  • Analytical Calculation of the Airgap Flux Density of PM Synchronous Motors with Buried Magnets Including Axial Leakage, Tooth and Yoke Saturations
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Proc. of the International Conference on Power Electronics and Variable Speed Drives, London, September 2000.. - : IEE. ; , s. 218-223
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It has been shown earlier that the airgap flux density of PM motors with buried magnets can be calculated with a satisfactory result, if saturated iron bridges, axial leakage flux (from 2D-FEM) and teeth saturation are taken into account. In this paper, instead of using 2D-FEM, an analytical expression for the axial reluctance is derived. By including the saturation of rotor and stator yokes, the model is even further improved. The result is a complete analytical model, which takes into account all phenomena mentioned above, and improves the agreement with experimental values.

  • Comparison between Different Ways to Calculate the Induced No-Load Voltage of PM Synchronous Motors using Finite Element Methods
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Proc. of the 4th IEEE International Conference on Power Electronics and Drive Systems (PEDS'01), Bali, Indonesia, October 2001, vol. 2.. ; , s. 468-474
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper two different ways of calculating the induced no-load voltage of permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM), by the use of a finite element method (FEM) program, have been compared. Neither of the two calculation methods require a FEM software package that can perform time-stepping. The number of required static FEM-calculations is limited to just a few, or even to one. The calculations are performed on five motor geometries. The results are compared to values obtained from time-stepping FEM-calculations, and to the measured induced no-load voltages of the five manufactured prototype motors. It can be seen that the least time-consuming method is accurate enough in most of these cases. The exceptions, in this study, are when there are relatively large airgaps and/or when the stator teeth are saturated.

  • Development and Efficiency Measurements of a Compact 15 kW 1500 r/min Integral Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Proc. of the IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting, Roma, Italy, October 2000.. ; , s. 155-162
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents the development of a 15 kW, 1500 r/min integral motor, with the same outer dimensions as an equivalent standard induction motor, but with the possibility of operating with speed control and at a higher efficiency. To make a compact integral motor, a permanent magnet rotor is used, the coils of the line-filter and the coil of the DC-link have been integrated with the stator core, only a small DC-link capacitor is employed, and the motor is controlled without a shaft sensor. Temperature and efficiency measurements on the manufactured prototype machine are performed and the results are very promising.

  • Rotor Cage Losses of an Inverter-Fed PMSM investigated with FEM
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the European Conference on Power Electronics and Applications, EPE´03.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the design of a compact inverter-fed buried permanent magnet synchronous motor, the high-frequency losses of the sparse rotor cage - which are difficult to predict - were assumed to be small. To investigate these ohmic high-frequency losses of the rotor cage, fixed-speed time-stepping 2D-FEM calculations have been carried out. The losses due to only the magnets, magnets and sinusoidal currents, high-frequency currents etc., and the actual currents are presented. The actual current wave-forms were obtained from measurements on the manufactured prototype motor.

  • A general algorithm for speed and position estimation of AC motors
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 0278-0046 .- 1557-9948. ; 47:1, s. 77-83
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A computationally efficient speed and position estimation algorithm, generally applicable to AC motor drives, is designed and analyzed. Applications include: (a) sensorless permanent-magnet and reluctance synchronous motor drives using the fundamental excitation as information source; (b) sensorless drives using saliency and signal injection; and (c) sensored drives using resolvers. Particular attention is given for case (a). Low parameter sensitivity in the entire speed range (except at low speeds for the reluctance motor)-implying a small position estimation error-and good dynamic properties at nominal speeds are verified.

  • A new physics-based circuit model for 4H-SiC power diodes implemented in SABER
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Proc. of the Sixteenth Annual IEEE Applied Power Electronics Conference and Exposition, 2001, APEC 2001, vol. 2,  4-8 March 2001.. ; , s. 989-994
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A circuit-oriented model for 4H-SiC power diodes is presented. The modeling technique used in this work was previously applied to a silicon (Si) power diode model for both turn-on and turn-off transients, and presents a good trade-off between accuracy and speed. The model is physics-based, but includes judicious approximations for fast calculation, and includes up-to-date physical models for silicon carbide, with temperature dependence. The proposed model is practically implemented in the circuit simulator SABER, using the MAST modeling language. Model performances are compared to measurements on 2.5 kV 400 A Si IGBT/SiC diode modules from ABB at various input currents.

