  • Investigations on the possibilities of a MISiCFET sensor system for OBD and combustion control utilizing different catalytic gate materials
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Topics in catalysis. - 1022-5528 .- 1572-9028. ; 30-31:1, s. 365-368
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Different catalytic materials, like Pt and Ir, applied as gate contacts on metal insulator silicon carbide field effect transistors — MISiCFET—facilitate the manufacture of gas sensor devices with differences in selectivity, devices which due to the chemical stability and wide band gap of SiC are suitable for high temperature applications. The combination of such devices in a sensor system, utilizing multivariate analysis/modeling, have been tested and some promising results in respect of monitoring a few typical exhaust and flue gas constituents, in the future aiming at on board diagnostics (OBD) and combustion control, have been obtained.

  • No radiation protection reasons for restrictions on C-14 urea breath tests in children.
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: British Journal of Radiology. - : British Institute of Radiology. - 1748-880X .- 0007-1285. ; 75:900, s. 982-986
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Traditional 14C urea breath tests are normally not used for younger children because the radiation exposure is unknown. High sensitivity accelerator mass spectrometry and an ultra-low amount (440 Bq) of 14C urea were therefore used both to diagnose Helicobacter pylori (HP) infection in seven children, aged 3–6 years, and to make radiation dose estimates. The activity used was 125 times lower than the amount normally used for older children and 250 times lower than that used for adults. Results were compared with previously reported biokinetic and dosimetric data for adults and older children aged 7–14 years. 14C activity concentrations in urine and exhaled air per unit administered activity for younger children (3–6 years) correspond well with those for older children (7–14 years). For a child aged 3–6 years who is HP negative, the urinary bladder wall receives the highest absorbed dose, 0.3 mGy MBq-1. The effective dose is 0.1 mSv MBq-1 for the 3-year-old child and 0.07 mSv MBq-1 for the 6-year-old child. For two children, the 10 min and 20 min post-14C administration samples of exhaled air showed a significantly higher amount of 14C activity than for the rest of the children, that is 6% and 19% of administered activity exhaled per hour compared with 0.3–0.9% (mean 0.5%) of administered activity exhaled per hour indicating that these two children that is were HP positive. For a 3-year-old HP positive child, absorbed dose to the urinary bladder wall was 0.3 mGy MBq-1 and effective dose per unit of administered activity was 0.4 mSv MBq-1. Using 55 kBq, which is a normal amount for older children when liquid scintillation counters are used for measurement, the effective dose will be approximately 6 µSv to a 3-year-old HP negative child and 20 µSv to a HP positive child. Thus there is no reason for restrictions on performing a normal 14C urea breath test, even on young children.

  • The H2-Ab gene influences the severity of experimental allergic encephalomyelitis induced by proteolipoprotein peptide 103-116
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Journal of Neuroimmunology. - 1872-8421. ; 120:1-2, s. 25-33
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Immunization of H2(p) and H2(q) congenic C3H mouse strains with the PLP 103-116 peptide elicited two distinct experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE) disease courses. C3H.Q (H2(q)) mice developed an acute-phase disease with classical ascending paralytic signs whereas C3H.NB (H2(p)) developed a highly variable disease course with symptoms originating from CNS above the spinal chord. C3H.Q lacks functional H2-E molecules and share H2-Aalpha with C3H.NB. To examine if the differences found at positions 85, 86, 88, and 89 in the Abeta-chains account for disease susceptibility, H2(q) mice were made transgenic with the Ab(p) gene. The Ab(p)-transgenic mice on the C3H.Q background developed a more severe disease course, demonstrating the importance of class II. However, the onset was not affected and the disease showed a classical ascending paralysis similar to the C3H.Q suggesting that the observed brain symptoms were related to nonclass II genes. Inhibition studies performed on affinity purified MHC class II molecules indicated that the PLP 103-116 peptide bound to A(p) with slightly higher affinity than to A(q). Both A(q) and A(p) formed long-lived stable complexes (t(1/2)>24 h) with the PLP 103-116 peptide, but a higher amount of the peptide was loaded on to A(p) compared with A(q). An F2 gene segregation experiment, in which the low PLP 103-116 binding A(r) molecule and the high binding A(p) molecule could be compared for the influence on the disease susceptibility, indicated a role for both peptide binding affinity and non-MHC genes. Based on our results, we conclude that the H2-Ab gene controls severity of EAE but not necessarily the onset or type of disease course and that affinity of the disease-promoting peptide for the class II molecule is a critical pathogenic factor.

