Mangling the process : a meta-theoretical account of process theorizing

- Process approaches are increasingly applied in qualitative studies in many fields within social sciences.Yet, few studies have seriously elaborated on the ontological premises of process theorizing.This study addresses this void by suggesting a process philosophical framework. The frameworkis ontologically grounded with the concepts of causality, spatiality, and temporality in processtheorizing. We use these tenets for developing three process theorizing techniques – articulating,relating, and conjugating. Articulating denotes to effectively expressing the potential identifying andgenerative properties of the process. Relating is the technique by which one maintains continuousconnections within and between reified properties of a process. Conjugating is the technique bywhich a process’ identifying and generative properties are pulled together from various temporaland spatial sites in order to form a novel nexus. Each of these techniques builds on processphilosophy and process theory and is illustrated through examples from prior process studies.

- Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the advancement of research methods in management spirituality by proposing a novel and innovative approach for generating empirical material on issues relevant for practitioners. Design/methodology/approach: The approach introduced is designed as a one-year group process based on Schein’s concept of clinical inquiry, primarily aimed at helping the participating managers to address challenging issues that they face in real life. When this helping process is successful, empirical material on these issues is revealed, as the participants share information to receive help themselves. Findings: Findings illustrate how the approach generates extensive, rich and broad data, guided by what becomes important for the participating managers as the process unfolds. A strong holding environment allows for urgent matters to be shared straight from the heart. Research limitations/implications: As this activity is based on the belief that the managers know best the issues relevant to them, a deviation from the assumed research direction should be seen as help to focus on relevant issues, rather than an obstacle of following an original plan. Practical implications: The proposed approach may be of particular interest to researchers who not only want to contribute to academic knowledge but also wish to work with people and facilitate transformation. Originality/value: This paper advances understandings of generating empirical material in the field of management spirituality through an innovative, client-centered research approach, rooted in well-established theories. © 2017, © Emerald Publishing Limited.

- Artikeln beskriver hur en högskola vill bidra till att skapa hållbarhet, inte enbart genom forskning, utan också genom att reformera utbildningen. Studenterna vid Handelshögskolan i Stockholm får numera lära sig vilka globala utmaningar vi står inför och vilka riskerna är om vi inte gör något åt dem, men också vilka möjligheter det finns och hur de själva kan bidra till att nå de globala målen. Under de första fyra terminerna, får de, parallellt med andra kurser, läsa ett spår kallat ”Global Challenges”, varvid en termin ägnas åt mänsklig hållbarhet. Förutom att hålla själva, behöver de lära sig att skapa hållbara organisationer, men också att tänka i termer av meningsfullhet och att släppa sitt ego, till förmån för ekosystemet.
