    • The ATLAS Inner Detector consists of three sub-systems, the Pixel Detector at the innermost radius, the Semi-Conductor Tracker at intermediate radii, and the Transition Radiation Tracker (TRT) at the outermost radius in front of the electromagnetic calorimeter. The TRT provides a combination of continuous tracking with many projective measurements based on individual drift-tubes (or straws) and of electron identification based on radiator fibres or foils interleaved between the straws themselves. This paper describes the current status of design and construction of the various components of the TRT: the assembly of the barrel modules has recently been completed, that of the end-cap wheels is well underway, and the on-detector front-end electronics is in production. The detector modules and front-end electronics boards will be integrated together over the next year, the barrel and end-cap TRT parts will be assembled and tested with their SCT counterparts during 2005 and installation and commissioning in the ATLAS pit will take place at the end of 2005 and the beginning of 2006.     • Background: Colonic nitric oxide (NO) production in collagenous colitis (CC) has been studied in a small number of patients and found increased. The cellular source of NO is believed to be the colonic epithelial cells. The aim of this study was to investigate colonic NO levels in patients with CC and lymphocytic colitis (LC), to compare with the histopathological status and with the clinical activity, and to assess the epithelial expression of inducible and endothelial nitric oxide synthase (iNOS and eNOS).Methods: We included 19 patients with CC, 8 patients with LC and 15 controls. During colonoscopy, luminal gas was sampled and NO levels were measured using the chemiluminescence technique. Mucosal biopsies were obtained for routine histopathologic examination and immunohistochemical studies of iNOS and eNOS. Clinical activity, as measured by the mean frequency of daily bowel movements during the week prior to colonoscopy, was assessed.Results: Luminal NO levels, median (25-75 percentiles), in the patients with CC and LC were greatly increased compared to the controls, 1673 (145-8143) parts per billion (ppb) and 1838 (1065-2694) ppb versus 28 (20-46) ppb (P < 0.005, both). A positive association was seen between NO levels and histopathological status as well as clinical activity. Strong expression of iNOS was seen in the surface epithelium in 5 of 6 patients with CC and in 2 of 5 patients with LC.Conclusions: The fact that luminal NO levels are related to histopathological status and correlate with clinical activity indicates that NO is involved in the pathophysiology of CC and LC. The epithelial cells are the most likely source of luminal NO.

    • BACKGROUND: Endotoxin is a major stimulus for triggering the host response in septicaemia. The pathophysiology of sepsis involves activation of the vascular endothelium and leukocytes, resulting in the release of various mediators, e.g. cytokines, nitric oxide (NO), endothelin (ET-1) and complement factors. We evaluated the blood levels of complement activation, ET-1 and neuropeptide Y (NPY) in parallel with the haemodynamic and oxygen transport response during human experimental endotoxemia. METHODS: Eleven healthy men had venous, arterial and pulmonary arterial catheters placed for continuous haemodynamic measuring. After 30 min rest endotoxin (E. Coli 4 ng kg(-1), Lot G1) was intravenously administered. Blood samples from pulmonary and arterial catheters were collected hourly over 4 h. RESULTS: Body temperature augmented significantly from baseline values (36.7 +/- 0.7 degrees C, mean +/- SEM) with a maximum after 3.5 h (39.1 +/- 0.3 degrees C, P < 0.001). Cardiac output increased by 100%, systemic vascular resistance decreased by 50%, the oxygen consumption and the tissue oxygen transport increased. Activation of the complement system was indicated by an increase in SC5b-9. Endothelin-1-like immunoreactivity (ET-1-LI) increased over time in arterial blood. NPY-like immunoreactivity (NPY-LI) did not change over time. CONCLUSION: A dose of endotoxin associated with reproducible systemic vasodilation and fever in healthy subjects causes complement activation and increased systemic levels of ET-1-LI, illustrating that the model is a useful tool for inducing moderate systemic inflammation where several mediator systems are activated.

    • A summary of the aging and material validation studies carried out for the ATLAS Transition Radiation Tracker (TRT) is presented. Particular emphasis is put on the different phenomena observed in straw tubes operating with the chosen Xe/CF4/CO2 mixture. The most serious effects observed are silicon deposition on the anode wire and damage of the anode wire gold plating. Etching phenomena and active radical effects are also discussed. With a careful choice of all materials and components, and with good control of the water contamination in the active gas, the ATLAS TRT will operate reliably for 10 years at the LHC design luminosity. To demonstrate this fully, more work is still needed on the gas system purification elements, in particular to understand their interplay with the active species containing fluorine created in the avalanche process under irradiation.

    • Nitrite may be generated by bacteria in urine during urinary tract infections. Acidification of nitrite results in the formation of nitric oxide (NO) and other reactive nitrogen oxides, which are toxic to a variety of microorganisms. We have studied NO formation and bacterial growth in mildly acidified human urine containing nitrite and the reducing agent vitamin C. Urine collected from healthy subjects was incubated in closed syringes at different pH values with varying amounts of nitrite and/or ascorbic acid added. NO generation was measured in headspace gas using a chemiluminescence technique. A similar setup was also used to study the growth of three strains of bacteria in urine. Mildly acidified nitrite-containing urine generated large amounts of NO and this production was greatly potentiated by ascorbic acid. The growth of Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus saprophyticus was markedly reduced by the addition of nitrite to acidified urine. This inhibition was enhanced by ascorbic acid. In conclusion, we show that the growth of three common urinary pathogens is markedly inhibited in mildly acidified urine when nitrite is present. The bacteriostatic effect of acidified nitrite is likely related to the release of NO and other toxic reactive nitrogen intermediates. These results may help to explain the well-known beneficial effects of urinary acidification with, e.g., vitamin C in treatment and prevention of urinary tract infection.

  • The impact of income: assessing the relationship between income and health in Sweden

    • Aims: This paper explores the relationship between income and health among adults in Sweden. An analysis was made as to what extent the association differs when one studies individual earnings and equivalent disposable income, as well as gender differentials. Further, a study was undertaken to investigate how, and by what magnitude, the income - health relationship changes when one controls for other structural factors, such as education and class. Finally the functional form of the relationship was scrutinized, because of its obvious policy impact. Methods: Data came from the 1996-97 Swedish Living Condition Surveys, which include individuals aged 25 - 64 (n=7,201). Logistic regression was used, including various polynomial terms of the income variable. Results: The results show that both earnings and disposable household income are strongly related to health, a finding that holds for both women and men. The strength of the association becomes somewhat weaker when one controls for other structural factors, but in the final model the association is in fact about the same as the bivariate association, owing to the impact of age. Moreover, a curvilinear association was revealed by the authors' analyses. Conclusions: A clear association was found between income and health, also when other structural variables are controlled for. This indicates that income, as such, is of great importance for the risk of illness. The shape of the association between income and health is consistent with earlier debates concerning the relation between income distribution and population health indicators, and, as such, indicates that income-equalizing policies may have an impact on health.

    • We present the FERRUM Project, an international collaboration aiming at a production and evaluation of oscillator strengths (transition probabilities) of selected spectral lines of singly ionized iron group elements, that are of astrophysical relevance. The results obtained include measurements and calculations of permitted and forbidden lines of Fe II. The data have been applied to both emission and absorption lines in astrophysical spectra. We make comparisons between experimental, theoretical and astrophysical f-values. We give a general review of the various measurements, and discuss the UV8 multiplet of Fe II around 1610 Šin detail.
