  • Mobility, migration and seasonal tourism employment : evidence from Swedish mountain municipalities
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Hospitality and Tourism. - : Routledge. - 1502-2250 .- 1502-2269. ; 6:3, s. 197-213
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In recent research it has been shown that a large share of the tourism work force in the Swedish mountain municipalities have their permanent place of residence outside of daily commuting distance from the municipality where they work. In this study, tourism labour mobility and migration to two Swedish mountain municipalities, Åre and Malung, is examined. The principal question addressed is whether temporal tourism labour migration leads to permanent migration of tourism workers or not. The research is based on a longitudinal database material including individual observations between the years 1991–2001. It is shown that the case municipalities have a higher propensity than the rest to employ in‐migrants in tourism. Results also show that relatively few people involved in temporary labour migration to tourism employment in the case municipalities later will permanently migrate to the mountain municipalities but that tourism sector employment is important for the in‐migration of long distance commuters to the case municipalities. The reason for this it is argued is that the motive to seasonally migrate to tourism employment is lifestyle‐related and not meant to be permanent. The seasonality of tourism employment has implications for the local and regional development through tourism.

  • Characterisation of Electrical and Stiffness Properties of Conductive Textile Coatings with Metal Flake-shaped Fillers
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Materials. - : MDPI AG. - 1996-1944. ; 12:21, s. 1-18
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Two conductive formulations containing different types of micron-sized metal flakes (silver-coated copper (Cu) and pure silver (Ag)) were characterised and used to form highly electrically conductive coatings (conductors) on plain and base-coated woven fabrics, the latter in an encapsulated construction. With e-textiles as the intended application, the fabric stiffness, in terms of flexural stiffness and sheet resistance (Rsh), after durability testing (laundering and abrasion) was investigated and related to user friendliness and long-term performance. Bare and encapsulated conductors with increasing amounts of deposited solids were fabricated by adjusting the knife coating parameters, such as the coating gap height (5, 20, 50, and 200 μm), which reduced the Rsh, as determined by four-point probe (4PP) measurements; however, this improvement was at the expense of increased flexural stiffness of the coated fabrics. The addition of a melamine derivative (MF) as a cross-linker to the Cu formulation and the encapsulation of both conductor types gave the best trade-off between durability and Rsh, as confirmed by 4PP measurements. However, the infrared camera images revealed the formation of hotspots within the bare conductor matrix, although low resistances (determined by 4PP) and no microstructural defects (determined by SEM) were detected. These results stress the importance of thorough investigation to assure the design of reliable conductors applied on textiles requiring this type of maintenance.

  • Space-Time Prediction of Ocean Winds
  • 2005
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The topic of this thesis is inspired by an experiment in which a vessel, laying a submarine cable, was provided with forecasts overlaid with satellite observations of significant wave height. During the operation, the vessel was close to an adverse weather area and the personnel on board could confirm that the forecast was not as close to the "ground truth" as the satellite observation was. One of the outcomes of this experiment was the suggestion to develop a method providing forecasts merged with satellite observations. In this thesis such a method is developed for near-surface ocean winds. The thesis consists of four papers (Paper A-D). The contribution of Paper A and B is the development of a statistical framework, in which forecasts and satellite observations in a bounded area are merged and a measure of uncertainty is provided. A dimension-reduced Kalman filter is used as an emulator of the atmospheric dynamics. This is considered in Paper A. The method of merging Kalman filter forecasts with satellite measurements is developed in Paper B. Closely related to Paper A and B is the problem of modelling the covariance structure of residuals taken as differences between forecasts and satellite measurements. Two isotropic covariance functions belonging to the Matern family are used. However, neither of the functions seem to properly model the residual field. The contribution of Paper C is an explorative study and it forms a basis for further research. Finally, Paper D models the dynamics of a spatio-temporal process based on an image warping approach. Image warping models the dynamics through the movement of a set of control points. As well as allowing affine transformations, the model also allows for non-linear dynamics. The main contribution of this paper is the formulation of a penalized likelihood which is used to estimate the model.

  • Partner care, gender equality, and ageing in Spain and Sweden
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Ageing and Later Life. - : Linkoping University Electronic Press. - 1652-8670. ; 11:1, s. 69-89
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We used national surveys to study how older persons’ changing household patterns influence the gender balance of caregiving in two countries with distinct household structures and cultures, Spain and Sweden. In both countries, men and women provide care equally often for their partner in couple-only households. This has become the most common household type among older persons in Spain and prevails altogether in Sweden. This challenges the traditional dominance of young or middle-aged women as primary caregivers in Spain. In Sweden, many caregivers are old themselves. We focus attention to partners as caregivers and the consequences of changing household structures for caregiving, which may be on the way to gender equality in both countries, with implications for families and for the public services.

