  • Paper 6: EUROCAT Member Registries: Organization and Activities
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Birth Defects Research Part C: Embryo Today: Reviews. - : Wiley. - 1542-975X. ; 91:Suppl. 1, s. 51-100
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: EUROCAT is a network of population-based congenital anomaly registries providing standardized epidemiologic information on congenital anomalies in Europe. There are three types of EUROCAT membership: full, associate, or affiliate. Full member registries send individual records of all congenital anomalies covered by their region. Associate members transmit aggregate case counts for each EUROCAT anomaly subgroup by year and by type of birth. This article describes the organization and activities of each of the current 29 full member and 6 associate member registries of EUROCAT. METHODS: Each registry description provides information on the history and funding of the registry, population coverage including any changes in coverage over time, sources for ascertaining cases of congenital anomalies, and upper age limit for registering cases of congenital anomalies. It also details the legal requirements relating to termination of pregnancy for fetal anomalies, the definition of stillbirths and fetal deaths, and the prenatal screening policy within the registry. Information on availability of exposure information and denominators is provided. The registry description describes how each registry conforms to the laws and guidelines regarding ethics, consent, and confidentiality issues within their own jurisdiction. Finally, information on electronic and web-based data capture, recent registry activities, and publications relating to congenital anomalies, along with the contact details of the registry leader, are provided. CONCLUSIONS: The registry description gives a detailed account of the organizational and operational aspects of each registry and is an invaluable resource that aids interpretation and evaluation of registry prevalence data. • Energy level alignment in TiO2/metal sulfide/polymer interfaces for solar cell applications.
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Physical Chemistry, Chemical Physics - PCCP. - : Royal Society of Chemistry. - 1463-9076 .- 1463-9084. ; 16:32, s. 17099-107
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Semiconductor sensitized solar cell interfaces have been studied with photoelectron spectroscopy to understand the interfacial electronic structures. In particular, the experimental energy level alignment has been determined for complete TiO2/metal sulfide/polymer interfaces. For the metal sulfides CdS, Sb2S3 and Bi2S3 deposited from single source metal xanthate precursors, it was shown that both driving forces for electron injection into TiO2 and hole transfer to the polymer decrease for narrower bandgaps. The energy level alignment results were used in the discussion of the function of solar cells with the same metal sulfides as light absorbers. For example Sb2S3 showed the most favourable energy level alignment with 0.3 eV driving force for electron injection and 0.4 eV driving force for hole transfer and also the most efficient solar cells due to high photocurrent generation. The energy level alignment of the TiO2/Bi2S3 interface on the other hand showed no driving force for electron injection to TiO2, and the performance of the corresponding solar cell was very low.

  • Low-temperature solution processing of mesoporous metal-sulfide semiconductors as light-harvesting photoanodes.
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Angewandte Chemie International Edition. - : Wiley-VCH Verlagsgesellschaft. - 1433-7851 .- 1521-3773. ; 52:46, s. 12047-51

    • Structured absorbers: Mesoporous films of highly crystalline Sb 2S3 are prepared from a doctor-bladed precursor paste that is thermally annealed. This facile and versatile processing route allows for control of the pore size through variation of the annealing temperature. The resulting high surface area allows for efficient charge transfer to a polymeric hole acceptor; hence, such films could form the basis of a novel hybrid organic-inorganic photovoltaic device.

  • Design and implementation of an imprinted material for the exaction of the endocrine disruptor bisphenol A from milk
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of chromatography. B. - : Elsevier BV. - 1570-0232 .- 1873-376X. ; 931, s. 164-169
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper describes the determination of bisphenol A (BPA) in milk samples, using a novel molecularly imprinted polymer. The imprinted polymer was developed using a rational design approach, and pre-polymerization interactions were investigated using molecular dynamics simulations and X-ray crystallography. A hydroquinone-imprinted polymer was used for solid phase extraction (SPE) clean-up of samples. BPA was quantified by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and fluorescence (FLD) detection. Following validation, the method described was capable of determining bisphenol A in milk down to a limit of detection of 1.32 mu g kg(-1). The method was applied to a survey (n = 27) of commercial milk products; BPA was detected in one of the samples, at a level of 176 mu g kg(-1). Test results were confirmed by a parallel UHPLC-MS/MS analytical method. This demonstrates the utility of the hydroquinone-imprinted polymer for application to selective sample clean-up and analysis of bisphenol A in milk, avoiding possible detrimental affects associated with template bleeding and without the need for expensive or difficult-to-obtain template. • Investigation into the mechanism of solution-mediated transformation from FI to FIII carbamazepine : The role of dissolution and the interaction between polymorph surfaces
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Crystal Growth and Design. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1528-7505 .- 1528-7483. ; 13:5, s. 1861-1871
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The solution mediated polymorphic transformation (SMPT) of the pharmaceutical compound carbamazepine was investigated in ethanol. Bulk transformation experiments were performed by monitoring the solution concentration and polymorphic composition over time during the transformation from the metastable FI polymorph to the stable FIII polymorph for a variety of initial conditions. Microscopic techniques, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and computational methods were used to analyze the transformation. The nucleating behavior of the stable FIII polymorph was a significant factor affecting the transformation time across the range of experiments. The surfaces of the metastable FI particles were responsible for the nucleation of FIII during the transformation. However, no specific lattice matching or epitaxy was conclusively identified. A modest amount of dissolution of the FI particles was found to favor the nucleation of FIII but where extensive dissolution or no significant dissolution occurred this had a negative effect on the nucleation of FIII.

