  • Basic instrumentation for Hall A at Jefferson Lab
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments & Methods in Physics Research. Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors, and Associated Equipment. - : Elsevier BV. - 0167-5087 .- 0168-9002. ; 522:3, s. 294-346
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The instrumentation in Hall A at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility was designed to study electro-and photo-induced reactions at very high luminosity and good momentum and angular resolution for at least one of the reaction products. The central components of Hall A are two identical high resolution spectrometers, which allow the vertical drift chambers in the focal plane to provide a momentum resolution of better than 2 x 10(-4). A variety of Cherenkov counters, scintillators and lead-glass calorimeters provide excellent particle identification. The facility has been operated successfully at a luminosity well in excess of 10(38) CM-2 s(-1). The research program is aimed at a variety of subjects, including nucleon structure functions, nucleon form factors and properties of the nuclear medium. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  • Sequence and comparative analysis of the chicken genome provide unique perspectives on vertebrate evolution
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Nature. - 0028-0836 .- 1476-4687. ; 432:7018, s. 695-716
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present here a draft genome sequence of the red jungle fowl, Gallus gallus. Because the chicken is a modern descendant of the dinosaurs and the first non-mammalian amniote to have its genome sequenced, the draft sequence of its genome--composed of approximately one billion base pairs of sequence and an estimated 20,000-23,000 genes--provides a new perspective on vertebrate genome evolution, while also improving the annotation of mammalian genomes. For example, the evolutionary distance between chicken and human provides high specificity in detecting functional elements, both non-coding and coding. Notably, many conserved non-coding sequences are far from genes and cannot be assigned to defined functional classes. In coding regions the evolutionary dynamics of protein domains and orthologous groups illustrate processes that distinguish the lineages leading to birds and mammals. The distinctive properties of avian microchromosomes, together with the inferred patterns of conserved synteny, provide additional insights into vertebrate chromosome architecture.

  • Polarization transfer in the He-4((e)over-right-arrow,e '(p)over-right-arrow)H-3 reaction up to Q(2)=2.6 (GeV/c)(2)
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114. ; 91:5: 052301
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have measured the proton recoil polarization in the He-4((e) over right arrow ,e(')(p) over right arrow)H-4 reaction at Q(2)=0.5, 1.0, 1.6, and 2.6 (GeV/c)(2). The measured ratio of polarization transfer coefficients differs from a fully relativistic calculation, favoring the inclusion of a medium modification of the proton form factors predicted by a quark-meson coupling model. In addition, the measured induced polarizations agree reasonably well with the fully relativistic calculation indicating that the treatment of final-state interactions is under control.

  • Measurement of G(Ep)/G(Mp) in (e)over-right-arrowp -> e(p)over-right-arrow to Q(2)=5.6 GeV2
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114. ; 88:9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The ratio of the electric and magnetic form factors of the proton G(Ep)/G(Mp), which is an image of its charge and magnetization distributions, was measured at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab) using the recoil polarization technique. The ratio of the form factors is directly proportional to the ratio of the transverse to longitudinal components of the polarization of the recoil proton in the elastic (e) over right arrowp --> e (p) over right arrow reaction. The new data presented span the range 3.5 < Q(2) < 5.6 GeV2 and are well described by a linear Q(2) fit. Also, the ratio rootQ(2) F-2p/F-1p reaches a constant value above Q(2) = 2 GeV2.

  • Repetition of suicidal behaviour in elderly Europeans : a prospective longitudinal study.
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Journal of Affective Disorders. - 0165-0327 .- 1573-2517. ; 72:3, s. 291-5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to assess any predictive factors for repeated attempted suicide and completed suicide in a 1-year follow-up on a sample of elderly European suicide attempters (60 years and over). From 1990 to 1993, 63 subjects completed the first interview and were recontacted after 1 year. At follow-up, eight subjects (12.7%) had taken their lives and seven (11.1%) had repeated at least one suicide attempt. On comparison of repeaters and non-repeaters, differences emerged in terms of death of the father in childhood and for mean Suicidal Intent Score. At the end of follow-up period, repeaters reported a more frequent desire to repeat suicidal behaviour and judged their mental health and social assistance received to be worse. Suicides and non-repeaters differed especially in relation to death of father during childhood and number of contacts with General Practitioner. Interpretation of the results must take into account the smallness of the test sample, the difficulties in obtaining complete data for the follow-up interview, the lack of a control group and a diagnosis formulated in a hospital consultation setting. The study confirms, however, the high risk of repetition of suicidal behaviour in the elderly. In old age suicidal ideation is often sustained over long periods of time and requests for help are addressed to relatives and GPs. An interesting finding is the more frequent death of the father during childhood among repeaters.

  • Methods used for parasuicide : results of the WHO/EURO Multicentre Study on Parasuicide.
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Social Psychiatry and Psychiatric Epidemiology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0933-7954 .- 1433-9285. ; 35:4, s. 156-63
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There is a need, especially for areas with high frequencies for certain methods, to understand the factors involved and to develop new and specific prevention projects and to monitor their effects. The WHO/EURO Multicentre Study on Parasuicide has proved to be a useful and reliable instrument for continuous monitoring of trends in parasuicide.