  • Service middleware for self-managing large-scale systems
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Network and Service Management. - 1932-4537. ; 4:3, s. 50-64
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Resource management poses particular challenges in large-scale systems, such as server clusters that simultaneously process requests from a large number of clients. A resource management scheme for such systems must scale both in the in the number of cluster nodes and the number of applications the cluster supports. Current solutions do not exhibit both of these properties at the same time. Many are centralized, which limits their scalability in terms of the number of nodes, or they are decentralized but rely on replicated directories, which also reduces their ability to scale. In this paper, we propose novel solutions to request routing and application placementtwo key mechanisms in a scalable resource management scheme. Our solution to request routing is based on selective update propagation, which ensures that the control load on a cluster node is independent of the system size. Application placement is approached in a decentralized manner, by using a distributed algorithm that maximizes resource utilization and allows for service differentiation under overload. The paper demonstrates how the above solutions can be integrated into an overall design for a peer-to-peer management middleware that exhibits properties of self-organization. Through complexity analysis and simulation, we show to which extent the system design is scalable. We have built a prototype using accepted technologies and have evaluated it using a standard benchmark. The testbed measurements show that the implementation, within the parameter range tested, operates efficiently, quickly adapts to a changing environment and allows for effective service differentiation by a system administrator.

  • A carbon budget for an oligotrophic clearwater lake in mid-Sweden
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Aquatic Sciences. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1015-1621 .- 1420-9055. ; 68:1, s. 52-64
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study, a whole-lake carbon budget for the oligotrophic, clearwater Lake Eckarfjärden was established both on an annual and seasonal basis. For budget calculations, the lake was divided into three habitats (pelagial, littoral and benthic) and the biota into 19 functional groups. In the lake, major parts of biomass (97%) and primary production (91%) are concentrated in benthic and littoral habitats and to a few functional groups. Respiration on the other hand, is focused on benthic and pelagial habitats where 60% and 39%, respectively, of the respiration took place. Our conceptual model indicates strong interactions between habitats. For instance, the pelagial is fed with carbon fixed by primary producers in the benthic and littoral zones. On an annual basis, total primary production exceeds total respiration and the lake is net autotrophic. However, there are clear differences between habitats and between seasons. For instance, the littoral is net autotrophic during spring, summer and autumn, the benthic habitat is net autotrophic only during summer, and the pelagial is always net heterotrophic. Our results demonstrate clear couplings between habitats and organisms and the importance of a holistic view when studying lake ecosystems.

  • Computational modelling in systems biology: from rewriting cell fates to detecting tumours
  • 2023
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Computational modelling is becoming an increasingly important tool in biological research. By performing computer simulations of models, it becomes possible to test theories about a biological system against experimental data. Simulations can also be used as a replacement for experiments otherwise unattainable. Well-constructed models have great predictive power which helps improve experimental protocols. All four papers included in this thesis concern the development of computational models of different nature and in different application areas. In Paper I, we develop CELLoGeNe, a software tool which maps Boolean implementation of gene regulatory networks (GRNs) into energy landscapes. Within this framework, cell commitment and reprogramming are considered as movements in an energy landscape. As a part of CELLoGeNe, we develop a tool for visualising multi-dimensional energy landscapes in more than three dimensions. Furthermore, we provide a tool for stochastically analysing the shape of the energy landscape by simulating cell reprogramming in the form of weighted random walks in a landscape. Finally, we demonstrate CELLoGeNe on two GRNs governing different aspects of induced pluripotent stem cells, identifying experimentally validated attractors and revealing potential reprogramming roadblocks. In Paper II, we develop a multi-scale model for early T-cell development. This multi-scale model contains a transcriptional level, an epigenetic level and a proliferation level. The model is tuned to experimental data and predicts state-switching kinetics validated with clonal data. In Paper III, we further develop this model by placing it into an agent-based framework. We use the full model to dissect the mechanism of when T-cell progenitors decide to commit the T-cell lineage and what role inheritance plays in the decision. In Paper IV, we develop a machine learning tool that automatically detects skin tumour borders, which could provide useful aid to surgeons. We use data from hyperspectral images, training artificial neural networks only on spectra from small regions representing either healthy tissue or tumour. Then, the trained networks are used to generate prediction. Thereafter, a segmentation algorithm determines the skin tumour borders. Our approach therefore circumvents the need for a complete ground truth image. A separate model instance is trained for each individual patient which makes our approach interesting for emerging precision skin tumour diagnostics where adaptability toward the individual is key.

