  • Immunoreactive trypsin(Ogen) in the sera of children with recent-onset insulin-dependent diabetes and matched controls
  • 1990
  • Ingår i: Pancreas. - : Ovid Technologies (Wolters Kluwer Health). - 0885-3177. ; 5:3, s. 241-247
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To evaluate the exocrine pancreatic function at the time of diagnosis of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, we determined immunoreactive an-odal and cathodal trypsin(ogen) levels in sera from almost all children (n = 375) 0-14 years of age in Sweden in whom diabetes developed during 1 year, and in sex-, age-, and geographically matched control subjects (n = 312). The median level of anodal trypsin(ogen) was 5 (quartile range, 3-7) µg/L in children with newly diagnosed diabetes, compared with a median level of 7 (quartile range, 4-8) µg/L in control subjects (p < 0.0001). Similarly, the median level of cathodal trypsin(ogen) was 8 (quartile range, 4-10) µg/L in children with diabetes, compared with a median level of 11 (quartile range, 7-15) µg/L in control subjects (p < 0.0001). The median of the individual ratios between cathodal and anodal trypsin(ogen) was 1.4 in the diabetic patients and 1.7 in the control children (p < 0.001). In a multivariate test, however, only the decrease in cathodal trypsin(ogen) concentration was associated with diabetes. The levels of trypsin(ogen)s did not correlate with levels of islet cell antibodies, present in 81% of the diabetic children. Several mechanisms may explain our findings, for example, similar pathogenetic factors may affect both the endocrine and exocrine pancreas simultaneously, a failing local trophic stimulation by insulin on the exocrine cells may decrease the trypsinogen production, and there may be an increased elimination of trypsin(ogen) because of higher filtration through the kidneys in the hyperglycemic state.

  • Indications that branched chain amino acids, in addition to glucagon, affect the glomerular filtration rate after a high protein diet in insulin-dependent diabetes
  • 1991
  • Ingår i: Diabetes research. - Edinburgh, Scotland : Teviot-Kimpton Publications. - 0265-5985. ; 16:3, s. 101-109
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Hormonal changes and whole blood free amino acid levels and their relation to renal function were measured in 12 insulin-dependent diabetic patients after two 10-day periods with a diet consisting of 10% and 20% respectively of the energy as protein. The patients were 15-21 years old and mean duration of diabetes was 12 (5-20) years. Glomerular filtration rate, renal plasma flow, and albumin excretion rate were measured together with plasma concentrations of glucagon, growth hormone, insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), somatostatin, serum insulin and free amino acids in blood. Glomerular filtration rate was 123 +/- 3 ml/min/1.73 m2 on high protein diet and 113 +/- 3 ml/min/1.73 m2 on low protein diet (p = 0.02). Renal plasma flow was unchanged. Glucagon, IGF-1, branch chained amino acids (BCAA), tyrosine, phenylalanine, lysine, and methionine were increased after the high protein diet. Growth hormone, somatostatin, insulin, and other amino acids remained unchanged. The increase in glomerular filtration rate was significantly correlated to the increase in glucagon, isoleucine, and valine (glucagon r = 0.71, p = 0.01, isoleucine r = 0.59, p = 0.04, valine r = 0.62, p = 0.03). In a multiple regression model the increase in glomerular filtration correlated most strongly to the increase in isoleucine, followed by valine and glucagon. Together these variables explained 88% of the total variance of the change in glomerular filtration rate (r2 = 0.88, p = 0.001). Albumin excretion rate was correlated to IGF-1 (r = 0.86, p < 0.001) on the high protein diet. The regulation of GFR seems to depend on a combined effect of BCCA and glucagon, whereas microalbuminuria seems to be related to IGF-1.

