  • Photon-hadron jet correlations in p plus p and Au plus Au collisions at s(NN)=200 GeV
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). - 0556-2813. ; 80:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report the observation at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider of suppression of back-to-back correlations in the direct photon+jet channel in Au+Au relative to p+p collisions. Two-particle correlations of direct photon triggers with associated hadrons are obtained by statistical subtraction of the decay photon-hadron (gamma-h) background. The initial momentum of the away-side parton is tightly constrained, because the parton-photon pair exactly balance in momentum at leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics, making such correlations a powerful probe of the in-medium parton energy loss. The away-side nuclear suppression factor, I-AA, in central Au+Au collisions, is 0.32 +/- 0.12(stat)+/- 0.09(syst) for hadrons of 3 < p(T)(h)< 5 in coincidence with photons of 5 < p(T)(gamma)< 15 GeV/c. The suppression is comparable to that observed for high-p(T) single hadrons and dihadrons. The direct photon associated yields in p+p collisions scale approximately with the momentum balance, z(T)equivalent to p(T)(h)/p(T)(gamma), as expected for a measurement of the away-side parton fragmentation function. We compare to Au+Au collisions for which the momentum balance dependence of the nuclear modification should be sensitive to the path-length dependence of parton energy loss.

  • Charged hadron multiplicity fluctuations in Au plus Au and Cu plus Cu collisions from s(NN)=22.5 to 200 GeV
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). - 0556-2813. ; 78:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A comprehensive survey of event-by-event fluctuations of charged hadron multiplicity in relativistic heavy ions is presented. The survey covers Au+Au collisions at s(NN)=62.4 and 200 GeV, and Cu+Cu collisions at s(NN)=22.5,62.4, and 200 GeV. Fluctuations are measured as a function of collision centrality, transverse momentum range, and charge sign. After correcting for nondynamical fluctuations due to fluctuations in the collision geometry within a centrality bin, the remaining dynamical fluctuations expressed as the variance normalized by the mean tend to decrease with increasing centrality. The dynamical fluctuations are consistent with or below the expectation from a superposition of participant nucleon-nucleon collisions based upon p+p data, indicating that this dataset does not exhibit evidence of critical behavior in terms of the compressibility of the system. A comparison of the data with a model where hadrons are independently emitted from a number of hadron clusters suggests that the mean number of hadrons per cluster is small in heavy ion collisions.

  • Cold nuclear matter effects on J/psi production as constrained by deuteron-gold measurements at root S-NN=200 GeV
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). - 0556-2813. ; 77:2, s. 15-024912
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a new analysis of J/psi production yields in deuteron-gold collisions at root s(NN) =200 GeV using data taken from the PHENIX experiment in 2003 and previously published in S. S. Adler [Phys. Rev. Lett 96, 012304 (2006)]. The high statistics proton-proton J/psi data taken in 2005 are used to improve the baseline measurement and thus construct updated cold nuclear matter modification factors (R-dAu). A suppression of J/psi in cold nuclear matter is observed as one goes forward in rapidity (in the deuteron-going direction), corresponding to a region more sensitive to initial-state low-x gluons in the gold nucleus. The measured nuclear modification factors are compared to theoretical calculations of nuclear shadowing to which a J/psi (or precursor) breakup cross section is added. Breakup cross sections of sigma(breakup)=2.8(-1.4)(+1.7) (2.2(-1.5)(+1.6)) mb are obtained by fitting these calculations to the data using two different models of nuclear shadowing. These breakup cross-section values are consistent within large uncertainties with the 4.2 +/- 0.5 mb determined at lower collision energies. Projecting this range of cold nuclear matter effects to copper-copper and gold-gold collisions reveals that the current constraints are not sufficient to firmly quantify the additional hot nuclear matter effect.

  • Measurement of Bottom Versus Charm as a Function of Transverse Momentum with Electron-Hadron Correlations in p plus p Collisions at s=200 GeV
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114. ; 103:8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The momentum distribution of electrons from semileptonic decays of charm and bottom quarks for midrapidity |y|< 0.35 in p+p collisions at s=200 GeV is measured by the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider over the transverse momentum range 2 < p(T)< 7 GeV/c. The ratio of the yield of electrons from bottom to that from charm is presented. The ratio is determined using partial D/D -> e(+/-)K(-/+)X (K unidentified) reconstruction. It is found that the yield of electrons from bottom becomes significant above 4 GeV/c in p(T). A fixed-order-plus-next-to-leading-log perturbative quantum chromodynamics calculation agrees with the data within the theoretical and experimental uncertainties. The extracted total bottom production cross section at this energy is sigma(bb)=3.2(-1.1)(+1.2)(stat)(-1.3)(+1.4)(syst)mu b.