  • Enhancing cognitive-behavior therapy in the treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder
  • 2014
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Background: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a prevalent and disabling condition. Although effective treatments such as cognitive-behavior therapy (CBT) exist, accessibility to this treatment is low and many OCD patients do not respond to CBT. Aims: The general aim of this thesis was to develop and test new treatment strategies for enhancing both the accessibility and the efficacy of CBT in the treatment of OCD More specifically, the aims were to investigate: • The efficacy of internet-based CBT (ICBT) for OCD (Studies I, II, and IV). • The impact of cognitive interventions in ICBT on obsessive beliefs and OCD symptoms (Study III). • The efficacy of adding an internet-based booster program to ICBT (Study IV). • The efficacy of adding the medication D-Cycloserine (DCS) to ICBT (Study V). Methods: To test the efficacy of ICBT, an open pilot study of a newly developed treatment program was conducted (Study I), followed by a randomized controlled trial (RCT; Study II). Long-term follow-up was assessed at 4-, 7-, 12- and 24-months after ICBT (Study IV). To investigate the role of obsessive beliefs, a longitudinal mediation analysis was conducted on patients receiving ICBT with weekly measurements (Study III). Booster efficacy was tested with an RCT design, where half of the patients who had undergone ICBT were randomized to a three-week booster program (Study IV). To test the efficacy of DCS, a double-blinded RCT was conducted, where 128 OCD patients were allocated to either DCS or placebo as adjuncts to ICBT (Study V). Results: Large effect sizes favoring ICBT were observed (Studies I and II) and these treatment effects were sustained up to two years after completed treatment (Study IV). The cognitive intervention, unexpectedly, immediately increased obsessive beliefs and this, in turn, predicted better treatment outcome (Study III). The addition of an internet-based booster program reduced relapse (Study IV). Although there were some indications of faster treatment response in the DCS group, no beneficial effects of DCS as adjunct to ICBT were observed either at post-treatment or at follow-up (Study V). Conclusions: ICBT is an effective method of administering CBT for OCD. Cognitive interventions in ICBT may have an impact on obsessive beliefs, and play a role in later symptom reduction. There may be beneficial effects of adding a booster to ICBT, but there is no evidence of a beneficial effect through adding DCS to this treatment.

  • Irony in the Political : Young people's use of irony in a political text conversation in a net community
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Lifelong Learning and Active Citizenship. - London : CiCe. - 9781907675010 - 1907675019 ; , s. 641-650
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The net community1 as a public place expresses current society while creating conditions and providing a framework for societal development and young people’s participation, living and understanding of the wider society. Today young people spend much time on the Internet, specifically in the social media2, and everyday political conversations are minimally researched. My research deals with young people’s conversation in net communities and how these conversations look, and the opportunities this creates for the growth of political citizens: What potential relevance may these opportunities have when young people are faced with existentially controversial and vital issues (about sustainable development)? The question for this paper is limited to a small part of this broader context concerning everyday political conversations in the light of irony. According to previous research, irony is a multifaceted and ambiguous phenomenon and the social media offer new expressions for irony. What does this mean for the text conversation? Irony is shown to be, through an initial observation, a rhetorical resource that visualises adversaries and pushes the conversation forward. My intention is, through a rhetorically oriented discourse analysis, to understand irony by identifying different types of irony and discuss possible implications: How does the use of irony look? What are its consequences for the conversation and the growth of political citizens? The theoretical entrance for this leans on the idea of the political. First I will present the concept of irony; secondly, theoretical and methodological inputs; thirdly, a description of the empirical data and how irony is identified; and finally, I present some preliminary results and conclusions.

  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Virology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0042-6822 .- 1096-0341. ; 402:1, s. 20-25
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Hemagglutination is an established method but has not been used previously to determine the efficacy of virus binding to a specific cellular receptor. Here we have utilized CD46-expressing erythrocytes from a transgenic mouse to establish whether and to what extent the species B adenoviruses (Ads) as well as Ad37 and Ad49 of species D can interact with CD46. A number of different agglutination patterns, and hence CD46 interactions, could be observed for the different adenovirus types. In this system Ad7p, Ad11a, and Ad14 did not agglutinate mouse erythrocytes at all. Hemagglutination of CD46 expressing erythrocytes with high efficiency was observed for the previously established CD46 users Ad11p and Ad35 as well as for the less investigated Ad34. Ad50 agglutinated with moderate efficiency. Ad16, Ad21 and Ad49 gave incomplete agglutination. Ad16 was the only adenovirus that could be eluted. No specific CD46 interaction could be observed for Ad3p or for Ad37.

  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Urban Studies. - : SAGE Publications. - 0042-0980 .- 1360-063X. ; 41:3, s. 641-659
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Interest in neighbourhood effects has been increasing. This article is a contribution to the field, directed towards the entire areas of three municipalities in Sweden, not only their distressed areas, and to their total population with data from the Statistics Sweden register. The aim of the study is to analyse the significance of surroundings to an individual's socioeconomic career in the form of education, occupational status and income. Guided by a theoretical framework of social justice, the study proposes places of good fortune and places of few opportunities. The survey cohort is individuals born in 1970, who lived at least 5 years in the same area during their adolescence. Their careers are analysed 10 years later, in 1995. The most important finding is that the socio-demographic and physical context of the residential area of adolescence affects the subsequent socioeconomic career.

