  • A polarized fast radio burst at low Galactic latitude
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Monthly notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. - : Oxford Academic. - 0035-8711 .- 1365-2966. ; 469:4, s. 4465-4482
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on the discovery of a new fast radio burst (FRB), FRB 150215, with the Parkes radio telescope on 2015 February 15. The burst was detected in real time with a dispersion measure (DM) of 1105.6 +/- 0.8 pc cm(-3), a pulse duration of 2.8(-0.5)(+1.2) ms, and a measured peak flux density assuming that the burst was at beam centre of 0.7(-0.1)(+0.2) Jy. The FRB originated at a Galactic longitude and latitude of 24.66 degrees, 5.28 degrees and 25 degrees away from the Galactic Center. The burst was found to be 43 +/- 5 per cent linearly polarized with a rotation measure (RM) in the range -9 < RM < 12 rad m(-2) (95 per cent confidence level), consistent with zero. The burst was followed up with 11 telescopes to search for radio, optical, X-ray, gamma-ray and neutrino emission. Neither transient nor variable emission was found to be associated with the burst and no repeat pulses have been observed in 17.25 h of observing. The sightline to the burst is close to the Galactic plane and the observed physical properties of FRB 150215 demonstrate the existence of sight lines of anomalously low RM for a given electron column density. The Galactic RM foreground may approach a null value due to magnetic field reversals along the line of sight, a decreased total electron column density from the Milky Way, or some combination of these effects. A lower Galactic DM contribution might explain why this burst was detectable whereas previous searches at low latitude have had lower detection rates than those out of the plane.

  • The First Combined Search For Neutrino Point-Sources In The Southern Hemisphere With The Antares And Icecube Neutrino Telescopes
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - 0004-637X .- 1538-4357. ; 823:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present the results of searches for point-like sources of neutrinos based on the first combined analysis of data from both the ANTARES and IceCube neutrino telescopes. The combination of both detectors, which differ in size and location, forms a window in the southern sky where the sensitivity to point sources improves by up to a factor of 2 compared with individual analyses. Using data recorded by ANTARES from 2007 to 2012, and by IceCube from 2008 to 2011, we search for sources of neutrino emission both across the southern sky and from a preselected list of candidate objects. No significant excess over background has been found in these searches, and flux upper limits for the candidate sources are presented for E-2.5 and E-2 power-law spectra with different energy cut-offs.

  • Substituent and Solvent Effects on the UV–vis Absorption Spectrum of the Photoactive Yellow Protein Chromophore
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physical Chemistry A. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1089-5639 .- 1520-5215. ; 119:21, s. 5504-5514
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Solvent effects on the UV–vis absorption spectra and molecular properties of four models of the photoactive yellow protein (PYP) chromophore have been studied with ASEP/MD, a sequential quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics method. The anionic trans-p-coumaric acid (pCA–), thioacid (pCTA–), methyl ester (pCMe–), and methyl thioester (pCTMe–) derivatives have been studied in gas phase and in water solution. We analyze the modifications introduced by the substitution of sulfur by oxygen atoms and hydrogen by methyl in the coumaryl tail. We have found some differences in the absorption spectra of oxy and thio derivatives that could shed light on the different photoisomerization paths followed by these compounds. In solution, the spectrum substantially changes with respect to that obtained in the gas phase. The n → π1* state is destabilized by a polar solvent like water, and it becomes the third excited state in solution displaying an important blue shift. Now, the π → π1* and π → π2* states mix, and we find contributions from both transitions in S1 and S2. The presence of the sulfur atom modulates the solvent effect and the first two excited states become practically degenerate for pCA– and pCMe– but moderately well-separated for pCTA– and pCTMe–.

  • QM/MM Study of Substituent and Solvent Effects on the Excited State Dynamics of the Photoactive Yellow Protein Chromophore
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Chemical Theory and Computation. - : AMER CHEMICAL SOC. - 1549-9618 .- 1549-9626. ; 13:2, s. 737-748
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Substituent and solvent effects on the excited state dynamics of the Photoactive Yellow Protein chromophore are studied using the average solvent electrostatic potential from molecular dynamics (ASEP/MD) method. Four molecular models were considered: the ester and thioester derivatives of the p-coumaric acid anion and their methylated derivatives. We found that the solvent produces dramatic modifications on the free energy profile of the S1 state: 1) Two twisted structures that are minima in the gas phase could not be located in aqueous solution. 2) Conical intersections (CIs) associated with the rotation of the single bond adjacent to the phenyl group are found for the four derivatives in water solution but only for thio derivatives in the gas phase. 3) The relative stability of minima and CIs is reverted with respect to the gas phase values, affecting the prevalent de-excitation paths. As a consequence of these changes, three competitive de-excitation channels are open in aqueous solution: the fluorescence emission from a planar minimum on S1, the transcis photoisomerization through a CI that involves the rotation of the vinyl double bond, and the nonradiative, nonreactive, de-excitation through the CI associated with the rotation of the single bond adjacent to the phenyl group. In the gas phase, the minima are the structures with the lower energy, while in solution these are the conical intersections. In solution, the de-excitation prevalent path seems to be the photoisomerization for oxo compounds, while thio compounds return to the initial trans ground state without emission.