  • Dust Measurements During Galileo's Approach to Jupiter and Io Encounter
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Science. - : American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). - 1095-9203 .- 0036-8075. ; 274:5286, s. 399-401
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • About a hundred dust impacts per day were detected during the first week in December 1995 by Galileo during its approach to Jupiter. These impacts were caused by submicrometer-sized particles that were just above the detection limit. After the closest approach to Io on 7 December, impacts of these small particles ceased. This effect is expected for dust grains emitted from Io that exit the field of view of the instrument after the flyby. The impact rate of bigger micrometer-sized dust grains continued to increase toward Jupiter. These dust particles are in orbit about Jupiter or are interplanetary grains that are gravitationally concentrated near Jupiter.

  • Dust measurements in the Jovian magnetosphere
  • 1997
  • Ingår i: Geophysical Research Letters. - 1944-8007. ; 24:17, s. 2171-2174
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Dust measurements have been obtained with the dust detector onboard the Galileo spacecraft inside a distance of about 60RJ from Jupiter (Jupiter radius, RJ = 71,492 km) during two periods of about 8 days around Galileo's closest approaches to Ganymede on 27 June and on 6 Sept 1996. The impact rate of submicrometer-sized particles fluctuated by a factor of several hundred with a period of about 10 hours, implying that their trajectories are strongly affected by the interaction with the Jovian magnetic field. Concentrations of small dust impacts were detected at the times of Ganymede closest approaches that could be secondary ejecta particles generated upon impact of other particles onto Ganymede's surface. Micrometer-sized dust particles, which could be on bound orbits about Jupiter, are concentrated in the inner Jovian system inside about 20RJ from Jupiter.

  • Galileo observes electromagnetically coupled dust in the Jovian magnetosphere
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Journal of Geophysical Research. - 2156-2202. ; 103:E9, s. 20011-20022
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Measurements of dust coupled to the Jovian magnetosphere have been obtained with the dust detector on board the Galileo spacecraft. We report on data obtained during the first four orbits about Jupiter that had flybys of the Galilean satellites: Ganymede (orbits 1 and 2), Callisto (orbit 3), and Europa (orbit 4). The most prominent features observed are highly time variable dust streams recorded throughout the Jovian system. The impact rate varied by up to 2 orders of magnitude with a 5 and 10 hour periodicity, which shows a correlation with Galileo's position relative to the Jovian magnetic field. Around 20 RJ (Jupiter radius, RJ=71, 492 km) in bound a dip in the impact rate has been found consistently. At the same times, reversals by 180° in impact direction occurred. This behavior can be qualitatively explained by strong coupling of nanometer-sized dust to the Jovian magnetic field. At times of satellite flybys, enhanced rates of dust impacts have been observed, which suggests that all Galilean satellites are sources of ejecta particles. Inside about 20 RJ impacts of micrometer-sized particles have been recorded that could be particles on bound orbits about Jupiter.

  • South-North and Radial Traverses through the Interplanetary Dust Cloud
  • 1997
  • Ingår i: Icarus. - : Elsevier BV. - 0019-1035. ; 129:2, s. 270-288
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Identical in situ dust detectors are flown on board the Galileo and Ulysses spacecraft. They record impacts of micrometeoroids in the ecliptic plane at heliocentric distances from 0.7 to 5.4 AU and in a plane almost perpendicular to the ecliptic from -79 deg to +79 deg ecliptic latitude. The combination of both Ulysses and Galileo measurements yields information about the radial and latitudinal distributions of micron- and sub-micron-sized dust in the Solar System. Two types of dust particles were found to dominate the dust flux in interplanetary space. Interplanetary micrometeoroids covering a wide mass range from 10^-16 to 10^-6 g are recorded mostly inside 3 AU and at latitudes below 30 deg. Interstellar grains with masses between 10^-14 and 10^-12 g have been positively identified outside 3 AU near the ecliptic plane and outside 1.8 AU at high ecliptic latitudes (>50 deg). Interstellar grains move on hyperbolic trajectories through the planetary system and constitute the dominant dust flux (1.5 x 10^-4 m^-2 sec^-1) in the outer Solar System and at high ecliptic latitudes. To compare and analyze the Galileo and Ulysses data sets, a new model is developed based on J. Geophys. Res. 98, 17029-17048, Divine's (1993, ``five populations of interplanetary meteoroids'' model. Both models describe the interplanetary meteoroid environment in terms of dust populations on distinct orbits. Taking into account the measured velocities and the effect of radiation pressure on small particles (described by the ratio of radiation pressure force to gravity, beta), we define four populations of meteoroids on elliptical orbits and one population on hyperbolic orbit that can fit the micrometeoroid flux observed by Galileo and Ulysses. Micrometeoroids with masses greater than 10^-10 g and negligible radiation pressure (beta = 0) orbit the Sun on low to moderately eccentric orbits and with low inclinations (<=30 deg). Populations of smaller particles with mean masses of 10^-11 g (beta = 0.3), 10^-13 g (beta = 0.8), and 5 x 10^-15 g (beta = 0.3), respectively, have components with high eccentricities and have increasingly wider inclination distributions with decreasing mass. Similarities among the orbit distributions of the small particle populations on bound orbits suggest that all are genetically related and are part of an overall micrometeoroid complex that prevails in the inner Solar System. The high-eccentricity component of the small particle populations may actually be beta-meteoroids which are not well characterized by our measurements. Our modeling suggests further that the interstellar dust flux is not reduced at Ulysses' perihelion distance (1.3 AU) and that it contributes about 30% of the total dust flux observed there.