  • Housing, Socio-Economic Security and Risks. A Qualitative Comparison of Household Attitudes in Finland and Sweden
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Housing Policy. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1461-6718 .- 1473-3269. ; 7:2, s. 151-172
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper addresses the meaning of housing and the perception of socio-economic security of different forms of tenure in Sweden and Finland. Household interviews reveal that, in stark contrast to Finland, Swedish respondents think that home ownership is not safer than renting. Few ‘absolutists’ can be found in Sweden who believe that one tenure is superior to the other, while home ownership is still favoured in Finland despite a major housing crash in the 1990s. However, some similarities were also present: for example, even though renting has a much more positive image in Sweden than in Finland, home ownership nonetheless was the number one housing preference. There are prima facie reasons to assume that attitudes in the two countries would tend towards convergence given the marked similarities in culture and society due to common history and cultural diffusion (usually from Sweden to Finland) and similar welfare state models producing relatively low income inequality. The paper hypothesizes that differences in attitudes are due to different institutional arrangements in connection with different cultural values attached to housing and tenure.

  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Population, Space and Place. - : Wiley. - 1544-8444 .- 1544-8452. ; 27:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper finds convincing evidence of upward progress out of poor Swedish neighbourhoods for individuals with a Swedish background, individuals with a European background, and those with a non-European background. We use the 1986 cohort of the Swedish population and follow them from age 15 when they are living at home to age 30. We find that by age 30, they live in a neighbourhood that in terms of the poverty level is relatively distant from the initial neighbourhood where they grew up. Mobility into less poor neighbourhoods is clearly linked to higher income, but interestingly, initial context is even more important. Mobility to less poor neighbourhoods is found for those starting in high-poverty neighbourhoods and vice versa for those starting in low-poverty neighbourhoods. Moreover, large-scale context and regional context strongly influence neighbourhood mobility along the poverty gradient. The analysis shows that a large proportion of individuals with a non-European background improve their neighbourhood status from where they were living as teenagers, to where they live after leaving home. Individuals who stay in the poorest neighbourhoods come from less favourable backgrounds, from large-scale poverty contexts, have low school grades, tend to have children early, and have low incomes and lower educational attainment. Individuals with a non-European background are overrepresented in this group. Thus, despite the overall gains in neighbourhood quality, the process of spatial sorting still contributes to an increased spatial concentration of vulnerable populations.

  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Ageing & Society. - : CAMBRIDGE UNIV PRESS. - 0144-686X .- 1469-1779. ; 39:8, s. 1752-1781
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Earlier research on residential mobility has demonstrated a tendency for the young old of the 55+-population to prefer peripheral locations, whereas older age groups choose central locations. Here, we present survey results indicating that such late-adulthood differences in preferences are supported by age–related shifts corresponding to differences in housing preferences expressed by individuals in peripheral as well as central locations in Sweden. A sample of 2,400 individuals aged 55 years and over was asked to select the seven most important characteristics of a dwelling from a list of 21 alternatives (SHIELD survey 2013). The preferences expressed were used as dependent variables in logistic regressions to determine to what extent the housing preferences of older people are linked to age, gender, socio-economic status and type of geographical area. The results demonstrated a close link between neighbourhood characteristics and housing preferences. Owning the dwelling, having a garden, and access to nature were stressed as important by individuals living in non-metropolitan middle-class areas and in suburban elite areas. The youngest cohort expressed similar preferences. Older age groups instead stressed the importance of an elevator, single-storey housing, and a good design for independent living; preferences that have similarities to those expressed by individuals living in large cities and smaller urban centres where such housing is more readily available.

  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Urban Studies. - : SAGE Publications. - 0042-0980 .- 1360-063X. ; 55:2, s. 365-383
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Will the consequences of residential segregation, that is, spatial concentration of marginalized populations on the one hand, and spatial concentration of affluent populations on the other hand, generate a situation where individual life trajectories are influenced by where individuals grow up? Our aim is to analyze how poverty risks and early income career at adult age are influenced by different neighborhood contexts in early youth. We use Swedish longitudinal register data, and follow individuals born in 1980 until 2012. Residential context is measured in 1995 at age 15 by expanding a buffer around the residential locations of each individual and, by computing statistical aggregates of different socio-demographic variables for that population. The results show that poverty risks increase for individuals growing up in areas characterized by high numbers of social allowance recipients living nearby, whereas elite geographical context is favorable for both women’s and men’s future income.