  • Face morphogenesis is promoted by Pbx-dependent EMT via regulation of Snail1 during frontonasal prominence fusion
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Development (Cambridge, England). - : The Company of Biologists. - 1477-9129 .- 0950-1991. ; 145:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Human cleft lip with or without cleft palate (CL/P) is a common craniofacial abnormality caused by impaired fusion of the facial prominences. We have previously reported that in the mouse embryo epithelial apoptosis mediates fusion at the seam where the prominences coalesce. Here, we show that apoptosis alone is not sufficient to remove the epithelial layers. We observed morphological changes in the seam epithelia, intermingling of cells of epithelial descent into the mesenchyme, and molecular signatures of Epithelial-Mesenchymal-Transition (EMT). Utilizing mouse lines with cephalic epithelium-specific Pbx loss exhibiting CL/P, we demonstrate that these cellular behaviors are Pbx-dependent, as is the transcriptional regulation of the EMT driver Snail1. Furthermore, in the embryo the majority of epithelial cells expressing high levels of Snail1 do not undergo apoptosis. Pbx1 loss- and gain-of-function in a tractable epithelial culture system revealed that Pbx1 is both necessary and sufficient for EMT induction. This study establishes that Pbx-dependent EMT programs mediate murine upper lip/primary palate morphogenesis and fusion via regulation of Snail1. Of note, the EMT signatures observed in the embryo are mirrored in the epithelial culture system.

  • Accelerating QM/MM Calculations by Using the Mean Field Approximation
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Quantum Modeling of Complex Molecular Systems. - Cham : Springer. - 9783319216256 - 9783319216263 ; , s. 135-152
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • It is well known that solvents can modify the frequency and intensity of the solute spectral bands, the thermodynamics and kinetics of chemical reactions, the strength of molecular interactions or the fate of solute excited states. The theoretical study of solvent effects is quite complicated since the presence of the solvent introduces additional difficulties with respect to the study of analogous problems in gas phase. The mean field approximation (MFA) is used for many of the most employed solvent effect theories as it permits to reduce the computational cost associated to the study of processes in solution. In this chapter we revise the performance of ASEP/MD, a quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics method developed in our laboratory that makes use of this approximation. It permits to combine state of the art calculations of the solute electron distribution with a detailed, microscopic, description of the solvent. As examples of application of the method we study solvent effects on the absorption spectra of some molecules involved in photoisomerization processes of biological systems.

  • Criteria for the definition of Pituitary Tumor Centers of Excellence (PTCOE): A Pituitary Society Statement
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Pituitary. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1386-341X .- 1573-7403. ; 20, s. 489-498
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • © 2017, The Author(s). Introduction: With the goal of generate uniform criteria among centers dealing with pituitary tumors and to enhance patient care, the Pituitary Society decided to generate criteria for developing Pituitary Tumors Centers of Excellence (PTCOE). Methods: To develop that task, a group of ten experts served as a Task Force and through two years of iterative work an initial draft was elaborated. This draft was discussed, modified and finally approved by the Board of Directors of the Pituitary Society. Such document was presented and debated at a specific session of the Congress of the Pituitary Society, Orlando 2017, and suggestions were incorporated. Finally the document was distributed to a large group of global experts that introduced further modifications with final endorsement. Results: After five years of iterative work a document with the ideal criteria for a PTCOE is presented. Conclusions: Acknowledging that very few centers in the world, if any, likely fulfill the requirements here presented, the document may be a tool to guide improvements of care delivery to patients with pituitary disorders. All these criteria must be accommodated to the regulations and organization of Health of a given country.

  • A new equation to estimate temperature-corrected PaCO2 from PET CO2 during exercise in normoxia and hypoxia.
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Medicine & Science in Sports. - : Wiley. - 1600-0838 .- 0905-7188. ; 26:9, s. 1045-1051
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • End-tidal PCO2 (PET CO2 ) has been used to estimate arterial pressure CO2 (Pa CO2 ). However, the influence of blood temperature on the Pa CO2 has not been taken into account. Moreover, there is no equation validated to predict Pa CO2 during exercise in severe acute hypoxia. To develop a new equation to predict temperature-corrected Pa CO2 values during exercise in normoxia and severe acute hypoxia, 11 volunteers (21.2 ± 2.1 years) performed incremental exercise to exhaustion in normoxia (Nox, PI O2 : 143 mmHg) and hypoxia (Hyp, PI O2 : 73 mmHg), while arterial blood gases and temperature (ABT) were simultaneously measured together with end-tidal PCO2 (PET CO2 ). The Jones et al. equation tended to underestimate the temperature corrected (tc) Pa CO2 during exercise in hypoxia, with greater deviation the lower the Pa CO2 tc (r = 0.39, P < 0.05). The new equation has been developed using a random-effects regression analysis model, which allows predicting Pa CO2 tc both in normoxia and hypoxia: Pa CO2 tc = 8.607 + 0.716 × PET CO2 [R(2) = 0.91; intercept SE = 1.022 (P < 0.001) and slope SE = 0.027 (P < 0.001)]. This equation may prove useful in noninvasive studies of brain hemodynamics, where an accurate estimation of Pa CO2 is needed to calculate the end-tidal-to-arterial PCO2 difference, which can be used as an index of pulmonary gas exchange efficiency.
