  • Geometry design of tethered small-molecule acceptor enables highly stable and efficient polymer solar cells
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - : NATURE PORTFOLIO. - 2041-1723. ; 14:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With the power conversion efficiency of binary polymer solar cells dramatically improved, the thermal stability of the small-molecule acceptors raised the main concerns on the device operating stability. Here, to address this issue, thiophene-dicarboxylate spacer tethered small-molecule acceptors are designed, and their molecular geometries are further regulated via the thiophene-core isomerism engineering, affording dimeric TDY-alpha with a 2, 5-substitution and TDY-beta with 3, 4-substitution on the core. It shows that TDY-alpha processes a higher glass transition temperature, better crystallinity relative to its individual small-molecule acceptor segment and isomeric counterpart of TDY-beta, and amore stablemorphology with the polymer donor. As a result, the TDY-alpha based device delivers a higher device efficiency of 18.1%, and most important, achieves an extrapolated lifetime of about 35000 hours that retaining 80% of their initial efficiency. Our result suggests that with proper geometry design, the tethered small-molecule acceptors can achieve both high device efficiency and operating stability.

  • Highly Efficient SO2 Sensing by Light-Assisted Ag/PANI/SnO2 at Room Temperature and the Sensing Mechanism
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1944-8244 .- 1944-8252. ; 13:41, s. 49194-49205
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sulfur dioxide (SO2) is one of the most hazardous and common environmental pollutants. However, the development of room-temperature SO2 sensors is seriously lagging behind that of other toxic gas sensors due to their poor recovery properties. In this study, a light-assisted SO2 gas sensor based on polyaniline (PANI) and Ag nanoparticle-comodified tin dioxide nanostructures (Ag/PANI/SnO2) was developed and exhibited remarkable SO2 sensitivity and excellent recovery properties. The response of the Ag/PANI/SnO2 sensor (20.1) to 50 ppm SO2 under 365 nm ultraviolet (UV) light illumination at 20 °C was almost 10 times higher than that of the pure SnO2 sensor. Significantly, the UV-assisted Ag/PANI/SnO2 sensor had a rapid response time (110 s) and recovery time (100 s) to 50 ppm SO2, but in the absence of light, the sensors exhibited poor recovery performance or were even severely and irreversibly deactivated by SO2. The UV-assisted Ag/PANI/SnO2 sensor also exhibited excellent selectivity, superior reproducibility, and satisfactory long-term stability at room temperature. The increased charge carrier density, improved charge-transfer capability, and the higher active surface of the Ag/PANI/SnO2 sensor were revealed by electrochemical measurements and endowed with high SO2 sensitivity. Moreover, the light-induced formation of hot electrons in a high-energy state in Ag/PANI/SnO2 significantly facilitated the recovery of SO2 by the gas sensor.

  • Galactic Radio Explorer: An All-sky Monitor for Bright Radio Bursts
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Publications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific. - : IOP Publishing. - 0004-6280 .- 1538-3873. ; 133:1025
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present the Galactic Radio Explorer (GReX), an all-sky monitor to probe the brightest bursts in the radio sky. Building on the success of STARE2, we will search for fast radio bursts emitted from Galactic magnetars as well as bursts from nearby galaxies. GReX will search down to similar to ten microseconds time resolution, allowing us to find new super giant radio pulses from Milky Way pulsars and study their broadband emission. The proposed instrument will employ ultra-wide band (0.7-2 GHz) feeds coupled to a high-performance (receiver temperature <10 K) low noise amplifier originally developed for the DSA-110 and DSA-2000 projects. In GReX Phase I (GReX-I), unit systems will be deployed at Owens Valley Radio Observatory and Big Smoky Valley, Nevada. Phase II will expand the array, placing feeds in India, Australia, and elsewhere in order to build up to continuous coverage of nearly 4 pi steradians and to increase our exposure to the Galactic plane. We model the local magnetar population to forecast for GReX, finding the improved sensitivity and increased exposure to the Galactic plane could lead to dozens of FRB-like bursts per year.

