  • A Study of some Approaches to Vibration Data Analysis
  • 1993
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Using data from extensive vibrational tests of the new aircraft Saab 2000 three different methods for vibration analysis are studied. These methods are ERA (eigensystem realization algorithm), N4SID (a subspace method) and PEM (prediction error approach). We find that both the ERA and N4SID methods give good initial model parameter estimates that can be further improved by the use of PEM. We also find that all methods give good insights into the vibrational modes.

  • On robust optical flow estimation on image sequences with differently exposed frames using primal-dual optimization
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Image and Vision Computing. - : Elsevier BV. - 0262-8856. ; 57, s. 78-88
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Optical flow methods are used to estimate pixelwise motion information based on consecutive frames in image sequences. The image sequences traditionally contain frames that are similarly exposed. However, many real-world scenes contain high dynamic range content that cannot be captured well with a single exposure setting. Such scenes result in certain image regions being over- or underexposed, which can negatively impact the quality of motion estimates in those regions. Motivated by this, we propose to capture high dynamic range scenes using different exposure settings every other frame. A framework for OF estimation on such image sequences is presented, that can straightforwardly integrate techniques from the state-of-the-art in conventional OF methods. Different aspects of robustness of OF methods are discussed, including estimation of large displacements and robustness to natural illumination changes that occur between the frames, and we demonstrate experimentally how to handle such challenging flow estimation scenarios. The flow estimation is formulated as an optimization problem whose solution is obtained using an efficient primal–dual method.

  • Optical flow estimation on image sequences with differently exposed frames
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Optical Engineering. - 1560-2303 .- 0091-3286. ; 54:9, s. Article Number: 093103-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Optical flow (OF) methods are used to estimate dense motion information between consecutive frames in image sequences. In addition to the specific OF estimation method itself, the quality of the input image sequence is of crucial importance to the quality of the resulting flow estimates. For instance, lack of texture in image frames caused by saturation of the camera sensor during exposure can significantly deteriorate the performance. An approach to avoid this negative effect is to use different camera settings when capturing the individual frames. We provide a framework for OF estimation on such sequences that contain differently exposed frames. Information from multiple frames are combined into a total cost functional such that the lack of an active data term for saturated image areas is avoided. Experimental results demonstrate that using alternate camera settings to capture the full dynamic range of an underlying scene can clearly improve the quality of flow estimates. When saturation of image data is significant, the proposed methods show superior performance in terms of lower endpoint errors of the flow vectors compared to a set of baseline methods. Furthermore, we provide some qualitative examples of how and when our method should be used.

  • Super-resolution reconstruction of high dynamic range images in a perceptually uniform domain
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Optical Engineering. - 1560-2303 .- 0091-3286. ; 52:10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Super resolution is a signal processing method that utilizesinformation from multiple degraded images of the same scene in order to reconstruct an image with enhanced spatial resolution. The method is typically employed on similarly exposed pixel valued images, but it can be extended to differently exposed images with a high combined dynamicrange. We propose a novel formulation of the joint super-resolution, high dynamic range image reconstruction problem, using an image domain in which the residual function of the inverse problem relates to the perception of the human visual system. Simulated results are presented, including a comparison with a conventional method, demonstrating that the proposed approach avoids some severe reconstruction artifacts.

    • Super-Resolution and High Dynamic Range image reconstruction are two different signal processing techniques that share in common that they utilize information from multiple observations of the same scene to enhance visual image quality. In this paper, both techniques are merged in a common model, and the focus is to solve the reconstruction problem in a suitable image domain, which relates to the perception of the Human Visual System. Simulated results are presented, including a comparison with a conventional method, demonstrating the benefits of the proposed approach, in this case avoiding some severe reconstruction artifacts.