  • Three years of Galileo dust data. II. 1993-1995
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Planetary and Space Science. - 1873-5088. ; 47:1-2, s. 85-106
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Between January 1993 - December 1995, the Galileo spacecraft traversed the interplanetary space between Earth and Jupiter and arrived at Jupiter on 7 December 1995. The dust instrument onboard the spacecraft was operating during most of the time and data from the instrument were obtained via memory readouts which occurred at rates between twice per day and once per week. All events were classified by an onboard program into 24 categories. Noise events were usually restricted to the lowest categories (class 0). During Galileo's passage through Jupiter's radiation belts on 7 December 1995, several of the higher categories (classes 1 and 2) also show evidence for contamination by noise. The highest categories (class 3) were noise-free all the time. A relatively constant impact rate of interplanetary and interstellar (big) particles of 0.4 impacts per day was detected over the whole three-year time span. In the outer solar system (outside about 2.6 AU) they are mostly of interstellar origin, whereas in the inner solar system they are mostly interplanetary particles. Within about 1.7 AU from Jupiter intense streams of small dust particles were detected with impact rates of up to 20,000 per day whose impact directions are compatible with a Jovian origin. Two different populations of dust particles were detected in the Jovian magnetosphere: small stream particles during Galileo's approach to the planet and big particles concentrated closer to Jupiter between the Galilean satellites. Information about 2883 particles detected by the dust instrument during Galileo's six-year journey to Jupiter is now available.

    • The Ulysses spacecraft is orbiting the Sun on a highly inclined ellipse (i = 79°). After its Jupiter flyby in 1992 at a heliocentric distance of 5.4 AU, the spacecraftreapproached the inner solar system, flew over the Suns south polar region in September 1994,crossed the ecliptic plane at a distance of 1.3 AU in March 1995, and flew over the Suns northpolar region in July 1995. We report on dust impact data obtained with the dust detector onboardUlysses between January 1993 and December 1995. We publish and analyse the complete dataset of 509 recorded impacts of dust particles with masses between 10-16 g-10-7 g. Together with 968 dust impacts from launch until the end of 1992 published earlier ([Gruuml;n et al., 1995c]), information about 1477 particles detected with theUlysses sensor between October 1990 and December 1995 is now available. The impact ratemeasured between 1993 and 1995 stayed relatively constant at about 0.4 impacts per day andvaried by less than a factor of ten. Most of the impacts recorded outside about 3.5 AU arecompatible with particles of interstellar origin. Two populations of interplanetary particles havebeen recognized: big micrometer-sized particles close to the ecliptic plane and smallsub-micrometer-sized particles at high ecliptic latitudes. The observed impact rate is comparedwith a model for the flux of interstellar dust particles which gives relatively good agreement withthe observed impact rate. No change in the instruments noise characteristics or degradation of thechanneltron could be revealed during the three-year period.

