  • Evidence for s-channel single top quark production in p(p)over-bar collisions at root s=1.96 TeV
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters B. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693 .- 1873-2445. ; 726:4-5, s. 656-664
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present measurements of the cross sections for the two main production modes of single top quarks in p (p) over bar collisions at root s = 1.96 TeV in the Run II data collected with the DO detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.7 fb(-1). The s-channel cross section is measured to be sigma(p (p) over bar -> tb + X) = 1.10(-0.31)(+0.33) pb with no assumptions on the value of the t-channel cross section. Similarly, the t-channel cross section is measured to be sigma(p (p) over bar -> tqb + X) = 3.07(-0.49)(+0.54) pb. We also measure the s + t combined cross section as sigma(p (p) over bar -> tb + X, tqb + X) = 4.11(-0.55)(+0.60) ph and set a lower limit on the CKM matrix element vertical bar V-tb vertical bar> 0.92 at 95% C.L., assuming mt = 172.5 GeV. The probability to measure a cross section for the s channel at the observed value or higher in the absence of signal is 1.0 x 10(-4), corresponding to a significance of 3.7 standard deviations.

  • Measurement of differential tt production cross sections in pp collisions
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Physical Review D. - 1550-7998 .- 1550-2368. ; 90:9, s. 092006-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The production of top quark-antiquark pair events in pp collisions at root s= 1.96 TeV is studied as a function of the transverse momentum and absolute value of the rapidity of the top quarks as well as of the invariant mass of the tt pair. We select events containing an isolated lepton, a large imbalance in transverse momentum, and four or more jets with at least one jet identified as originating from a b quark. The data sample corresponds to 9.7 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity recorded with the D0 detector during Run II of the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. Observed differential cross sections are consistent with standard model predictions.

  • Fast solvers for thermal fluid structure interaction
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Computational Methods in Marine Engineering V - Proceedings of the 5th International Conference on Computational Methods in Marine Engineering, MARINE 2013. - 9788494140747 ; , s. 202-212
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We consider thermal fluid structure interaction to model industrial gas quenching in steel forging, where hot steel Is cooled using cold high pressured gas. This allows to define properties of the finished steel part, as for example yield strength, locally at low cost and without environmental problems. For the numerical simulation, a partitioned approach via a Dirichlet-Neumann coupling and a fixed point iteration is employed. In time, previously developede fficient time adaptive higher order time integration schemes are used. The respective models are the compressible Navier-Stokes equations and the nonlinear heate quation, where the parameter functions are obtained from measurements on a specific steel. Here, the use of different vector extrapolation methods for convergence acceleration techniques of the fixed point iteration is analyzed. Inparticular, Aitkenrelaxation, mini-malpolynomial extrapolation (MPE) and reduced rank extrapolation (RRE) are consid-ered.

  • MicroRNAs in the hypothalamus
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Neuroendocrinology. - : S. Karger AG. - 1423-0194 .- 0028-3835. ; 98:4, s. 243-253
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are short (∼22 nucleotides) non-coding ribonucleic acid (RNA) molecules that negatively regulate the expression of protein-coding genes. Posttranscriptional silencing of target genes by miRNA is initiated by binding to the 3′-untranslated regions of target mRNAs, resulting in specific cleavage and subsequent degradation of the mRNA or by translational repression resulting in specific inhibition of protein synthesis. An increasing amount of evidence shows that miRNAs control a large number of biological processes and there exists a direct link between miRNAs and disease. miRNA molecules are abundantly expressed in tissue-specific and regional patterns and have been suggested as potential biomarkers, disease modulators and drug targets. The central nervous system is a prominent site of miRNA expression. Within the brain, several miRNAs are expressed and/or enriched in the region of the hypothalamus and miRNAs have recently been shown to be important regulators of hypothalamic control functions. The aim of this review is to summarize some of the current knowledge regarding the expression and role of miRNAs in the hypothalamus.

  • Delta-like 1 homologue (DLK1) protein in neurons of the arcuate nucleus that control weight homeostasis and effect of fasting on hypothalamic DLK1 mRNA
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Neuroendocrinology. - : S. Karger AG. - 1423-0194 .- 0028-3835. ; 100:2-3, s. 209-220
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Delta-like 1 homologue (DLK1; also called preadipocyte factor 1) is an epidermal growth factor repeat-containing transmembrane protein that is cleaved by tumor necrosis factor-α-converting enzyme to generate a biologically active soluble form. DLK1 is involved in the differentiation of several cell types, including adipocytes. Lack of the <i>dlk1</i> gene results in adiposity, and polymorphism within the gene encoding DLK1 is associated with human obesity. The <i>dlk1</i> gene is expressed in restricted areas of the adult brain, with an enrichment of cell bodies expressing DLK1 mRNA in the hypothalamus. Antibodies to DLK1 were used to study the cellular localization and chemical identity of DLK1-immunoreactive neuronal cell bodies in rat hypothalamus. DLK1 immunoreactivity was demonstrated in the cell soma and dendrites of cell bodies in the suprachiasmatic, supraoptic, paraventricular, dorsomedial, arcuate nuclei and in the perifornical/lateral hypothalamic area. In the arcuate nucleus (Arc), DLK1 immunoreactivity was mainly seen in many neurons of the ventromedial and to a lesser extent in its ventrolateral division. Double labeling showed that 93.7% of orexigenic agouti-related peptide (AgRP) and 94.1% of neuropeptide Y (NPY) neurons located in the ventromedial part of the Arc were DLK1 positive, whereas 36.1% of anorexigenic pro-opiomelanocortin and 34.6% of cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript neurons of the Arc contained DLK1 immunoreactivity. DLK1 mRNA was downregulated in the hypothalamus of fasted animals. Presence of DLK1 in the majority of orexigenic Arc NPY/AgRP neurons and regulation of DLK1 mRNA by nutritional challenge suggest that DLK1 has a role in hypothalamic regulation of body weight control.
