  • The Great Dun Fell experiment 1995 : An overview
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Atmospheric Research. - 0169-8095. ; 50:3-4, s. 151-184
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • During March and April of 1995 a major international field project was conducted at the UMIST field station site on Great Dun Fell in Cumbria, Northern England. The hill cap cloud which frequently envelopes this site was used as a natural flow through reactor to examine the sensitivity of the cloud microphysics to the aerosol entering the cloud and also to investigate the effects of the cloud in changing the aerosol size distribution, chemical composition and associated optical properties. To investigate these processes, detailed measurements of the cloud water chemistry (including the chemistry of sulphur compounds, organic and inorganic oxidised nitrogen and ammonia), cloud microphysics and properties of the aerosol and trace gas concentrations upwind and downwind of the cap cloud were undertaken. It was found that the cloud droplet number was generally strongly correlated to aerosol number concentration, with up to 2000 activated droplets cm-3 being observed in the most polluted conditions. In such conditions it was inferred that hygroscopic organic compounds were important in the activation process. Often, the size distribution of the aerosol was substantially modified by the cloud processing, largely due to the aqueous phase oxidation of S(IV) to sulphate by hydrogen peroxide, but also through the uptake and fixing of gas phase nitric acid as nitrate, increasing the calculated optical scattering of the aerosol substantially (by up to 24%). New particle formation was also observed in the ultrafine aerosol mode (at about 5 nm) downwind of the cap cloud, particularly in conditions of low total aerosol surface area and in the presence of ammonia and HCl gases. This was seen to occur at night as well as during the day via a mechanism which is not yet understood. The implications of these results for parameterising aerosol growth in Global Climate Models are explored.

  • Rapid and specific detection of Sin Nombre virus antibodies in patients with hantavirus pulmonary syndrome by a strip immunoblot assay suitable for field diagnosis.
  • 1997
  • Ingår i: Journal of Clinical Microbiology. - 0095-1137 .- 1098-660X. ; 35:3, s. 600-8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To develop a rapid antibody test for Sin Nombre hantavirus (SNV) infection for diagnosis of hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) in field settings where advanced instrumentation is not available, a strip immunoblot assay bearing four immobilized antigens for SNV and a recombinant nucleocapsid protein antigen of Seoul hantavirus (SEOV) was prepared. The SNV antigens included a full-length recombinant-expressed nucleocapsid (N) protein (rN), a recombinant-expressed G1 protein (residues 35 to 117), and synthetic peptides derived from N (residues 17 to 59) and G1 (residues 55 to 88). On the basis of the observed reactivities of hantavirus-infected patient and control sera, we determined that a positive assay requires reactivity with SNV or SEOV rN antigen and at least one other antigen. Isolated reactivity to either viral rN antigen is indeterminate, and any pattern of reactivity that does not include reactivity to an rN antigen is considered indeterminate but is unlikely to represent hantavirus infection. Fifty-eight of 59 samples from patients with acute SNV-associated HPS were positive according to these criteria, and one was initially indeterminate. Four of four samples from patients with HPS due to other hantaviruses were positive, as were most samples from patients with SEOV and Puumala virus infections. Of 192 control serum samples, 2 (1%) were positive and 2 were indeterminate. Acute SNV infection was distinguishable from remote SNV infection or infection with hantaviruses other than SNV by the presence of G1 peptide antigen reactivities in the former. The strip immunoblot assay shows promise for the detection of SNV antibodies early in the course of HPS.

  • Superdeformation in Po-198
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 53:2, s. R541-R543
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Yb-174(Si-29,5n) reaction at 148 MeV with thin targets was used to populate high-angular momentum states in Po-198. Resulting gamma rays were observed with Gammasphere. A weakly populated superdeformed band of 10 gamma-ray transitions was found and has been assigned to Po-198. This is the first observation of an SD band in the A approximate to 190 region in a nucleus with Z > 83. The J((2))) of the new band is very similar to those of the yrast SD bands in Hg-194 and Pb-196. The intensity profile suggests that this band is populated through states close to where the SD band crosses the yrast line and the angular momentum at which the fission process dominates.

  • Decay Out of the Doubly Magic Superdeformed Band in the N=Z Nucleus 60Zn
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114. ; 82:17, s. 3400-3403
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The doubly magic superdeformed band in the N = Z nucleus Zn-60 has been identified. Linking transitions connecting this band to the yrast line provide the first spin, parity, and excitation energy measurements for superdeformed states in the A similar to 60 region. The stretched-E2 character and relatively large B(E2) values of these transitions suggest a nonstatistical decay-out process.