  • Age and sex are important factors in determining normal retinol levels
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Journal of Tropical Pediatrics. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 1465-3664 .- 0142-6338. ; 44:2, s. 96-99
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cut-off levels for serum retinol levels of 20 micrograms/dl for marginal and 10 micrograms/dl for definite deficiency have been advocated and extensively used in population studies. However, the blood serum levels of retinol of the newborn are known to be very low and although the age dependency of the retinol binding protein has been described, the normal levels of serum retinol at different ages have not been reported from larger series. While studying poor populations of young infants in Lahore, Pakistan, we thought it necessary to try to achieve appropriate reference values by analysing the levels of serum retinol of expatriates from the Indian subcontinent who live in the affluent United Arab Emirates, where retinol deficiency is not seen either at the hospital or the community levels. We have studied material, cord blood, infantile and adult levels of retinol and found a highly significant age relationship of serum retinol levels. During very early infancy the 'normal' mean is below what has been considered deficiency. This is new information and important in the evaluation of retinol status of individuals as well as populations. In addition, we found lower levels in women, pregnant or non-pregnant, than those in adult men. This sex difference in adults was not seen in infants. We recommend a cut off level for deficiency of 10 micrograms/dl, but only for those above 1 month of postnatal age.

    • There has been concern about the role of analgesics in the development of renal-cell cancer, although a few studies have reported moderately elevated risks with regular or long-term use. In a large international case-control study of renal-cell cancer we examined, among other hypotheses, the effect of phenacetin-containing and of other types of analgesics: paracetamol (acetaminophen), salicylates (mainly aspirin) and pyrazolones (e.g., antipyrine or phenazone). Relative risks, adjusted for the effects of age, sex, body-mass index, tobacco smoking and study centre, were not significantly increased with intake of phenacetin, either when lifetime consumption was categorized at the level of > or = 0.1 kg or when subjects were subdivided further by amount. Nor were paracetamol, salicylates or pyrazolones linked with renal-cell cancer. No consistently increasing risks with consumption level was found. The lack of association was not altered by restricting analgesic use to that which occurred 5 or 10 years before the defined "cut-off" date or when analysis was restricted to exclusive users of a particular type of analgesic. Neither was the risk influenced by the rate of consumption or whether the consumption had occurred at a young age. Our study provides clear evidence that aspirin is unrelated to renal-cell cancer risk, and our findings do not support the hypothesis that analgesics containing phenacetin or paracetamol increase the risk, although the number of "regular" users and the amount of these types of analgesic consumed were too small to confidently rule out a minor carcinogenic effect of phenacetin and paracetamol.

  • Ingår i: International Journal of Cancer. - New York, USA : John Wiley & Sons. - 0020-7136 .- 1097-0215. ; 63:2, s. 216-221
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Risk of renal-cell cancer in relation to use of diuretics, other anti-hypertensive medications and hypertension was assessed in a multi-center, population-based, case-control study conducted in Australia, Denmark, Germany, Sweden and the United States, using a shared protocol and questionnaire. A total of 1,732 histologically confirmed cases and 2,309 controls, frequency-matched to cases by age and sex, were interviewed. The association between renal-cell cancer and the drugs was estimated by relative risks (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Risks were increased among users of diuretics and other anti-hypertensive medications. After adjustment for hypertension, risk for diuretics was reduced to unity, except among long-term (15+ years) users. Risk for use of non-diuretic anti-hypertensive drugs remained significantly elevated and increased further with duration of use. Overall risk was not enhanced when both classes of medications were used. Excess risk was not restricted to any specific type of diuretic or anti-hypertensive drug and no trend was observed with estimated lifetime consumption of any particular type of product. The RR for hypertension after adjustment for diuretics and other anti-hypertensive medications was 1.4 (95% CI = 1.2-1.7), although among non-users of any anti-hypertensive medications, there was little excess risk associated with a history of hypertension. Exclusion of drug use that first occurred within 5 years of cancer diagnosis or interview did not alter the associations. Our findings suggest small effects on renal-cell cancer risk associated with hypertension and use of diuretics and other anti-hypertensive medications. However, because of potential misclassifications of these highly correlated variables, it is difficult to distinguish the effect of treatment from its indication, hypertension.

