  • Euclid : Forecasts from redshift-space distortions and the Alcock-Paczynski test with cosmic voids

    • Euclid is poised to survey galaxies across a cosmological volume of unprecedented size, providing observations of more than a billion objects distributed over a third of the full sky. Approximately 20 million of these galaxies will have their spectroscopy available, allowing us to map the three-dimensional large-scale structure of the Universe in great detail. This paper investigates prospects for the detection of cosmic voids therein and the unique benefit they provide for cosmological studies. In particular, we study the imprints of dynamic (redshift-space) and geometric (Alcock-Paczynski) distortions of average void shapes and their constraining power on the growth of structure and cosmological distance ratios. To this end, we made use of the Flagship mock catalog, a state-of-the-art simulation of the data expected to be observed with Euclid. We arranged the data into four adjacent redshift bins, each of which contains about 11000 voids and we estimated the stacked void-galaxy cross-correlation function in every bin. Fitting a linear-theory model to the data, we obtained constraints on f/b and DMH, where f is the linear growth rate of density fluctuations, b the galaxy bias, D-M the comoving angular diameter distance, and H the Hubble rate. In addition, we marginalized over two nuisance parameters included in our model to account for unknown systematic effects in the analysis. With this approach, Euclid will be able to reach a relative precision of about 4% on measurements of f/b and 0.5% on DMH in each redshift bin. Better modeling or calibration of the nuisance parameters may further increase this precision to 1% and 0.4%, respectively. Our results show that the exploitation of cosmic voids in Euclid will provide competitive constraints on cosmology even as a stand-alone probe. For example, the equation-of-state parameter, w, for dark energy will be measured with a precision of about 10%, consistent with previous more approximate forecasts.

  • Euclid: Identification of asteroid streaks in simulated images using deep learning

    • The material composition of asteroids is an essential piece of knowledge in the quest to understand the formation and evolution of the Solar System. Visual to near-infrared spectra or multiband photometry is required to constrain the material composition of asteroids, but we currently have such data, especially in the near-infrared wavelengths, for only a limited number of asteroids. This is a significant limitation considering the complex orbital structures of the asteroid populations. Up to 150 000 asteroids will be visible in the images of the upcoming ESA Euclid space telescope, and the instruments of Euclid will offer multiband visual to near-infrared photometry and slitless near-infrared spectra of these objects. Most of the asteroids will appear as streaks in the images. Due to the large number of images and asteroids, automated detection methods are needed. A non-machine-learning approach based on the Streak Det software was previously tested, but the results were not optimal for short and/or faint streaks. We set out to improve the capability to detect asteroid streaks in Euclid images by using deep learning. We built, trained, and tested a three-step machine-learning pipeline with simulated Euclid images. First, a convolutional neural network (CNN) detected streaks and their coordinates in full images, aiming to maximize the completeness (recall) of detections. Then, a recurrent neural network (RNN) merged snippets of long streaks detected in several parts by the CNN. Lastly, gradient-boosted trees (XGBoost) linked detected streaks between different Euclid exposures to reduce the number of false positives and improve the purity (precision) of the sample. The deep-learning pipeline surpasses the completeness and reaches a similar level of purity of a non-machine-learning pipeline based on the StreakDet software. Additionally, the deep-learning pipeline can detect asteroids 0.25–0.5 magnitudes fainter than StreakDet. The deep-learning pipeline could result in a 50% increase in the number of detected asteroids compared to the StreakDet software. There is still scope for further refinement, particularly in improving the accuracy of streak coordinates and enhancing the completeness of the final stage of the pipeline, which involves linking detections across multiple exposures.

