  • Regional effects of military base closures : the case of Sweden
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Defence and Peace Economics. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1024-2694 .- 1476-8267. ; 18:1, s. 87-97
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this paper is to investigate regional effects of military base closures in Sweden during the last decades. Our analysis is based on a regional growth model, where two equations are estimated; one equation describing the average income growth rate and one equation describing the net migration rate. The data set is a panel of 31 Swedish municipalities covering the period 1983-1998. Our main finding is that a closure of a military base has not had any significant impact on the subsequent average income growth rate nor the net migration rate in the affected municipalities. One potential explanation for these results relates to the labor market and the composition of the labor force.

  • Regional Effects of Military Closures : The case of Sweden
  • 2005
  • Rapport (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • This paper concerns the effects of military closures on the local growth pattern in Sweden during the last decades. The main issue is to analyze to what extent the closures have affected the subsequent average income growth and net migration rates at the local level. The analysis is based on a data set covering Swedish municipalities with military bases during the period 1983-1998. Our main finding is that the closures have not had any significant impact on the subsequent income growth rate or the net migration rate in the affected minicipalities compared to other municipilaties. However, in accordance with previous studies based on Swedish data, we find the initial endowment of human capital to have a positive impact on the subsequent growth rate.

  • A novel software defined research receiver architecture
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 13th IAIN World Congress. - : Nordic Institute of Navigation.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Software defined receivers (SDR) are an increasingly important tool within the GNSS research community as the high level of flexibility offer a significant advantage over traditional hardware implementations. Over the last decade, software receivers have been used to investigate techniques as diverse as bi-static radar (additional correlators), multipath mitigation techniques, GPS/INS integration and array processing.Mentioned above are only a few examples of features that could be required of an SDR, other include support for new signals (Galileo, GPS L5), multiple data file formats, high sensitivity and support for very long data sets. The large number of available features should ideally be coupled with program simplicity (such that other people can understand the program) and efficiency. This paper discusses these issues and proposes several solutions such asgeneralized data buffers (that is trivial to extend for new data formats) and a unified tracking structure (regardless of signal modulation). Examples are given using a Matlab implementation based on the Borre/Akos book Ä Software-Defined GPS and Galileo Receiver", however with significant modifications. Where critical, Java is used to increase performance while maintaining cross platform compatibility. Near real-time operation is available under optimal circumstances and the receiver currently supports GPS C/A- and GPS P-code signals.

  • Post-processing dynamic GNSS antenna array calibration and deterministic beamforming
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 21th International Technical Meeting of the Satellite Division of the Institute of Navigation. ; , s. 1311-1319
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An array processing GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) receiver may provide increased accuracy, reliability and integrity by forming beams towards satellites and nulls towards interference or reflective surfaces. Also, software defined receivers have proven themselves versatile and provide a convenient environment to implement novel algorithms. This paper first describes the gain/phase calibration of a seven element custom array antenna and proceeds to compare the single antenna performance to that of the performance attained by forming beams towards the satellites. IF (Intermediate Frequency) data, high rate samples representing the received signal in a narrow band around the GPS L1 frequency, from an array antenna have been recorded both in an environment with open sky conditions and also in more challenging areas (central Boulder, Colorado). Simultaneously, data from a high quality GPS based INS was recorded in order to obtain accurate estimates of position/ orientation. Calibration of the system (including antennas and front-ends) was performed using data from the benign environment, and based on this information, deterministic beams were formed towards the satellites using data from the semi-urban dataset. The single antenna accuracy was then compared to the position obtained by processing after forming beams.

  • The effects of PACS on radiographer’s work practice
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Radiography. - London : W.B. Saunders Co. Ltd.. ; 13:3, s. 235-240
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper identifies and analyses the effects of picture archiving and communica- tion systems (PACS) on radiographers’ work practice. It shows that the introduction of PACS did not simply entail the transfer of data and information from the analogue world to the digital world, but it also led to the introduction of new ways of communicating, and new activities and responsibilities on the part of radiography staff. Radiographers are called upon to work increasingly independently, and individual practitioners require higher levels of professional expertise. In all, this paper demonstrates that new technical solutions sometimes lead to sub- stantial changes in responsibilities in work. In this example, the radiographers’ work practice has become more highly scientific and they are enjoying a higher level of prestige.

