  • Measurement of eta meson decays into lepton-antilepton pairs
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Physical Review D. Particles and fields. - : American Physical Society. - 0556-2821 .- 1089-4918. ; 77:3, s. 032004-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A search for rare lepton decays of the eta meson was performed using the WASA detector at CELSIUS. Two candidates for double Dalitz decay eta -> e(+)e(-)e(+)e(-) events are reported with a background of 1.3 +/- 0.2 events. This allows to set an upper limit to the branching ratio of 9.7x10(-5) (90% CL). The branching ratio for the decay eta -> e(+)e(-)gamma is determined to (7.8 +/- 0.5(stat)+/- 0.8(syst))x10(-3) in agreement with world average value. An upper limit (90% CL) for the branching ratio for the eta -> e(+)e(-) decay is 2.7x10(-5) and a limit for the sum of the eta ->mu(+)mu(-)mu(+)mu(-) and eta ->pi(+)pi(-)mu(+)mu(-) decays is 3.6x10(-4).

  • Exclusive measurement of two-pion production in the dd -> He-4 pi pi reaction
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Physics A. - : Elsevier BV. - 0375-9474 .- 1873-1554. ; 825:1-2, s. 71-90
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The results from the first kinematically complete measurement of the dd -> He-4 pi pi reaction are reported. The aim was to investigate a long standing puzzle regarding the origin of the peculiar pi pi-invariant mass distributions appearing in double pion production in light ion collisions, the so-called ABC effect. The measurements were performed at the incident deuteron energies of 712 MeV and 1029 MeV. with the WASA detector assembly at CELSIUS in Uppsala, Sweden. We report the observation of a characteristic enhancement at low pi pi-invariant mass at 712 MeV, the lowest energy yet. At the higher energy, in addition to confirming previous experimental observations, Our results reveal a strong angular dependence of the pions in the overall centre of mass system. The results are qualitatively reproduced by a theoretical model, according to which the ABC effect is described as resulting from a kinematical enhancement in the production of the pion pairs from two parallel and independent NN -> d pi sub-processes. • Production of the omega meson in the pd -> He-3 omega reaction at 1450 MeV and 1360 MeV
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 79:4, s. 044002-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The production of omega mesons in the pd -> He-3 omega reaction has been studied at two energies near the kinematic threshold, T-p = 1450 MeV and T-p = 1360 MeV. The differential cross section was measured as a function of the omega c.m. angle at both energies over the whole angular range. Whereas the results at 1360 MeV are consistent with isotropy, strong rises are observed near both the forward and backward directions at 1450 MeV. Calculations made using a two-step model with an intermediate pion fail to reproduce the shapes of the measured angular distributions and also underestimate the total cross sections.

  • Double-Pionic Fusion of Nuclear Systems and the "ABC" Effect : Approaching a Puzzle by Exclusive and Kinematically Complete Measurements
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 102:5, s. 052301-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The ABC effect-a puzzling low-mass enhancement in the pi pi invariant mass spectrum, first observed by Abashian, Booth, and Crowe-is well known from inclusive measurements of two-pion production in nuclear fusion reactions. Here we report on the first exclusive and kinematically complete measurements of the most basic double-pionic fusion reaction pn -> d pi(0)pi(0) at beam energies of 1.03 and 1.35 GeV. The measurements, which have been carried out at CELSIUS-WASA, reveal the ABC effect to be a (pi pi)(I=L=0) channel phenomenon associated with both a resonancelike energy dependence in the integral cross section and the formation of a Delta Delta system in the intermediate state. A corresponding simple s-channel resonance ansatz provides a surprisingly good description of the data.