  • Superdeformation in bismuth
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 53:1, s. 117-123
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High angular momentum states in Bi-195-197 are populated in two reactions: W-183(F-19,xn)Bi-202-x and Ta-181(Ne-20,xn)Bi-201-x at beam energies of 108 and 123 MeV, respectively. Gamma rays were detected using the Gammasphere array. Three weakly populated rotational sequences have been found. They each have properties characteristic of other superdeformed bands in this mass region. On the basis of cross-bombardment information we believe that one band belongs to each of Bi-195, Bi-196, and Bi-197. The properties of the bands in the odd-Bi nuclei are best reproduced if the odd proton occupies the favored signature of the [651]1/2 orbital, while the band in Bi-196 has this same proton configuration coupled to an additional N=7 (j(15/2)) neutron. The relative behavior of the J((2)) moments of inertia can be qualitatively understood in terms of Pauli-blocking effects.

  • Lifetime measurements of a triaxial band in Ce-133
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Acta Physica Hungarica A. - 1219-7580 .- 1588-2675. ; 7:1, s. 111-112
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Doppler shift attenuation method has been used to determine the transition quadrupole moment of a triaxial band belonging to the gamma-soft nucleus, Ce-133. Doppler broadened lineshape (DBLS) analysis has revealed the magnitude of the Q(t) value to be similar to 2.4 eb. This contribution provides new information of (i) the transition quadrupole moment of this band (ii) the lifetimes of in-band and sidefeeding transitions and (iii) the relative deformations of coexisting nuclear shapes.

  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 58:6, s. 3219-3222
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Lifetimes of states within a triaxial band belonging to;the gamma-soft nucleus Ce-133 have been determined through a Doppler-broadened line shape analysis. A value, Q(t)approximate to 2.2 eb, has been found for the transition quadrupole moment which is considerably smaller than that of superdeformed structures (Q(t)approximate to 7.4 e b) in this mass region. The results are discussed in terms of deformation self-consistent calculations based on the total Routhian surface formalism. [S0556-2813(98)01912-8].

  • Study of neutron-rich nuclei using deep-inelastic reactions
  • 1997
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 56:2, s. 753-759
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have used the Ca-48+Yb-176 reaction to study the population of high-spin states in neutron-rich nuclei by deep-inelastic reactions. Using Gammasphere, we observed gamma transitions from nuclei several neutrons richer than the target. Yrast states with spin up to 20 were populated in this reaction. High-spin states in Yb-175,Yb-177,Yb-178 were observed. In this region of reduced pairing, a reference based on experimental data was used to derive experimental Routhians. Systematics of experimental Routhians in neutron-rich Yb nuclei compare well with cranked shell-model calculations.

  • Observation and Quadrupole Moment Measurement of the First Superdeformed Band in the A~60 Mass Region
  • 1997
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114. ; 79:7, s. 1233-1236
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A high-spin rotational cascade of six gamma rays has been observed in Zn-62. The quadrupole moment of 2.7(-0.5)(+0.7) e b measured for this band corresponds to a deformation beta(2) = 0.45(-0.07)(+0.10). The properties of this band are in excellent agreement with calculations that predict high-spin superdeformed bands in Zn-62 with deformations beta(2) = 0.41-0.49. These results establish a new region of superdeformation for nuclei with neutron and proton numbers N, Z approximate to 30-32.

  • Smooth Termination of Rotational Bands in 62Zn: Evidence for a Loss of Collectivity
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114. ; 80:12, s. 2558-2561
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Two sets of strongly coupled rotational bands have been identified in Zn-62. These bands have been observed up to the terminating states of their respective configurations. Lifetime measurements indicate that the transition quadrupole moments in these bands decrease as termination is approached. These results establish the first terminating states of rotational bands in the A similar to 60 mass region and confirm the predicted loss of collectivity associated with smooth band termination.

  • Spin yields of neutron-rich nuclei from deep inelastic reactions
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 60:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The potential for using deep inelastic reactions to populate high-spin states in neutron-rich nuclei is studied in a series of experiments using GAMMASPHERE for gamma-ray detection and a silicon strip detector for measuring the angles of projectilelike and targetlike fragments. In three experiments 61 new transitions up to a maximum spin of 22 (h) over bar in 12 neutron-rich rare-earth nuclei were found. We observe that gamma-ray yields as a function of spin are flatter for all neutron transfer products than for inelastic excitation of either the projectile or target nucleus. Calculations are presented which indicate that this difference cannot be accounted for by quasielastic processes, but more likely are the result of larger energy loss processes, such as deep inelastic reactions. • 1996
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 53:4, s. R1461-R1464
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Three experiments using the (174) Yb(Mg-25,5n)Pb-194 reaction have been undertaken at the Early Implementation of Gammasphere to study the decay of known superdeformed states in Pb-194. A single discrete transition with an energy of 2.746(2) MeV carrying 6(2)% of the full superdeformed band intensity has been identified. A discussion of our results and the assignment of the 2.746-MeV transition as a discrete gamma ray directly connecting the superdeformed 8(+) and low-lying 6(+) levels will be presented.

