5 mm. When using the longest acceptable needles for Epipen Jr, the risk of intraosseous/periosteal penetration was highest in children weighing less than 15 kg at 60% and for Jext at 43%. The risk was low for Auvi-Q and Emerade. The risk of subcutaneous injection was greatest with the shortest needles of the Auvi-Q 0.1 mg at 94% in children weighing less than 15 kg. In adults, the risk of subcutaneous injection using the shortest needles was for Epi-Pen at 41%, Jext at 36%, Auvi-Q at 38%, and Emerade at 12%. Conclusion: The variation in needle length of EAIs influences the risk of subcutaneous and intraosseous/periosteal injections. Compared with Epipen Jr, the Auvi-Q 0.1 mg for children weighing less than 15 kg had a low risk of intraosseous/periosteal injection but a very high risk of subcutaneous injection. For adults, there is a significant risk of subcutaneous injection. (C) 2019 Published by Elsevier Inc. on behalf of American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology.

  • Ingår i: Design automation for embedded systems. - Springer : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0929-5585 .- 1572-8080. ; 20, s. 211-238
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We focus here on the application of multi critera decision analysis (MCDA) techniques in hardware/software partitioning activities to be used in the design and deployment of embedded systems. Our goal is to identify the best existing methods and tools suitable to support the approach we have taken for the partitioning process. We provide this via a survey of the most well-known MCDA methods and tools (for a specific class of MCDA methods called multi attribute decision making. We identify a set of criteria that need to be addressed, in some way, by the methods, and implemented by related tools. These "11-suitability criteria" help us in deciding the appropriateness of the analysed methods and tools for the envisaged partitioning approach. In brief, we are interested that the MCDA methods are taking into account multiple extra-functional properties, expressed by a variety of types, with possible missing values, should enable dependency handling, decision traceability, etc. The conclusion is that there are criteria that are not fulfilled by any of the methods, and hence there is no method or tool that can directly used for the partitioning. However, the results shows the potential of using MCDA in the partitioning process and provide a good starting point for future research activities.

  • Cerebrospinal fluid neurofilament light chain predicts disease activity after the first demyelinating event suggestive of multiple sclerosis
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Multiple Sclerosis and Related Disorders. - : Elsevier BV. - 2211-0348 .- 2211-0356. ; 35, s. 228-232
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: The prediction of disease activity in patients with a first demyelinating event suggestive of multiple sclerosis (MS) is of high clinical relevance. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) neurofilament light chain (NfL) has shown to have prognostic value in MS patients. In this work, we measured CSF NfL in patients at the first demyelinating event in order to find a cut-off value able to discriminate patients who will have disease activity from those who will remain stable during the follow-up. Methods: We included CSF samples collected within 30 days after the onset of the first demyelinating event from 32 patients followed-up for 3.8 ± 2.5 years. CSF NfL was measured with a newly developed in-house enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Results: At the first demyelinating event, patients with subsequent disease activity had significantly higher baseline CSF NfL values compared to clinically and radiologically stable patients (median 812.5 pg/mL, range 205–2359 pg/mL vs 329.5 pg/mL, range 156–3492 pg/mL, p = 0.002). A CSF NfL cut-off value of 500 pg/mL significantly discriminated these two groups of patients with a 90% sensitivity and an 83.3% specificity. Conclusion: Our results confirm that CSF NfL is a prognostic marker in the very early phases of MS. The validation of a cut-off value of 500 pg/mL could provide clinicians with a dichotomous variable that can simplify the prognostic assessment of patients at the first demyelinating event.

  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - 1094-4087. ; 17:18, s. 16291-16299
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A novel technique for studying photon propagation in scattering media is proposed and demonstrated, as is believed, for the first time. Photons propagating through the medium, from a frequency-ramped single-mode diode laser, meet a reference beam from the same source, at a common detector, and beat frequencies corresponding to various temporal delays are observed by heterodyne techniques. Fourier transformation directly yields the temporal dispersion curve. Proof-of-principle experiments on polystyrene foam and a tissue phantom suggest, that the new method, when fully developed, may favorably compete with the more complex time-correlated single-photon counting (TCSPC) and the phase-shift methods, now much employed.

