  • Entrepreneurship and projects—Linking segregated communities
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0956-5221 .- 1873-3387. ; 30:2, s. 214-230
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Research in the areas of entrepreneurship and project work management hasfollowed parallel but separate paths. However, in real practice, the connections betweenentrepreneurship and project practice appear stronger. Thus, there are potential research linksto be exploited and the view taken in this article is that there are gains in finding conceptualconnections between the two areas. The rationale for this article is that in terms of knowledge building, there is a damagingfragmentation and separation of the two areas. In research there is an emphasis in publishing inniche journals and that emphasis has contributed to a separation of the communities and thefragmentation of knowledge. Similar fragmenting mechanisms can also be found on the practicalside where there is a reliance on 'experts' and on practice specialties. In this article we seek to combat this trend and want to contribute to integration anddefragmentation by referring to the development paths of the two areas, by describing existinglinkages and by pointing to the conceptual and practitioner gains to be accrued from linking thetwo areas.

  • An MRI scale for assessment of haemophilic arthropathy from the International Prophylaxis Study Group.
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Haemophilia. - : Wiley. - 1351-8216. ; 18:6, s. 962-970
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Evaluation of prophylactic treatment of haemophilia requires sensitive methods. To design and test a new magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scale for haemophilic arthropathy, two scales of a combined MRI scoring scheme were merged into a single scale which includes soft tissue and osteochondral subscores. Sixty-one joint MRI's of 46 patients with haemophilia were evaluated by four radiologists using the new and older scales. Forty-six of the joints were evaluated using two X-ray scales. For all MRI scores, interreader agreement and correlations with X-ray scores and lifetime number of haemarthroses were analysed. The interreader agreement intraclass correlation coefficient was 0.82, 0.89 and 0.88 for the soft tissue and osteochondral subscores and the total score, as evaluated according to the new MRI scale, compared to 0.80 and 0.89 as for the older scales. The total score and osteochondral subscore according to the new scale, as well as scores according to the older scales were correlated (P < 0.01) with number of haemarthroses (Spearman correlation 0.35-0.68) and with the X-ray scores (Spearman correlation 0.40-0.76), but no correlation (P > 0.05) was found between the soft tissue subscore of the new MRI scale and the X-ray scores. The new MRI scale is simpler to apply than the older and has similar reader reliability and correlation with lifetime number of haemarthroses, and by separating soft tissue and osteochondral changes it gives additional information. The new scale is useful for analyses of early and moderate stages of arthropathy, and may help to evaluate prophylactic haemophilia treatment.

  • Advancing Research on Projects and Temporary Organizations
  • 2014
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Project management as a field is sometimes characterised by prescriptive analysis often founded on little deep research. This book is different - drawing on some of the most interesting contributors to the field, it should be read by anyone interested in seeing projects as a social accomplishment in which people, rather than systems, have the most pertinent role.

  • Projects - real, virtual or what?
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Managing Business in Projects. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 1753-8378. ; 3:1, s. 10-21
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Purpose – At the heart of this paper is the question of how to describe the ongoing changes of project management (PM) and how to cultivate the understating of projects. In line with the theme of this issue, a non-traditional approach of presenting this paper is used with the aim of providing a lived experience view on projects. This helps pave the way for changed perceptions of many of the traditional ideas of projects and PM, implicitly demanding a need for rethinking the field. The purpose of this paper is to offer some of that rethinking and suggest how to research it. Design/methodology/approach – The approach is narrative and builds on exploratory storytelling which is common in the social sciences but quite non-traditional in the PM sphere. Findings – The paper explores the kind of arguments people might have when defending their perceptions of what a project is and should be. Practical implications – Traditional PM might benefit from being open to experiences from non-traditional areas of application, and equally important is that the reverse might apply. Originality/value – Rethinking PM and relating to social science areas is very much in the vogue presently. The authors wish to push that issue even further, and this paper illustrates one way to achieve a fruitful dialogue or a discussion in a scientifically based context.