  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering. - : SPIE. - 0277-786X .- 1996-756X. - 9781628415582 ; 9443, s. Art. no. 94431U-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Motion estimation of objects in image sequences is an essential computer vision task. To this end, optical flow methods compute pixel-level motion, with the purpose of providing low-level input to higher-level algorithms and applications. Robust flow estimation is crucial for the success of applications, which in turn depends on the quality of the captured image data. This work explores the use of sensor diversity in the image data within a framework for variational optical flow. In particular, a custom image sensor setup intended for vehicle applications is tested. Experimental results demonstrate the improved flow estimation performance when IR sensitivity or flash illumination is added to the system.

  • 2012
  • Ingår i: ESF-APE-INV workshop: “Scientists & Inventors” – KU Leuven, 10-11 May 2012.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Abstract: After the collection of data on Swedish academic inventors in 2011, we created a longitudinal dataset containing two points in time. The 2005 dataset has indicated that research intense universities take the most patents, a trend which still remains. We describe and analyze the dynamics within the different disciplines among the 6 universities with highest number of patents. For these 6 universities data from 2009 are combined and compared too. Preliminary results indicate that Sweden still performs better than other European countries, where data available.

  • Investigating the complexity facing academic entrepreneurs in science and engineering : the complementarities of research performance, networks and support structures in commercialisation
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Cambridge Journal of Economics. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0309-166X .- 1464-3545. ; 36:3, s. 751-780
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The relative importance, and specific role, of academic entrepreneurship in society has long focused upon productivity in terms of the commercialisation of research. Public policy is an instrument used in different countries to stimulate start-up companies, including attempts to influence national institutions, university structures and the incentives for individual researchers. This paper contributes with an analysis of Sweden, which has retained the 'professor's privilege', whereby the individual retains inventor rights and can choose to allocate ownership rights. The descriptive results of the survey revealed that academics have positive attitudes to commercialisation and relatively satisfactory commercialisation output. This paper examines the complementarities of research performance, networks and support structure in explaining commercialisation amongst university researchers in science and engineering in Sweden. The results show that publishing is positively correlated with commercialisation and that support structures play an important role through technology transfer offices, courses and incubators. The paper ends by using these results in order to discuss the implications for public policy.

  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Industry and Innovation. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1366-2716 .- 1469-8390. ; 16:1, s. 59-78
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In spite of a long-standing interest in the distribution of knowledge spillovers from university research, there is only limited theoretical understanding of if and when opportunities to interact with a research university constitute a significant force of attraction for globally mobile investment in RD. Based on an empirical investigation of the benefits of interaction with universities, this paper proposes an analytical framework and four ideal types of strategy for localised collaboration between RD subsidiaries and universities. This taxonomy, which largely transcends industry sectors, and the illustrative cases presented in this paper provide insights into the potential scope for localised university-industry interaction from the perspective of multinational enterprises. By connecting the empirical results to the question whether these benefits are significant enough to enhance a region's attractiveness as a location for RD, we are able to develop a better understanding of the alternative strategies for policymakers and university leaders interested in stimulating such linkages.

  • Ingår i: Small Business Economics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0921-898X .- 1573-0913. ; 41:4, s. 913-930
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Research on entrepreneurship has flourished in recent years and is evolving rapidly. This article explores the history of entrepreneurship research, how the research domain has evolved, and its current status as an academic field. The need to concretize these issues stems partly from a general interest in defining the current research domain and partly from the more specific tasks confronting the prize committee of the Global Award for Entrepreneurship Research. Entrepreneurship has developed in many sub-fields within several disciplines-primarily economics, management/business administration, sociology, psychology, economic and cultural anthropology, business history, strategy, marketing, finance, and geography-representing a variety of research traditions, perspectives, and methods. We present an analytical framework that organizes our thinking about the domain of entrepreneurship research by specifying elements, levels of analysis, and the process/context. An overview is provided of where the field stands today and how it is positioned relative to the existing disciplines and new research fields upon which it draws. Areas needed for future progress are highlighted, particularly the need for a rigorous dynamic theory of entrepreneurship that relates entrepreneurial activity to economic growth and human welfare. Moreover, applied work based on more careful design as well as on theoretical models yielding more credible and robust estimates seems also highly warranted.