  • Ingår i: International Journal of Cancer. - New York, USA : John Wiley & Sons. - 0020-7136 .- 1097-0215. ; 60:3, s. 350-354
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Although numerous studies have identified obesity or high relative weight as a risk factor for renal-cell cancer in women, the degree to which this effect is present in men remains unclear. A multicenter population-based case-control study concerning incident cases of histologically verified renal-cell cancer (n = 1,732) and age- and sex-matched controls (n = 2,309) was conducted in Australia, Denmark, Germany (2 centers), Sweden and the United States. Relative weight was estimated by the body mass index, and the association between this factor and other factors, such as height, physical activity and use of amphetamines, was measured by the relative risk estimated in logistic regression models. Body mass index was found to be a risk factor among women and, to a lesser extent, among men. A 3-fold increased risk (RR = 3.6, 95% CI = 2.3-5.7) was observed for women with a relative weight in the top 5% compared with those in the lowest quartile. Rate of weight change (estimated as weight change per annum in kilograms) appeared to be an independent risk factor among women but not among men. Physical activity and height were unrelated to risk of renal-cell cancer regardless of level of BMI, while use of amphetamines was associated with an increased risk among men, although no dose or duration effect was seen. Our findings verify the link between high relative weight and risk of renal-cell cancer, particularly among women. The mechanism that underlies this association is, however, still unclear, although the rate of weight change may play a role.

    • A number of medical conditions have been linked with renal-cell cancer, although the evidence is not consistent in every case. In a large international case-control study of renal-cell cancer, we examined, among other hypotheses, associations with a personal history of certain medical conditions and a family history of cancer of the kidney or thyroid. Relative risks (RR), adjusted for the effects of age, gender, body-mass index, tobacco smoking and study centre, were significantly increased by a history of kidney stones or thyroid or kidney disease. The RR were not altered by additional adjustment for hypertension, or when diagnoses were restricted to those made at least 5 or 10 years before 1987 (the usual "cut-off" date). The link with kidney injury is particularly likely to be affected by recall bias. Increased RR of borderline significance were found for kidney infection (RR, 1.2) and diabetes (RR, 1.4). Having one first-degree relative with kidney cancer was associated with a significantly increased risk of renal-cell cancer (RR, 1.6; 95% Cl, 1.1-2.4). Seven cases reported 2 first-degree relatives with kidney cancer. No controls had first-degree relatives with kidney cancer. None of our participants reported having von Hippel-Lindau disease. The data suggests that a few conditions of the kidney are strongly associated with renal-cell cancer and that heredity plays a role in a small proportion of cases.

    • We investigated the role of diet in the etiology of renal cell cancer (RCC) in a multi-center, population-based case-control study conducted in Australia, Denmark, Sweden and the United States, using a shared protocol. A total of 1,185 incident histopathologically confirmed cases (698 men, 487 women) and 1,526 controls (915 men, 611 women) frequency-matched to cases by sex and age were included in the analyses. The association between RCC and diet was estimated by relative risks (RR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) adjusted for age, sex, study center, body mass index and smoking. A statistically significant positive association was observed for total energy intake (RR = 1.7, 95% CI = 1.4-2.2 for the highest vs. lowest quartile, p value for trend < 0.00001), while the hypothesis that protein and fat are risk factors independent of energy was not supported. Fried meats were associated with increased RCC risk, while vegetables and fruits were protective, with the strongest effect observed for the highest quartile of consumption of orange/dark green vegetables but not vitamin C or beta carotene. Increased risk was associated with low intake (lowest decile) of vitamin E and magnesium. We observed an apparent protective effect of alcohol confined to women and probably due to chance. Our findings indicate an important role of nutrition in the development of RCC. The apparent positive association of energy intake with risk of RCC needs further investigation in a prospective cohort study to exclude the possible impact of differences in recall between cases and controls.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Micro and nano-satellites are important tools to explore and test new ideas and various new devices for space missions without spending extreme amounts of money. The actual launch cost per kilogram payload on a micro or nano-satellite can be as high or even higher than ordinary satellites but the turn around time and quick responses are extremely important. The HUGIN project is a nano-satellite (less than 10 kg) explicitly designed to test magnetic coils and adaptive artificial neural network (ANN) algorithms for attitude control purposes. A small PC video camera is also included and if the control function is successful then also tests of adaptive image processing using other ANN and biologically inspired methods will be performed.

