  • Posttransplantational bone disease : the effect of immunosuppressive drugs on bone : clinical and experimental studies
  • 2002
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Osteoporosis and pathologic fractures are frequent complications ill patients with end-stage liver or kidney diseases. Although successful transplantation eliminates some factors related to poor organ function, all increased incidence of pathologic fractures was reported ill the early post-transplant period in spite of normalization of the allograft function. The aims of this thesis were to study the effect of organ transplantation oil bone density and bone mineral metabolism as well as to evaluate tile effect of immunosuppressive drugs oil bone mineral metabolism. Twenty-five patients with end-stage liver disease and candidates for liver transplantation were measured for bone mineral density (BMD) before transplantation and measurements were repeated in 9 patients at 3 months, 6 months. and 12 months after liver transplantation (Paper 1). We found that an early and accentuated bone loss occurs during the first 6 months following transplantation, predominantly in sites enriched with trabecular bone and less ill cortical bone. 'I his bone reduction seems to mainly be the result of increased bone resorption, possibly related to the immunosuppressive therapy. One hundred and twenty-eight patients with different types of' hyperparathyroidism (HPT) were included for evaluation of bone mineral density before and after parathyroidectomy (Paper 11). Bone mineral density (BMD) measurements were performed ill all patients once before parathyroidectomy and measurements were repeated longitudinally for 3 years. Regardless of the etiology, a large proportion of HPT patients [lad reduced bone density. Ill patients with primary symptomatic HPT and patients with HPT associated with hemodialysis, bone density increases after parathyroidectomy to all extent that largely restores their preoperative bone loss. Ill contrast, parathyroidectomy does riot appear to improve BMD ill patients with HPT associated with renal transplantation, possibly because ofthe adverse effects of immunosuppressive agents ill these patients. The effect of the immunosuppressant drugs cyclosporine A (CsA), Tacrolimus (FK506), and prednisolone oil bone mass ill the rat was studied ill two experiments using densitometry of femur bone and bone morphometry of decalcified tibial bone (Paper Ill. W). Bone density and histology revealed that both CsA and FK506 affect bone by different mechanisms, possibly growth retardation, and that a high dosage of CsA or FK506 alters both cortical and trabecular bone ill rats. Prednisolone reduced bone turnover without affecting bone mass, and the combined therapy of both CsA and prednisolone induced a low bone turnover osteopenia. Recent reports have indicated that statins used ill the treatment of hypercholesterolemia might substantially increase bone formation and reduce the risk of fractures. To evaluate the association between statin use and BMD ill our patient population. hospital records for all adult patients who had received a kidney transplant between 1973 and 1998 were reviewed and 59 patients were identified as receiving statins. Bone density measurements were performed in 32 renal transplant patients taking statins as well as in age- and sex- matched controls. Statins users had a higher bone density in the lumbar spine compared to their controls. In conclusion, patients undergoing organ transplantation are at high risk to develop osteoporosis and pathologic fractures due to the accentuated bone loss, which occurs during the first posttransplant year. The immunosuppressive therapy could have a contribution in the early decrease of bone mass in patients following transplantation as well as ill abolishing the anabolic effect of parathyroidectomy on bone mass ill patients with HPT associated with renal transplantation. Experimental administration of CsA and FK506 to rats ill doses comparable to those used ill human subjects provided direct evidence that both drugs have adverse effects on bone. Moreover, CsA seems to augment the effect of prednisolone oil bone when both drugs were given together. Preliminary data of the effect of statins oil bone showed a modest increment of trabecular bone density (lumbar spine) in statin users compared to controls. However, large randomized controlled studies are needed to accurately determine if statins have a salutary effect oil bone mass and bone mineral metabolism.