  • Nimodipine promotes regeneration and functional recovery after intracranial facial nerve crush
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Journal of Comparative Neurology. - : Wiley. - 0021-9967 .- 1096-9861. ; 347:1, s. 106-117
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The calcium flow inhibitor, nimodipine, has been shown to promote motor neuron survival in the facial nucleus after intracranial facial nerve transection. However, it has not been known whether the neuroprotective effects primarily involve survival of nerve cell bodies or outgrowth and/or myelination of nerve fibers. Here, we studied the effects of nimodipine in a different injury model in which the facial nerve was unilaterally crushed intracranially. This lesion caused complete anterograde degeneration and partial retrograde degeneration that were studied with a combination of several stereological methods. Nimodipine did not attenuate the modest lesion-induced neuronal loss (13%) but accelerated the time course of functional recovery and axonal regrowth, inducing increased numbers and sizes of myelinated axons in the facial nerve. It is interesting to note that nimodipine also enlarged the axons and the myelin sheaths in the nonlesioned facial nerve, which points to the possibility of using this substance for new clinical applications to promote axonal growth and remyelination.

  • Swedish Cancer Society radiation therapy research investigation
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Acta Oncologica. - 0284-186X .- 1651-226X. ; 41:7-8, s. 596-603
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In an investigation by the Swedish Cancer Society, the present status, critical issues and future aspects and prospects were described by an expert group for each of nine major areas of radiation research. A summary of the investigation is presented in this report. A more extensive summary (in Swedish) can be found at www.Cancerfonden.se. It is concluded that radiation therapy plays an increasingly important role in curative and palliative tumour treatment and presents a considerable challenge to research. Several suggestions are made that could improve the possibilities for high-quality radiation therapy research in Sweden.

  • A Quality-Driven Decision Support Method for Identifying Software Architecture Candidates
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: International journal of software engineering and knowledge engineering. - Singapore : World Scientific. - 0218-1940. ; 13:5, s. 547-573
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To sustain the qualities of a software system during evolution, and to adapt the quality attributes as the requirements evolve, it is necessary to have a clear software architecture that is understood by all developers and to which all changes to the system adheres. This software architecture can be created beforehand, but must also be updated as the domain of the software, and hence the requirements on the software system evolve. Creating a software architecture for a system or part of a system so that the architecture fulfils the desired quality requirements is often hard. We propose a decision-support method to aid in the understanding of different architecture candidates for a software system. We propose a method that is adaptable with respect to both the set of potential architecture candidates and quality attributes relevant for the system's domain to help in this task. The method creates a support framework, using a multicriteria decision method, supporting comparison of different software architecture candidates for a specific software quality attribute and vice versa, and then uses this support framework to reach a consensus on the benefits and liabilities of the different software architecture candidates and to increase the confidence in the resulting architecture decision.

  • Conditions and Restrictions for Product Line Generation Migration.
  • 2002
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we describe a case study of a company in the domain of automatic guided vehicles (AGVs) that is in the process of migrating from a previous generation of a software product line, which has mainly been centered around hardware, into a new product-line generation which is software-centered. We describe the issues motivating this transition and the factors that complicate it. Moreover, we present a three-stage process for migrating to a new software product line. This process is currently being initiated in collaboration with the aforementioned company.

  • Identification of genes predominantly expressed in human macrophages
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Atherosclerosis. - : Elsevier BV. ; 177, s. 287-290
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Identification of cell and tissue specific genes may provide novel insights to signaling systems and functions. Macrophages play a key role in many diseases including atherosclerosis. Using DNA microarrays we compared the expression of approximately 10,000 genes in 56 human tissues and identified 23 genes with predominant expression in macrophages. The identified genes include both genes known to be macrophage specific and genes previously not well described in this cell type. Tissue distribution of two genes, liver X receptor (LXR) alpha and interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL1RN), was verified by real-time RT-PCR. We conclude that comparison of expression profiles from a large number of tissues can be used to identify genes that are predominantly expressed in certain tissues. Identification of novel macrophage specific genes may increase our understanding of the role of this cell in different diseases.

  • MISiCFET chemical sensors for applications in exhaust gases and flue gases
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Materials Science Forum. - 0255-5476 .- 1662-9752. ; 433-4, s. 953-956
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A chemical gas sensor based on a silicon carbide field effect transistor with a catalytic gate metal has been under development for a number of years. The choice of silicon carbide as the semiconductor material allows the sensor to operate at high temperatures, for more than 6 months in flue gases at 300degreesC and for at least three days at 700degreesC. The chemical inertness of silicon carbide and a buried gate design makes it a suitable sensor technology for applications in corrosive environments such as exhaust gases and flue gases from boilers. The selectivity of the sensor devices is established through the choice of type and structure of the gate metal as well as the operation temperature. In this way NH3 sensors with low cross sensitivity to NOx have been demonstrated as potential sensors for control of selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx by urea injection into diesel exhausts. Here we show that sensors with a porous platinum or iridium gate show different temperature ranges for NH3 detection. The hardness of the silicon carbide makes it for example more resistant to water splash at cold start of a petrol engine than existing technologies, and a sensor which can control the air to fuel ratio, before the exhaust gases are heated, has been demonstrated. Silicon carbide sensors are also tested in flue gases from boilers. Efficient regulation of the combustion in a boiler will decrease fuel consumption and reduce emissions.