  • Risk of urinary tract cancers following kidney or ureter stones
  • 1997
  • Ingår i: Journal of the National Cancer Institute. - Oxford, United Kingdom : Oxford University Press. - 0027-8874 .- 1460-2105. ; 89:19, s. 1453-1457
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: A relationship has been suggested between kidney or ureter stones and the development of urinary tract cancers. In this study, a population-based cohort of patients hospitalized for kidney or ureter stones in Sweden was followed for up to 25 years to examine subsequent risks for developing renal cell, renal pelvis/ureter, or bladder cancer. Methods: Data from the national Swedish In-patient Register and the national Swedish Cancer Registry were linked to follow 61,144 patients who were hospitalized for kidney or ureter stones from 1965 through 1983. Standardized incidence ratios (SIRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were computed on the basis of nationwide cancer incidence rates, after adjustment for age, sex, and calendar year. Results: Risk of renal cell cancer was not elevated in this cohort. Significant excesses of renal pelvis/ureter cancer (SIR = 2.5; 95% CI = 1.8-3.3) and bladder cancer (SIR = 1.4; 95% CI = 1.3-1.6) were observed, but the SIRs for women were more than twice those for men. Risks varied little by age or duration of follow-up. Risks of renal pelvis/ureter cancer and bladder cancer among patients with an associated diagnosis of urinary tract infection were more than double those among patients without such infection, although the risks were significantly elevated in both groups. Conclusions: Individuals hospitalized for kidney or ureter stones are at increased risk of developing renal pelvis/ureter or bladder cancer, even beyond 10 years of follow-up. Chronic irritation and infection may play a role, since kidney or ureter stones were located on the same side of the body as the tumors in most patients with renal pelvis/ureter cancer evaluated in our study.

    • High-spin states of 174Os have been investigated by means of the (Nd(S, 4n)Os)-Nd-146-S-32-Os-174 reaction using the ESSA30 multidetector system. The decay is dominated by the ground-state positive-parity band, two negative-parity 4- and 5- bands and another band starting at spin 9. Deformed shell-model calculations have been carried out to interpret the observed band structures. The role of the strongly shape-driving, non-aligned, pi-h9/2 configuration in the low-spin region of the ground-state band is discussed. The first band crossing is interpreted as due to the nu-i13/2 alignment. The two lowest side-bands are understood in terms of coupling to octupole excitations.

  • Early attachment of leucocytes, platelets and fibrinogen in endothelial cell-seeded Dacron venous conduits
  • 1997
  • Ingår i: British Journal of Surgery. - 1365-2168. ; 84:1, s. 52-57
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: There is a need for prosthetic venous conduits in surgery for trauma, cancer and thrombotic disease. Such conduits in use today have a low patency rate, leaving room for much improvement. METHODS: This experimental study investigated the dynamics of the early attachment of radiolabelled platelets, leucocytes and fibrinogen to endothelial cell-seeded Dacron venous conduits in sheep. Grafts were placed as jugular vein interposition grafts, seeded on one side, not seeded on the other, and followed for 4 h. RESULTS: No difference could be demonstrated between the two graft types. Platelets showed an increasing attachment during the whole period, leucocytes an immediate attachment followed by an undulating pattern, and fibrinogen an immediate attachment with a tendency to decrease. Measurements on the vein itself showed a high attachment and, for platelets, an extremely high attachment when measured after the graft in the direction of flow. CONCLUSION: The seeding process did not seem to affect early thrombogenicity. The carefully dissected vein wall showed highly thrombogenic properties, in many ways as high as in the prosthetic graft.