  • Low agreement between fresh and frozen-thawed platelet-rich plasma in the calibrated automated thrombogram assay
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Haemophilia. - : Wiley. - 1351-8216. ; 23:3, s. 214-218
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introduction: Thrombin generation tests (TGTs) are considered to give more detailed information of the overall coagulation capability of a patient than clotting-based routine assays. The TGT thrombin generation assay-calibrated automated thrombogram (TGA-CAT) uses both platelet-poor plasma (PPP) and platelet-rich plasma (PRP). Assessing PRP gives more physiological test conditions and is of great interest considering the important role platelets play in haemostasis. However, PRP needs to be assessed close after blood draw/preparation as freezing fragments the platelets. In several previous publications, the utility of frozen-thawed PRP (ft-PRP) has been promoted, and in one article, no significant difference between fresh PRP (f-PRP) and ft-PRP was reported. Aim: The aim of our study was to investigate the level of agreement between f-PRP and ft-PRP to further validate these results. Methods: Our test population contained 41 persons with haemophilia and 45 healthy subjects. We used the TGA-CAT method with a set-up according to the manufacturer of the method. Results: The measurements showed a poor level of agreement between f-PRP and ft-PRP and differences were not systematic. Conclusion: Fresh and ft-PRP cannot be assumed to show equal results in the TGA-CAT assay.

  • Ingår i: Journal of Small Business and Enterprise Development. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 1462-6004 .- 1758-7840. ; 27:1, s. 85-102
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to understand the change of the founder’s psychological ownershipwhen s/he sells the business and its implications for the organization’s strategy.Design/methodology/approach – The study contributes with a longitudinal study of psychologicalownership, accounting for its development over time in a Swedish e-commerce company. By applying a casestudy methodology, conclusions are drawn from a vast amount of archival data and interviews. The empiricalmaterial covers the transition from a founder-run, family-owned to a first foreign-owned, and currentlyprivate-equity owned company.Findings – Theoretically, it extends understandings of psychological ownership and its strategicimplications by including former legal owners; that is, how psychological ownership changes after legalownership ceases. Thereby, it develops the individual dimension (founder and former owner) of psychologicalownership as well as its collective dimension (employees toward founder). The paper contributes to thepsychological ownership founder and exit-literatures by highlighting continuity after the formal sale of legalownership and its consequences for the organization.Practical implications – It finds that new legal owners can use this heritage to signal continuity andlaunch strategic changes by transforming it into artifacts.Originality/value – This study extends the understanding of development of psychological ownership offounders from foundation to exit and its consequences for the organization’s strategy. This extension shedsnew light on founders as artifacts of organizations and thereby their role for the organizational heritage.

  • A Bilingual Treebank for the FraCaS Test Suite
  • 2011
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • We have created a bilingual treebank for 99% of the sentences in the FraCaS test suite. The treebank is built together with an associated bilingual English-Swedish lexicon written in the Grammatical Framework Resource Grammar. The original FraCaS sentences are English, and we have tested the multilinguality of the Resource Grammar by analysing the grammaticality and naturalness of the Swedish translations. 86% of the sentences are grammatically and semantically correct and sound natural. About 10% can probably be fixed by adding new lexical items or grammatical rules, and only a small amount are considered to be difficult to cure.

  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Robotics Research. - Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer. - 9783642194566 - 9783642194573 ; , s. 123-138
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We propose a constructive control design for stabilization of non-periodic trajectories of underactuated mechanical systems. An important example of such a system is an underactuated "dynamic walking" biped robot walking over rough terrain. The proposed technique is to compute a transverse linearization about the desired motion: a linear impulsive system which locally represents dynamics about a target trajectory. This system is then exponentially stabilized using a modified receding-horizon control design. The proposed method is experimentally verified using a compass-gait walker: a two-degree-of-freedom biped with hip actuation but pointed stilt-like feet. The technique is, however, very general and can be applied to higher degree-of-freedom robots over arbitrary terrain and other impulsive mechanical systems.

  • Planning for the sustainability of freight and logistics: Strategic guiding principles for regional policy
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: EUROPEAN JOURNAL OF TRANSPORT AND INFRASTRUCTURE RESEARCH. - 1567-7133 .- 1567-7141. ; 23:3, s. 30-47
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Policy-makers face challenges managing the movement of goods while responding to increasingly urgent sustainability problems. Freight policy is fragmented over many regulatory fields, often with ambiguous or contested objectives. Empirical freight transport research can be difficult to translate directly into policy settings, and policy measures often have substantial unintended consequences, especially over long time periods. These foundational challenges can make effective policy implementation difficult. Through a review of the literature, and drawing on diverse applied research and practice experiences, we categorise intertemporal problems in designing regional freight policy, and identify principles for informing practical policy synthesis. These principles provide a framework for decision-makers who formulate policy, and for researchers who critically evaluate it. Adoption and refinement of these principles will improve the translation of research into policy through time, recognising the inherently complex and uncertain nature of planning for the movement of goods.