  • How Early-Life Gut Microbiota Alteration Sets Trajectories for Health and Inflammatory Bowel Disease?
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Nutrition. - : Frontiers Media S.A.. - 2296-861X. ; 8
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a recurrent chronic inflammatory condition of the intestine without any efficient therapeutic regimens. Gut microbiota, which plays an instrumental role in the development and maturation of the immune system, has been implicated in the pathogenesis of IBD. Emerging evidence has established that early-life events particularly maternal influences and antibiotic treatment are strongly correlated with the health or susceptibility to disease of an individual in later life. Thus, it is proposed that there is a critical period in infancy, during which the environmental exposures bestow a long-term pathophysiological imprint. This notion sheds new light on the development of novel approaches for the treatment, i.e., early interventions, more precisely, the prevention of many uncurable chronic inflammatory diseases like IBD. In this review, we have integrated current evidence to describe the feasibility of the "able-to-be-regulated microbiota," summarized the underlying mechanisms of the "microbiota-driven immune system education," explored the optimal intervention time window, and discussed the potential of designing early-probiotic treatment as a new prevention strategy for IBD.

  • Sex-related differences in the hypertriglyceridemic-waist phenotype in association with hyperuricemia : a longitudinal cohort study
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Lipids in Health and Disease. - : Springer Nature. - 1476-511X. ; 22
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: There is limited longitudinal evidence supporting the association between the hypertriglyceridemic-waist (HTGW) phenotype and hyperuricemia. This study aimed to examine the longitudinal relationship between hyperuricemia and the HTGW phenotype among males and females. Methods: A total of 5562 hyperuricemia-free participants aged 45 or over from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (mean age: 59.0) were followed for 4 years. The HTGW phenotype was defined as having elevated triglyceride levels and enlarged waist circumference (cutoffs for males: 2.0 mmol/L and 90 cm; females: 1.5 mmol/L and 85 cm). Hyperuricemia was determined by uric acid cutoffs (males: 7 mg/dl; females: 6 mg/dl. Multivariate logistic regression models were used to assess the association between the HTGW phenotype and hyperuricemia. The joint effect of the HTGW phenotype and sex on hyperuricemia was quantified, and the multiplicative interaction was assessed. Results: During the four-year follow-up, 549 (9.9%) incident hyperuricemia cases were ascertained. Compared with those with normal levels of triglycerides and waist circumference, participants with the HTGW phenotype had the highest risk of hyperuricemia (OR: 2.67; 95% CI: 1.95 to 3.66), followed by an OR of 1.96 (95% CI: 1.40 to 2.74) for only higher triglyceride levels and 1.39 (95% CI: 1.03 to 1.86) for only greater waist circumference. The association between HTGW and hyperuricemia was more prominent among females (OR = 2.36; 95% CI: 1.77 to 3.15) than males (OR = 1.29; 95% CI: 0.82 to 2.04), with evidence of a multiplicative interaction (P = 0.006).Conclusions: Middle-aged and older females with the HTGW phenotype may at the highest risk of hyperuricemia. Future hyperuricemia prevention interventions should be primarily targeted for females with the HTGW phenotype.

  • Differential gene expression and potential regulatory network of fatty acid biosynthesis during fruit and leaf development in yellowhorn (Xanthoceras sorbifolium), an oil-producing tree with significant deployment values
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Plant Science. - : Frontiers Media S.A.. - 1664-462X. ; 14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Xanthoceras sorbifolium (yellowhorn) is a woody oil plant with super stress resistance and excellent oil characteristics. The yellowhorn oil can be used as biofuel and edible oil with high nutritional and medicinal value. However, genetic studies on yellowhorn are just in the beginning, and fundamental biological questions regarding its very long-chain fatty acid (VLCFA) biosynthesis pathway remain largely unknown. In this study, we reconstructed the VLCFA biosynthesis pathway and annotated 137 genes encoding relevant enzymes. We identified four oleosin genes that package triacylglycerols (TAGs) and are specifically expressed in fruits, likely playing key roles in yellowhorn oil production. Especially, by examining time-ordered gene co-expression network (TO-GCN) constructed from fruit and leaf developments, we identified key enzymatic genes and potential regulatory transcription factors involved in VLCFA synthesis. In fruits, we further inferred a hierarchical regulatory network with MYB-related (XS03G0296800) and B3 (XS02G0057600) transcription factors as top-tier regulators, providing clues into factors controlling carbon flux into fatty acids. Our results offer new insights into key genes and transcriptional regulators governing fatty acid production in yellowhorn, laying the foundation for efforts to optimize oil content and fatty acid composition. Moreover, the gene expression patterns and putative regulatory relationships identified here will inform metabolic engineering and molecular breeding approaches tailored to meet biofuel and bioproduct demands.

