Sex Dolls in the Swedish Media Discourse : Intimacy, Sexuality, and Technology

- Sex dolls are a complex phenomenon with several diverse possible emotional, sexual and therapeutic uses. They can be part of a broad variety of sexual practices, and also function as a sexual aid. However, the media discourse on sex dolls first and foremost concerns how we perceive the relationship between intimacy and technology. A critical discourse analysis of the Swedish media discourse on sex dolls reveals six themes which dominate the discourse: (a) the definition of what a human being is; (b) a discourse on the (technological and existential) future; (c) a social effort; (d) a loveless phenomenon; (e) men's violence against women; and (f) pedophilia. Accordingly, this discourse is very conservative and normative in its view of sexuality, technology, and humanity. Overall, the dominant themes do not provide any space for positive effects of technology on human sexuality, and if they do, it is usually as a substitute for something else.

- Robin Hobb’s Realm of the Elderlings is a vast and sprawling epic fantasy series, consisting of four trilogies and one tetralogy, all taking place in the same world and concerning events surrounding the same part of that fantasy world’s history, namely the return of dragons to the world. Although scholars and critics have focused mainly on the queer potential of one of the series’ main protagonists, the androgynous and gender-ambivalent Beloved or the Fool, the series also very clearly function as a comment on the geological and critical concept of the Anthropocene. The usefulness and correctness of the Anthropocene, referring to the geological epoch when humans make a significant impact on the earth, is debated among both natural scientists and critical humanities scholars. Nonetheless, it has come to be used as an analytical concept for studying how the arts and popular culture reflect, comment on, critique and/or can increase awareness of the impact of human beings on nature and the climate.Hobb’s fantasy world of the Elderlings sheds light on the Anthropocene. One reason for bringing back dragons into the world is so that humans will no longer be at the top of the food chain. In addition, Hobb has created a magic ability called the Wit, giving the character endowed with it communication with animals and a connection with all living things. Focusing mainly on the second trilogy of the series, The Tawny Man, this chapter discusses how Hobbagain and again draws attention to what it means to be human in the world

- This article discusses a few points often brought up in relation to a ‘golden age of porn’, namely the issue of quality and of art versus money. Using the example of Inge Ivarson, a film producer in Sweden who, from the late 1960s and on, was a prolific producer of sexually explicit films, the article argues that his production of literary adaptations, directed by Mac Ahlberg, can be seen as a kind of quality porn.

- This article addresses border crossings in the 1970s related to sexual commerce,in particular in the small community of Hälle, located near the Sweden–Norwayborder at Svinesund and European route E6. As the legal situation with regardto pornography differed in Norway and Sweden, Swedish legislation being moreliberal, Norwegians travelled to Sweden to both buy and to consume on-sitesexually explicit material and entertainment. By choosing this perspective, thearticle shifts focus away from the sexually explicit material itself, towards thespaces in which it can be found, and reflects upon consumption of such materialas a literally transgressive, non-normative sexual behavior.

- This article addresses what happens to pornographic material during the transition from analogue to digital form. Started in Sweden in 1965, Private magazine is one of the oldest, still existing pornography companies, challenging the existing obscenity law in Sweden at the time of its first issue. Here, Private magazine and privateclassics.com function as a case study and point of departure for a discussion of materiality, nostalgia, and cultural memory, but more poignantly a changing legal context for pornography which, although called for, might also be an obstacle to research. Drawing on Whitney Strub’s idea of a ‘sanitation’ of the 1970s, a comparison of the physical issues of Private magazine and the scanned issues available (for a fee) on privateclassics.com shows that age indications in image captions in the magazine have been altered in order to concur with the legal situation of pornography today.

- Most sports science research revolves around male subjects. As a result, most of the knowledge and practices within sports are male-centric. Failing to take the biological, psychological and social (biopsychosocial) particularities of females into account is believed to hinder optimal sports participation, development and performance, with potential negative effects on the health and well-being of females. To close the knowledge gap and alleviate these issues, we aim to develop and evaluate a 12-video educational intervention that addresses female-specific subject matter: the FIDES Athlete Development Programme. The study is designed as an embedded multiple case study where at least 1320 Swedish female athletes aged 13-16 will participate, in addition to their parents and their coaches. The girls will be recruited through their sports clubs, with half being exposed to the FIDES Athlete Development Programme and the other half serving as control cases. The primary outcomes are well-being and sporting experience. To further increase our understanding of the intervention and its implications, interviews and focus group interviews with a reference group of girls and focus group interviews with a randomly selected subsample of coaches and parents will also be performed. The project is approved by the Swedish ethics committee (number: 2023-05264-01) and will be carried out in compliance with the Declaration of Helsinki. Results from the project will be published open access in peer-reviewed journals, at national and international conferences, in mass media, and a PhD thesis. The anonymised data will be made openly available in a data repository.