  • Neisseria meningitidis serogroup W-135 isolated from healthy carriers and patients in Sudan after the Hajj in 2000
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Infectious Diseases. - 0036-5548 .- 1651-1980. ; 35:4, s. 230-233
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The first epidemic in the world of meningococcal disease due to serogroup W-135 was reported during the Hajj in 2000, with subsequent spread. The aims of the present study were to investigate whether the Hajj 2000 Neisseria meningitidis serogroup W-135 had also been carried to Sudan in the eastern part of the African meningitis belt, by examining healthy Sudanese pilgrims (Hajj 2000) and members of their families, and whether the strain was causing meningitis. The phenotypic character of W-135 meningococci from Sudanese carriers (n = 5) and patients (n = 2) 1 y later was similar to W-135 strains associated with Hajj 2000. The present study, using the combination of the 2 molecular techniques; sequencing of the porA gene for variable regions (VR1, VR2 and VR3) and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis of the entire genome (using SpeI and NheI), shows that the Hajj 2000 serogroup W-135 clone (P1.5,2,36-2 of the ET-37 complex) most probably was introduced into Sudan, by pilgrims returning from the Hajj 2000. This strain has not been diagnosed before in Sudan. Close epidemiological surveillance is required to identify a possible new emerging meningitis epidemic.

  • Urban micro-climate in the City of Fez, Morocco
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Architecture City Environment: Proceedings of PLEA 2000, Cambridge, UK 2-5 July 2000. - 1 902916 16 6 ; , s. 472-476
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The proportion of the world’s population living in urban areas is constantly increasing. Different urban shapes result in different microclimates. The way cities are planned and built is therefore important for the global energy use. This study presents results from measurements of street climate in the city of Fez, Morocco, in contrasting traditional and modern housing areas, each with its own problems and qualities. Air temperature, relative humidity and wind velocity were measured in the two types of housing area, during both hot and cold seasons. These preliminary results confirm the night-time heat island phenomenon, while during the day the two areas show different behaviour. Further studies aim at recommendations on how to plan and build new housing areas in the region, to increase urban and indoor thermal comfort

  • Three- and four-jet production at low x at HERA
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044. ; 54:3, s. 389-409
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Three- and four-jet production is measured in deep-inelastic ep scattering at low x and Q(2) with the H1 detector using an integrated luminosity of 44.2 pb(-1). Several phase space regions are selected for the three-jet analysis in order to study the underlying parton dynamics from global topologies to the more restrictive regions of forward jets close to the proton direction. The measurements of cross sections for events with at least three jets are compared to fixed order QCD predictions of O(alpha(2)(s)) and O(alpha(3)(s)) and with Monte Carlo simulation programs where higher order effects are approximated by parton showers. A good overall description is provided by the O(alpha(3)(s)) calculation. Too few events are predicted at the lowest x similar to 10(-4), especially for topologies with two forward jets. This hints to large contributions at low x from initial state radiation of gluons close to the proton direction and unordered in transverse momentum. The Monte Carlo program in which gluon radiation is generated by the colour dipole model gives a good description of both the three- and the four-jet data in absolute normalisation and shape.

  • Genetic diversity in hepatitis C virus in Egypt and possible association with hepatocellular carcinoma
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Journal of General Virology. - : Microbiology Society. - 1465-2099 .- 0022-1317. ; 88:5, s. 1526-1531
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Egypt has one of the world's highest prevalences of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, with a majority of genotype 4 infections. To explore the genetic diversity of HCV in Egypt, sera from 131 Egyptians [56 from community studies, 37 chronic hepatitis patients, 28 hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients and 10 patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma] were genotyped by restriction fragment-length polymorphism and phylogenetic analyses of sequences from the mid-core and non-structural 5B regions. The different genotyping methods showed good agreement. The majority of the viruses (83 of 131; 63 %) were of subtype 4a, but five other subtypes within genotype 4 were also observed, as well as three genotype 1b, five genotype 1g and one genotype 3a samples. Interestingly, subtype 4o, which was easily identifiable in all three genomic regions, 3 showed an association with HCC (P=0.017), which merits further investigation.

  • Microextraction in Packed Syringe Online with Liquid Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry : Molecularly imprinted polymer as packing material for MEPS in selective extraction of ropivacaine from plasma
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Journal of Liquid Chromatography & Related Technologies. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1082-6076 .- 1520-572X. ; 29:12, s. 1725-1736
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The excellent performance of a new sample preparation method, microextraction in packed syringe (MEPS), was recently illustrated by online LC‐MS and GS‐MS assays of local anaesthetics in plasma samples. In the method, approximately 1 mg of solid packing material was inserted into a syringe (100–250 µL) as a plug. Sample preparation took place on the packed bed. The new method was easy to use, fully automated, of low cost, and rapid in comparison with previously used methods. This paper presents the use of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) as packing material for higher extraction selectivity. Development and validation of a method for MIP‐MEPS online with LC‐MS‐MS using ropivacaine in plasma as model compound were investigated. A bupivacaine imprinted polymer was used. The method was validated and the standard curves were evaluated by means of quadratic regression and weighted by inverse of the concentration: 1/x for the calibration range 2–2000 nM. The applied polymer could be used more than 100 times before the syringe was discarded. The extraction recovery was 60%. The results showed high correlation coefficients (R 2 >0.999) for all runs. The accuracy, given as a percentage deviation from the nominal concentration values, ranged from -6% to 3%. The precision, given as the relative standard deviation, at three different concentrations (QC samples) was consistently about 3% to 10%. The limit of quantification was 2 nM.

