  • Collective Excitations in the Vicinity of N=Z
  • 1999. - 1 SUPPL. 1
  • Ingår i: Proceedings INPC 1998. - 0375-9474. ; 654, s. 659-662
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In our contribution to the INPC98 conference we reported on the experimental investigation of high spin collective states in medium and heavy mass N≈Z nuclei at LNL. The main purpose is to set light on the role of the proton-neutron interaction in the collective behavior of the nucleus. In medium mass N=Z nuclei, in contrast with the stable nuclei, valence protons and neutrons occupy the same orbitals and one may expect a reinforcement of neutron-proton T=0 (np) pairing correlations[1]. In this interesting subject, the medium mass N=Z=36 72Kr has been studied and completely reported in [2]. In this proceedings we will concentrate in unpublished results concerning the onset of collectivity on nearly spherical nuclei in the 100Sn region. In nuclei with Z=50 and Z=49 dipole bands have been found indicating the presence of "Magnetic Rotation" [3].

  • Rotation induced octupole correlations in the neutron-deficient Te-109 nucleus
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters B. - 0370-2693 .- 1873-2445. ; 437:3-4, s. 236-242
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High spin states in the neutron deficient nucleus 109Te have been populated with the 58Ni+54Fe reaction at 220 MeV and investigated through γ-spectroscopy methods at the GASP spectrometer making use of reaction channel selection with the ISIS Si-ball. The level scheme has been extended up to an excitation energy of ≈12.1 MeV. The spins and parities of the observed levels are assigned tentatively supporting the identification of two bands of opposite parity connected by strong dipole transitions inferred to be of E1 character. Octupole correlations in 109Te induced by rotation are suggested as the cause of this effect.

  • SHELL STRUCTURE AND SHAPE COEXISTENCE IN PB-195
  • 1995
  • Ingår i: Physica scripta. T. - 0281-1847. ; T56, s. 245-248
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Pb-195 was investigated utilizing the reactions Dy-164(S-36, 5n)Pb-195 and Dy-164(S-34, 3n)Pb-195 at beam energies of 170 and 160MeV respectively. Two new dipole bands which feed into the yrast 25/2(+) state, were found in Pb-195. The connection between the bands and the spherical states was established and thus spins and energies of the involved collective states were determined. The deformation is understood as mainly due to excitations of protons across the Z = 82 shell gap. The observed backbends are interpreted as alignment of i(13/2) neutrons.

  • Quantitative electroencephalography power and coherence in Alzheimer's disease and mild cognitive impairment
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Dementia (Basel, Switzerland). - : S. Karger AG. - 1013-7424. ; 7:6, s. 314-323
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study the best combination of quantitative electroencephalographic variables (qEEG) for the discrimination of groups with mild to moderate Alzheimer''s disease (AD), mild cognitive impairment and healthy subjects was defined and related to neuropsychological performance. The study population included 18 patients with mild to moderate probable AD, 19 subjects with objective memory disturbances, 17 subjects with subjective memory complaints who did not have clinical evidence of memory disturbance, and 16 healthy controls. AD patients had significantly increased theta and decreased alpha relative power, mean frequency, and temporoparietal coherence. There was no significant difference in the mean frequency in the left temporal region between AD patients and subjects with objective memory disturbances. Temporoparietal coherence appeared as a discriminant variable together with alpha and theta relative power only between AD patients and controls, giving 77.8% sensitivity and 100% specificity. Significant correlations between regional changes in qEEG variables and cognitive functions were found.

  • Clinical diagnosis of frontal lobe dementia and Alzheimer's disease: relation to cerebral perfusion, brain atrophy and electroencephalography
  • 1995
  • Ingår i: Dementia (Basel, Switzerland). - : S. Karger AG. - 1013-7424. ; 6:3, s. 142-147
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The regional cerebral blood flow, brain atrophy, white matter changes and neurophysiologic changes were evaluated in 28 patients with a clinical diagnosis of probable Alzheimer''s disease (AD) and in 8 patients with a clinical diagnosis of frontal lobe dementia (FLD) using single photon emission computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging and electroencephalography (EEG). We found that FLD patients had more severe frontal blood flow reduction and less severe parietal blood flow reduction compared to AD patients. Among patients with mild dementia the EEG changes were less severe in the FLD group. No significant differences were found in white matter changes or in regional atrophy.