  • Attempted and completed suicide in older subjects : results from the WHO/EURO Multicentre Study of Suicidal Behaviour.
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry. - : Wiley. - 0885-6230 .- 1099-1166. ; 16:3, s. 300-10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Stockholm (Sweden), Pontoise (France) and Oxford (UK) had the highest suicide attempts rates. In most centres, the majority of elderly who attempted suicide were widow(er)s, often living alone, who used predominantly voluntary drug ingestion. Non-fatal suicidal behaviour decreased with increasing age, whereas suicide rates rose. The ratio between fatal and non-fatal behaviours was 1:2, that for males/females almost 1:1. In the years considered, substantial stability in suicide and attempted suicide rates was observed. As their age increased, suicidal subjects displayed only a limited tendency to repeat self-destructive acts. Moreover, there was little correlation between attempted suicide and suicide rates, which carries different clinical implications for non-fatal suicidal behaviour in the elderly compared with younger subjects in the same WHO/EURO study.

  • Follow-up of antiretroviral treatment in liver transplant recipients with primary and chronic HIV type 1 infection
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: AIDS Research and Human Retroviruses. - : Mary Ann Liebert Inc. - 1931-8405 .- 0889-2229. ; 19:1, s. 13-19
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The prognosis of HIV-1-infected patients has dramatically improved but progression to liver failure occurs now frequently in subjects coinfected with hepatitis C virus (HCV). This has raised the issue of organ transplantation, but the knowledge about the effect of concomitant antiretroviral and immunosuppressive therapy is limited. The objective of the study was to describe viral and immunological events in antiretroviral-treated orthotopic liver transplant (OLT) recipients with primary (PHI) or chronic HIV-1 infection. Three HIV-1-infected patients with liver cirrhosis due to chronic HCV infection underwent OLT. A fourth patient developed PHI at OLT. Immunosuppressive drugs and combination antiretroviral therapy were given. The effects on HIV-1 load, viral diversity and divergence, and CD4(+) T cell counts, were studied. One patient died after 3 months. Three subjects were alive after 9 months, 14 months, and 3 years, respectively. In the PHI patient, viral load decreased during the second week of illness despite immunosuppression. During the third week the viremia increased until antiretroviral treatment was initiated. In all four patients, the HIV-1 replication was effectively inhibited during follow-up by the treatment, as determined by undetectable plasma viremia, lack of viral sequence changes, and increase in CD4(+) T cells. The pattern of viral dynamics may suggest that the innate immunity causes the earliest decline of viral load in PHI patients. A lack of adaptive immunity may thereafter lead to an increase in viremia in heavily immunosuppressed individuals. However, a specific HIV-1 immunity is not necessary to efficiently inhibit the viral replication when potent antiretroviral therapy is given in liver transplant recipients with primary or chronic HIV-1 infection.

  • Task Force on Sudden Cardiac Death, European Society of Cardiology
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Europace. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 1099-5129 .- 1532-2092. ; 4:1, s. 3-18
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The European Society of Cardiology has convened a Task Force on Sudden Cardiac Death in order to provide a comprehensive, educational document on this important topic. The main document has been published in the European Heart Journal in August 2001[1]. The Task Force has now summarized the most important clinical issues on sudden cardiac death and provided tables with recommendations for risk stratification and for prophylaxis of sudden cardiac death. The present recommendations are specifically intended to encourage the development and revision of national guidelines on prevention of sudden cardiac death. The common challenge for cardiologists, physicians of other medical specialties and health professionals throughout Europe is to realize the potential for sudden cardiac death prevention and to contribute to public health efforts to reduce its burden.

  • Intercellular adhesion molecule-4 binds alpha(4)beta(1) and alpha(V)-family integrins through novel integrin-binding mechanisms
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Blood. - 1528-0020. ; 98:2, s. 458-466
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The LW blood group glycoprotein, ICAM-4, is a member of the intercellular adhesion molecule (ICAM) family expressed in erythroid cells. To begin to address the function of this molecule, ligands for ICAM-4 on hemopoietic and nonhemopoietic cell lines were identified. Peptide inhibition studies suggest that adhesion of cell lines to an ICAM-4-Fc construct is mediated by an LDV-inhibitable integrin on hemopoietic cells and an RGD-inhibitable integrin on nonhemopoietic cells. Antibody inhibition studies identified the hemopoietic integrin as alpha(4)beta(1.) Antibody inhibition studies on alpha(4)beta(1)-negative, nonhemopoietic cell lines suggested that adhesion of these cells is mediated by alpha(V) integrins (notably alpha(V)beta(1) and alpha(V)beta(5)). The structure of ICAM-4 modeled on the crystal structure of ICAM-2 was used to identify surface-exposed amino acid residues for site-directed mutagenesis. Neither an unusual LETS nor an LDV motif in the first domain of ICAM-4 was critical for integrin binding. ICAM-4 is the first ICAM family member shown to be a ligand for integrins other than those of the beta(2) family, and the data suggest that ICAM-4 has a novel integrin-binding site(s). These findings suggest a role for ICAM-4 in normal erythropoiesis and may also be relevant to the adhesive interactions of sickle cells.