  • Navigating cultural transitions during resettlement : the case of unaccompanied refugee minors
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Psychology. - 1664-1078. ; 14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introduction: Refugees face the process of cross-cultural transitions upon arrival in their host country. This process is commonly referred to as acculturation and can be particularly challenging for asylum-seeking children and adolescent unaccompanied by a caregiver. To more effectively facilitate unaccompanied refugee minors (URMs) resettlement, this study sought to obtain an enhanced understanding of the acculturation processes of these youth’.Methods: Thus, interviews with 48 URMs, all of whom arrived before the age of 16 years, were analyzed in two steps. First, how the youth described their host country’s society and culture, followed by how they navigated within this societal and cultural landscape during resettlement. Results: The youth described how they navigated the Norwegian cultural and societal landscape by gaining cultural competence, adapting and finding ways to contribute, which made it easier for the youth to gain access to the society, to succeed as well as enhance their sense of agency. However, the youths also reported having to navigate between the expectations of their original and host country cultures, struggling with finding a balance between the two cultures.Discussion: The youth’ acculturation processes seemed to be the result of both their own needs, wishes and behavior as well as specific features in their host country culture, which supports the notion that acculturation processes to some degree are context- and culture-dependent. Knowledge regarding the cultural and societal framework that these youth face and how they navigate within it during resettlement is critical for identifying possible cross-cultural challenges and promoting positive developmental tracks. To understand more about acculturation and integration processes, future research should include specific cultural and societal features as well as immigrants’ own perspectives and experiences during resettlement.

  • Ingår i: Journal of Youth Studies. - : Routledge. - 1367-6261 .- 1469-9680. ; 20:10, s. 1346-1361
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In young people’s political participation in public decision-making, research and youth policy may benefit from a participation model that is pedagogical and sensitive to context. Due to the limitations of established participation models, the pedagogical political participation model (referred to here as the 3P-M) is suggested. The 3P-M is a theoretical and methodologically embedded model that builds on three observations: (1) that young people (as a category) are always presented as dependent on and subordinate to adults (decision-makers) in public decision-making, (2) that participation cannot be quantitatively measured without being normative and insensitive to context and (3) that different types of pedagogical leadership determine what kind of political participation is possible. The 3P-M offers an analytical framework for practitioners, policymakers and researchers to identify, explain and affect public pedagogical settings and situations in which young people politically participate.

  • TOSCA. Rail freight transport : Techno-economic analysis of energy and greenhouse gas reductions
  • 2011
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In Stage 1 of the EU/FP7-funded project TOSCA (Technology Opportunities and Strategies toward Climate-friendly trAnsport) the techno-economical feasibility of different technolo-gies and means to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is being analysed for different modes of transport. This is made over the long-term perspective until 2050, with 2009 as the reference year. This is the report on the rail freight transport market, applicable to the European Union (EU-27).The analysis presented in this report estimates that a number of efficient technologies and means are available, individually and in combination, to significantly reduce energy use and the resulting GHG emissions on the rail freight market until 2050. The analysis has considered the following technologies and means:– heavy freight trains (high payload capacity per metre of train as well as longer trains)– eco-driving, including traffic flow management– energy recovery– high-efficiency machinery in locomotives and electric supply– low air drag– incremental improvements, in particular reduced tare mass of wagons.Despite anticipated higher train speeds in most future train operations the above-mentioned technologies and means have, according to the analysis, the potential to reduce the average energy use per net-tonne-km (tkm) of payload by 40–50 % until 2050. As a consequence also the direct and indirect GHG emissions will be reduced. Energy use and GHG emissions are measured per net-tonne-km, assuming representative load factors in different operations.

  • TOSCA. Rail passenger transport : Techno-economic analysis of energy and greenhouse gas reductions
  • 2011
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In Stage 1 of the EU/FP7-funded project TOSCA (Technology Opportunities and Strategies toward Climate-friendly trAnsport) the techno-economical feasibility of different technologies and means to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is being analysed for the different modes of transport. This is made in the long-term perspective until 2050, with 2009 as the reference year. This is the report on rail passenger transport, applicable to the European Union (EU-27).The present report has been subject to review among railway experts, representing train suppliers, railway operators as well as academia. They have also responded to a questionnaire. Further, a workshop was held, where the report with assumptions and results was discussed. In the analysis presented in this report it is estimated that a number of efficient improvements that, individually and in combination, are available in order to significantly reduce energy use and the resulting GHG emissions on the rail passenger market until 2050. The analysis has considered different technologies and means:– low air drag– low train mass– energy recovery– eco-driving, including traffic flow management– space efficiency in trains (increasing payload per metre of train)– incremental improvements of energy efficiency, in particular reduced losses.Despite anticipated higher average train speeds in the future these combined approaches will, according to the analysis, have the potential to reduce the average specific energy use per passenger-km (pkm) in the order of 45–50 % in the very long term until 2050. As a consequ-ence also the direct and indirect GHG emissions will be reduced. The highest reductions are possible in city and regional rail operations. Reductions are more limited in high-speed opera-tions, because of the advanced technologies already applied. However, high-speed rail has today a comparatively low energy use per passenger-km, partly due to its high average load factor. To be consistent with other work packages of TOSCA, energy use and GHG emissions are measured per passenger-km, assuming representative load factors in different operations.