  • Multi-AI competing and winning against humans in iterated Rock-Paper-Scissors game
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - : Nature Publishing Group. - 2045-2322. ; 10:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Predicting and modeling human behavior and finding trends within human decision-making processes is a major problem of social science. Rock Paper Scissors (RPS) is the fundamental strategic question in many game theory problems and real-world competitions. Finding the right approach to beat a particular human opponent is challenging. Here we use an AI (artificial intelligence) algorithm based on Markov Models of one fixed memory length (abbreviated as "single AI") to compete against humans in an iterated RPS game. We model and predict human competition behavior by combining many Markov Models with different fixed memory lengths (abbreviated as "multi-AI"), and develop an architecture of multi-AI with changeable parameters to adapt to different competition strategies. We introduce a parameter called "focus length" (a positive number such as 5 or 10) to control the speed and sensitivity for our multi-AI to adapt to the opponent's strategy change. The focus length is the number of previous rounds that the multi-AI should look at when determining which Single-AI has the best performance and should choose to play for the next game. We experimented with 52 different people, each playing 300 rounds continuously against one specific multi-AI model, and demonstrated that our strategy could win against more than 95% of human opponents.

  • Revisiting the phylogeny of Dipsacales: New insights from phylogenomic analyses of complete plastomic sequences
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Systematics and Evolution. - : Wiley. - 1674-4918 .- 1759-6831. ; 58:2, s. 103-117
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Phylogenetic relationships in Dipsacales have long been a major challenge. Although considerable progress has been made during the past two decades, questions remain; the uncertain systematic positions of Heptacodium, Triplostegia, and Zabelia, in particular, impede our understanding of Dipsacales evolution. Here we use 75 complete plastomic sequences to reconstruct the phylogeny of Dipsacales, of which 28 were newly generated. Two primary clades were recovered that form the phylogenetic backbone of Dipsacales. Seven of the primary clades correspond to the recognized families Adoxaceae, Caprifoliaceae s. str., Diervillaceae, Dipsacaceae, Linnaeaceae, Morinaceae, and Valerianaceae, and one corresponds to Zabelia, which was found to be the closest relative of Morinaceae in all analyses. Additionally, our results, with greatly increased confidence in most branches, show that Heptacodium and Triplostegia are members of Caprifoliaceae s. str. and Dipsacaceae, respectively. The results of our study indicate that the complete plastomic sequences provide a fully‐resolved and well‐supported representation of the phylogenetic relationships within Dipsacales.

  • A window–space-directed assembly strategy for the construction of supertetrahedron-based zeolitic mesoporous metal–organic frameworks with ultramicroporous apertures for selective gas adsorption
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Chemical Science. - : Royal Society of Chemistry. - 2041-6520 .- 2041-6539. ; 12:16, s. 5767-5773
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Despite their scarcity due to synthetic challenges, supertetrahedron-based metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) possess intriguing architectures, diverse functionalities, and superb properties that make them in‑demand materials. Employing a new window–space-directed assembly strategy, a family of mesoporous zeolitic MOFs have been constructed herein from corner-shared supertetrahedra based on homometallic or heterometallic trimers [M3(OH/O)(COO)6] (M3 = Co3, Ni3 or Co2Ti). These MOFs consisted of close-packed truncated octahedral cages possessing a sodalite topology and large β-cavity mesoporous cages (~22 Å diameter) connected by ultramicroporous apertures (~5.6 Å diameter). Notably, the supertetrahedron-based sodalite topology MOF composed with the Co2Ti trimer exhibited high thermal and chemical stability as well as the ability to efficiently separate acetylene (C2H2) from carbon dioxide (CO2).