  • Health related quality of life and sense of coherence in Sudanese diabetic subjects with lower limb amputation
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Tohoku journal of experimental medicine. - : Tohoku University Medical Press. - 0040-8727 .- 1349-3329. ; 217:1, s. 45-50
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Quality of life is an important outcome measure in diabetic patients with lower limb amputation (LLA). The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of lower limb amputation on health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in Sudanese diabetic subjects. Additionally the Sense of Coherence scale (SOC-13) and a symptom check list was used in subjects with LLA. A total of 60 (M/F; 40/20) diabetic subjects with LLA and 60 (M/F; 23/37) diabetic reference subjects without LLA, were studied. For both groups HRQOL was measured using The Medical Outcomes Study questionnaire (MOS). Subjects with LLA had significantly poorer HRQOL compared to the reference group in most HRQOL domains (p < 0.0001). Duration of diabetes had the greatest negative impact on HRQOL in both groups, those with LLA (p < 0.0001), and in those without LLA (p < 0.0001), although subjects who were amputated earlier had poorer HRQOL than recently amputated (p < 0.0001). Higher SOC scores were recorded in LLA patients who have greater ratings of positive feelings, family satisfaction and sleep in the HRQOL examination (p < 0.0001). In conclusion, Sudanese diabetic subjects with LLA have a poor quality of life. The triad of diabetes duration, symptoms and amputations, has turned to be important risk factor for poorer HRQOL. Functional and mobility status were suggested to be an important determinant of HRQOL among this population. As the Sudanese population has coherent social relationships, this poor performance of the diabetic subjects will certainly increase the burden on the whole family, in both integrity and economical status. Nevertheless, these deep-rooted social interrelations together with increasing diabetes awareness have substantially improved the family satisfaction among our patients.

  • The influence of glucose self-monitoring on glycaemic control in patients with diabetes mellitus in Sudan
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice. - : Elsevier BV. - 0168-8227 .- 1872-8227. ; 74:1, s. 90-94
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: To investigate the influence of self-monitoring of glucose on the glycaemic control in Sudanese diabetic subjects. Subjects and methods: A group of 193 consecutive type 2 and type I diabetic subjects (95 men, 98 women) were studied. In 104 subjects with type 2 diabetes fasting blood glucose was measured using a glucose meter and blood was obtained for serum glucose measurement in the laboratory. In the remaining 89 diabetic subjects random blood glucose was measured using the same glucose meter and a whole blood sample was drawn for laboratory assessment of HbA1c. Data on self-monitoring and other clinical and personal characteristics were recorded. Results: More than 75% of either type I and type 2 diabetic patients never self-monitored blood or urine glucose. In type 2 diabetic subjects self-monitoring of blood or urine glucose was not related to glycaemic control. In type I diabetic subjects, however, self-monitoring of blood glucose was significantly associated with better glycaemic control, as assessed by HbA1c (P = 0.02) and blood glucose at clinic visits (P < 0.0001), and similar associations were found for urine glucose self-monitoring (P = 0.04 and 0.02) respectively. Neither glycaemic control nor glucose self-monitoring was associated with education level. Conclusions: Self-monitoring of blood glucose was not found to be associated to better glycaemic control in Sudanese subjects with type 2 diabetes. In contrast, self-monitoring of both blood and urine glucose was significantly associated with glycaemic control in subjects with type I diabetes. Self-monitoring of urine glucose could be useful where measurement of blood glucose is not available or affordable.