  • Measurement of methane content in upgraded biogas using pulse-echo ultrasound
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the International Congress on Ultrasonics.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we present an ultrasonic pulseecho technique for estimating the methane (CH4) content in binary mixtures of CH4 and carbon dioxide (CO2). The method is based on parametric estimation of phase velocity and frequency dependent attenuation in combination with Partial Least-Squares Regression (PLSR). The technique is verified using experiments on mixtures with a volume fraction of CO2 in the range of 0 % -10 %. The experiments show that the CH4 content can be accurately estimated with high repeatability.

  • TARP Promoter-Based Prostate Cancer Gene Therapy : From Development to Application
  • 2005
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Prostate cancer is one leading cause of cancer-related death among men in Western countries. The standard therapies for localized prostate cancer include radical prostatectomy and radiation therapy. Such measures are relatively effective in the short term, but many patients ultimately relapse. These patients may benefit from a combination of standard therapy and oncolytic virus therapy. My work aimed to develop viruses for this purpose.TARP is a protein that in males is specifically expressed in prostate epithelial and cancer cells. In my thesis, I characterized the TARP promoter and showed that TARP expression is regulated at the transcriptional level by testosterone through binding of the androgen receptor in the proximal TARP promoter. I further developed TARP promoter-based regulatory sequences for prostate-specific gene expression. A sequence comprising a PSA enhancer, a PSMA enhancer and the TARP promoter was constructed and designated PPT. An adenoviral vector containing the PPT sequence shielded from transcriptional interference by an H19 insulator showed high prostate-specific transcriptional activity in human cells both in the presence and absence of testosterone. However, in experimental murine prostate cancer the PPT sequence is not active. Therefore, a two-step transcriptional amplification (TSTA) system was used together with the PPT sequence to develop an adenovirus that confers prostate-specific transgene expression also in murine cells.I constructed a conditionally replicating adenovirus where the E1A gene expression is controlled by an H19 insulator-shielded PPT regulatory sequence, Ad[I/PPT-E1A]. This virus exhibited absolute prostate specificity in terms of E1A expression, viral replication and cytolysis in vitro and in vivo. Importantly, our virus is active both in the presence and absence of testosterone, which may prove beneficial for patients treated by hormonal withdrawal. Hopefully, my work will improve existing gene therapy strategies for prostate cancer and in the long term improve the prognosis for patients with prostate cancer.

  • Regulation of interleukin-4 signaling by extracellular reduction of intramolecular disulfides
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications - BBRC. - : Elsevier BV. - 0006-291X .- 1090-2104. ; 390:4, s. 1272-1277
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Interleukin-4 (IL-4) contains three structurally important intramolecular disulfides that are required for the bioactivity of the cytokine. We show that the cell surface of HeLa cells and endotoxin-activated monocytes can reduce IL-4 intramolecular disulfides in the extracellular space and inhibit binding of IL-4 to the IL-4R alpha receptor. IL-4 disulfides were in vitro reduced by thioredoxin 1 (Trx1) and protein disulfide isomerase (PDI). Reduction of IL-4 disulfides by the cell surface of HeLa cells was inhibited by auranofin, an inhibitor of thioredoxin reductase that is an electron donor to both Trx1 and PDI. Both Trx1 and PDI have been shown to be located at the cell surface and our data suggests that these enzymes are involved in catalyzing reduction of IL-4 disulfides. The pro-drug N-acetylcysteine (NAC) that promotes T-helper type 1 responses was also shown to mediate the reduction of IL-4 disulfides. Our data provides evidence for a novel redox dependent pathway for regulation of cytokine activity by extracellular reduction of intramolecular disulfides at the cell surface by members of the thioredoxin enzyme family.

    • There is an increasing demand for imaging methods that can be used for automatic, accurate and quantitative determination of the amounts of abdominal fat. Such methods are important as they will allow the evaluation of some of the risk factors underlying the ’metabolic syndrome’. The metabolic syndrome is becoming common in large parts of the world, and it appears that a dominant risk factor for developing this syndrome is abdominal obesity. Subjects that are afflicted with the metabolic syndrome are exposed to a high risk for developing a large range of diseases such as type 2 diabetes, cardiac failure, and stroke. The aim of this work

  • Time synchronous bluetooth sensor networks
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: IEEE Consumer Communications and Networking Conference. - Piscataway, NJ : IEEE Communications Society. - 1424400856 ; , s. 336-340
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Bluetooth-equipped wireless sensor nodes can be quickly integrated in small home networks. These networks can be utilized e.g. for surveillance, home monitoring and automation. Accurate time is an important factor for time-stamping of sensor data, encryption/authentication and it can also to used to implement time synchronous schemes for low power radio communication. We argue that IP-based time synchronization, such as various flavors of the NTP protocol, can be used with Bluetooth networks. This in combination with an activation schedule allows an efficient trade-off between energy consumption and communication delay, and provides easy integration with available infrastructure. The proposed approach in this paper is well suited for smaller wireless home networks, typically singlehop networks with access points that are always available. Our approach is verified by experiments performed on a COTS-based platform using Bluetooth.