  • A Dark Side ofInternationalization
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Final Program and Abstracts.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The importance of internationalization for Sweden has for a long time been hot on the political agenda. The academic field is part of a strong support of internationalization ambitions. But there are degenerate species of internationalization to keep a sharp eye on. One we have in mind concerns how applicants for academic positions are evaluated.Part of this internationalization is that publications in international journals (mostly American or British) are expected to be the prime criteria in evaluation for academic positions. Evaluations also seem to be transformed into a mathematical exercise where content in fact does not count, but only the numbers of publications and the rankings of the journals. A similar trend is the demand for international evaluators of all parts of our national system which is research programs, applications for financial resources for research programs, projects and positions. International is also when it comes to these matters almost equated with experts from the US orwestern Europe even though the academic landscape is transformed worldwide. We question this trend: Is quality promoted in this way? Scandinavian/Nordic systems have qualities that are worth protecting. We will elaborate on our standpoints and give some examples from our own experiences as evaluators and experts. We will also argue that the methods used by many international colleagues could be seen as part of a devaluation of the professional academic system. Unfortunately, we expect the methods used to be the standard in the years to come.

  • 2014
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Managing Projects in Business/Emerald. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 1753-8378 .- 1753-8386. ; 7:4, s. 720-725
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose– The purpose of this paper is to describe a useful mentorship experience from the perspective of the current author. It is a one case study at the same time as it opens up for reflections on mentorship in a variety of contexts with implications for academia.Design/methodology/approach– Storytelling and reflections for the sake of reviving the notions of mentorship in academia by paying tribute to a trusted mentor.Findings– The story is about how the mentorship evolved as part of a friendship relation, but the story has also implications for how mentoring can be developed as a personal strategy.Originality/value– Mentoring can either be planned as a deliberate process or it can just happen, growing out of experiences from working with another person.

  • Muddling through and TV enterprising in Sweden
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of Business Research. - : Elsevier BV. - 0148-2963 .- 1873-7978. ; 65:6, s. 752-757
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • By using data from an extensive study of independent TV production companies in Sweden, this article seeks to demonstrate that there are amendment opportunities to the original formulation of “muddling through” in a TV production context. The TV production industry is special in that the companies are extremely project oriented with very few permanent employees and with outside cadres involved temporarily. The companies also have a strict division of the work consisting of TV production (delivering TV programs to distributors), by managing and marketing formats (workable program ideas in an elaborated form) to TV broadcasters or to other TV production companies. These are the two forms of direct money making. At that, representatives of the industry conceive of it as in transience. Concerns about trends and ongoing changes dominate strategic work. The finding is that “muddling through” or “disjointed incrementalism” takes on different shapes in these three domains: TV production, format work and strategy making.

  • Temporary organizations and end states : A theory is a child of its time and in need of reconsideration and reconstruction
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Managing Projects in Business/Emerald. - 1753-8378 .- 1753-8386. ; 6:3, s. 587-594
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to respond to the research note on the article “A theory on temporary organizations” by reminding readers about the lack of timelessness in the social sciences and alluding to some alternative theory formulations.Design/methodology/approach – By describing/analyzing the context within which “A theory” was developed, the notion that any theory is a child of its time is explicated. Thus, an understanding for the need for reconsideration and reconstruction in social science theory is created.Findings – A necessary step in the work is to come up with ideas as to how crucial elements get transformed and is related to social development. The argument is that when it comes to the use of the word project is under change which creates a tension as to the appropriate realm for a theory of temporary organizations. A theory building on the notion of end state appears to be useful.Practical implications – A theory incorporating the notion of end state opens up for new ideas on how to manage projects. The traditional project management guidelines might inhibit good solutions to focused behavior. An end state approach is more open for changes in the environment and in ambitions.Originality/value – The theme opens up for less rigid approaches in relation to traditional project management. The crucial role that planning beforehand is considered to have will be transformed to other mechanisms, triggering planning and rethink.

  • The changing face of academic publishing : on the past, present and future of the Scandinavian Journal of Management
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Management. - : Elsevier. - 0956-5221 .- 1873-3387. ; 26:3, s. 309-317
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article provides accounts by the past and present editors of the Scandinavian Journal of Management, recounting its history and showing how editing an international academic journal has changed over time. Reflections are offered on developing a journal of management studies from the margins; from outside the core of a field that is dominated by Anglo-American actors, outlets and traditions. This article provides insights on working a system of academic publishing that has become global, on the one hand, and on striving to maintain a distinct and attractive niche profile, on the other.