  • Increased neutrophil membrane expression and plasma level of proteinase 3 in systemic vasculitis are not a consequence of the - 564 A/G promotor polymorphism.
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Clinical and Experimental Immunology. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0009-9104 .- 1365-2249. ; 145:1, s. 63-70
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Several findings link proteinase 3 (PR3) to small vessel vasculitis. Besides being a major target of anti-neutrophil cytoplasm antibodies (ANCA), previous findings have shown increased circulating levels of PR3 in vasculitis patients, increased levels of neutrophil membrane-PR3 (mPR3) expression and a skewed distribution of the − 564 A/G polymorphism in the promotor region of the PR3 gene. In this study we elucidate how these three findings relate to each other. The plasma concentration of PR3 was measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), mPR3 expression by fluorescence activated cell sorter (FACS) and the gene polymorphism by real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR). We compared results from 63 patients with ANCA-associated systemic vasculitis (AASV) with 107 healthy blood donors. In accordance with previous reports, AASV patients had increased plasma concentrations of PR3 compared to healthy controls (mean 224 µg/l versus 155 µg/l, P < 0·0001). They also showed an increased number of mPR3-positive neutrophils (60% versus 42%, P < 0·001). However, contrary to a previous report, we found no skewed distribution of the polymorphism in PR3 gene. There was a weak correlation between mPR3 mean fluorescence intensity (MFI) and plasma PR3 among healthy controls and myeloperoxidase–ANCA (MPO–ANCA)-positive patients (r = 0·24, P = 0·015 and r = 0·52, P = 0·011, respectively). In conclusion, increased plasma PR3 and high expression of mPR3 are associated with small vessel vasculitis, but neither of them is a consequence of the − 564 A/G polymorphism of the PR3 gene promotor.

  • Mössbauer Spectroscopy of Meteoritic and Synthetic Fe-Ni Alloys
  • 2004
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis reports on the results of investigating Fe-containing minerals in meteorites, with focus on Fe-Ni minerals and their magnetic properties, along with some synthetic Fe-Ni analogues. The New Halfa meteorite, which fell in Sudan 1994, has been studied using Mössbauer spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and electron microprobe analysis techniques, and classified as an ordinary L-type chondrite of petrologic type 4. Mössbauer spectra of taenite-enriched samples from the metal particles of the New Halfa (L4) and Al Kidirate (H6) meteorites identify the following γ (fcc) Fe-Ni phases: the ferromagnetic atomically ordered taenite (tetrataenite) with ~ 50 at % Ni, the ferromagnetic disordered taenite with ~ 50 at % Ni, the low-Ni (~ 25 at %) paramagnetic taenite (antitaenite). The presence of the superstructure of tetrataenite is confirmed by synchrotron X-ray diffraction.Fe-rich γ (fcc) Fe-Ni alloys with compositions Fe79Ni21, Fe76Ni24, and Fe73Ni27, which serve as synthetic analogues of antitaenite, are prepared by mechanical alloying and subsequent annealing at 650 °C. The Mössbauer results indicate that these alloys are inhomogeneous and contain a high moment (HM) ferromagnetic Ni-rich phase (> 30 at % Ni) and a low moment (LM) paramagnetic Fe-rich phase, which orders antiferromagnetically at low temperature. The coexistence of these phases is attributed to phase segregation occurring on short range, probably nanometer scale, consistent with the Fe-Ni phase diagram below 400 °C where there is a miscibility gap associated with a spinodal decomposition in alloys with < 50 at % Ni.The combined high field Mössbauer spectroscopy and SQUID magnetometry results on these alloys at room temperature indicate large induced local magnetic moments in the paramagnetic part of the sample, which increases with increasing the Ni content. The results, when compared with the high field Mössbauer results on antitaenite from the metal particle of Al Kidirate and New Halfa meteorites may be used to estimate the Ni content of antitaenite in meteorites.High pressure 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy measurements up to ~ 41 GPa have been carried out at room temperature using the diamond anvil cell (DAC) technique in order to investigate the magnetic properties of γ (fcc) 57Fe53Ni47 alloy. The results indicate a pressure induced Invar effect at ~ 7 GPa and a non-magnetic or paramagnetic state above 20 GPa, demonstrating the volume dependence of the magnetic moment of γ (fcc) Fe-Ni alloys.