  • Measuring the solubility of a quickly transforming metastable polymorph of carbamazepine
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Organic Process Research and Development. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1083-6160 .- 1520-586X. ; 17:3, s. 512-518
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The solubility of the stable FIII polymorph of the pharmaceutical compound carbamazepine was measured by determining its solubility gravimetrically in ethanol and methanol. Where the metastable FI polymorph was suspended in a solution of ethanol, the stable FIII polymorph nucleated immediately, initiating a solution-mediated transformation from FI to FIII. This meant that the FI polymorph was not in thermodynamic equilibrium with the solution as FI was continually dissolving while FIII was growing. We show that the solubility of FI can be accurately measured by in situ microscopy using an adaption of the bracketing method, and the results show that the solubility is close to but higher than the maximum solution concentration reached during the solution mediated transformation from FI to FIII carbamazepine in both solvents. The technique demonstrates a relatively simple and robust method for determining the solubility of a metastable crystalline phase which transforms quickly in solution.

  • Research needs in allergy: an EAACI position paper, in collaboration with EFA.
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Clinical and translational allergy. - : Wiley. - 2045-7022. ; 2:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • ABSTRACT: In less than half a century, allergy, originally perceived as a rare disease, has become a major public health threat, today affecting the lives of more than 60 million people in Europe, and probably close to one billion worldwide, thereby heavily impacting the budgets of public health systems. More disturbingly, its prevalence and impact are on the rise, a development that has been associated with environmental and lifestyle changes accompanying the continuous process of urbanization and globalization. Therefore, there is an urgent need to prioritize and concert research efforts in the field of allergy, in order to achieve sustainable results on prevention, diagnosis and treatment of this most prevalent chronic disease of the 21st century. The European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI) is the leading professional organization in the field of allergy, promoting excellence in clinical care, education, training and basic and translational research, all with the ultimate goal of improving the health of allergic patients. The European Federation of Allergy and Airways Diseases Patients' Associations (EFA) is a non-profit network of allergy, asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder (COPD) patients' organizations. In support of their missions, the present EAACI Position Paper, in collaboration with EFA, highlights the most important research needs in the field of allergy to serve as key recommendations for future research funding at the national and European levels.Although allergies may involve almost every organ of the body and an array of diverse external factors act as triggers, there are several common themes that need to be prioritized in research efforts. As in many other chronic diseases, effective prevention, curative treatment and accurate, rapid diagnosis represent major unmet needs. Detailed phenotyping/endotyping stands out as widely required in order to arrange or re-categorize clinical syndromes into more coherent, uniform and treatment-responsive groups. Research efforts to unveil the basic pathophysiologic pathways and mechanisms, thus leading to the comprehension and resolution of the pathophysiologic complexity of allergies will allow for the design of novel patient-oriented diagnostic and treatment protocols. Several allergic diseases require well-controlled epidemiological description and surveillance, using disease registries, pharmacoeconomic evaluation, as well as large biobanks. Additionally, there is a need for extensive studies to bring promising new biotechnological innovations, such as biological agents, vaccines of modified allergen molecules and engineered components for allergy diagnosis, closer to clinical practice. Finally, particular attention should be paid to the difficult-to-manage, precarious and costly severe disease forms and/or exacerbations. Nonetheless, currently arising treatments, mainly in the fields of immunotherapy and biologicals, hold great promise for targeted and causal management of allergic conditions. Active involvement of all stakeholders, including Patient Organizations and policy makers are necessary to achieve the aims emphasized herein.