  • A General Method for Correction of Intensity Inhomogeniety in Two Point Dixon Imaging
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine annual meeting (ISMRM'08). - : International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Two point Dixon imaging can be used for quantitative fat estimation. However, field inhomogeneities pose a problem that needs to be corrected for before quantitative measurements can be obtained. We present a general framework for field inhomogeneitiy correction by fitting a set of smooth 3D spatial basis functions to voxels with high fat content. By choosing the number of basis functions, the smoothness constraint of the field can be controlled. The method is evaluated by measuring the FWHM of the fat peak in histograms for different number of basis functions. It is also compared to a previous method with good results.

  • Molecular phylogenetics of Alchemilla, Aphanes and Lachemilla (Rosaceae) inferred from plastid and nuclear intron and spacer DNA sequences, with comments on generic classification
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution. - : Elsevier BV. - 1055-7903 .- 1095-9513. ; 47, s. 1030-1044
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Alchemilla (the lady’s mantles) is a well known but inconspicuous group in the Rosaceae, notable for its ornamental leaves and pharmaceutical properties. The systematics of Alchemilla has remained poorly understood, most likely due to confusion resulting from apomixis, polyploidisation and hybridisation, which are frequently observed in the group, and which have led to the description of a large number of (micro-) species. A molecular phylogeny of the genus, including all sections of Alchemilla and Lachemilla as well as five representatives of Aphanes, based on the analysis of the chloroplast trnL–trnF and the nuclear ITS regions is presented here. Gene phylogenies reconstructed from the nuclear and chloroplast sequence data were largely congruent. Limited conflict between the data partitions was observed with respect to a small number of taxa. This is likely to be the result of hybridisation/introgression or incomplete lineage sorting. Four distinct clades were resolved, corresponding to major geographical division and life forms: Eurasian Alchemilla, annual Aphanes, South American Lachemilla and African Alchemilla. We argue for a wider circumscription of the genus Alchemilla, including Lachemilla and Aphanes, based on the morphology and the phylogenetic relationships between the different clades.

  • Alternatives to pickling : preparation of carbon and low alloyed steel wire rod
  • 2006
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • A well established method for scale removal on hot rolled wire rod is pickling. To avoid pollution problems, the wire rod can be mechanically descaled. By this method, the removed scale can be recirculated to the blast furnace. In batch pickling considerable energy is necessary; e.g. for heating of the pickling baths, ventilation of acid fumes and application of lubricant carrier. Energy consumption of the alternative descaling methods has been assessed and compared to pickling A method was developed to evaluate the remaining scale on mechanically descaled wire rod. Stretching experiments were used to evaluate adhesion of scale to the wire rod surface of different steel grades. Most of the scale was removed on the carbon steel grades and Cr/V alloyed steel grades. More scale remained on silicon alloyed steel grades. Shot blasting with steel shots was studied as an alternative to pickling. This method removed the scale on all studied steel grades, even the silicon alloyed grades. The wire rod surface was much rougher compared to the pickled wire rod surface. The shot blast power consumption was measured and evaluated. The PC strand wire gave more wear of dies otherwise the shot blasted wire rod showed no difference in the wire drawing process compared to pickled wire rod. Downstream problems such as cleaning and adherence of copper were observed. Reverse bending and brushing with steel brushes and brushes with SiC abrasives were studied on wire rod of low carbon and silicon chromium alloyed steel grades. Scale remained in surface valleys after brushing of the low carbon steel grade. The silicon steel grades were not possible to descale by bending and brushing. Surface defects from brushing were observed on wire rods brushed by steel brushes, but not on wire rod brushed by SiC-nylon brushes. A study of shot blasting with recycled glass was done. Due to the lower density, the shot velocity must be higher than for steel shots. Recycled glass gives an irregular surface of the wire, including chip formation, which can improve the lubricant carrying ability of the wire rod surface, but also increase the risk for reduction of the fatigue strength of the wire. The differences of die wear using wire rods descaled by two treatments; pickling and reversed bending has been studied. The study gave a background of wear mechanism and described a method to estimate die wear in wire drawing. The conclusions of the experiments indicate that the method for wire rod preparation seems to be of minor importance for the wear of die. The wear rate of a die used in the sixth draft was one order of magnitude lower than the wear rate of the die in the first draft. Abrasive wear is present presumably from the WC grains, torn out in the adhesive wear, on both dies used on pickled wire rod and reverse bent and steel wool cleaned wire rod. In order to evaluate new methods to descale wire rod, the effect of thermal shock has been studied. An estimation of the stresses, developed in the oxide during cooling after hot rolling and a FEM-simulation during cooling from ambient temperature down to 77 K, has been made. Experiments using liquid nitrogen, flame and steam to descale wire rod have been performed with mild steel and silicon and chromium steel wire rod. The experiments have shown that thermal shock cannot descale the wire rod. Only a descaling effect from the flame has been found.