  • Young citizens' attitudes towards electronic identification : A neglected perspective in an on-going development and implementation process
  • 2012
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article reports from an empirical study of young Swedish university students’ attitudes towards electronic identification (eID). Three focus groups were conducted with students, as a main target group, who were asked to use a public e-service at the Swedish Board for Study Support which demanded secure electronic identification. After having conducted the assigned tasks the students’ attitudes were discussed in the focus group. Our findings show that usability and security are two main themes that the respondents found to be important in order to trust eID and e-services. This example of how citizens’ attitudes towards electronic identification can be explored in focus groups is related to the on-going national development process of a new eID solution on a strategic and artifact level. In this process no citizens are participating or involved so far. We conclude the article by discussing what might be the consequences of neglecting citizens’ attitudes in this kind of development and implementation processes.

  • Inequalities of quality of life in unemployed young adults : a population-based questionnaire study
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: International Journal for Equity in Health. - 1475-9276 .- 1475-9276. ; 6, s. 1-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: It is well known that unemployment is a great problem both to the exposed individual and to the whole society. Unemployment is reported as more common among young people compared to the general level of unemployment. Inequity in health status and lifesatisfaction is related to unemployment. The purpose of this population-based study was to describe QOL among unemployed young people compared to those who are not unemployed, and to analyse variables related to QOL for the respective groups. Methods: The sample consisted of 264 young unemployed individuals and 528 working or studying individuals as a reference group. They all received a questionnaire about civil status, educational level, immigration, employment status, self-reported health, self-esteem, social support, social network, spare time, dwelling, economy and personal characteristics. The response rate was 72%. The significance of differences between proportions was tested by Fisher's exact test or by χ2 test. Multivariate analysis was carried out by means of a logistic regression model. Results: Our results balance the predominant picture of youth unemployment as a principally negative experience. Although the unemployed reported lower levels of QOL than the reference group, a majority of unemployed young adults reported good QOL, and 24% even experienced higher QOL after being unemployed. Positive QOL related not only to good health, but also to high self-esteem, satisfaction with spare time and broad latitude for decision-making.Conclusion: Even if QOL is good among a majority of unemployed young adults, inequalities in QOL were demonstrated. To create more equity in health, individuals who report reduced subjective health, especially anxiety need extra attention and support. Efforts should aim at empowering unemployed young adults by identifying their concerns and resources, and by creating individual programmes in relation not only to education and work, but also to personal development.

  • Making Borders : Engaging the threat of Chinese textiles in Ghana
  • 2012
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The borders of the twenty-first century come in many forms and are performed by an increasing number of actors in a broad variety of places, both within and beyond the territories of nation-states. This thesis sets out a detailed political geography of how borders operate to reconcile the often conflicting demands of open markets and security. Focusing on Ghana, where there is a widespread fear that the inflow of Chinese versions of African prints will lead to the collapse of the local textile industry, the study explores where and when borders are enforced, who performs them and what kinds of borders are enacted in order to maintain and protect the Ghanaian nation and market without compromising the country’s status as a liberal economy. It combines interviews and documentary sources with analysis drawn from border, security and migration studies to explore three sets of spatial strategies that have defined the Ghanaian approach to the perceived threat of Chinese African prints. They are the institution of a single corridor for African print imports, the anti-counterfeiting raids carried out in Ghana’s marketplaces, and the promotion of garments made from locally produced textiles as office wear through the National Friday Wear and Everyday Wear programmes. These strategies stretch, disperse and embody the borders of the state or nation to control trade in ways that resolve the fears of both open flows and closed borders. This thesis thus seeks to show how a geographical analysis can clarify the specificities of how borders now work to control mobility. In doing so, it not only unsettles conventional assumptions about what borders are and where they are supposed to be located, but also the idea that borders primarily are used to constrain the mobility of certain people while facilitating economic flows. Furthermore, this thesis adds to the understanding of the variety of responses to the inflow of Chinese consumer products to the African continent.

  • Distance driven and driving speed when forwarding during final felling in Central Sweden
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Forest Science. - 1212-4834 .- 1805-935X. ; 65, s. 183-194
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Factors affecting forwarding work are interesting because they can be used to better optimize forwarding routes and to predict costs. The main objective of this study was to investigate the association between driving speed and driving distance when forwarding. Data was automatically collected during 2.5 years from two large forwarders operating during final felling in central Sweden. Driving speeds for the work tasks Driving unloaded, Loading drive and Driving loaded were analysed using correlation, least-squares regression, and quantile regression. The results showed that speed and distance were strongly correlated for the work element Driving unloaded, while the correlation was weaker for Loading drive and Driving loaded. Possible factors leading to these results are as follows: longer travelling distances stimulate better planning and the establishment of better extraction roads; operators may feel stressed and drive faster as travelling distance increases; and finally, the relative influence of accelerations and decelerations decreases with increasing driving distance. Also, the use of quantile regression was successful and provided information that normal least-squares regression does not provide.