  • Major determinants of height development in Turner syndrome (TS) patients treated with GH: analysis of 987 patients from KIGS
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Pediatr Res. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0031-3998. ; 61:1, s. 105-10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Little is known about factors determining height outcome during GH treatment in Turner syndrome (TS). We investigated 987 TS children within the Kabi International Growth Study (KIGS) who had reached near adult height (NAH) after >4 y GH treatment (including >1 y before puberty). Through multiple regression analysis we developed a model for NAH and total gain. Our results were as follows (median): 1) At start, age 9.7 yrs, height (HT) 118.0 cm (0.0 TS SDS), projected adult height 146.1 cm, GH dose 0.27 mg/kg wk; 2) NAH HT 151.0 cm (1.5 TS SDS); 3) Prepubertal gain 21.2 cm (1.6 TS SDS); 4) Pubertal gain 9.4 cm (0.0 TS SDS). NAH correlated (r = 0.67) with (ranked) HT at GH start (+), 1 year responsiveness to GH (+), MPH (+), age at puberty onset (+), age at GH start (-), and dose (+). The same factors explained (R = 0.90) the total HT gain. However, HT at GH start correlated negatively. Karyotype had no influence on outcome. Evidently, height at GH start (the taller, the better), age at GH start (the younger, the better), the responsiveness to GH (the higher, the better) and age at puberty (the later, the better) determine NAH.

  • Polarisation of the omega meson in the pd -> He-3 omega reaction at 1360 and 1450 MeV
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters B. - elsevier : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693 .- 1873-2445. ; 668:4, s. 258-262
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The tensor polarisation of omega mesons produced in the pd -> He-3 omega reaction has been studied at two energies near threshold. The 3 He nuclei were detected in coincidence with the pi(0)pi(+)pi(-) or pi(0)gamma decay products of the omega. in contrast to the case of phi-meson production, the omega mesons are found to be unpolarised. This brings into question the applicability of the Okubo-Zweig-lizuka rule when comparing the production of vector mesons in low energy hadronic reactions.

  • A large Escherichia coli O157 outbreak in Sweden associated with locally produced lettuce.
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Foodborne pathogens and disease. - : Mary Ann Liebert Inc. - 1556-7125 .- 1535-3141. ; 5:3, s. 339-49
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In 2005 a large outbreak of verotoxin-producing Escherichia coli (VTEC) occurred in Sweden. Cases were interviewed and cohort and case-control studies were conducted. Microbiological investigations were performed using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to detect the Shiga-like toxin (Stx) genes followed by cultivation and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis. A total of 135 cases were recorded, including 11 cases of hemolytic uremic syndrome. The epidemiological investigations implicated lettuce as the most likely source of the outbreak, with an OR of 13.0 (CI 2.94-57.5) in the case-control study. The lettuce was irrigated by water from a small stream, and water samples were positive for Stx 2 by PCR. The identical VTEC O157 Stx 2 positive strain was isolated from the cases and in cattle at a farm upstream from the irrigation point. An active surveillance and reporting system was crucial and cooperation between all involved parties was essential for quickly identifying the cause of this outbreak. Handling of fresh greens from farm to table must be improved to minimize the risk of contamination.