  • The Value of the UroVysion((R)) Assay for Surveillance of Non-Muscle-Invasive Bladder Cancer.
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: European Urology. - : Elsevier BV. - 1873-7560 .- 0302-2838. ; 54:2, s. 402-408
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE: Patients with non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer are traditionally followed by repeat cystoscopy and urine cytology. A fluorescence in situ hybridisation technique called UroVysion((R)) (UV) is now available for clinical diagnosis of urothelial cancer cells. The aim of the present study was to compare UV analysis with routine follow-up methods. METHODS: We studied an unselected cohort of patients undergoing cystoscopy follow-ups at two Swedish centres in 2004-2005. All patients were investigated by cystoscopy, cytology, and UV assay. The UV assay was evaluated with regards to sensitivity, specificity, and positive predictive value for tumour recurrence. RESULTS: In all, 159 cases were analysed. UV had a 30% overall sensitivity for the 27 biopsy-proven recurrences and 70% sensitivity for high-risk tumours (pT1 and carcinoma in situ [CIS]). The specificity of UV was 95%. UV detected all six CIS cases in the study and was predictive in two additional patients who developed CIS within 1 yr of inclusion. Cytology was positive in four of those eight CIS cases and atypical in the other four. CONCLUSIONS: The UV assay cannot replace cystoscopy for surveillance of patients with non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer, but it may be valuable as a supplement to traditional measures for detecting CIS. Before any conclusions can be drawn regarding the efficacy of novel markers of bladder cancer, they must be studied in bladder cancer patients undergoing endoscopic surveillance.

  • Improved estimation and visualization of two-dimensional myocardial strain rate using MR velocity mapping
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Magnetic Resonance Imaging. - : Wiley. - 1053-1807 .- 1522-2586. ; 28:3, s. 604-611
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: To estimate regional myocardial strain rate, with reduced sensitivity to noise and velocities outside the region of interest, and provide a visualization of the spatial variation of the obtained tensor field within the myocardium. Materials and Methods: Myocardial velocities were measured using two-dimensional phase contrast velocity mapping. Velocity gradients were estimated using normalized convolution and the calculated 2D strain rate tensor field was visualized using a glyph representation. Validation utilized a numerical phantom with known strain rate distribution. Strain rate glyph visualizations were created for normal myocardium in both systole and diastole and compared to a patient with an anteroseptal infarction. Results: In the phantom study the strain rate calculated with normalized convolution showed a very good agreement with the analytic solution, while traditional methods for gradient estimation were shown to be sensitive to both noise and surrounding velocity data. Normal myocardium showed a homogenous strain rate distribution, while a heterogeneous strain rate can be clearly seen in the patient data. Conclusion: The proposed approach for quantification and visualization of the regional myocardial strain rate can provide an objective measure of regional myocardial contraction and relaxation that may be valuable for the assessment of myocardial heart disease. © 2008 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

  • 2009
  • Ingår i: 16th World Congress and Exhibition on Intelligent Transport Systems 2009. - Red Hook : Curran Associates, Inc.. - 9781617385896
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents first results for vehicle detection and vehicle property estimation based on the assessment of traffic induced vibrations in the road surface. A surface mounted 3D accelerometer device is used to register the vibrations in the surface. Acquired data from experiments on roads are used to design methods that are able to detect vehicle passages, estimate the number of axles of a vehicle and also deduce the wheel-base for passenger cars. Evaluation of the methods indicate that the accelerometer based approach is feasible and should be further developed in order to deduce vehicle properties like vehicle speed and distance to sensing device from one device. Moreover, results for the vehicle detection on real-life traffic data from the E4 in northern Sweden are summarized.