  • Onset of pi(0) Suppression Studied in Cu plus Cu Collisions at root s(NN)=22.4, 62.4, and 200 GeV
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114. ; 101:16
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Neutral pion transverse momentum (p(T)) spectra at midrapidity (|y| less than or similar to 0.35) were measured in Cu + Cu collisions at root s(NN) = 22.4, 62.4, and 200 GeV. Relative to pi(0) yields in p + p collisions scaled by the number of inelastic nucleon-nucleon collisions (N-coll) the pi(0) yields for p(T) greater than or similar to 2 GeV/c in central Cu + Cu collisions are suppressed at 62.4 and 200 GeV whereas an enhancement is observed at 22.4 GeV. A comparison with a jet-quenching model suggests that final state parton energy loss dominates in central Cu + Cu collisions at 62.4 and 200 GeV, while the enhancement at 22.4 GeV is consistent with nuclear modifications in the initial state alone.

  • System size and energy dependence of jet-induced hadron pair correlation shapes in Cu+Cu and Au+Au collisions at root S-NN 200 and 62.4 GeV
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114. ; 98:23
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present azimuthal angle correlations of intermediate transverse momentum (1-4 GeV/c) hadrons from dijets in Cu+Cu and Au+Au collisions at root s(NN)=62.4 and 200 GeV. The away-side dijet induced azimuthal correlation is broadened, non-Gaussian, and peaked away from Delta phi=pi in central and semicentral collisions in all the systems. The broadening and peak location are found to depend upon the number of participants in the collision, but not on the collision energy or beam nuclei. These results are consistent with sound or shock wave models, but pose challenges to Cherenkov gluon radiation models.

  • Gluon-Spin Contribution to the Proton Spin from the Double-Helicity Asymmetry in Inclusive pi(0) Production in Polarized p plus p Collisions at root s=200 GeV
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114. ; 103:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The double helicity asymmetry in neutral pion production for p(T) = 1 to 12 GeV/c was measured with the PHENIX experiment to access the gluon-spin contribution, Delta G, to the proton spin. Measured asymmetries are consistent with zero, and at a theory scale of mu 2 = 4 GeV2 a next to leading order QCD analysis gives Delta G([0.02,0.3]) = 0.2, with a constraint of -0.7 < Delta G([0.02,0.3]) < 0.5 at Delta chi(2) = 9 (similar to 3 sigma) for the sampled gluon momentum fraction (x) range, 0.02 to 0.3. The results are obtained using predictions for the measured asymmetries generated from four representative fits to polarized deep inelastic scattering data. We also consider the dependence of the Delta G constraint on the choice of the theoretical scale, a dominant uncertainty in these predictions.

  • Inclusive cross section and double helicity asymmetry for pi(0) production in p plus p collisions at root s=62.4 GeV
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Physical Review D (Particles, Fields, Gravitation and Cosmology). - 1550-2368. ; 79:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The PHENIX experiment presents results from the RHIC 2006 run with polarized p + p collisions at root s = 62.4 GeV, for inclusive pi(0) production at midrapidity. Unpolarized cross section results are measured for transverse momenta p(T) = 0.5 to 7 GeV/c. Next-to-leading order perturbative quantum chromodynamics calculations are compared with the data, and while the calculations are consistent with the measurements, next-to-leading logarithmic corrections improve the agreement. Double helicity asymmetries A(LL) are presented for p(T) = 1 to 4 GeV/c and probe the higher range of Bjorken x of the gluon (x(g)) with better statistical precision than our previous measurements at root s = 200 GeV. These measurements are sensitive to the gluon polarization in the proton for 0.06 < x(g) < 0.4.