  • Structural and magnetic properties of LaFe0.5Cr0.5O3 studied by neutron diffraction, electron diffraction and magnetometry
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Materials Research Bulletin. - 0025-5408. ; 40(10), s. 1633-1644
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The structural and magnetic properties of the perovskite type compound LaFe0.5Cr0.5O3 have been studied by temperature dependent neutron powder diffraction and magnetization measurements. Rietveld refinement of the neutron diffraction data shows that the compound crystallizes in an orthorhombic perovskite structure with a random positioning of the Fe and Cr cations at the B sublattice. The magnetic structure at 10 K is a collinear antiferromagnetic one with the magnetic moment per site being equal to 2.79(4) mu(B). Magnetisation measurements confirm the overall antiferromagnetic behaviour. Moreover, it indicates a weak uncompensated magnetic moment close to the transition temperature T-N approximate to 265 K. This moment can be described by a magnetic cluster state, which remains up to 550 K. Electron diffraction patterns along with high-resolution transmission electron microscopy images reveal that the crystallites are composed by domains of different orientation, which share the same cubic perovskite sub-cell reflections. • Bone Age Progression during the First Year of Growth Hormone Therapy in Pre-Pubertal Children with Idiopathic Growth Hormone Deficiency, Turner Syndrome or Idiopathic Short Stature, and in Short Children Born Small for Gestational Age: Analysis of Data from KIGS (Pfizer International Growth Database)
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Horm Res. ; 63:1, s. 40-7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background/Aims: The beneficial effects of growth hormone (GH) therapy on statural growth in children are well established, but the effects on skeletal maturation are less clear. The progression of bone age (BA) was therefore studied during the first year of GH treatment in pre-pubertal children with idiopathic GH deficiency (GHD), Turner syndrome (TS) or idiopathic short stature (ISS), and in short pre-pubertal children born small for gestational age (SGA). Methods: Cross-sectional data on 2,209 short children with idiopathic GHD, 694 with TS, 569 with ISS and 153 with SGA were analysed. Longitudinal data were also analysed from 308 children with idiopathic GHD, 99 with TS, 57 with ISS and 29 with SGA. All patients included in the study were enrolled in KIGS (Pfizer International Growth Database) and were being treated with recombinant human GH (Genotropin((R))). BA was assessed using the Greulich and Pyle method at baseline and after 1 year of GH therapy. Results: In all groups of patients the mean progression of BA was 1 year during the year of GH therapy, although there was considerable individual variation. Progression of BA was not correlated with chronological age, BA, height SD score (SDS) or body mass index SDS at the onset of GH therapy. There was also no consistent effect of the GH dose on BA progression. Conclusion: Progression of BA appears to be normal in patients receiving GH in these diagnostic groups, at least over the first year of treatment in pre-puberty. Copyright (c) 2005 S. • Patch testing with methyldibromo glutaronitrile, a multicentre study within the EECDRG
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Contact Dermatitis. - : Wiley. - 0105-1873 .- 1600-0536. ; 52:1, s. 14-18
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Contact allergy to and allergic contact dermatitis from methyldibromo glutaronitrile (MDBGN) have frequently been reported. As there has been no agreement on which MDBGN test preparation to use, a study was initiated to help determine the optimal patch test preparation for MDBGN. 2661 consecutively patch tested patients at 11 test clinics representing 9 European countries participated. Petrolatum preparations with MDBGN at 1.0%, 0.5%, 0.3% and 0.1% were inserted in the standard series. Contact allergy rates were noted in the range 4.4-1.1% following decreasing test concentrations. Reactions not fulfilling all criteria to be classified as allergic reactions could represent either weak allergic or irritant reactions, and such reactions were noted in the range 8.2-0.5% with decreasing concentrations. A significant number of these reactions represented weak allergic reactions, as allergic reactions were obtained to higher patch test concentrations in the same individual. Morphologically irritant reactions were noted only for the highest test concentrations. In summary, the contact allergy rates and frequencies of doubtful and irritant reactions vary with the patch test concentration. The final decision on patch test concentration for MDBGN should not only rely on these factors but also include information on patch test concentrations required to diagnose individual cases with allergic contact dermatitis from MDBGN as well as results of repeated open application tests.

  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Chemosphere. - : Elsevier BV. - 0045-6535. ; 73:1, Supplement 1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The diastereomeric composition of hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) in eggs of peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus), white-tailed sea eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla), guillemot (Uria aalge) and common tern (Sterna hirundo) as well as the guillemots’ main prey, herring (Clupea harengus) was determined by reversed-phase chromatography with triple-stage quadrupole mass spectrometric detection (LC–MS–MS). α-HBCD was the predominant diastereomer in all bird species, while in herring, γ-HBCD made a substantial contribution. Two, as yet unidentified diastereomers, were detected in common tern egg. The α-, β- and γ-HBCD (+) and (−) enantiomers were separated using a chiral stationary phase. The enantiomer fractions for α-HBCD differed substantially between different bird species as well as between guillemot and its prey, herring. Total HBCD levels determined by LC–MS–MS were comparable to those previously obtained by GC–MS.