  • Oral budesonide is as effective as oral prednisolone in active Crohn's disease. The Global Budesonide Study Group
  • 1997
  • Ingår i: Gut. - : BMJ. - 0017-5749 .- 1468-3288. ; 41:2, s. 209-214
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background—The use of corticosteroids in active Crohn’s disease often becomes limited by side effects. Budesonide is a potent corticosteroid with low systemic bioavailability due to an extensive first pass liver metabolism.Aims—To compare the efficacy and safety of two dosage regimens of budesonide and prednisolone in patients with active Crohn’s disease affecting the ileum and/or the ascending colon.Patients and methods—One hundred and seventy eight patients were randomised to receive budesonide controlled ileal release (CIR) capsules 9 mg once daily or 4.5 mg twice daily, or prednisolone tablets 40 mg once daily. The treatment period was 12 weeks. The primary efficacy variable was clinical remission, defined as a Crohn’s Disease Activity Index (CDAI) of 150 or less. Results—After eight weeks of treatment, remission occurred in 60% of patients receiving budesonide once daily or prednisolone and in 42% of those receiving budesonide twice daily (p=0.062). The presence of glucocorticoid associated side effects was similar in all groups; however, moon face was more common in the prednisolone group (p=0.0005). The highest frequency of impaired adrenal function, as measured by a short ACTH test, was found in the prednisolone group (p=0.0023).Conclusions—Budesonide CIR, administered at 9 mg once daily or 4.5 mg twice daily, is comparable to prednisolone in inducing remission in active Crohn’s disease. The single dose administration is as promptly effective as prednisolone and represents a simpler and safer therapeutic approach, with a considerable reduction in side effects.

  • Relative deformations of superdeformed bands in Ce-131,Ce-132
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 76:19, s. 3510-3513
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The quadrupole moments Q(0) of five superdeformed bands in Ce-131,Ce-132 have been established using the Doppler-shift attenuation method; for the first time, we can compare relative deformations of yrast and excited bands in different nuclei to an accuracy of similar or equal to(5-7)%. Four of the five bands have very similar deformations, while the excited band in Ce-131 has a somewhat larger quadrupole moment. Important new information is presented on the shape-driving force of the vi(13/2) orbital, the stability of the second minimum with respect to particle excitations, the relative deformations of identical bands, the nature of the sidefeeding, and the time scale of the decay process.

  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 54:4, s. 1585-1588

    • A search was undertaken to look for evidence of hyperdeformation in Gd-146,Gd-147. Three experiments employing Gammasphere for gamma-ray detection coupled with the Microball for channel selection via charged particle detection were carried out with increasing detection sensitivity and statistics. No definitive evidence for band structures that could be assigned to hyperdeformation could be found. Candidates previously reported are shown not to have properties consistent with a band structure.

  • New Band Structures and an Unpaired Crossing in 78Kr
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). - 0556-2813. ; 59:2, s. 655-664
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High-spin states in Kr-78 were studied using the Ni-58(Na-23,3p) reaction at 70 MeV and the Ni-58(Si-23,alpha 4p) reaction at 130 MeV. Prompt gamma-gamma coincidences were measured using the Pitt-FSU detector array and the GAMMASPHERE-MICROBALL array. Results from these experiments have led to 26 new excitation levels, some of which have been grouped into 3 new bands. Spins were assigned based on directional correlations of oriented nuclei. Two of the new negative-parity bands appear to form a signature-partner pair based on a two-quasineutron structure, in contrast to the previously known two-quasiproton negative-parity bands. A forking has been observed at the 24(+) state in the yrast band, which calculations suggest may result from an unpaired crossing. The available evidence suggests oblate shapes in the yrast band coexist with prolate shapes in the negative-parity bands. [S0556-2813(99)04602-6].