  • How and why does cost efficiency of universities differ across European Universities? An explorative attempt using new micro data
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Bonaccorsi, A. (2014), Knowledge, Diversity and the Performance in European Higher Education. - Cheltenham, UK : Edward Elgar Publishers. - 9781783472000 ; , s. 267-291
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter analyses the cost efficiency of universities, through a cross analysis of universities in different European countries. The focus is on describing the cost efficiency of universities located in six countries, using new developed cross-national set of input and output variables, as well as series of exogenous variables. This approach allows us to explore cross-country variation in cost efficiency as well as the impact of institutional factors on efficiency variation. As such, we hope to contribute to the current debates in academic literature and policy circles about the various determinants of university performance and about the rationales for changing European higher education systems. Currently there are huge pressures to reform educational and research systems in European countries e.g. by providing better education to more people at a lower cost. Hence advances in understanding university performance across-national patterns are vital for further understanding and public policy reforms for the future. This chapter addresses how and why cost efficiency of universities differs across European countries.

  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Innovation Economics & Management. - : CAIRN. - 2032-5355. ; 1:19, s. 31-59
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Entrepreneurial activities are intricately linked to the discovery or creation of opportunities, in the innovation context. Many researches focus on the debate over the nature of opportunities (discovered or created) and more recently on the processes that form entrepreneurial opportunities. However little research investigates the innovation context as one of the attributes that would explain the type and the way opportunities are formed. As the success of entrepreneurial activities also depends on larger socio-cultural contexts, our particular interest in this paper is to explore the influence of specific localised innovation contexts on the opportunity formation process. We look at how an innovation context can become or fail to become an ecosystem forming or enhancing the opportunities (i.e. by providing the relevant technical and market knowledge), resulting in entrepreneurial activities. The study of two specific cases in this paper found two patterns of entrepreneurial process, as the result of two different contexts in which opportunities are in one case discovered or created in the other case.

    • This chapter analyzes the main results, in terms of the four horizontal themes, namely ‘Emergent Strategies; Diversification and Specialization; Rethinking University-Industry Relations; and ‘Reflections’ This part of the chapter focuses upon what we have learnt theoretically and empirically about European universities learning to compete, through this book. The main focus of this chapter is on the implications for the future, of this new competitive regime, as universities, institutes of technologies and colleges move from social institutions to knowledge businesses. The future implications are presented in terms of restructuring the university sector at the macro level and in terms of strategies at the micro level. Hence, these conclusions are particularly relevant both for public policy and for decision-makers within universities, at all levels ranging from heads of research groups to vice chancellors and presidents.

  • Universities as Strategic Actors in the Knowlege Economy
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Cambridge Journal of Economics. - 1464-3545 .- 0309-166X. ; 36:3, s. 525-541
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The university plays a particular role in the global knowledge economy, as provider of both public and private goods related to education, research, and societal impacts. At the same time, universities in the plural play many different roles, and exhibit a rich experimentation in organizational forms and knowledge foci, adapting to local and global conditions. There is also an aspect of uneven regional development and agglomeration of competencies, as the individuals and organizations must also balance local interests and stakeholders with global networks in science, technology and innovation. Thus, we can identify empirically that universities are changing their strategies, organizational structures and competencies, in order to respond to new external demands and internal management practices (Bonaccorsi and Daraio 2007). The question is how to explain this theoretically and identify empirical trends and pathways. Little previous research has focused upon how universities are learning to compete and why they try to act strategically. This article, as well as the selected articles in the special issue, focus upon how and why this transition is occurring as well as the impacts for understanding universities as strategic actors in the knowledge economy. Section 2 provides an overview. It introduces the three themes and articles collected in this special issue, providing a summary of the main contributions. Section 3 then provides our perspective on how to analyze and understand universities as strategic actors. It discusses relevant literature, as a way of beginning to provide our perspective of the necessity, and elements involved, in a more united theoretical and empirical understanding. This includes statement of predictions, as well as empirical evidence that these trends are occurring. Section 4 concludes with relevant research themes for the future