  • Effects of three months of low molecular weight heparin (dalteparin) treatment after bypass surgery for lower limb ischemia--a randomised placebo-controlled double blind multicentre trial.
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: European journal of vascular and endovascular surgery : the official journal of the European Society for Vascular Surgery. - : Elsevier BV. - 1078-5884. ; 29:2, s. 190-8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVES: To test the hypothesis that long-term postoperative dalteparin (Fragmin), Pharmacia Corp) treatment improves primary patency of peripheral arterial bypass grafts (PABG) in lower limb ischemia patients on acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) treatment. DESIGN: Prospective randomised double blind multicenter study. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using a computer algorithm 284 patients with lower limb ischemia, most with pre-operative ischemic ulceration or partial gangrene, from 12 hospitals were randomised, after PABG, to 5000 IU dalteparin or placebo injections once daily for 3 months. All patients received 75 mg of ASA daily for 12 months. Graft patency was assessed at 1, 3 and 12 months. RESULTS: At 1 year, 42 patients had died or were lost to follow-up. Compliance with the injection schedule was 80%. Primary patency rate, in the dalteparin versus the control group, respectively, was 83 versus 80% (n.s.) at 3 months and 59% for both groups at 12 months. Major complication rates and cardiovascular morbidity were not different between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS: In patients on ASA treatment, long-term postoperative dalteparin treatment did not improve patency after peripheral artery bypass grafting. Therefore, low molecular weight heparin treatment cannot be recommended for routine use after bypass surgery for critical lower limb ischemia.

  • Effect of power density of curing unit, exposure duration, and light guide distance on composite depth of cure.
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Clinical Oral Investigations. ; 9:2, s. 71-6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This in vitro study compared the depth of cure obtained with six quartz tungsten halogen and light-emitting diode curing units at different exposure times and light tip-resin composite distances. Resin composite specimens (Tetric Ceram, A3; diameter 4 mm, height 6 mm) were exposed from 0-, 3-, and 6-mm distance. The curing units (200-700 mW/cm2) were used for standard (20 and 40 s), pulse-delay mode (initial exposure of 3 s at 200 mW/cm2, followed by a resting period of 3 min and a final exposure of 10 or 30 s at 600 mW/cm2), or soft-start curing (40 s; exponential ramping). Curing depth was determined by measurement of Wallace hardness for each half millimeter starting at 0.5 mm from the top surface. For each specimen, a mean H(W) value was calculated from the H(W) values determined at the depths of 2.0 mm and less (0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 mm, respectively). The depth of cure for each specimen was found by determining the greatest depth before an H(W) value exceeding the minimal H(W) value by 25% occurred. For all curing units, an increase in exposure time led to significantly higher depth of cure. Increasing the light tip-resin composite distance significantly reduced the depth of cure. With a light tip-resin composite distance of 6 mm, median values of depth of cure varied between 2.0 and 3.5 mm following a 20-s (or 3+10 s) exposure and between 3.0 and 4.5 mm following a 40-s (or 3+30 s) exposure. The composite situated above the depth of cure value cured equally well with all curing units. At both exposure times, Luxomax resulted in the significantly lowest depth of cure, and Astralis 7 yielded significantly higher depth. At both exposure times, a significant linear correlation was found between the determined power densities of the curing units and the pooled depth of cure values obtained. It seems that for the resin composite tested, the recommended exposure time of 40 s per 2-mm increment may be reduced to 20 s, or that increments may be increased from 2 to 3.5 mm. It may be that the absolute values of depth of cure found are material specific, but we believe that the relationships found between curing units, between exposure times, and between light guide distances are universal.

  • Modeling of Cherenkov light emission from BWR nuclear fuel with missing or substituted rods
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: IAEA Symposium on International Safeguards: Addressing Verification Challenges.
  • Konferensbidrag (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • Computer simulations of Cherenkov glow from spent nuclear fuel were carried out. Spent nuclear fuel in storage ponds are verified with the help of the Cherenkov viewing device (CVD) and the Digital Cherenkov viewing device (DCVD). The instruments image the Cherenkov glow generated by gamma ray emissions from spent fuel into the water. An attempt to build a realistic digital model of the DCVD image containing partial-length, missing, and substituted rods was made to see if the effects of the deviations from normal can be predicted. It was concluded that partial-length or missing rods in the model was in good agreement with measured data, but replaced rods in the model showed a weaker attenuation of the Cherenkov glow than the observed DCVD images.