  • Ingår i: Journal of Pediatrics. - : Elsevier BV. - 1097-6833 .- 0022-3476. ; 151:5, s. 494-499
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objectives We have previously reported an increased cardiac workload in newborn preterm small (SGA) infants, but not in infants appropriate for gestational age (AGA). We hypothesized that these cardiovascular changes win persist at follow-tip at 5 years of age. Study design We assessed blood pressure, echocardiography, and shin perfusion with laser Doppler flowmetry in 22 SGA (S21 +/- 248 g. 28.5 +/- 2:5 gestational weeks) and in 25 AGA (1065 +/- 241 g, 27.6 +/- 0.8 weeks) preterm children at age 5 years. Laser Doppler flowmetry also was used in 13 control children (3982 +/- 425 g, 40.4 +/- 1.8 weeks). Results The preterm children in both the SGA and AGA groups had similar higher systolic blood pressures, increased interventricular septum thicknesses, and smaller left ventricular end-diastolic diameters compared with population reference values. Maximal endothelium-independent perfusion to sodium nitroprusside was higher and maximal endothelium-dependent perfusion to acetylcholine reached a plateau earlier in the AGA preterm group than in the control group. Conclusions Prematurity may, impair cardiovascular function independently of intrauterine growth restriction. Altered cardiac dimensions and differences in perfusion responses may reflect increased cardiac afterload.

  • Minimal residual disease status is the prognostic determinant following high-dose treatment for patients with multiple myeloma
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Cancer Medicine. - : WILEY. - 2045-7634. ; 12:22, s. 20736-20744
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: The presence of minimal residual disease (MRD+) following autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT) in multiple myeloma represents a poor prognostic factor for progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS).Methods: At our department, we recommend lenalidomide maintenance for patients who are MRD+ after ASCT, while MRD-negative (MRD-) patients, after information about the national guidelines, were not advised to follow this regimen. Results: Out of the total 228 patients, 175 received ASCT following first-line induction (MRD- 92 (53%), MRD+ 83 (47%), at 2 months post-ASCT), while 53 underwent ASCT after second-line treatment (MRD- 27 (51%), MRD+ 26 (49%), at the same time point). Comparatively, MRD- patients who did not receive maintenance demonstrated better OS than MRD+ patients who received upfront ASCT and maintenance treatment (96% vs. 86%, p = 0.030, at 3 years). However, nonsignificant difference was found in PFS (76% vs. 62%, at 3 years). Furthermore, second-line ASCT, MRD- non-maintained patients exhibited significantly better PFS than MRD+ (71% vs. 27%, p > 0.001, at 3 years). However, OS was better but nonsignificant (96% vs. 76%, at 3 years). Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) analysis was performed on 141 out of the 228 patients. Of these, 85 (60%) patients were deemed standard risk (SR), and 56 (40%) were classified as high risk (HR). In the SR cohort, MRD- patients exhibited better PFS and OS than MRD+ patients (71% vs. 59% and 100% vs. 85%, respectively). In the HR cohort, the MRD- patients showed superior PFS but similar OS compared to MRD+ patients (66% vs. 42% and 81% vs. 80%, respectively). Conclusions: Our results indicate that being MRD- is a more crucial prognostic factor for the 3-year PFS and OS than the presence of high-risk cytogenetic markers or undergoing maintenance treatment. The latter appears insufficient, particularly for MRD+ patients following ASCT in the second-line setting, suggesting that these patients may require a more intensive treatment approach.

  • A Monovoltage Equivalent Model of Bi-Voltage Autotransformer-Based Electrical Systems in Railways
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery. - 0885-8977 .- 1937-4208. ; 27:2, s. 699-708
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents an equivalent model that allows representing bi-voltage autotransformer- based systems (such as 2 x 25 kV ac, 2 x 15 kV ac) as if they were monovoltage systems. This model can be used for symmetrical (such as 2 x25-kV 50-Hz systems) and unsymmetrical (such as 12/24-kV 25-Hz systems) configurations. It is based on two simplifying hypotheses that establish relationships between currents and voltages in the positive and negative phases. These hypotheses are discussed and the accuracy of the model is evaluated by comparing the results with a detailed conventional model of power-supply systems.

  • 2017
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Public Health. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 1101-1262 .- 1464-360X. ; 27:Suppl. 3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BackgroundSibling loss has received scant attention in the bereavement literature. A previous study suggested an overall increased risk of mortality in siblings bereaved during childhood. However, the underlying disease pattern behind increased mortality is unclear. We studied the influence of sibling loss during childhood on in and outpatient care with an underlying psychiatric diagnosis in adulthood.MethodsA national cohort born in Sweden in 1973-1982 (N = 717,723) was followed prospectively in the Cause of Death Register until 2013, i.e. from ages 18 years to 31-40 years of age. Cox proportional hazards models were used to analyse the association between sibling loss during childhood and psychiatric in- and outpatient care during follow-up.ResultsAfter adjustment for socio-demographic confounders and parental psychosocial covariates, HR for psychiatric inpatient-and outpatient care in bereaved siblings versus non- bereaved siblings was fairly small and non-significant in women. Bereaved men had increased HR for both psychiatric inpatient- (HR 1.17, 95% CI 1.00-1.36) and outpatient care (HR 1.21, 95% CI 1.10-1.33). Risks were however more pronounced when exposed to loss of a sibling in adolescence (i.e. in the ages 12-18 years) in both men and women.ConclusionsThe death of a sibling in childhood was associated with slightly increased risk of psychiatric in and out-patient care in surviving siblings in adulthood in men but not in women. Individuals experiencing the loss of a sibling in childhood may need particular attention from health care services.

