  • The electric field and wave experiment for the Cluster mission
  • 1997
  • Ingår i: Space Science Reviews. - 0038-6308 .- 1572-9672. ; 79, s. 137-156
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The electric-field and wave experiment (EFW) on Cluster is designed to measure the electric-field and density fluctuations with sampling rates up to 36 000 samples s(-1). Langmuir probe sweeps can also be made to determine the electron density and temperature. The instrument has several important capabilities. These include (1) measurements of quasi-static electric fields of amplitudes lip to 700 mV m(-1) with high amplitude and time resolution, (2) measurements over short periods of time of up to five simualtaneous waveforms (two electric signals and three magnetic signals from the seach coil magnetometer sensors) of a bandwidth of 4 kHz with high time resolution, (3) measurements of density fluctuations in four points with high time resolution. Among the more interesting scientific objectives of the experiment are studies of nonlinear wave phenomena that result in acceleration of plasma as well as large- and small-scale interferometric measurements. By using four spacecraft for large-scale differential measurements and several Langmuir probes on one spacecraft for small-scale interferometry, it will be possible to study motion and shape of plasma structures on a wide range of spatial and temporal scales. This paper describes the primary scientific objectives of the EFW experiment and the technical capabilities of the instrument.

  • Alpha1-microglobulin chromophores are located to three lysine residues semiburied in the lipocalin pocket and associated with a novel lipophilic compound
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Protein Science. - : Wiley. - 0961-8368. ; 8:12, s. 20-2611
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Alpha1-microglobulin (alpha1m) is an electrophoretically heterogeneous plasma protein. It belongs to the lipocalin superfamily, a group of proteins with a three-dimensional (3D) structure that forms an internal hydrophobic ligand-binding pocket. Alpha1m carries a covalently linked unidentified chromophore that gives the protein a characteristic brown color and extremely heterogeneous optical properties. Twenty-one different colored tryptic peptides corresponding to residues 88-94, 118-121, and 122-134 of human alpha1m were purified. In these peptides, the side chains of Lys92, Lys118, and Lys130 carried size heterogeneous, covalently attached, unidentified chromophores with molecular masses between 122 and 282 atomic mass units (amu). In addition, a previously unknown uncolored lipophilic 282 amu compound was found strongly, but noncovalently associated with the colored peptides. Uncolored tryptic peptides containing the same Lys residues were also purified. These peptides did not carry any additional mass (i.e., chromophore) suggesting that only a fraction of the Lys92, Lys118, and Lys130 are modified. The results can explain the size, charge, and optical heterogeneity of alpha1m. A 3D model of alpha1m, based on the structure of rat epididymal retinoic acid-binding protein (ERABP), suggests that Lys92, Lys118, and Lys130 are semiburied near the entrance of the lipocalin pocket. This was supported by the fluorescence spectra of alpha1m under native and denatured conditions, which indicated that the chromophores are buried, or semiburied, in the interior of the protein. In human plasma, approximately 50% of alpha1m is complex bound to IgA. Only the free alpha1m carried colored groups, whereas alpha1m linked to IgA was uncolored.

  • The alpha1-microglobulin/bikunin gene : characterization in mouse and evolution
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Gene. - 0378-1119. ; 234:2, s. 36-329
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The 129Sv mouse gene coding for the alpha1-microglobulin/bikunin precursor has been isolated and characterized. The 11kb long gene contains ten exons, including six 5'-exons coding for alpha1-microglobulin and four 3'-exons encoding bikunin. Exon 7 also codes for the tribasic tetrapeptide RARR which connects the alpha1-microglobulin and bikunin parts. The sixth intron, which separates the alpha1-microglobulin and bikunin encoding parts, was compared in the human, mouse and a fish (plaice) gene. The size of this intron varies considerably, 6.5, 3.3 and 0.1kb in man, mouse and plaice, respectively. In all three genes, this intron contains A/T-rich regions, and retroposon elements are found in the first two genes. This indicates that this sixth intron is an unstable region and a hotspot for recombinational events, supporting the concept that the alpha1-microglobulin and bikunin parts of this gene are assembled from two ancestral genes. Finally, the nonsynonymous nucleotide substitution rate of the gene was determined by comparing coding sequences from ten vertebrate species. The results indicate that the alpha1-microglobulin part of the gene has evolved faster than the bikunin part.