  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This chapter asks what competition may mean for universities and other higher education institutions. The modern rhetoric states that universities compete but is hardly very precise in formulating what this entails. This chapter describes an evolutionary economics and innovation management perspective for understanding international trends and the responses of specific universities, but also comments upon the limits to such competition as regulated by government, laws etc. The chapter portrays universities as knowledge based service providers with a set of different stakeholders (students, firms, governments). From a selection perspective, the chapter analyses what type of outputs these stakeholders are interested in and what metrics there are in terms of assessing these outputs. This analysis is conducted in terms of characteristics of the university sectors in terms of value, resources and appropriation for education, research and ‘innovation’. This chapter thus addresses what competition and transformation mean for universities, focusing on universities within a global sector providing knowledge-based services.

  • To what extent do external sources of knowledge affect the innovative performance of knowledge intensive entrepreneurial firms? The effects of depth and breadth of openness on manufacturing and service innovations
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: DRUID Society conference 2015, Rome, June 15-17. ; 2015:2466
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper examines the effects of breadth and depth of external knowledge sourcing on the innovativeness of a specific classification of organization, the knowledge intensive entrepreneurial (KIE) firm. This type of firm has been observed as being critically important to growth and development in modern economies, yet how it uses external knowledge sources for innovation has received little direct attention in the literature. Using data from the EU?s recent AEGIS project, investigating knowledge intensive entrepreneurship in Europe covering just over 4000 entrepreneurial firms, this paper uses fractional logit models, as well as an OLS model based on alternating least squares optimal scaling (ALSOS), to estimate the relationship between breadth and depth of external knowledge sourcing and that of innovative performance of the KIE firm. We find that breadth is curvi-linearly related to innovative performance in KIE firms, but that depth, while related to innovativeness, does not assume this functional form. Additionally, a principal components analysis reveals that non-industry sources of knowledge in the form of state, national, or regional research-based or academic entities, as well as knowledge in the form of academic and trade publications, are statistically significant/relevant as external sources of knowledge for innovation in KIE firms. Industry sources of knowledge such as clients, customers, and supplier are statistically significant sources only for innovation in goods, not in terms of innovation in services, or novelty of innovations produced. Recommendations for future research and policy implications are provided based on these findings.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper explains why capitalistic economies are restless by focusing on the role and the activities by entrepreneurs. The linkage between the entrepreneur and the economy is that as knowledge is a scarce resource, entrepreneurs must economize knowledge to reduce uncertainty if they are to undertake entrepreneurial action. Fortunately, ways of lowering uncertainty are important sources of opportunities for entrepreneurs. How- ever, the exploitation of such sources may in turn increase uncertainty in the economy. Thus, entrepreneurial action reduces and regenerates uncertainty and complexity over time across different dimensions in the economic system. The paper argues that these processes are core mechanisms of economic development, creating interdependencies between the entrepreneur and the economic system.

We analyze the development of the nanotechnology industry in Suzhou and the electrical vehicle industry in Hangzhou. They are used as cases to analyze the role of local government, and we do so from four aspects, namely technology, human capital, market and finance. In these cases, the local government helped the emerging industry not only in stimulating technological collaboration but also in creating market demand. While the local governments stimulated all four aspects listed above, the incentive to create demand has been particularly crucial.