  • Controlled reversible adsorption of core : Shell metallic nanoparticles at the polarized water/1,2-dichloroethane interface investigated by optical second-harmonic generation
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: The Journal of Physical Chemistry C. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1932-7447 .- 1932-7455. ; 111:25, s. 8849-8855
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report the observation of the reversible adsorption of core-shell gold-silver nanoparticles at the polarized water/1,2-dichloroethane interface using the nonlinear optical technique of surface second-harmonic generation. This study unambiguously demonstrates the excellent stability against aggregation of these core-shell nanoparticles, namely, gold core nanoparticles coated with silver layers of variable thickness, in the presence of an electrolyte salt like lithium chloride. Furthermore, it is also demonstrated that the adsorption of the nanoparticles is reversible by modulating the applied potential at water/1,2-dichloroethane interface. The analysis of these results is performed within the Debye-Huckel approximation of the electrostatic interactions between the nanoparticles. This approach shows that the stability of core-shell nanoparticles can be attributed to the formation of a silver oxide layer at the Surface of the particles.

    • The two compounds [FeII(pyridine)2(N3)2(H2O)] (1) and [FeII(4-acetylpyridine)2(N3)2] (2) were prepared. The X-ray crystal structures show end-to-end (EE) bridging azides in both cases with a 1D Fe-NNN-Fe chain for 1 and a 2D Fe-NNN-Fe net in 2. Both compounds show similar magnetic behaviour where the high-temperature data are consistent with antiferromagnetic couplings and the low-temperature data indicate ferrimagnetic ordering based on spin canting at 20 and 45 K. Compound 2 also shows a hysteresis loop. These findings are compared to the related 3D coordination polymer [Fe(N3)2(4,4'-bipyridine)]. According to network analyses the latter compound was shown to contain the new uninodal six-connected-network topology (510 · 64 · 7)-jsm.

    • Using the deep inelastic e(+) p and e(-) p charged and neutral current scattering cross sections previously published, a combined electroweak and QCD analysis is performed to determine electroweak parameters accounting for their correlation with parton distributions. The data used have been collected by the HI experiment in 1994-2000 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 117.2 pb(-1). A measurement is obtained of the W propagator mass in charged current ep scattering. The weak mixing angle sin(2)theta w is determined in the on-mass-shell renormalisation scheme. A first measurement at HERA is made of the light quark weak couplings to the Z(0) boson and a possible contribution of right-handed isospin components to the weak couplings is investigated. • A direct search has been made for magnetic monopoles produced in e(+)p collisions at a centre of mass energy of 300 GeV at HERA. The beam pipe surrounding the interaction region in 1995-1997 was investigated using a SQUID magnetometer to look for stopped magnetic monopoles. During this time an integrated luminosity of 62 pb(-1) was delivered. No magnetic monopoles were observed and charge and mass dependent upper limits on the e(+)p production cross section are set.

    • A model-independent search for deviations from the Standard Model prediction is performed in e(+) p and e(-) p collisions at HERA using H1 data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 117 pb(-1). For the first time all event topologies involving isolated electrons, photons, muons, neutrinos and jets with high transverse momenta are investigated in a single analysis. Events are assigned to exclusive classes according to their final state. A statistical algorithm is developed to search for deviations from the Standard Model in the distributions of the scalar sum of transverse momenta or invariant mass of final state particles and to quantify their significance. A good agreement with the Standard Model prediction is observed in most of the event classes. The most significant deviation is found for a topology containing an isolated muon, missing transverse momentum and a jet, consistent with a previously reported observation.

  • Diffractive deep-inelastic scattering with a leading proton at HERA
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044. ; 48:3, s. 749-766
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The cross section for the diffractive deep-inelastic scattering process ep -> eX(P) is measured, with the leading final state proton detected in the H1 Forward Proton Spectrometer. The data analysed cover the range x(P) < 0.1 in fractional proton longitudinal momentum loss, 0.08 < vertical bar t vertical bar < 0.5 GeV-2 in squared four-momentum transfer at the proton vertex, 2 < Q(2) < 50 GeV2 in photon virtuality and 0.004 < beta = x/x(P) < 1, where x is the Bjorken scaling variable. For x(P) less than or similar to 10(-2), the differential cross section has a dependence of approximately d sigma/dt proportional to e(6t), independently of x(P), beta and Q(2) within uncertainties. The cross section is also measured triple differentially in x(P), beta and Q(2). The x(P) dependence is interpreted in terms of an effective pomeron trajectory with intercept alpha(P) (0) = 1.114 +/- 0.018(stat.) +/- 0.012(syst.)(-0.020)(+0.040) (model) and a subleading exchange. The data are in good agreement with an H1 measurement for which the event selection is based on a large gap in the rapidity distribution of the final state hadrons, after accounting for proton dissociation contributions in the latter. Within uncertainties, the dependence of the cross section on x and Q(2) can thus be factorised from the dependences on all studied variables which characterise the proton vertex, for both the pomeron and the sub-leading exchange.