  • Density in the magnetosphere inferred from ISEE 1 spacecraft potential
  • 1997
  • Ingår i: JOURNAL OF GEOPHYSICAL RESEARCH-SPACE PHYSICS. - ROYAL INST TECHNOL,ALFVEN LAB,DIV PLASMA PHYS,S-10044 STOCKHOLM,SWEDEN.. ; 102:A8, s. 17595-17609
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The potential of ISEE 1 spacecraft has been used to derive the plasma density in the magnetosphere and its environment. First, we show that using the equilibrium of currents flowing in and out of a spacecraft, we could numerically derive a relation between the spacecraft potential and the density of the surrounding plasma, After verifying: that this relation was in good agreement with the measurement of the density made by other instruments during selected periods of time, we apply this relation to the spacecraft potential measured continuously from 1977 to 1984 on ISEE 1, An image of the plasma density in the magnetosphere and its environment is obtained as a result, All principal magnetospheric regions are clearly identified: the solar wind with a density around 5 cm(-3) : the magnetosheath with a density around 50 cm(-3), the magnetosphere with a density around 1 cm(-3) the plasma sheet with a density around 0.5 cm(-3), and finally, the more tenuous tail lobes with a density below 0.1 cm(-3), The plasma density was observed slightly higher on the dawnside than on the duskside of the magnetosphere, In addition, the magnetosheath was closer to the Earth on the dawnside than on the duskside, When the magnetic activity increased (recorded by the AE index), the dayside magnetosphere was compressed/eroded by about 1 to 2 R-E, while the plasmasphere/inner magnetosphere became quite irregular and expanded in the dawn-midnight and in the dusk-noon sectors, In addition, during high magnetic activity, the plasma sheet at Y-GSM = 0 was thicker and slightly denser than at low-activity, On the other hand, the flanks of the plasma sheet were thinner and slightly less dense during high-activity than during low-activity.

    • The potential of ISEE 1 spacecraft has been used to derived the plasma density in the magnetosphere and its environment. First we show that using the equilibrium of currents flowing in and out of a spacecraft, we could derive numerically a relation between the spacecraft potential and the density of the surrounding plasma. After verifying that this relation was in good agreement with the measurement of the density made by other instruments during selected periods of time, we apply this relation to the spacecraft potential measured continuously from 1977 to 1984 on ISEE-1. An image of the plasma density in the magnetosphere and its environment is obtained as a result. All principal magnetospheric regions are clearly identified, from the solar wind with a density around 5 cm-3 , the magnetosheath around 50 cm-3, the magnetosphere around 1 cm-3, the plasma sheet around 0.5 cm-3 and finally the more tenuous tail lobes below 0.1 cm-3. The plasma density was observed slightly higher on the dawnside than on the dusk side of the magnetosphere. In addition the magnetosheath was closer to the Earth on the dawnside than on the duskside. When the magnetic activity increased (recorded by the AE index), the dayside magnetosphere was compressed/eroded by about 1 to 2 RE while the plasmasphere/inner magnetosphere became quite irregular and expanded in the dawn-midnight and in the dusk-noon sectors. In addition, during high magnetic activity, the plasmasheet at Ygsm = 0 was thicker and denser than at low activity. On the other hand the flanks of the plasmasheet were thinner and less dense during high activity than during low activity.

  • Outcomes of patients hospitalized after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in relation to sex
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Coronary Artery Disease. - : Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. - 0954-6928 .- 1473-5830. ; 10:7, s. 509-514

    • OBJECTIVE: To describe characteristics and outcomes of patients hospitalized after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in relation to sex. PATIENTS: All patients in the community of Göteborg who between 1980 and 1996 suffered out-of-hospital cardiac arrest and were hospitalized alive. METHODS: We calculated age-adjusted P values. RESULTS: In all 1038 patients were hospitalized alive of whom 29% were women. Women differed from men by being older and there being lower prevalences of previous acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and smoking and a higher prevalence of bronchial asthma among them. They had less commonly received cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) from bystanders (16 versus 25% of cases; P = 0.002) and were less commonly found to be in ventricular fibrillation when the ambulance crew arrived (55 versus 73% of cases; P < 0.0001). They were less commonly judged to have a cardiac etiology behind the arrest (87 versus 92% of cases; P = 0.016). Of women 31.3% could be discharged alive from hospital, compared with 41.8% of men (P = 0.001). While they were in hospital, women were less commonly subjected to exercise tests, coronary angiography, and coronary artery bypass grafting. CONCLUSION: Among patients who suffered out-of-hospital cardiac arrest and were hospitalized alive, women had less commonly received CPR from bystanders, were less commonly found in ventricular fibrillation, less commonly underwent coronary angiography and coronary artery bypass grafting and had a lower survival rate than did men.