  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the XIII EURALEX International Congress (Barcelona 15-19 juli 2008). - 9788496742673 ; , s. 291-296
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • SAOL Plus – a new Swedish electronic dictionary System requirements: Windows 98/NT/2000/XP/Vista In September 2007, a CD version of the Swedish Academy Glossary (SAOL) was released, SAOL Plus, which includes all used inflected forms and an advanced Fuzzy Search option, based on pronunciation. The printed version has loong been considered the (unofficial) norm for spelling, inflection and pronunciation of Swedish. It is not a traditional dictionary with complete definitions, although many lemmas are defined or commented. It contains 125 000 lemmas, which is about twice as many as other Swedish monolingual dictionaries. SAOL Plus has the standard search functions, as well as more advanced search options due to the electronic format, such as article search and truncation search. It contains more inflected forms in number and detail than the printed version, and these are shown in full text and made searchable. Thanks to its built-in tool for Fuzzy Search, SAOL Plus is very useful for people with reading and writing disorders, as well as for those for whom Swedish is a second language. SAOL Plus can be an asset for the public as well as for linguists, teachers etc. SMDB, the Swedish Morphological Database, contains all lemmas from SAOL and their inflected forms, morpho-syntactically tagged. However, the database is constructed from all theoretically possible inflections of the lemmas. Some inflections are not grammatically correct or generally accepted, and therefore it has been necessary to extract the semantically plausible forms. Via a tag program connected to a 200 million word corpus, frequency of occurrence of specific word forms can easily be extracted. One challenge has been to scrutinize one million word forms in order to decide which forms should be presented on the cd. SAOL Plus has a tool called Fuzzy Search, which efficiently handles misspelling. This helps the user get to the target word, even if the user doesn’t know how it is spelled. The module for handling misspelling is based on both pronunciation and transposition of letters. The Fuzzy Search can easily be used as a spell-checker together with Word. To the best of our knowledge, this fuzzy search (and spell-checker) based on pronunciation, has few equivalents in its field.

  • High levels of antigen-specific islet antibodies predict future β-cell failure in patients with onset of diabetes in adult age
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism. - : The Endocrine Society. - 0021-972X. ; 86:7, s. 3032-3038
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It is unclear whether high levels of antigen-specific islet antibodies [GADA (glutamic acid decarboxylase 65 antibodies) and IA2-ab (protein tyrosine phosphatase-like protein antibodies)] predict β-cell failure in patients with onset of diabetes in adult age. Therefore, GADA and IA2-ab levels at the diagnosis of diabetes were related to fasting plasma C-peptide levels 5 yr later in 148 patients with diabetes onset in adult age (age at onset, 20-77 yr; median, 57 yr). Classical islet cell antibodies (ICA) were also determined. Complete β-cell failure (undetectable fasting plasma C-peptide) was only present in 4 patients at diagnosis of diabetes, but in 21 patients 5 yr thereafter. At diagnosis, ICA were detected in 20 of 21 (95%) patients with β-cell failure after 5 yr and in only 7 of 127 (5%) without, whereas GADA and/or IA2-ab (>97.5 percentile of healthy controls) were detected in all 21 (100%) with but also in 23 of 127 (18%) patients without β-cell failure after 5 yr. Thus, ICA had a higher positive predictive value (74%) than GADA and/or IA2-ab (47%; P < 0.05). With high cutoff values for GADA and IA2-ab, however, GADA and/or IA2-ab were detected in 19 of 21 (90%) patients with β-cell failure vs. only in 5 of 127 (4%) without, giving a positive predictive value of 79%. Slightly elevated GADA levels in IA2-ab-negative patients were associated with progressive but not complete β-cell failure within the study period. Hence, high GADA and/or IA2-ab levels predict a future complete β-cell failure, whereas low GADA levels predict slowly progressive β-cell insufficiency.

  • Sustainable management of combustible household waste-Expanding the integrated evaluation model
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Resources, Conservation and Recycling. - : Elsevier BV. - 0921-3449 .- 1879-0658. ; 52:8-9, s. 1101-1111
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A previously described model for the evaluation of sustainability in waste management has been expanded and applied to biodegradable and other combustible household waste. The model was applied to a case-study focusing on the special conditions in a municipality in the sparsely populated region of northern Sweden. In this region it is usual that the collection distances are long, the volume of waste is low and treatment facilities are remote. Four scenarios for the management of municipal household waste were compared: incineration, anaerobic digestion, composting and landfilling. A system analysis was performed to ensure that each scenario fulfil all the functions that the waste could provide (heat, electricity, fuel, and soil with a high nutrient content) and a sensitivity analysis was carried out to test the reliability of the results. The results show that the evaluation model can be used to assess the sustainability aspects of different treatment scenarios for combustible household waste. The model also allows for an individual interpretation of the results presented, depending on the choice of priorities. The effects of varying the time horizons and the difference in impact depending on what fuels are ultimately replaced in energy production are discussed.