  • Ingår i: Physics Letters. Section B: Nuclear, Elementary Particle and High-Energy Physics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693. ; 638:5-6, s. 422-431
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The diffractive photoproduction of rho mesons, ep -> e rho Y, with large momentum transfer squared at the proton vertex, vertical bar t vertical bar, is studied with the H1 detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 20.1 pb(-1). The photon-proton centre of mass energy spans the range 75 < W < 95 GeV, the photon virtuality is restricted to Q(2) < 0.01 GeV2 and the mass My of the proton remnant is below 5 GeV. The t dependence of the cross section is measured for the range 1.5 < vertical bar t vertical bar < 10.0 GeV2 and is well described by a power law, d sigma/d vertical bar t vertical bar proportional to vertical bar t vertical bar(-n). The spin density matrix elements, which provide information on the helicity structure of the interaction, are extracted using measurements of angular distributions of the rho decay products. The data indicate a violation of s-channel helicity conservation, with contributions from both single and double helicity-flip being observed. The results are compared to the predictions of perturbative QCD models.

  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044. ; 46:3, s. 585-603
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cross sections for elastic production of J/psi mesons in photoproduction and electroproduction are measured in electron proton collisions at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 55 pb(-1). Results are presented for photon virtualities Q(2) up to 80 GeV2. The dependence on the photon-proton centre of mass energy W-gamma p is analysed in the range 40 <= W-gamma p <= 305 GeV in photoproduction and 40 <= W-gamma p <= 160 GeV in electroproduction. The W-gamma p dependences of the cross sections do not change significantly with Q(2) and can be described by models based on perturbative QCD. Within such models, the data show a high sensitivity to the gluon density of the proton in the domain of low Bjorken x and low Q(2). Differential cross sections d sigma/dt, where t is the squared four-momentum transfer at the proton vertex, are measured in the range vertical bar t vertical bar < 1.2 GeV2 as functions of W-gamma p and Q(2). Effective Pomeron trajectories are determined for photoproduction and electroproduction. The J/psi production and decay angular distributions are consistent with s-channel helicity conservation. The ratio of the cross sections for longitudinally and transversely polarised photons is measured as a function of Q(2) and is found to be described by perturbative QCD based models.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A narrow resonance in D*(-)p and D*(+)(p) over bar invariant mass combinations is observed in inelastic electron-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 300 GeV and 320 GeV at HERA. The resonance has a mass of 3099 +/- 3(stat.) +/- 5(syst.) MeV and a measured Gaussian width of 12 +/- 3(stat.) MeV, compatible with the experimental resolution. The resonance is interpreted as an anti-charmed baryon with a minimal constituent quark composition of uudd (c) over bar, together with the charge conjugate. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044. ; 46:1, s. 27-42
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The production of forward jets has been measured in deep inelastic ep collisions at HERA. The results are presented in terms of single differential cross sections as a function of the Bjorken scaling variable (xB(j)) and as triple differential cross sections d3 sigma/dx(Bj)dQ(2)dp(t)(,jet)(2), where Q(2) is the four momentum transfer squared and p(t)(,iet)(2) is the squared transverse momentum of the forward jet. Also cross sections for events with a di-jet system in addition to the forward jet are measured as a function of the rapidity separation between the forward jet and the two additional jets. The measurements are compared with next-to-leading order QCD calculations and with the predictions of various QCD-based models.