  • Euclid : cosmological forecasts from the void size function

    • The Euclid mission - with its spectroscopic galaxy survey covering a sky area over 15 000 deg(2) in the redshift range 0.9 < z < 1.8 - will provide a sample of tens of thousands of cosmic voids. This paper thoroughly explores for the first time the constraining power of the void size function on the properties of dark energy (DE) from a survey mock catalogue, the official Euclid Flagship simulation. We identified voids in the Flagship light-cone, which closely matches the features of the upcoming Euclid spectroscopic data set. We modelled the void size function considering a state-of-the art methodology: we relied on the volume-conserving (Vdn) model, a modification of the popular Sheth & van de Weygaert model for void number counts, extended by means of a linear function of the large-scale galaxy bias. We found an excellent agreement between model predictions and measured mock void number counts. We computed updated forecasts for the Euclid mission on DE from the void size function and provided reliable void number estimates to serve as a basis for further forecasts of cosmological applications using voids. We analysed two different cosmological models for DE: the first described by a constant DE equation of state parameter, w, and the second by a dynamic equation of state with coefficients w(0) and w(a). We forecast 1 sigma errors on w lower than 10% and we estimated an expected figure of merit (FoM) for the dynamical DE scenario FoM(w0,wa) = 17 when considering only the neutrino mass as additional free parameter of the model. The analysis is based on conservative assumptions to ensure full robustness, and is a pathfinder for future enhancements of the technique. Our results showcase the impressive constraining power of the void size function from the Euclid spectroscopic sample, both as a stand-alone probe, and to be combined with other Euclid cosmological probes.

  • A joint SZ-X-ray-optical analysis of the dynamical state of 288 massive galaxy clusters

    • We use imaging from the first three years of the Dark Energy Survey to characterize the dynamical state of 288 galaxy clusters at 0.1 less than or similar to z less than or similar to 0.9 detected in the South Pole Telescope (SPT) Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) effect survey (SPT-SZ). We examine spatial offsets between the position of the brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) and the centre of the gas distribution as traced by the SPT-SZ centroid and by the X-ray centroid/peak position from Chandra and XMM data. We show that the radial distribution of offsets provides no evidence that SPT SZ-selected cluster samples include a higher fraction of mergers than X-ray-selected cluster samples. We use the offsets to classify the dynamical state of the clusters, selecting the 43 most disturbed clusters, with half of those at z greater than or similar to 0.5, a region seldom explored previously. We find that Schechter function fits to the galaxy population in disturbed clusters and relaxed clusters differ at z > 0.55 but not at lower redshifts. Disturbed clusters at z > 0.55 have steeper faint-end slopes and brighter characteristic magnitudes. Within the same redshift range, we find that the BCGs in relaxed clusters tend to be brighter than the BCGs in disturbed samples, while in agreement in the lower redshift bin. Possible explanations includes a higher merger rate, and a more efficient dynamical friction at high redshift. The red-sequence population is less affected by the cluster dynamical state than the general galaxy population.

    • We construct and validate the selection function of the MARD-Y3 galaxy cluster sample. This sample was selected through optical follow-up of the 2nd ROSAT faint source catalogue with Dark Energy Survey year 3 data. The selection function is modelled by combining an empirically constructed X-ray selection function with an incompleteness model for the optical follow-up. We validate the joint selection function by testing the consistency of the constraints on the X-ray flux–mass and richness–mass scaling relation parameters derived from different sources of mass information: (1) cross-calibration using South Pole Telescope Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SPT-SZ) clusters, (2) calibration using number counts in X-ray, in optical and in both X-ray and optical while marginalizing over cosmological parameters, and (3) other published analyses. We find that the constraints on the scaling relation from the number counts and SPT-SZ cross-calibration agree, indicating that our modelling of the selection function is adequate. Furthermore, we apply a largely cosmology independent method to validate selection functions via the computation of the probability of finding each cluster in the SPT-SZ sample in the MARD-Y3 sample and vice versa. This test reveals no clear evidence for MARD-Y3 contamination, SPT-SZ incompleteness or outlier fraction. Finally, we discuss the prospects of the techniques presented here to limit systematic selection effects in future cluster cosmological studies.

  • Identification of bacterial lipopeptides as key players in IBS

    • Objectives Clinical studies revealed that early-life adverse events contribute to the development of IBS in adulthood. The aim of our study was to investigate the relationship between prenatal stress (PS), gut microbiota and visceral hypersensitivity with a focus on bacterial lipopeptides containing gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). Design We developed a model of PS in mice and evaluated, in adult offspring, visceral hypersensitivity to colorectal distension (CRD), colon inflammation, barrier function and gut microbiota taxonomy. We quantified the production of lipopeptides containing GABA by mass spectrometry in a specific strain of bacteria decreased in PS, in PS mouse colons, and in faeces of patients with IBS and healthy volunteers (HVs). Finally, we assessed their effect on PS-induced visceral hypersensitivity. Results Prenatally stressed mice of both sexes presented visceral hypersensitivity, no overt colon inflammation or barrier dysfunction but a gut microbiota dysbiosis. The dysbiosis was distinguished by a decreased abundance of Ligilactobacillus murinus, in both sexes, inversely correlated with visceral hypersensitivity to CRD in mice. An isolate from this bacterial species produced several lipopeptides containing GABA including C14AsnGABA. Interestingly, intracolonic treatment with C14AsnGABA decreased the visceral sensitivity of PS mice to CRD. The concentration of C16LeuGABA, a lipopeptide which inhibited sensory neurons activation, was decreased in faeces of patients with IBS compared with HVs. Conclusion PS impacts the gut microbiota composition and metabolic function in adulthood. The reduced capacity of the gut microbiota to produce GABA lipopeptides could be one of the mechanisms linking PS and visceral hypersensitivity in adulthood.