  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An aspect of innovation spaces in China is the development of entrepreneurship in advanced sectors, addressed here. The main focus is upon how four ventures within nanotechnology can develop, through analysing interactions between key variables within the model of knowledge intensive entrepreneurship. Nano represents a series of emerging technologies, and ones that are often seen to be ones that are interdisciplinary and involve a distributed form of knowledge amongst many different actors such as universities, existing large firms, and entrepreneurial firms. The rapid development of science-based industries of nanotechnology is one based on ample technological and market opportunities, and these opportunities are being created between the entrepreneur (person), the entrepreneurial venture (organization) and the national innovation system. Analytical focus is put on the role of regional and institutional support such as the government loans and the science park as well as the specific characteristics of the founders, including international networks. The chapter focuses upon four in-depth case study of Chinese firms, based in Suzhou Industrial Park. The firms are Beaver Nano-Technologies Co., Ltd; Poynova Materials Suzhou Ltd; Hanano; and Nano-Micro Technology Company.

The paper will particularly focus upon the evolution of firm capabilities for innovation and development. The firms studied all have a long-term engagement in the Chinese market. All firms are in industry code 70000/100/200/300 , they are foreign multi-nationals, headquartered now or previously in Sweden, and with significantly increasing activity and market share in China. The research methodology is based upon interviews with informed experts, who have worked for many years for these companies, including in China. Moreover, the activities of these MNCs in China have intensified over the years, from production to more development and research activities.

  • Can public policy create sustainable and long-term effects on industry? Conceptual issues and the case of life sciences for innovative food in Sweden
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: International Schumpeter Society Conference.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper addresses the question what role public policy can play for connecting industry and public research organizations, i.e. what types of long-term goals and effects on industry can one reasonably expect? The present study analyzes 66 projects co-funded by the Swedish government agency Vinnova in the food area. The analysis showed that the Swedish policy in the area of innovative food was ‘needs-driven’ and explicitly designed to get university researchers and firms to interact. We also found that the manner in which the firms were involved in research varied greatly, but that in general this interaction was considered important in order to access knowledge and solve problems. Many projects were identified as providing benefits in commercialization activities. However, the actual product development usually occurred inside the boundaries of the firm. Furthermore, companies may have incentives to collaborate in order to ‘brand’ their products as high quality and to support marketing. Another valuable result of the policy was increasing labor mobility, that is, companies hiring PhDs. Finally, it can be concluded that given the global character of the food industry it seems that the pursued policy have contributed to make Sweden a more attractive place for industrial R&D investments

  • Cultural and Creative Entrepreneurship: A new research agenda?
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Book of abstracts of the 6th CIM Community Workshop.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Cultural and creative entrepreneurship are topics which during the past decade has increased significantly in relevance. This can be detected in numerous ways; e.g. increasing research attention, increasing publication outlets, increasing number of academic programs offering education tailored specifically to this context. One reason why cultural activities and creative industries have come into focus is the recognition that value realization takes place in different manners in and across different spheres. Where economists tend to focus on the spheres of the private company – implying that market and government are the central mechanisms for value realization – activities in the cultural and creative spheres have also proven to be important domains of significant value realization. For example, DiMaggio in his seminal 1982 paper demonstrated that founders of institutions for high culture would combine their interest in the arts with a willingness to assume responsibility, and thereby converting cultural institutions into significant business opportunities. Such insights clearly parallel what we find in, for example, Schumpeter’s definition of the entrepreneur, characterized as a risk- taker who stimulates change and captures business opportunities. Focus on entrepreneurship in these contexts, may in fact involve entirely new types of expression of value creation. For example, consider the British street artist Banksy, who in spite of (or maybe even due to) his controversial political messages and explicit rejection of normal market mechanisms (supplier-customer relations) has become a highly esteemed (and highly priced) artist and entrepreneur. Entrepreneurship and value creation in these spheres is argued to be activated through different mechanisms than purely financial market mechanisms. Often times we see aspect of social values being at the center of the value realization; like community, a sense of identity, solidarity, neighborhood, security, conviviality, friendship, and so on. It is this informal sphere, more generally denoted as civil society, that is critical for the realization of the cultural values (see e.g. Bendixen, 2000; Jeffcut and Pratt, 2002; Konrad, 2013).