    • In this article we argue that a structured use of perspective descriptions can support a design process. A design perspective is a coherent set of values and aspects emphasized by the designer in a given design situation. We present a generic framework for describing 7 dimensions of perspectives concerning user, artifact, context, activities, communication, central relations, and use qualities that we argue are relevant in a design situation. Subsequently we use this metaperspective to describe four perspectives: tool, architectural, usability, and media perspective distilled from literature sources. By conducting two design workshops, we have evaluated the effects of using perspective descriptions to address the problem of idea generation in the early phases of design. Our analysis shows that the perspectives contain values that can have an important impact on the resulting artifact. By guiding the exploration of the design space, they influence both the artifact's conceptual idea and its use qualities. In our design example, a car game, the conceptual idea of the artifact varied from a goal-oriented tool to a media-based communication experience. Use qualities varied from a task-based flow of action to a format-dependent communication experience. The perspectives served as a synthesis of basic assumptions from the literature and as support to generate conceptually different design ideas. Based on the outcome of our study, we propose an approach for working with design perspectives in design practice, and education. We also present an agenda for research on design perspectives. • Specific mediator inhibition by the NO donors SNP and NCX 2057 in the peripheral lung: implications for allergen-induced bronchoconstriction.
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Respiratory Research. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1465-9921 .- 1465-993X. ; 10:Jun 4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to examine potential therapeutic effect of the two NO donors NCX 2057 (3-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-2-propenoic acid) 4-(nitrooxy)butyl ester) and SNP (sodium nitroprusside) on the early allergic airway response in the peripheral lung. METHODS: The experiments were performed in guinea pig lung parenchyma (GPLP) derived from ovalbumin (OVA) sensitized guinea pigs. The effects of NCX 2057 and SNP were evaluated by contractile responses and mediator release during OVA challenge. The generation of nitrite and nitrate was assessed by chemiluminescence. Statistical analysis was evaluated by ANOVA. RESULTS: Cumulatively increasing concentrations of OVA (1-10,000 ng/ml) induced concentration-dependent contractions of the GPLP that were reduced by NCX 2057 (100 microM, p < 0.001) and SNP (100 microM, p < 0.05). Antigen-induced eicosanoid release was decreased by NCX 2057 (100 microM, p < 0.001) but not by SNP (100 microM), whereas the release of histamine was reduced by SNP (100 microM, p < 0.001) but not by NCX 2057 (100 microM). In addition, NCX 2057 (0.1-100 microM), but not SNP (0.1-100 microM), relaxed leukotriene D4 (10 nM) precontracted GPLP (p < 0.01). The guanylyl cyclase inhibitor ODQ had no effect on the NCX 2057 mediated relaxation. SNP released significantly less nitrite than NCX 2057. CONCLUSION: Although both SNP and NCX 2057 reduced the release of pro-inflammatory mediators, their profiles were distinctly different. Furthermore, NCX 2057 also induced smooth muscle dilation in the GPLP. The findings point to specific anti-inflammatory effects of different NO donors in the peripheral lung tissue.

  • Ingår i: International Archives of Allergy and Immunology. - : S. Karger AG. - 1423-0097 .- 1018-2438. ; 149:1, s. 1-15
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Dendritic cells (DCs) are central in allergy as regulators of the Th1/Th2 balance. We have recently demonstrated a unique transcriptional profile of DCs in patients with ongoing allergy compared with healthy subjects and shown that crosstalk between DCs and memory T cells affects the transcriptional profile of T cells. However, the transcriptional profile of DCs educated by T cells in allergy is unknown. Methods: In the present study, we have examined the transcriptional profiles of DCs after stimulation with grass pollen allergens, Phleum pratense and coculture with autologous CD4+ memory T cells using high-density microarray. Protein analysis was performed using flow cytometry and recombinant antibody protein microarrays. Patients with allergic rhinitis and healthy subjects were compared. Results: The results reveal a distinct T-cell-induced DC profile in atopic individuals. Accordingly, about 170 genes were upregulated and 40 genes downregulated. For example, the chemokine receptor CXCR4 and the tumor necrosis factor receptor CD30 were upregulated in DCs derived from atopic donors, and this could also be verified at the protein level. Conclusion: We conclude that crosstalk between CD4+ memory T cells and autologous DCs induces transcriptional reprogramming in DCs. This finding suggests that T cells have a key instructive role in educating DCs in Th2-type responses.