  • Suppression Pattern of Neutral Pions at High Transverse Momentum in Au plus Au Collisions at root S-NN=200 GeV and Constraints on Medium Transport Coefficients
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114. ; 101:23
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • For Au + Au collisions at 200 GeV, we measure neutral pion production with good statistics for transverse momentum, p(T), up to 20 GeV/c. A fivefold suppression is found, which is essentially constant for 5 < p(T) < 20 GeV/c. Experimental uncertainties are small enough to constrain any model-dependent parametrization for the transport coefficient of the medium, e. g., <(q) over cap > in the parton quenching model. The spectral shape is similar for all collision classes, and the suppression does not saturate in Au + Au collisions.

  • Correlated production of p and (p)over-bar in Au+Au collisions at root s(NN)=200 GeV

  • Ingår i: Physics Letters. Section B: Nuclear, Elementary Particle and High-Energy Physics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693. ; 649:5-6, s. 359-369
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Correlations between p and (p) over bar at transverse momenta typical of enhanced baryon production in Au + Au collisions are reported. The PHENIX experiment has measured same and opposite sign baryon pairs in Au + Au collisions at root s(NN) = 200 GeV. Correlated production of p and p with the trigger particle from the range 2.5 < p(T) < 4.0 GeV/c and the associated particle with 1.8 < p(T) < 2.5 GeV/c is observed to be nearly independent of the centrality of the collisions. Same sign pairs show no correlation at any centrality. The conditional yield of mesons triggered by baryons (and anti-baryons) and mesons in the same p(T) range rises with increasing centrality, except for the most central collisions, where baryons show a significantly smaller number of associated mesons. These data are consistent with a picture in which hard scattered partons produce correlated p and (p) over bar in the p(T) region of the baryon excess. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  • Dihadron azimuthal correlations in Au+Au collisions at root s(NN)=200 GeV
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). - 0556-2813. ; 78:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Azimuthal angle (Delta phi) correlations are presented for a broad range of transverse momentum (0.4 < p(T) < 10 GeV/c) and centrality (0-92%) selections for charged hadrons from dijets in Au+Au collisions at root s(NN) = 200 GeV. With increasing p(T), the away-side Delta phi distribution evolves from a broad and relatively flat shape to a concave shape, then to a convex shape. Comparisons with p + p data suggest that the away-side distribution can be divided into a partially suppressed "head" region centered at Delta phi similar to pi, and an enhanced "shoulder" region centered at Delta phi similar to pi +/- 1.1. The p(T) spectrum for the associated hadrons in the head region softens toward central collisions. The spectral slope for the shoulder region is independent of centrality and trigger p(T). The properties of the near-side distributions are also modified relative to those in p + p collisions, reflected by the broadening of the jet shape in Delta phi and Delta eta, and an enhancement of the per-trigger yield. However, these modifications seem to be limited to p(T)less than or similar to 4 GeV/c, above which both the hadron pair shape and per-trigger yield become similar to p + p collisions. These observations suggest that both the away- and near-side distributions contain a jet fragmentation component which dominates for p(T) greater than or similar to 5 GeV/c and a medium-induced component which is important for p(T) less than or similar to 4 GeV/c. We also quantify the role of jets at intermediate and low p(T) through the yield of jet-induced pairs in comparison with binary scaled p + p pair yield. The yield of jet-induced pairs is suppressed at high pair proxy energy (sum of the p(T) magnitudes of the two hadrons) and is enhanced at low pair proxy energy. The former is consistent with jet quenching; the latter is consistent with the enhancement of soft hadron pairs due to transport of lost energy to lower p(T).

  • Energy loss and flow of heavy quarks in Au+Au collisions at root s(NN) = 200 GeV
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114. ; 98:17
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The PHENIX experiment at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) has measured electrons with 0.3 < p(T) < 9 GeV/c at midrapidity (y < 0.35) from heavy-flavor (charm and bottom) decays in Au + Au collisions at root s(NN) = 200 GeV. The nuclear modification factor R-AA relative to p + p collisions shows a strong suppression in central Au + Au collisions, indicating substantial energy loss of heavy quarks in the medium produced at RHIC energies. A large azimuthal anisotropy v(2) with respect to the reaction plane is observed for 0.5 < p(T) < 5 GeV/c indicating substantial heavy-flavor elliptic flow. Both R-AA and v(2) show a p(T) dependence different from those of neutral pions. A comparison to transport models which simultaneously describe R-AA(p(T)) and v(2)(p(T)) suggests that the viscosity to entropy density ratio is close to the conjectured quantum lower bound, i.e., near a perfect fluid.