  • Knowledge Intensive Entrepreneurial Firms Exploring Innovative Opportunities in High Tech Sectors: The case of open innovation
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: AEGIS Deliverables and Reports Series.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper serves to analyse how the strategies for development pursued by knowledge intensive (KIE) ventures are influenced by Open Innovation thinking. This is done through the development of a conceptual framework for analysing this relationship, and the application of this framework empirically through six in-depth case studies of KIE ventures. It is found that there is a very high degree of similarities between the KIE strategies and Open Innovation thinking. In particular the exchange, development, and application of knowledge generated externally to the KIE ventures is a strikingly similar feature.

  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The overall question dealt with in this paper is how and why KIE firms engage in international development. Based on five in-depth case studies we illustrate that in addition to the well-known factors of internationalization, KIE ventures show a number of anomalies, suggesting that KIE ventures internationalise for different reasons and in different manners than what has normally been portrayed in International Business literature. We argue that such findings hold significant consequences for understanding future Asia-Euro collaboration, where traditional roles of European development vs. Asian manufacturing are challenged

  • Learning to Compete in European Universities: From Social Institutions to Knowledge Business
  • 2009
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This book Learning to Compete in European Universities: From Societal Institutions to Knowledge Businesses will challenge the reader by asking how and why European universities are changing and learning to compete. Anglo-Saxon universities in especially USA, UK and Australia have been subject to, and responded to market-based competition in higher education for a long time. We will argue that Continental and Nordic universities and higher education institutes (HEI) are now facing similar pressures that are leading to structural transformation of the university sector. Thus, one of the major societal institutions in Europe is undergoing transformation, and becoming a knowledge business. Regardless of whether one believes that this increasing competition has positive or negative effects, the transformation will affect academics and students, as well as the ability of firms and nations to compete in the global knowledge society. This book provides some steps towards explaining what is going on; towards analyzing how individuals, groups and organizations are responding; and towards discussing the implications for society and universities.

  • Academic Patenting in Europe: Evidence on France, Italy from the KEINS database
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Research Evaluation. ; 17:2 (June), s. 16-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper provides summary statistics from the KEINS database on academic patenting in France,Italy, and Sweden. It shows that academic scientists in those countries have signed many more patentsthan previously estimated. This re-evaluation of academic patenting comes by considering all patentssigned by academic scientists active in 2004, both those assigned to universities and the many moreheld by business companies, governmental organizations, and public laboratories. Specific institutionalfeatures of the university and research systems in the three countries contribute to explaining theseownership patterns, which are remarkably different from those observed in the USA. In the light ofthese new data, European universities’ contribution to domestic patenting appears not to be much lessintense than that of their US counterparts.

  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This chapter asks whether national institutions determine patenting behaviour of academics located in three different European countries. The chapter uses the CESPRI database on EPO patents, in connection with cleaned patent data, and gathered by researcher, for each of the three countries over the period 1978 to 2004. We would expect differing national institutions affect propensity to patent. However, the results indicate that the patenting patterns are similar across the countries, and also within scientific disciplines across countries. Comparisons are made with evidence from the USA, indicating similar levels of academic patenting and firm involvement. The chapter thus focuses upon the patenting of academics at the individual level, and uses that data to describe the patenting behaviour in terms of countries and disciplines.

  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Industry and Innovation. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1366-2716 .- 1469-8390. ; 20:5, s. 437-487
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper analyzes the relationship between academic inventors and firms, focusing on the relation between academic inventors, the technological profiles of firms and patent value. In particular, this paper focuses on the value of academic patents as compared to non-academic patents, owned by large firms based in Sweden. One finding is that academic patents have a short-term disadvantage, which disappears in the long-term. Our results also indicate that controlling for whether the patent belongs to a core or non-core technology relative to the firm’s technological profile neutralizes the premium of non-academic patents. In other words, patents belonging to firms’ core technologies have significantly higher value, regardless of whether they are academic or non-academic patents. The above results indicate that the technological profile of firms is an important characteristic to analyze, when examining the value of academic patents and the specific role that academics play in industrial invention.