  • Cross-plane thermal conductivity of (Ti,W)N/(Al,Sc)N metal/semiconductor superlattices
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. - : AMER PHYSICAL SOC. - 2469-9950 .- 2469-9969. ; 93:4, s. 045311-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Reduction of cross-plane thermal conductivity and understanding of the mechanisms of heat transport in nanostructured metal/semiconductor superlattices are crucial for their potential applications in thermoelectric and thermionic energy conversion devices, thermal management systems, and thermal barrier coatings. We have developed epitaxial (Ti,W)N/(Al,Sc)N metal/semiconductor superlattices with periodicity ranging from 1 nm to 240 nm that show significantly lower thermal conductivity compared to the parent TiN/(Al, Sc) N superlattice system. The (Ti,W)N/(Al,Sc)N superlattices grow with [001] orientation on the MgO(001) substrates with well-defined coherent layers and are nominally single crystalline with low densities of extended defects. Cross-plane thermal conductivity (measured by time-domain thermoreflectance) decreases with an increase in the superlattice interface density in a manner that is consistent with incoherent phonon boundary scattering. Thermal conductivity values saturate at 1.7W m(-1) K-1 for short superlattice periods possibly due to a delicate balance between long-wavelength coherent phonon modes and incoherent phonon scattering from heavy tungsten atomic sites and superlattice interfaces. First-principles density functional perturbation theory based calculations are performed to model the vibrational spectrum of the individual component materials, and transport models are used to explain the interface thermal conductance across the (Ti,W)N/(Al,Sc)N interfaces as a function of periodicity. The long-wavelength coherent phonon modes are expected to play a dominant role in the thermal transport properties of the short-period superlattices. Our analysis of the thermal transport properties of (Ti,W)N/(Al,Sc)N metal/semiconductor superlattices addresses fundamental questions about heat transport in multilayer materials.

  • Ethnographic research on children’s literacy practices: children’s literacy experiences and possibilities for representation
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Ethnography and Education. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1745-7823 .- 1745-7831. ; 15:1, s. 48-63
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper draws on a longitudinal ethnography of nine children’s use of texts in and out of school in a multilingual setting in Sweden. The aim of this contribution is to reflect on the ways in which four out of these nine children are able to represent their literacies in school and in that way also represent their experiences and identities. The analysis highlights the importance of ethnographic approaches through which literacies can be studied from children’s perspectives rather than using predefined and technical definitions. Drawing on the results, I argue that studies of children’s literacy practices have to be related to children’s positions and to power structures within society and its institutions. The crucial goal in this is to avoid deficit discourses, to challenge narrow classroom discourses and to sustain democracy in diverse societies.

  • Deregulation of STAT-5 isoforms in the development of HPV-mediated cervical carcinogenesis
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of Receptor and Signal Transduction Research. - : Informa Healthcare. - 1079-9893 .- 1532-4281. ; 30:3, s. 178-188
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer and is leading cause of cancer related deaths in women worldwide. High Risk-Human papillomavirus (HPV) types play an important role in cervical carcinogenesis. Considering the important role of signal transducer and activator of transcription-5 (STAT-5), an important member of JAK/STAT family which plays a crucial role in various cancers and HPV as a key mediator in the development of cervical carcinogenesis, the purpose of the current study was to examine the possible relationship between HPV infection and expression of STAT-5 gene isoforms in cervical cancer.METHODS: A total of 120 fresh cervical tissue specimens comprising precancer (n = 12), cancer (n = 78) and normal controls (n = 30) were analyzed for HPV infection and expression pattern of STAT-5 mRNA (both isoforms STAT-5a and STAT-5b) and protein in different stages of cervical carcinoma biopsies by reverse-transcriptase-PCR, western blotting and immunohistochemistry.RESULTS: A significantly increased expression of STAT-5 was detected in most of the cervical tumors (P < 0.001), whereas it was almost undetectable in normal controls. Also the study of relative contribution of STAT-5 isoforms revealed a higher expression pattern of STAT-5b and was associated with severity of the disease. On the contrary, STAT-5a was found to be significantly downregulated in cervical tumor tissues (P < 0.001). HPV infection was found in 90% of the cervical cancer cases and was significantly associated with STAT-5 overexpression (P = 0.001).CONCLUSIONS: We observed for the first time the differential expression pattern of STAT-5 isoforms in cervical cancer and that STAT-5 may play an important role in the progression of HPV-mediated cervical cancer.
