    • The environment for business enterprises and other organizations is changing rapidly and profoundly. These changes generate threats as well as possibilities. The threats are especially pronounced for small enterprises since they lack the large firm's resources to stand up to increasing international competition. One way for small enterprises to deal with this situation is to co-operate with other small enterprises. By pooling resources they may be able to maintain their positions and even move forward. An Multibusiness Co-operation System, MCS, includes many autonomous enterprises and is characterized by voluntary, long-term agreements, flexibility and commitment to a joint goal.The purpose of this dissertation is to answer the questions of why an MCS is established, what it should be based on, how to keep it together and who should establish the MCS.To answer these questions we have used a research strategy which can be described as multi-methodological. While starting out with an inductive approach, the theory thus generated has allowed an element of deduction at later stages.The inductive approach was used in an Experience study and in an In-Depth study. The Experience study showed that it was possible to identify promoting and obstructing factors for forming an MCS. The study also pointed out an existing MCS to be worthy an in-depth study.This MCS had existed for 20 years and consisted of 15 small enterprises within the joinery-industry. After having interviewed all managers including those who had left the MCS, and after analysing our results through interorganizational theories, we were able to generate a theory of Multibusiness Co-operation Systems. This theory can be divided into three different phases showing an MCS's lifecycle and what is important to consider during the three phases with respect to the Environment, what Bricks to use to form an MCS, the Concrete to use to keep the bricks together and, finally, who should be the Master Builder.The generated theory has an empirical as well as a theoretical basis but in our opinion it was not yet sufficiently grounded. One way to make it more grounded was to participate in a co-operation process and to learn by acquaintance and, thus, develop the theory.At this stage our research strategy has got an element of deduction while implementing the generated theory by action research within two different groups of small enterprises. The implementation was successful in both cases showing that the theory worked and even was developed. These two cases also brought some methodological experiences. We found that the dialogue method was fruitful and that different arenas for developmental work can be used during the three different phases of an MCS's lifecycle.

  • The first clinical pilot study of roquinimex (Linomide) in cancer patients with special focus on immunological effects

    • Roquinimex (Linomide) has been demonstrated to suppress tumor growth in animal models. The effect is at least in part related to enhanced numbers and activity of natural killer (NK) cells. In this clinical pilot study, roquinimex was given at increasing doses (0.05 mg/kg to 0.6 mg/kg) to 13 patients (performance status 0-3) with various malignant disorders. Immunology parameters were followed and side effects were observed during the study. The plasma pharmacokinetics of roquinimex was studied at the 0.2 mg/kg dose level. The clinical side effects were dominated by musculoskeletal discomfort, nausea, and pain. No significant hematological or biochemical toxicity was observed. Pharmacokinetic analysis at the 0.2 mg/kg dose level revealed a Cmax of 4.0 mumol/L at tmax of 1.2 hr and an elimination half-life of 42 hr. Increased numbers of phenotypic NK cells, activated T (DR+CD4+) cells, and monocytes were observed after administration of roquinimex compared with pretreatment values. Roquinimex seems to be an active immunomodulator with manageable toxicity. Further exploration of therapeutic efficacy is warranted.

  • Demonstration of digital radiographs by means of ink jet-printed paper copies : Pilot study

    • Different digital medical images have been printed on paper with a continuous ink jet printer, and the quality has been evaluated. The emphasis has been on digital chest radiographs from a computed radiography system. The ink jet printing technique is described as well as the handling of the image data from image source to printer. Different versions of paper prints and viewing conditions were compared to find the optimum alternative. The evaluation has been performed to maximize the quality of the paper images to make them conform with the corresponding film prints and monitor images as much as possible. The continuous ink jet technique offers high-quality prints on paper at a considerably lower cost per copy compared with the cost of a film print. With a future switch-over from diagnosing of digital images on film to diagnosing them on monitors, hard copies for demonstration purposes will occasionally be needed. This need can be filled by ink jetprinted paper copies.

  • The puzzle of autism: an ophthalmologic contribution.

    • A previous study of 86 thalidomide-affected subjects with ophthalmic manifestations revealed the unexpected finding of autism in 4 of the 5 severely retarded individuals. The subjects had anomalies associated with an early gestational effect of thalidomide, including facial nerve palsy and incomitant strabismus. Because autism has been observed in a few cases of Möbius sequence (Möbius syndrome), a condition characterized by involvement of the sixth and seventh cranial nerves, the similarity to early thalidomide embryopathy suggested a relation between cranial nerve involvement and autism. The present study was undertaken to further evaluate the association of autism with patients manifesting findings of Möbius syndrome.

    •   Change Strategies in Primary School  -  a leader perspective This thesis focuses on change strategies in the Swedish primary school. The schoolleaders have a new situation and role as change agents since the school was brought under local go­vern­ment control with among others the reguirement to be responsible for the local process of development in school. Further studies have the main focus on schoolleaders´ work situation and role, however not on how schoolleaders handle change processes. There are many studies from other organizations that show how important it is that the staff take part in local change pro­cesses.  In the decentralized school it is of great interest to have an elucidation of different change strategies and how the schoolleaders´ way to act have effects on the participation of the staff. Empirical data have been collected in case studies. This thesis is a separate part of a more com­prehensive research project in Swedish schools, called "The School in change". That project focuses on environmental work in the work organization and includes twelve schools.  Theese schools were chosen depending on their geografical situation and from the point that both the leader and the staff had a clear wish for active work with their working environment, by starting local development projects. Of these schools, I chose three that I wanted to study in another point of view. The research purposes were to describe and understand how schoolleaders, in this case prin­cipals, at the primary school work with change strategies. To reach my aim, I chose to study the change strategies of the principals from an actor´s point of view. Semi-structured inter­views were conducted at three times and to complete the picture from the answers, I used the ob­ser­vation method. Some data from a staff investigation in the main project "The School in change" has been used in this study, with a view to making the results clear and better under­standing them.   The main results from this study are that I am able to identify two different change strategies,  re­lated to the schoolleaders´ way of working with local development in the school orga­ni­za­tion. One of the schoolleaders has a stationary strategy and two schoolleaders have mobile stra­­­tegies. They are different in the way that the stationary schoolleader and one of the mobile lea­ders show a clear own change strategy of their own,  while one schoolleader has an imitated stra­tegy. The results also show that  the leader with her own and stationary strategy, has a gro­wing part of participating staff in ordinary work organization as in local development work. Another result is that in the schools with the mobile leaders the participation decreases. It makes no difference if the leader has her own or an imitated strategy for change and deve­lop­ment of the school.   Different kinds of theory have been used to interpret the results. Two aspects have been found important to be able to understand how the leaders of the school act with change strategies. These aspects are the work with the local development and the role and situation of leadership in school.