    • Background Functional dyspepsia and bladder pain syndrome are well-known to overlap with irritable bowel syndrome. Whether functional dyspepsia overlaps with bladder pain syndrome remains unknown. Our aim was to evaluate the presence of bladder pain syndrome in functional dyspepsia patients and its impact. Methods All consecutive patients with investigated dyspeptic symptoms in our tertiary care center between March 2015 and November 2018 were studied. Functional dyspepsia and irritable bowel syndrome were diagnosed according to Rome III and IV criteria while bladder pain syndrome was diagnosed using ESSIC criteria. Validated questionnaires were filled to assess quality of life (GIQLI), anxiety and depression (HADS), sleep (PSQI), and insomnia (ISI). Dyspeptic symptoms severity was assessed individually for eight dyspeptic complaints. Key Results Among 1453 patients with dyspeptic symptoms, 61.4% fulfilled Rome criteria for functional dyspepsia. Bladder pain syndrome was present in 16.0% of the patients not fulfilling diagnostic criteria for functional dyspepsia, 22.2% of patients with functional dyspepsia alone, and 36.4% of patients with overlapping functional dyspepsia and irritable bowel syndrome (p-values <0.0001). In patients with bladder pain syndrome overlapping with functional dyspepsia, dyspeptic symptoms severity, anxiety, depression, and insomnia levels were higher while quality of life and sleep quality were reduced (p-values <0.0001). These results were even more pronounced in case of overlap with irritable bowel syndrome (p-values <0.0001). Conclusions and Inferences Bladder pain syndrome is present in 26.9% of functional dyspepsia patients and is associated with higher gastrointestinal, psychological distresses, and sleep symptom burdens, and with reduced quality of life.

    • BackgroundSleep disturbances are common in patients with functional dyspepsia. Our aim was to assess the relationship between subjective sleep and quality of life and to identify factors associated with impaired sleep in functional dyspepsia. MethodsOne thousand two hundred and twenty patients referred for functional gastrointestinal disorders at a single tertiary care center between end 2017 and June 2019 were studied using a self-administered questionnaire. 355 patients with Rome IV-based functional dyspepsia were identified. Sleep was assessed using both the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI). The severity of dyspeptic symptoms was assessed using the Total Symptom Score (TSS). Quality of life was assessed by the GastroIntestinal Quality of Life Index (GIQLI). Anxiety and depression levels were evaluated using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression (HAD) scale. Key ResultsAmong the 355 patients with functional dyspepsia, 66 (18.6%) patients displayed normal sleep quality whereas 289 (81.4%) patients had altered sleep quality. Functional dyspepsia patients with sleep disturbances were older (48.1 +/- 15.4 vs. 41.4 +/- 16.0, p = 0.0009), had decreased quality of life (GIQLI: 75.3 +/- 18.5 vs. 92.1 +/- 15.4, p < 0.0001), greater severity of their symptoms (TSS: 18.9 +/- 3.6 vs. 17.2 +/- 3.9, p = 0.0007), and higher anxiety and depression scores (HADS: 17.7 +/- 7.2 vs. 11.9 +/- 5.1, p < 0.0001). A correlation was found between sleep quality and quality of life [r = -0.43 (95% CI: -0.51 to -0.34), p < 0.0001]. Independent factors predicting poor sleep quality were age [OR 1.03 (95% CI = 1.01-1.05), p = 0.006], depression level [OR 1.27 (95% CI = 1.16-1.39); p < 0.0001], and the severity of dyspeptic symptoms [OR 1.13 (95% CI = 1.04-1.22); p = 0.004]. Conclusion and InferencesA high prevalence of sleep disturbances was found in patients suffering from functional dyspepsia, with 81% of them having altered sleep quality and 61% having insomnia based on subjective assessment. Altered sleep quality and insomnia were associated with altered quality of life, higher severity of symptoms, and higher anxiety and depression scores in this disorder.