  • An experimentally validated electro-thermal compact model for 4H-SiC power diodes
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Proc. of IEEE International Symposium on Industrial Electronics ISIE, 12-16 June 2001, vol. 2.. ; , s. 1345-1350
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The implementation of a circuit-oriented model for high-current, high-voltage 4H-SiC power diodes is presented. The compact modeling technique used presents a good trade-off between accuracy and speed for modeling of bipolar power devices, and a high flexibility for inclusion of various physical models. Implementation in the SABER circuit simulator of the model is performed using the MAST hardware description language (HDL). Up-to-date physical models for 4H-SiC semiconductor materials including thermal dependence, which are relevant for the device switching behavior are evaluated and implemented in the compact model. Simulation results using the proposed model are compared to both measurements and device simulations on 2.5 kV, 400 A Si-IGBT/4H-SiC diode modules from ABB at various circuit and temperature conditions. The model has proven to be a valuable simulation tool for investigation of future power circuit designs based on SiC technology.

  • Electro-Thermal Circuit Model for the Power Diode Turn-On Process
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Proc. of the IEEE Nordic Workshop on Power and Industrial Electronics, Aalborg, Denmark, June 2000.. ; , s. 69-73
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, a physics-based, electro-thermal model for thepower diode turn-on is presented. The model, implementedin the circuit simulator SABER, is based on an approximationof the carrier distribution in the n-base of the diode usingsecond degree polynomials, resulting in a fast but accuratecalculation method. The turn-on physics is accuratelydescribed by taking into account low injection level as well asa correct transport equation for the minority carriers. Modelperformances are compared both to device numerical simulationsand measurements and show good agreements forvarious circuit and temperature conditions, as well as for differentdevice designs.

  • Physics-Based Power Device Models in SABER - Implementation Issues
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Proc. of the IEEE Computer in Power Electronics, COMPEL 2000, Blacksburg, USA, August 2000.. ; , s. 18-22
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, the implementation issues of physics-based power device models in the SABER circuit simulator through the MAST High Description Language (HDL) are discussed. The possibility to use dynamical if-statements in the system matrix (equations section) of a MAST template is presented. By means of this implementation method, systems of differential equations for boundary value problems can be efficiently implemented and solved in SABER. To illustrate the method, the implementation of a physics-based power diode model is taken as an example. Simulation results using this model are presented to demonstrate the efficiency and numerical stability of the method.

  • Comparison of different Converters with Sinusoidal Line Currents suited for a 15 kW Permanent Magnet Integral Motor
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Proc. of the IEEE Nordic Workshop on Power and Industrial Electronics, Aalborg, Denmark, June 2000.. ; , s. 79-83
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper three different converter topologiesare compared concerning their usability for permanent magnet integral motors. In the analysis special attention is payed to the efficiency ofeach converter topology, since the volume of the converter is highly dependent on the cooling requirements. Aspects of power factor correction of the line currents are also included in this paper. Only two of the three converter topologies fulfill the EMC standards. The line-side switch-mode rectifier and the Vienna rectifier. Both have a satisfactory efficiency but the line-side switch-mode rectifier provides also a regenerative braking possibility.

  • Study of the Synchronization of Line-Start Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Proc. of the IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting, Roma, Italy, October 2000.. ; , s. 424-431
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The synchronization process of three-phase line start permanent magnet synchronous motors (LSPM) with buried magnets and a squirrel-cage is studied in this paper. The goal is to define a pull-in criterion by using a Lyapunov function. A model is first derived and a Lyapunov function is defined using the Lagrange-Charpit method. Experiments and simulations are then compared to check the validity of the model. A criterion to define the capability of synchronization of LSPM motors is then presented. This criterion is used to study the influence of the electrical parameters on the synchronization capability of two four pole LSPM motors. The first experiments proved that the prototypes have greater synchronization capability than the criterion predicts

  • Comparison of Commutation Transients of Inverters with Silicon Carbide JFETs with and without Body Diodes
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Nordic Workshop on Power and Industrial Electronics (NORpie).
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An inverter could be built by using silcon carbide power switches only. This can be done by using SiC JFETs which can conduct current in both directions. An interesting question is how an inverter using SiC JFETs with a body diode compares with an inverter using SiC JFETs without body diodes. This will be discussed in this paper.

  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Nordic Workshop on Power and Industrial Electronics, NORpie 2002.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper desccribes how a gate drive can be designed for use with SiC JFETs. The gate drive is supposed to be used in an experimental set-up, which means that the design is not adapted to production constraints. The gate drive circuit can be divvided into four parts: power stage, negative voltage protection, short-circuit protection, and logic unit, which all are desccribed.