    • High Spin states in 106Cd were populated by the reactions Zr-94(O-17, 5n) and Ge(S-32, 4n) at 80 MeV and at 148 MeV, respectively. The gamma-decay was studied by gamma-spectroscopic methods using the Nordball multi-detector army. Protons and alpha-particles were detected in particle detector system, thus selecting the neutron channel. The experiment included gamma-ray yields, gammagamma-coincidences and gamma-ray angular relation measurements. Collective bands extending up to spin 26+, 20- and 21-, have been observed in 106Cd. A new lifetime Of 11(-3)+6 ns for the 16+ state at 7118.7 keV has been found. Both total Routhian surfaces and spin diabatic surfaces have been calculated and used for assigning quasiparticle configurations to the bands. The (+, 0) band is assigned as a nuh11/2(2) configuration below I = 16+ and at higher spins suggested to be built on a pig9/2(2)nuh11/2(2) configuration. The large hindrance observed for the decay from the 16+ state supports the latter assignment. With the alignment of the nuh11/12(2) pair the deformation is predicted to change from (epsilon2,gamma) = (0.13,-2-degrees) to (0.17, 4-degrees). The configuration of the negative parity bands is assigned as either a nuh11/2(1)d5/2(1) or a nuh11/2(1)(g7/2xd5/2)1, With (epsilon2, gamma) = (0.14,9-degrees.

  • Identification and sequence of a nifJ-like gene in Rhodospirillum rubrum : partial characterization of a mutant unaffected in nitrogen fixation
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Molecular Microbiology. - : Wiley. - 0950-382X .- 1365-2958. ; 20:3, s. 559-568
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A nifJ-like gene was identified in the photosynthetic purple non-sulphur bacterium Rhodospirillum rubrum. A DNA segment hybridizing to Klebsiella pneumoniae nifJ was isolated, the gene was inactivated, and a mutant strain, SNJ-1, was constructed by allele replacement. The mutation was confirmed by DNA sequencing. Northern blotting and by the lack of pyruvate oxidoreductase activity. This is the first report of a nifJ-like gene in photosynthetic bacteria. Unexpectedly, SNJ-1 was capable of nitrogen fixation, and growth was similar to the wild-type strain under all conditions investigated. Therefore, this is also the first demonstration that a nifJ homologue, when present, is not essential for nitrogen fixation in a diazotroph. The nifJ-like gene was sequenced and found to have considerable similarity to published nifJ gene sequences from other organisms. By primer extension, the initiation site for transcription was located, and a typical sigma 54 promoter sequence was identified.

  • International renal-cell cancer study. V. Reproductive factors, gynecologic operations and exogenous hormones
  • 1995
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Cancer. - Hoboken, USA : John Wiley & Sons. - 0020-7136 .- 1097-0215. ; 61:2, s. 192-198
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The relationships between reproductive factors, exogenous hormones and renal-cell cancer were examined in an international, multicenter, population-based, case-control study undertaken in 1989-1991. Data from 5 centers situated in Australia, Denmark, Germany, Sweden and the United States included for analysis 608 women with renal-cell cancer and 766 female controls. A significant trend in risk (p = 0.002) was associated with number of births, with an 80% excess risk for 6 or more births [RR = 1.8, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.1 to 2.9] compared with one birth. A decreasing risk was seen for increasing age at first birth, although this was confounded by body-mass index and number of births. A suggestive reduction of risk was also seen for increasing age at menarche. Age at menopause was unrelated to risk of renal-cell cancer. An increased risk was observed for women having had both a hysterectomy and an oophorectomy. Use of oral contraceptives in non-smoking women reduced the risk of renal-cell cancer (RR = 0.5, 95% CI = 0.4 to 0.8); this reduction increased with longer duration of use. No association was observed for estrogen replacement therapy. Our results indicate that certain hormonal and reproductive variables may be related to risk of renal-cell cancer and deserve further investigation, both epidemiologically and experimentally.