    • Effective training sequences and reliable channel estimation algorithms are essential for enhancing the performance of multi-input multi-output (MIMO) underwater acoustic communications (UAC). Also, effective interference cancellation schemes are crucial for reliable symbol detection. In this paper, the problem of designing MIMO training sequences is considered. Moreover, we present a sparse learning via iterative minimization (SLIM) algorithm for enhanced channel estimation and reduced computational complexity. Furthermore, RELAX-BLAST, a linear minimum mean-squared error based symbol detection scheme, is implemented efficiently by exploiting the conjugate gradient method and diagonalization properties of circulant matrices. The proposed MIMO UAC techniques are evaluated using both simulated and experimental examples.

    • Potential events of allopolyploidy may be indicated by incongruences between separate phylogenies based on plastid and nuclear gene sequences. We sequenced two plastid regions and two nuclear ribosomal regions for 34 ingroup taxa in Fragariinae (Rosaceae), and six outgroup taxa. We found five well supported incongruences that might indicate allopolyploidy events. The incongruences involved Aphanes arvensis, Potentilla miyabei, Potentilla cuneata, Fragaria vesca/moschata, and the Drymocallis clade. We evaluated the strength of conflict and conclude that allopolyploidy may be hypothesised in the four first cases. Phylogenies were estimated using Bayesian inference and analyses were evaluated using convergence diagnostics. Taxonomic implications are discussed for genera such as Alchemilla, Sibbaldianthe, Chamaerhodos, Drymocallis and Fragaria, and for the monospecific Sibbaldiopsis and Potaninia that are nested inside other genera. Two orphan Potentilla species, P. miyabei and P. cuneata are placed in Fragariinae. However, due to unresolved topological incongruences they are not reclassified in any genus.

  • Power aware design of COTS-based embedded Internet systems
  • 2005
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • An embedded system is a small autonomous computer system that is encapsulated in the device it is controlling. Examples of device with embedded systems are TVs, microwaves, and dishwashers. A modern car can hold as much as 60 microprocessors. Embedded systems sales are rapidly increasing. In fact processor sales for embedded system are much larger than those for personal computers. PC processors only represents 2 percent of all processor sales. The division of EISLAB at Luleå University of Technology focuses on research on Embedded internet systems (EIS). Embedded Internet Systems are embedded systems used to collect, process and distribute data over the Internet. EIS devices is a rapidly growing field. The reduced physical size and price of EIS sensors make them attractive to use in a wide range of applications such as; environmental monitoring, industrial, health care, and military surveillance. The vision of EISLAB is sensors with lifetimes in the range of years that will fit within a few cubic centimeters. The sensors developed at EISLAB are based on commercial-of-the-shelf-components (COTS). Using COTS-components reduces development time and cost for prototypes and small series products. All communication is handled using standardized protocols to give the device access to available communication infrastructure, such as cellular networks and the Internet. As most of the nodes are battery operated the dominant constraint for EIS devices is power consumption. This thesis presents our work to address this topic at a high level of abstraction. The first paper includes the development of a power aware design methodology for EIS devices. In the second paper the proposed design methodology is applied to a bluetooth-equipped device. The third paper discusses the problem of reducing power consumption of an always connected EIS device, showing the tradeoffs between power consumption and response time.

  • Power characterization of a bluetooth-equipped sensor node
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: REALWSN 2005. - Kista : Swedish Institute of Computer Science.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) consist of small, autonomous devices with wireless networking capabilities. In order to further increase the applicability of WSNs in real world ap- plications, minimizing energy consumption and size are im- portant research topics. A WSN node itself is a complex system consisting of numerous components, and the energy consumption of the node depends heavily on the interac- tion between its components and their respective operation modes. To develop a power consumption model, we have investigated the power characteristics of a Bluetooth(BT)- equipped node based on COTS (commercial o®-the-shelf) components running standardized protocols for communica- tion. The characterization captures the transient behavior of the individual components as well as the dynamic behav- ior of the system as a whole. Although the parameters of the model are derived for a speci¯c node, the model and our conclusions can be applied to WSN nodes in general. Based on our model the estimated lifetime of a battery powered BT-equipped node can range from a couple of days to sev- eral months depending on battery and usage. This result indicates that COTS based sensor nodes can be used in a wide range of applications.