  • Proteomic Determinants of Variation in Cholesterol Efflux : Observations from the Dallas Heart Study

    • High-density lipoproteins (HDLs) are promising targets for predicting and treating atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), as they mediate removal of excess cholesterol from lipid-laden macrophages that accumulate in the vasculature. This functional property of HDLs, termed cholesterol efflux capacity (CEC), is inversely associated with ASCVD. HDLs are compositionally diverse, associating with >250 different proteins, but their relative contribution to CEC remains poorly understood. Our goal was to identify and define key HDL-associated proteins that modulate CEC in humans. The proteomic signature of plasma HDL was quantified in 36 individuals in the multi-ethnic population-based Dallas Heart Study (DHS) cohort that exhibited persistent extremely high (>=90th%) or extremely low CEC (<=10th%) over 15 years. Levels of apolipoprotein (Apo)A-I associated ApoC-II, ApoC-III, and ApoA-IV were differentially correlated with CEC in high (r = 0.49, 0.41, and −0.21 respectively) and low (r = −0.46, −0.41, and 0.66 respectively) CEC groups (p for heterogeneity (pHet) = 0.03, 0.04, and 0.003 respectively). Further, we observed that levels of ApoA-I with ApoC-III, complement C3 (CO3), ApoE, and plasminogen (PLMG) were inversely associated with CEC in individuals within the low CEC group (r = −0.11 to −0.25 for subspecies with these proteins vs. r = 0.58 to 0.65 for subspecies lacking these proteins; p < 0.05 for heterogeneity). These findings suggest that enrichment of specific proteins on HDLs and, thus, different subspecies of HDLs, differentially modulate the removal of cholesterol from the vasculature.

  • Pain Behavioural Response to Acoustic and Light Environmental Changes in Very Preterm Infants

    • Noise and high light illumination in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) are recognized as stressors that could alter the well-being and development of vulnerable preterm infants. This prospective observational study evaluated the pain behaviours of very preterm infants (VPIs) to sound peaks (SPs) and light levels variations (LLVs) in the NICU. We measured spontaneously occurring SPs and LLVs in the incubators of 26 VPIs over 10 h. Their behavioural responses were analysed through video recordings using the “Douleur Aigue du Nouveau-né” (DAN) scale. We compared the maximum DAN scores before and after environmental stimuli and the percentage of VPIs with a score ≥ 3 according to the type of stimuli. A total of 591 SPs and 278 LLVs were analysed. SPs of 5 to 15 dBA and LLVs significantly increased the maximum DAN scores compared to baseline. The occurrence of DAN scores ≥ 3 increased with both stressors, with a total of 16% of SPs and 8% of LLVs leading to quantifiable pain behaviour. Altogether, this study shows that VPIs are sensitive to SPs and LLVs, with a slighter higher sensitivity to SPs. The mechanisms leading to pain behaviours induced by noise and light changes should be evaluated further in the context of VPIs brain development. Our results provide further arguments to optimize the NICU sensory environment of neonatal units and to adapt it to the expectations and sensory abilities of VPIs.

    • In the world of Agent-Based Modelling we claim that models and simulations are well suited to aid policy development. Yet it proves difficult to find the right connection with policy developers. In this paper we provide various insights in the policy development world in the context of the Dutch national government. We discuss relevant literature, report on conducted interviews with policy developers and reflect on participatory observations while working in Dutch ministries. This provides us with a set of needs and goals of (Dutch) policy developers. It also thought us that the policy process and the policy developer do not exist. A policy is only one element in the policy process. We found different elements in the policy process for which ABM’s can be used, like consensus building or communication of problem understanding. We pose that ABM is currently not fit to predict policy outcomes in our context. After discussing these elements we have summarized them in requirements that can be operationalized by us and others to find a better connection with policy developers. The requirements are a starting point for a framework that supports policy developers in their work with ABM.

