- The clinical data of two patients with Refsum’s disease are presented. All the cardinal symptoms and signs were present. In addition the patients had fingernails which showed peculiar abnormalities. The dietary treatment installed to reduce the phytanic acid accumulation resulted in an unexpected severe weight reduction, rapidly increasing levels of serum phytanic acid and a severe deterioration of the clinical condition. Plasmapheresis was found to be an efficient mode of treating high levels of serum phytanic acid. The patients have been observed for nearly 4 years at changing levels of serum phytanic acid. It is our opinion that a causal relationship exists between the phytanic acid accumulation and, at least, the signs of polyneuropathy.

- Describes use of the quantum-beat method to study hyperfine structure in the 5 2 P 3/2 and 6 2 P 3/2 states of 23 Na. A pulsed dye laser, frequency-doubled into the UV region, was used to excite sodium atoms abruptly in a beam. The fluorescent light was recorded with a fast transient digitiser, interfaced to a micro-computer. Theoretical calculations using many-body perturbation theory were performed for the entire P sequence measured so far, taking polarisation and correlation effects into account separately. Very good agreement between experimental and theoretical values was obtained.

- In unanaesthetized spinal cats a systematic microelectrode exploration has been made in the lumbosacral spinal cord in order to find interneurones that may transmit the late longlasting reflex effects that volleys in the FRA (flexor reflex afferents) evoke after an intravenous injection of DOPA. Interneurones that may transmit these late effects are found in the lateral part of Rexed's layer VII and three main types are identified: A) cells activated from the ipsilateral FRA and inhibited from the contralateral FRA, B) cells activated from the contralateral FRA and inhibited from the ipsilateral FRA, C) cells activated from both the ipsilateral and contralateral FRA. The receptive fields and other criteria employed suggest that type A and B transmit excitatory action to flexor and extensor motoneurones respectively, and type C depolatization to Ia afferent terminals. The functional organization of these pathways is discussed mainly in relation to the mechanisms responsible for the long latency and duration of the discharge. © 1967 Scandinavian Physiological Society

- Provided that the one-dimensional wave equation applies, strain measurement at two sections of a linearly elastic cylindrical rod makes it possible to determine a number of important quantities at an arbitrary section of the rod; for example, strain, particle velocity and power transmission. The equations needed are derived, and the design of an analogue real-time analyzer is presented. The influence of some principal sources of error is analyzed and it is shown that it should be possible to perform accurate evaluation (errors less than a few percent) during a time interval which is not very long compared to the travelling time for a wave between the two gage positions. Comparisons are made between direct measurement and digital evaluation of strain, and between digital and analogue evaluation of particle velocity and power transmission. The discrepancies are typically less than ten percent during a time interval of 20 travelling times between gages. Although these results do not represent what is achievable, the accuracy is sufficient in several applications and demonstrates the feasibility of the method used.

- The hyperfine structure for the 6, 7 and 8 2 S 1/2 states of 23 Na was measured by optical double-resonance techniques. The states were populated by step-wise excitation using two CW dye lasers. For the dipole interaction constant a, a(6 2 S 1/2 ) = 37.5(2) MHz, a(7 2 S 1/2 )=20.9(1) MHz, a(8 2 S 1/2 )=12.85(10) MHz. were obtained. Theoretical calculations of the hyperfine structure were performed for the 3-8 2 S 1/2 states using many-body perturbation techniques. When polarization as well as certain correlation effects are included in the calculation, an agreement with the experimental values within 2% is obtained.