  • Inclusive D*(+/-) meson and associated dijet production in deep-inelastic scattering at HERA
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044. ; 51:2, s. 271-287
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Inclusive D*(+/-) production is measured in deep-inelastic ep scattering at HERA with the H1 detector. In addition, the production of dijets in events with a D*(+/-) meson is investigated. The analysis covers values of photon virtuality 2 <= Q(2) <= 100 GeV2 and of inelasticity 0.05 <= y <= 0.7. Differential cross sections are measured as a function of Q(2) and x and of various D*(+/-) meson and jet observables. Within the experimental and theoretical uncertainties all measured cross sections are found to be adequately described by next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD calculations, based on the photon - gluon fusion process and DGLAP evolution, without the need for an additional resolved component of the photon beyond what is included at NLO. A reasonable description of the data is also achieved by a prediction based on the CCFM evolution of partons involving the kT- unintegrated gluon distribution of the proton.

  • 2007
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044. ; 50:2, s. 251-267
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Differential photoproduction cross sections are measured for events containing D-*+/- mesons. The data were taken with the H1 detector at the ep collider HERA and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 51.1 pb(-1). The kinematic region covers small photon virtualities Q(2) < 0.01 GeV2 and photon-proton centre-of-mass energies of 171 < W gamma(Cep) < 256 GeV. The details of the heavy quark production process are further investigated in events with one or two jets in addition to the D-*+/- meson. Differential cross sections for D-* + jet production are determined and the correlations between the D-*+/- meson and the jet(s) are studied. The results are compared with perturbative QCD predictions applying collinear- or k(t)-factorisation.

  • 2005
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044. ; 38:4, s. 447-459
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Inclusive production cross sections are measured in deep inelastic scattering at HERA for meson states composed of a charm quark and a light antiquark or the charge conjugate. The measurements cover the kinematic region of photon virtuality 2 < Q(2) < 100 GeV2, inelasticity 0.05 < y < 0.7, D meson transverse momenta p(t)( D) greater than or equal to 2.5 GeV and pseudorapidity |eta( D)| less than or equal to 1.5. The identification of the D-meson decays and the reduction of the combinatorial background profit from the reconstruction of displaced secondary vertices by means of the H1 silicon vertex detector. The production of charmed mesons containing the light quarks u, d and s is found to be compatible with a description in which the hard scattering is followed by a factorisable and universal hadronisation process.

  • 2006
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044. ; 48:3, s. 715-748
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A detailed analysis is presented of the diffractive deep-inelastic scattering process ep -> eXY, where Y is a proton or a low mass proton excitation carrying a fraction 1 - x(IP) > 0.95 of the incident proton longitudinal momentum and the squared four-momentum transfer at the proton vertex satisfies |t| < 1 GeV2. Using data taken by the H1 experiment, the cross section is measured for photon virtualities in the range 3.5 <= Q(2) <= 1600 GeV2, triple differentially in x(IP), Q(2) and beta = x/x(P), where x is the Bjorken scaling variable. At low x(IP), the data are consistent with a factorisable x(IP) dependence, which can be described by the exchange of an effective pomeron trajectory with intercept alpha(IP)(0) = 1.118 +/- 0.008(exp.)(-0.010)(+0.029)(model). Diffractive parton distribution functions and their uncertainties are determined from a next-to-leading order DGLAP QCD analysis of the Q(2)and beta dependences of the cross section. The resulting gluon distribution carries an integrated fraction of around 70% of the exchanged momentum in the Q(2) range studied. Total and differential cross sections are also measured for the diffractive charged current process e(+) p -> (v) over bar eXY and are found to be well described by predictions based on the diffractive parton distributions. The ratio of the diffractive to the inclusive neutral current ep cross sections is studied. Over most of the kinematic range, this ratio shows no significant dependence on Q(2) at fixed x(P) and x or on x at fixed Q(2) and beta.

