  • Clusters as probes of distance, evolution, and chemistry of galaxies
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering. - : SPIE. - 1996-756X .- 0277-786X. ; 5382:1, s. 47-56
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Stellar clusters are highly useful as tools for determination of distances, ages and abundances of heavy elements of galaxies, also at larger distances. Their utility for these purposes has, so far, been severely limited, mainly due to image crowding. The introduction of Extremely Large Telescopes (ELTs) with full adaptive optics (AO) and near diffraction limited performance should imply a drastic improvement concerning the usefulness of clusters and the limiting distances of high quality data. We have made a study of stellar clusters as probes of distance, evolution and chemistry of galaxies at distances from one to twenty Mpc. From data on the Stromgren uvby system, partly from direct measurements taken from the literature, we have synthesized test clusters, one open and one globular, as well as galactic backgrounds. The clusters have been embedded in the backgrounds and located at distances between one and twenty Mpc. Here, vby data have been measured, reduced and analyzed. Color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs), metallicity diagrams (MDs) and luminosity functions (LFs) have been constructed. They have been evaluated absolutely and compared to the corresponding template data. We conclude that with a 50 m AO ELT, for open as well as globular clusters, MDs are of high quality for clusters out to and beyond 5 Mpc and useful out to 10 Mpc. CMDs are of very high quality well beyond 5 Mpc. They are of high scientific value out to and beyond 10 Mpc and valuable for clusters even out to 20 Mpc. LFs are highly informative well beyond 10 Mpc and still rather valuable at 20 Mpc. With sufficient measurement data available, LFs are useful for clusters in galaxies even beyond 20 Mpc

  • Evolution of distant galaxies from cluster photometry: a program for a 50-m ELT

    • The formation, shaping and evolution of galaxies are processes of high interest but poorly known. This is true also for our closest galactic neighbours. Of key importance is a representative sample of all major types of galaxies with solid evolutionary parameters. Stellar clusters are excellent probes of galactic evolution, albeit so far useful at smaller distances only, mainly due to the limiting effects of image crowding. With extremely large telescopes (ELTs) with full adaptive optics (AO) and near diffraction limited performance, the effects of image crowding will be drastically reduced. Thus, the excellence of clusters of stars as evolutionary probes can be extended out to cosmological distances. We have studied this extension. With data on the Str

  • BETEXT : Cross Institutional Cooperation in the Digitalization of Cultural Heritage Documents in XML
  • 2002
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The following describes a digitalization and on-line publication project, led by members of Blekinge Institute of Technology, located in the south of Sweden. The project aimed to create the foundation for a regional network of small cultural institutions that would develop, support and utilize on-line full text archives in the service of tourism, marketing and education. Its pilot project, The Chapman Archive, involved the digitalization, encoding with the TEI DTD in XML and web-publication of two rare 18th century texts of both regional and international importance.

  • Antibodies to human herpesvirus 8 latent and lytic antigens in blood donors and potential high-risk groups in Sweden : variable frequencies found in a multicenter serological study
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Journal of Medical Virology. - 0146-6615 .- 1096-9071. ; 62:4, s. 498-504
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) is a herpesvirus associated with Kaposi's sarcoma (KS). An immunofluorescence assay was used for detection of IgG, IgM, and IgA antibodies against lytic and latent HHV-8 antigens to analyse samples from KS patients (n = 8), healthy blood donors (n = 162), individuals with a high risk sexual behaviour (n = 114), and bone marrow transplant patients (with high risk for bloodborne infections) (n = 34) in Sweden. Of the KS patients, 88% had IgG antibodies to both lytic and latent antigens by immunofluorescence. In all other groups, antilatent antibodies were rare (0-2.6%). IgG antibodies to the lytic antigens were found, by immunofluorescence, in 20% of the blood donors, 31% of the high risk patients, and in 24 and 29% of the bone marrow transplant patients (pre- and post-transplant samples, respectively). For verification of the specificity of the anti-lytic antibodies, 170 of the samples were also tested blindly at different laboratories world-wide with five other assays shown previously to detect HHV-8 antibodies in most KS patients. By using two recombinant HHV-8 proteins (ORF65/vp17 and K8.1/gp 35-37) in ELISA, a whole-virion ELISA and two immunofluorescence assays confirmation of the reactivity against lytic viral antigens was sought. The comparison of the different methods suggested the K8.1 ELISA to be highly specific and also showed a good agreement between two of the immunofluorescence assays. However, generally there was a poor correlation for positive results, indicating the need of further methodological development.

  • Xml for Libraries, Archives, and Museums : The Project Covax
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Applied Artificial Intelligence. - : Taylor & Francis. - 0883-9514 .- 1087-6545. ; 17:8-9, s. 797-816
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of COVAX is to analyze and create the technical solutions required to provide access through the Internet to homogeneously-encoded document descriptions of archive, library, and museum collections based in the application of XML. This paper describes the development of the project, and the main achievements in building an information system of distributed XML databases containing document descriptions from libraries, archives, and museums emphasizing the conversion processes needed to transform legacy data to an XML environment.

  • BMPs in urban stormwater management in Denmark and Sweden
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Linking stormwater BMP designs and performance to receiving water impact mitigation. - Reston, VA : American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). - 0784406022 ; , s. 354-368
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Best Management Practices (BMPs) for control of stormwater runoff include structural elements (structural BMPs) that can be applied on the local scale (e.g. infiltration), the drainage catchment scale (e.g. ponds and treatment, or wetlands) and the receiving water scale (e.g. retrofitting of river reaches), and non-structural BMPs, such as controls of chemicals or building materials, and street sweeping. The available knowledge of stormwater BMPs performance in pollution control is inconsistent and the effect of various BMPs on receiving water quality is either poorly understood, or not known. A review of recent experiences with selected stormwater BMPs in Denmark and Sweden is presented and discussed with respect to the current issues related to legislation and the forces driving future development in stormwater management.