    • The PHENIX experiment at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) has measured J/psi production for rapidities -2.2 < y < 2.2 in Au+Au collisions at root s(NN)=200 GeV. The J/psi invariant yield and nuclear modification factor R-AA as a function of centrality, transverse momentum, and rapidity are reported. A suppression of J/psi relative to binary collision scaling of proton-proton reaction yields is observed. Models which describe the lower energy J/psi data at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron invoking only J/psi destruction based on the local medium density predict a significantly larger suppression at RHIC and more suppression at midrapidity than at forward rapidity. Both trends are contradicted by our data.

  • Quantitative constraints on the transport properties of hot partonic matter from semi-inclusive single high transverse momentum pion suppression in Au plus Au collisions at root S-NN=200 GeV
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). - 0556-2813. ; 77:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The PHENIX experiment has measured the suppression of semi-inclusive single high-transverse-momentum pi(0)'s in Au+Au collisions at root s(NN) = 200 GeV. The present understanding of this suppression is in terms of energy loss of the parent (fragmenting) parton in a dense color-charge medium. We have performed a quantitative comparison between various parton energy-loss models and our experimental data. The statistical point-to-point uncorrelated as well as correlated systematic uncertainties are taken into account in the comparison. We detail this methodology and the resulting constraint on the model parameters, such as the initial color-charge density dN(g)/dy, the medium transport coefficient <(q) over cap >, or the initial energy-loss parameter epsilon(0). We find that high-transverse-momentum pi(0) suppression in Au+Au collisions has sufficient precision to constrain these model-dependent parameters at the +/- 20-25% (one standard deviation) level. These constraints include only the experimental uncertainties, and further studies are needed to compute the corresponding theoretical uncertainties.

    • Differential measurements of elliptic flow (v(2)) for Au+Au and Cu+Cu collisions at root s(NN)=200 GeV are used to test and validate predictions from perfect fluid hydrodynamics for scaling of v(2) with eccentricity, system size, and transverse kinetic energy (KET). For KET equivalent to m(T)-m up to similar to 1 GeV the scaling is compatible with hydrodynamic expansion of a thermalized fluid. For large values of KET mesons and baryons scale separately. Quark number scaling reveals a universal scaling of v(2) for both mesons and baryons over the full KET range for Au+Au. For Au+Au and Cu+Cu the scaling is more pronounced in terms of KET, rather than transverse momentum.

    • PHENIX has measured the electron-positron pair mass spectrum from 0 to 8 GeV/c(2) in p + p collisions at root s = 200 GeV. The contributions from light meson decays to e(+)e(-) pairs have been determined based on measurements of hadron production cross sections by PHENIX. Within the systematic uncertainty of similar to 20% they account for all e(+)e(-) pairs in the mass region below similar to 1 GeV/c(2). The e(+)e(-) pair yield remaining after subtracting these contributions is dominated by semileptonic decays of charmed hadrons correlated through flavor conservation. Using the spectral shape predicted by PYTHIA, we estimate the charm production cross section to be 544 +/- 39(stat) +/- 142(syst) +/- 200(model) pb. which is consistent with QCD calculations and measurements of single leptons by PHENIX. • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • cw hot photoluminescence (PL) complemented by transient PL measurements is employed to evaluate momentum and spin relaxation of heavy hole (HH) excitons in ZnMnSe CdSe superlattices. The rate of acoustic-phonon assisted momentum relaxation is concluded to be comparable to the total rate of exciton decay processes, about (2-3) × 1010 s-1, independent of applied magnetic fields. In magnetic fields when the Zeeman splitting ? of the exciton states is below the energy of the longitudinal optical (LO) phonon (?LO), a surprisingly strong suppression of spin relaxation rate from the bottom of the upper spin band is observed, which becomes comparable to that of momentum scattering via acoustic phonons. On the other hand, dramatic acceleration of the spin relaxation process by more than one order of magnitude is found for the excitons with a high momentum K. The findings are interpreted as being due to electron and hole spin flip processes via exchange interaction with isolated Mn2+ ions. Experimental evidence for the efficient interaction between the hot excitons and Mn impurities is also provided by the observation of spin flip transitions within Mn2+ - Mn2+ pairs that accompany the momentum relaxation of the hot HH excitons. In higher magnetic fields ?= ?LO, abrupt shortening of the spin flip time is observed. It indicates involvement of a new and more efficient spin relaxation process and is attributed to direct LO-assisted exciton spin relaxation with a subpicosecond spin relaxation time. © 2005 The American Physical Society.