  • Comparison of Superdeformed Bands in 61Zn and 60Zn: Possible Evidence for T=0 Pairing
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). - 0556-2813. ; 60:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The yrast superdeformed band in Zn-61 has been established using Si-28(Ar-36, 2pn)Zn-61 and Ca-40(Si-29, 2 alpha)Zn-61 fusion-evaporation reactions. The excitation energy of this band was determined via two transitions that link this band to the normally deformed states. Lifetime analysis of this band resulted in a quadrupole moment of Q(t) = 3.0 +/- (0.5)(0.4)e b, which corresponds to a deformation of beta(2) = 0.50+/-(0.07)(0.06). A comparison of the J((2)) dynamical moments of inertia of the yrast superdeformed band in Zn-61 with those in Zn-60 shows a nearly complete blocking of the observed alignment in Zn-60, indicating that T=0 proton-neutron pair correlations may be present in Zn-60. • 1995
  • Ingår i: Journal of Infectious Diseases. - 0022-1899 .- 1537-6613. ; 172:6, s. 1581-4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Plaque-reduction neutralization tests were done with eight of nine known representative hantaviruses and immune sera from experimentally infected animals and from patients with hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) or hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS). Results obtained with animal sera demonstrated each virus to be antigenically unique. Neutralization with the HPS patient sera was highest with Sin Nombre (SN) virus and to a lesser extent with Black Creek Canal (BCC) virus. Sera from Korean HFRS patients reacted best with Hantaan virus, but cross-reactivity with all other viruses except Thottapalayam (TPM) virus was also observed. Sera from Swedish HFRS patients reacted best with Puumala virus but cross-reacted with Prospect Hill, SN, and BCC viruses and to a lesser extent with all of the other viruses except TPM virus.

  • LOW-SPIN TERMINATION OF THE SUPERDEFORMED BAND IN ND-135
  • 1995
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 52:5, s. R2302-R2305
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The decay of the superdeformed (SD) band in Nd-135 was studied with the early implementation of gamma-sphere. The results suggest that the SD band ''terminates'' at spin 25/2. This termination is explained by a change of the SD minimum toward a triaxial lower deformation. Ultimate cranker calculations with the i(13/2) orbital occupied relate this change to a shift of a proton and neutron pair out of deformation-driving Nilsson orbitals. This is a completely new and unexpected mechanism for the decay of SD bands.

  • Identification of excited states in doubly odd [Formula Presented]Sb : Smooth band termination
  • 1997
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C - Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813. ; 55:5, s. 2127-2131
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Excited states in [Formula Presented]Sb have been identified for the first time in a series of [Formula Presented]-spectroscopy experiments using both thin and backed targets, including neutron-fold and recoil-mass measurements to provide unambiguous channel identification. The three decoupled intruder bands observed in [Formula Presented]Sb are based upon configurations involving 2p-2h excitations across the [Formula Presented] shell gap and show the features of smooth band termination. The yrast intruder band, which has been connected to the low-spin levels, is tentatively identified up to its predicted termination at [Formula Presented]. Excellent agreement with configuration-dependent cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations is obtained for the high-spin states near termination.

  • Conformational transitions of the phosphodiester backbone in native DNA: two-dimensional magic-angle-spinning 31P-NMR of DNA fibers
  • 1997
  • Ingår i: Biophysical Journal. - 0006-3495 .- 1542-0086. ; 73:3, s. 1539-1552
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Solid-state 31P-NMR is used to investigate the orientation of the phosphodiester backbone in NaDNA-, LiDNA-, MgDNA-, and NaDNA-netropsin fibers. The results for A- and B-DNA agree with previous interpretations. We verify that the binding of netropsin to NaDNA stabilizes the B form, and find that in NaDNA, most of the phosphate groups adopt a conformation typical of the A form, although there are minor components with phosphate orientations close to the B form. For LiDNA and MgDNA samples, on the other hand, we find phosphate conformations that are in variance with previous models. These samples display x-ray diffraction patterns that correspond to C-DNA. However, we find two distinct phosphate orientations in these samples, one resembling that in B-DNA, and one displaying a twist of the PO4 groups about the O3-P-O4 bisectors. The latter conformation is not in accordance with previous models of C-DNA structure.

  • 1997
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 56:2, s. 772-781
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High-spin states in Kr-77 were identified via analysis of prompt gamma-gamma coincidences in the Ni-58(Si-29,2 alpha 2p) reaction at 128 MeV at the Gammasphere facility. Evaporation channel selection was achieved using the 95 element Microball charged-particle detector. 27 new states and 42 new transitions were found, The positive-parity bands were confirmed and the alpha=-1/2 band extended to 39/2(+). The negative-parity signature pair was extended to 31/2(-) and 37/2(-). Two new high-lying negative-parity bands were found extending from a state of spin I = 15/2 and energy 2.6 MeV to 17.4 MeV at I = (55/2). The new bands appear highly deformed and become yrast at high spin. A three-quasiparticle structure based on deformation driving, low-K unique-parity and intruder orbitals is suggested for them.