  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Small Business Economics. - : Springer. - 0921-898X .- 1573-0913.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introducing the Knowledge Spillover Theory of Intrapreneurship, we examine how labour mobility impacts innovation distributed by firm size. A matched employer-employee dataset, pooled with firm-level patent application data, is implemented in the analysis. We provide new evidence that knowledge workers’ mobility has a positive and strongly significant impact on all firms’ innovation output, measured as patent applications. The patterns and effects do however differ between large and small firms. More precisely, for small firms, intraregional mobility of knowledge workers who have previously worked in a patenting firm (the learning-by-hiring effect) is shown to be statistically and economically highly significant, whereas only limited impact could be detected for firms losing knowledge workers (the learning-by-diaspora effect).

  • The missing link : knowledge diffusion and entrepreneurship in endogenous growth
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Small Business Economics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0921-898X .- 1573-0913. ; 34:2, s. 105-125
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The intellectual breakthrough contributed by the new growth theory was the recognition that investments in knowledge and human capital endogenously generate economic growth through the spillover of knowledge. However, endogenous growth theory does not explain how or why spillovers occur. This paper presents a model that shows how growth depends on knowledge accumulation and its diffusion through both incumbents and entrepreneurial activities. We claim that entrepreneurs are one missing link in converting knowledge into economically relevant knowledge. Implementing different regression techniques for the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries during 1981 to 2002 provides surprisingly robust evidence that primarily entrepreneurs contributed to growth and that the importance of entrepreneurs increased in the 1990s. A Granger test confirms that causality goes in the direction from entrepreneurs to growth. The results indicate that policies facilitating entrepreneurship are an important tool to enhance knowledge diffusion and promote economic growth.

  • Users’ role in innovation processes in the sports equipment industry : experiences and lessons
  • 2009
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The main objective of this project is to contribute to our knowledge about user-driven innovation and to suggest how knowledge on user-driven innovation may be included in innovation efforts and systems both for the sports equipment industry and for other industries. The study is primarily based on case studies of how firms within the Nordic sports equipment and outdoor industry involve users in their innovation efforts. Our studies concentrate on firms producing equipment for winter sport and outdoor recreation. The study builds upon a large number of interviews with firms and key persons as well as extensive analysis of available written material and research literature. The results focus on the identification of certain key user groups in the sports equipment innovation cycle: user innovators, professional and sponsored users, enthusiastic amateurs, passionate insiders and chains and retailers. We consider the extent to which these users influence or take part in innovation processes within technical design, visual design, branding and the development of product systems. The report concludes with policy recommendations for how firms may take advantage of each user group. In this respect we present some key points and examples on firms’ interaction with users in innovation processes. Other recommendations consider public policy and suggest that public policy ought to encourage firms to take advantage of knowledge held by those groups. In society a large number of user groups exist and public policy ought to stimulate use of their knowledge for a broader purpose, including societal development. Merging user groups in order to stimulate cross sector development, in addition to organising meeting places may be a theme for public policy at the regional level.

  • α Decay of High-K Isomers in 270Ds and 266Hs in a Superfluid Tunneling Model
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. - 2469-9985. ; 97:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We use the superfluid tunneling model (STM) to calculate the half-lives of ground-state α decays of even-even superheavy nuclei (SHN) with Z≥100. The experimental data are reproduced to accuracies comparable to other contemporary models of α decay of SHN. We apply the STM to the case of the α decaying high-K isomers identified in the decay chains of 270Ds. By accounting for the α-decay Q values, Qα, the angular momentum difference between initial and final states, L, and a reduction in the pairing gap, Δ, we are able to reproduce the observed α decay of the isomers, including the unusual competition between L≈10 and L≈0 α branches seen for the K isomer in 270Ds (Z=110).

  • α decay of high-spin isomers in N = 84 isotones
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. - 2469-9985. ; 99:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The superfluid tunneling model is applied to the calculation of half-lives of the observed α decays in N=84 isotones. Results of our calculations are compared to experimental data on the ground-state α decays along the isotonic chain from 144Nd to 159Re. Good agreement is found. The α decays of the known high-spin isomers in 155Lu, 156Hf, 157Ta, and 158W are also well reproduced, once a reduction in the pairing strength is taken into account. This includes reproduction of the main features of the recently observed fine structure from 155Lu (25/2-) and 156Hf (8+). Predictions for the α-decay fine structure of 157Ta (25/2-) and 158W (8+) high-spin isomers are presented.