  • Measurement of anti-deuteron photoproduction and a search for heavy stable charged particles at HERA
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044. ; 36:4, s. 413-423
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The cross section for anti-deuteron photoproduction is measured at HERA at a mean centre-of-mass energy of W-gammap=200 GeV in the range 0.2 < p(T)/M < 0.7 and y < 0.4, where M, p(T) and y are the mass, transverse momentum and rapidity of the anti-deuteron in the HERA laboratory frame, respectively. The numbers of anti-deuterons per event are found to be similar in photoproduction to those in central proton-proton collisions at the CERN ISR but much lower than those in central Au-Au collisions at RHIC. The coalescence parameter B-2, which characterizes the likelihood of anti-deuteron production, is measured in photoproduction to be 0.010+/-0.002+/-0.001, which is much higher than in Au-Au collisions at a similar nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy. No significant production of particles heavier than deuterons is observed and upper limits are set on the photoproduction cross sections for such particles.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A measurement of the beauty production cross section in ep collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 319 GeV is presented. The data were collected with the H1 detector at the HERA collider in the years 1999-2000. Events are selected by requiring the presence of jets and muons in the final state. Both the long lifetime and the large mass of b-flavoured hadrons are exploited to identify events containing beauty quarks. Differential cross sections are measured in photoproduction, with photon virtualities Q(2) < 1 GeV2, and in deep inelastic scattering, where 2 < Q(2) < 100 GeV2. The results are compared with perturbative QCD calculations to leading and next-to-leading order. The predictions are found to be somewhat lower than the data.

    • A measurement of charm and beauty photoproduction at the electron proton collider HERA is presented based on the simultaneous detection of a D*(+/-) meson and a muon. The correlation between the D* meson and the muon serves to separate the charm and beauty contributions and the analysis provides comparable sensitivity to both. The total and differential experimental cross sections are compared to LO and NLO QCD calculations. The measured charm cross section is in good agreement with QCD predictions including higher order effects while the beauty cross section is higher.

    • A measurement is presented of elastic deeply virtual Compton scattering gamma* p -> gamma p made using e(+) p collision data corresponding to a luminosity of 46.5 pb(-1), taken with the H1 detector at HERA. The cross section is measured as a function of the photon virtuality, Q(2), the invariant mass of the gamma* p system, W, and for the first time, differentially in the squared momentum transfer at the proton vertex, t, in the kinematic range 2 < Q(2) < 80 GeV2, 30 < W < 140 GeV and vertical bar t vertical bar < 1 GeV2. • 2005
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044. ; 41:3, s. 273-286
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Measurements are reported of the production of dijet events with a leading neutron in ep interactions at HERA. Differential cross sections for photoproduction and deep inelastic scattering are presented as a function of several kinematic variables. Leading order QCD simulation programs are compared with the measurements. Models in which the real or virtual photon interacts with a parton of an exchanged pion are able to describe the data. Next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations based on pion exchange are found to be in good agreement with the measured cross sections. The fraction of leading neutron dijet events with respect to all dijet events is also determined. The dijet events with a leading neutron have a lower fraction of resolved photon processes than do the inclusive dijet data.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Deep-inelastic ep scattering data taken with the H1 detector at HERA and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 106 pb(-1) are used to study the differential distributions of event shape variables. These include thrust, jet broadening, jet mass and the C-parameter. The four-momentum transfer Q is taken to be the relevant energy scale and ranges between 14 GeV and 200 GeV. The event shape distributions are compared with perturbative QCD predictions, which include resummed contributions and analytical power law corrections, the latter accounting for non-perturbative hadronisation effects. The data clearly exhibit the running of the strong coupling alpha(s)(Q) and are consistent with a universal power correction parameter alpha(0) for all event shape variables. A combined QCD fit using all event shape variables yields alpha(s)(m(Z)) = 0.1198 +/- 0.0013 (+0.0056)(-0.0043) and alpha(0) = 0.476 +/- 0.008 (+0.018)(-0.059).

  • Measurement of prompt photon cross sections in photoproduction at HERA
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044. ; 38:4, s. 437-445
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Results are presented on the photoproduction of isolated prompt photons, inclusively and associated with jets, in the gammap center of mass energy range 142 < W < 266 GeV. The cross sections are measured for the transverse momentum range of the photons 5 < E. T < 10 GeV and for associated jets with E-T(jet) > 4.5 GeV. They are measured differentially as a function of E-T(gamma), E-T(jet), the pseudorapidities eta(gamma) and eta(jet) and estimators of the momentum fractions x(gamma) and x(p) of the incident photon and proton carried by the constituents participating in the hard process. In order to further investigate the underlying dynamics, the angular correlation between the prompt photon and the jet in the transverse plane is studied. Predictions by perturbative QCD calculations in next to leading order are about 30% below the inclusive prompt photon data after corrections for hadronisation and multiple interactions, but are in reasonable agreement with the results for prompt photons associated with jets. Comparisons with the predictions of the event generators PYTHIA and HERWIG are also presented.