    • Background/Aims The aim of our study is to evaluate the association between meals and perceived gastrointestinal symptoms in real life in a French cohort of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) patients. Methods This prospective cross-sectional observational study included patients from the French association (association des patients souffrant du syndrome de l'intestin irritable [APSSII]) of IBS. Data were collected on demographics, IBS subtype, dietary food, and meal-induced gastrointestinal symptoms from patient filled self-questionnaires or questionnaires. Results Eighty-four patients with IBS were included; 82.3% female with a mean age of 46.9 +/- 15.7 years. Each transit pattern subtype represented one-third of the population. Forty-five percent of patients had severe IBS according to IBS-Severity Scoring System; mean IBS Quality of Life score was 53.9 +/- 18.3. Patients believed that food could trigger or exacerbate gastrointestinal symptoms in 73.3% and 93.4%, respectively. Eighty-nine percent had already tried diets, mostly lactose free diet and low fermentable, oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols diet in 61.3% and 53.6% of cases. Thirty-nine percent of meals induced gastrointestinal symptoms. Meal-induced gastrointestinal symptoms were associated with severity and subtype but not with quality of life. Conclusions This study has confirmed the important link between gastrointestinal symptoms and food. Gastrointestinal symptoms induced by meals are frequent and associated with severity and IBS-diarrhea subtype. Our study also underlines patients' interest in food and diet. More knowledge is needed on food that triggers IBS symptoms but also on diet conditions in order to improve this condition. (J Neurogastroenterol Motil 2021;27:574-580)

    • PurposeThe Swedish National Quality Register for bipolar affective disorder, BipolaR, was established in 2004 to provide nationwide indicators for quality assessment and development in the clinical care of individuals with bipolar spectrum disorder. An ancillary aim was to provide data for bipolar disorder research.ParticipantsInclusion criteria for registration in BipolaR is a diagnosis of bipolar spectrum disorder (ICD codes: F25.0, F30.1-F30.2, F30.8-F31.9, F34.0) and treatment at an outpatient clinic in Sweden. BipolaR collects data from baseline and annual follow-up visits throughout Sweden. Data is collected using questionnaires administered by healthcare staff. The questions cover sociodemographic, diagnostic, treatment, outcomes and patient reported outcome variables. The register currently includes 39 583 individual patients with a total of 75 423 baseline and follow-up records.Findings to dateData from BipolaR has been used in several peer-reviewed publications. Studies have provided knowledge on effectiveness, side effects and use of pharmacological and psychological treatment in bipolar disorder. In addition, findings on the diagnosis of bipolar disorder, risk factors for attempted and completed suicide and health economics have been reported. The Swedish Bipolar Collection project has contributed to a large number of published studies and provides important information on the genetic architecture of bipolar disorder, the impact of genetic variation on disease characteristics and treatment outcome.Future plansData collection is ongoing with no fixed end date. Currently, approximately 5000 new registrations are added each year. Cohort data are available via a formalised request procedure from Centre of Registers Vastra Gotaland (e-mail: registercentrum@vgregion.se). Data requests for research purposes require an entity responsible for the research and an ethical approval.

    • Background: Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth treatment is usually based on antibiotics with no guidelines available. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of different antibiotics to treat small intestinal bacterial overgrowth. Methods: Consecutive patients referred to our tertiary center and diagnosed with intestinal bacterial overgrowth were retrospectively included. Patients were diagnosed using a 75g glucose breath test. Patients were treated either with a single antibiotic (quinolone or azole) or rotating antibiotics (quinolone and azole, one after the other) for 10 consecutive days per month for 3months. A negative glucose breath test after antibiotic treatment was considered as remission. Quality of life (GIQLI) and gastrointestinal severity (IBS-SSS) were assessed before and after antibiotic treatment. Symptomatic evaluation was realized in simple blind of glucose breath test result: patients were unaware of their results. Results: Between August 2005 and February 2020, 223 patients were included in the analysis (female 79.8%, mean age 50.2±15.7years). Remission was observed in 119 patients (53.4%) after one course of antibiotics and was more frequent in patients receiving rotating antibiotics than in patients receiving a single antibiotic (70.0% vs. 50.8%, p=0.050). Remission was associated with a significant improvement in quality of life (p=0.035) and in bloating (p=0.004). Conclusion: In this study, the treatment of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth using rotating antibiotics was more effective than treatment using a single course of antibiotic. Remission was associated with improvement in both quality of life and bloating. © 2021 The Authors.