  • 1997
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Physics A. - 0375-9474 .- 1873-1554. ; 627:2, s. 239-258
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High-spin states of the isotopes 103,105,107,109In have been investigated using in-beam γ-ray spectroscopic methods. Results from three different experiments are presented. Targets of 54Fe, 50Cr, and 92Mo were bombarded by a 270 and 261 MeV 58Ni beam and by a 95 MeV 19F beam, respectively. Reaction channel separation was achieved with a charged-particle detector array and in the first two experiments also with a 1π neutron detector system. As a result of these experiments the level schemes of 103,105,107,109In were significantly extended. Excited states of these odd-A indium isotopes are discussed within the framework of the nuclear shell model and the hole-core coupling scheme. The systematics of excited states of light odd-A indium isotopes is also discussed.

  • Road characteristics and bicycle accidents
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian journal of social medicine. - : SAGE Publications. - 0300-8037. ; 24:4, s. 293-301
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In Umeá, Sweden, defects in the physical road surface contributed to nearly half of the single bicycle accidents. The total social cost of these injuries to people amount to at least SEK 20 million (SEK 60,000 or about USD 8,500 per accident), which corresponds to the estimated loss of “eight life equivalents a year”. Improved winter maintenance seems to have the greatest injury prevention potential and would probably reduce the number of injuries considerably, whereas improved road quality and modification of kerbs would reduce the most severe injuries. A local traffic safety program should try to prevent road accidents instead of handling the consequences of them. In accordance with Parliament decisions on traffic we would like to see increased investment in measures favoring bicycle traffic, where cycling is seen as a solution, not as a problem.

  • Ingår i: Nuclear Physics A. - : ELSEVIER SCIENCE BV. - 0375-9474 .- 1873-1554. ; 627:1, s. 101-118
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Neutron deficient nuclei close to 100Sn have been studied using the NORDBALL Ge-detector array together with ancillary particle detectors. Evaporation residues from the compound nucleus 108Te were identified with charged particle and neutron detectors. In this paper a considerable extension of the level scheme of the nucleus 102Cd is presented. The strongest cascade of the new level scheme reveals an irregular sequence of dipole transitions above Iπ = 10+ extending up to spin 17. A strongly populated rather regular side band consisting of four quadrupole transitions ranging from spin 9 to spin 17 was also discovered. This band was tentatively assigned negative parity. Shell model calculations were performed and a very good agreement with the experimental results was found. The excited states could successfully be interpreted as neutron particle and proton hole excitations with respect to the doubly closed core 50100Sn50.

  • White matter changes on CT and MRI: an overview of visual rating scales. European Task Force on Age-Related White Matter Changes
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: European neurology. - : S. Karger AG. - 0014-3022 .- 1421-9913. ; 39:2, s. 80-89
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Since the recognition of white matter changes on CT (leukoaraiosis), rating scales for the location and severity of white matter changes have been developed, mainly for research purposes, to investigate factors such as the relation with cognition, risk factors, and pathology. The main purpose of rating scales is to provide scores that can be used in statistical analyses. The development of the NINDS-AIREN criteria for vascular dementia have introduced a new application for these rating scales in investigating and delineating the amount of white matter changes on CT/MRI sufficient to fulfill the criteria. Furthermore, in Alzheimer’s disease, recognition of white matter changes may serve to delineate homogeneous groups and help to identify patients with different symptomatology. We reviewed the existing rating scales for CT and MRI and judged their properties and reliability. The ideal rating scale does not yet exist, but different rating scales may serve different purposes, for which some recommendations are made.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Excited states of 65Ge were populated via the 12C + 58Ni (261 MeV) reaction using the NORDBALL detector array equipped with charged-particle and neutron detector systems for reaction channel separation. On the basis of γγ-coincidence relations and angular distribution ratios a significantly extended level scheme was constructed up to E x = 9 MeV and J π = (33/2−). The low-energy states of the nucleus are discussed in the framework of the interacting boson-fermion model.