    • We show, by time-resolved magneto-photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy in combination with selective laser excitation, that optical polarization of the ZnCdSe spin detector induced by spin injection from the ZnMnSe spin injector persists over a much longer time scale than the lifetime of the ZnMnSe excitons. This finding provides compelling experimental evidence that the dominant mechanism for the observed spin injection in the ZnMnSe/ZnCdSe structures should not be due to injection of the excitonic spins of the diluted magnetic semiconductor (DMS). It is rather due to e.g. a delayed spin injection arising from tunneling of individual carriers or/and trapped spins in ZnMnSe.

Strong separation of the electrons, confined to the nonmagnetic semiconductor ZnSSe, and holes, confined to the diluted magnetic semiconductor ZnMnSe, results in an exciton lifetime exceeding 3 ns. Two excitonic emission lines are observed in this structure at low temperatures. The lower-energy line was associated with the formation of an exciton magnetic polaron (EMP), whereas the higher-energy line was attributed to the emission of nonmagnetically localized excitons. The intensity of the EMP line was found to saturate at a relatively low density of photoexcited carriers well below the exciton Mott density. This behavior evidences a limited density of sites where the hole localization radius is small enough to ensure the fast formation of EMP's with a noticeable binding energy. © 2006 The American Physical Society.

    • Two dominant factors limiting efficiency of optical spin detection in ZnO-based materials system are identified from time-resolved optical orientation and magneto-optical studies. The first is related to the fundamental band structure of the materials characterized by a weak spin-orbit interaction. It leads to cancellation of circular polarization from the optical transitions between the conduction band and the A and B valence band states, which would otherwise carry the desired information on spin polarization of carriers. The second limiting factor is shown to be efficient carrier/exciton spin relaxation, i.e., about 45-80 ps.

  • Magneto-optical and tunable laser excitation spectroscopy of spin-injection and spin loss from Zn(Cd)MnSe diluted magnetic quantum well to CdSe non-magnetic quantum dots

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Magneto-optical spectroscopy in combination with tunable laser spectroscopy is employed to study the effect of sample design on optical spin-injection efficiency from a Zn(Cd)MnSe diluted magnetic semiconductor (DMS) into non-magnetic CdSe quantum dots (QDs). Two samples with inverted growth sequence of the DMS and QD layers were grown for this purpose. Despite observation of clear evidence for exciton/carrier-injection from the DMS to the QDs in both structures, their spin-injection efficiency is markedly different. The structure grown with the QD layer topmost exhibits rather efficient spin-injection, while the structure grown with the DMS layer topmost does not show any sign of spin-injection. Even in the former case, the spin-polarization of the injected excitons/carriers is deduced to be about 32%, decreasing from 100% before the injection. The observed spin loss is shown to occur during the spin-injection across the heterointerfaces. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

    • Dynamics of spin injection has been studied in double quantum wells (DQWs) composed of diluted magnetic and non-magnetic semiconductors. Picosecond-transient photoluminescence (PL) of excitons in the DQWs has been measured in magnetic field. In the Cd1-xMnxTe-based DQWs, the PL intensity of the magnetic well (MW) excitons decays faster with decreasing barrier width from 12 to 2 nm. This provides the evidence for carrier tunneling from the MW to the non-magnetic well (NW) through the barrier layer. The degree of circular polarization in the transient PL of the NW exciton in magnetic field shows marked evidence for spin injection and rapid spin relaxation in the DQW system. In the Zn1-yMnySe-based DQWs, the degree of circle polarization in the NW exciton PL at 3T shows a rise with a time constant of 400 ps, while the PL of the MW exciton decays within 50 ps. The observed result is interpreted by the individual spin injection for electrons and holes from the MW to the NW. The results of the transient PL of excitons in the DQWs are compared with the transient absorptions of excitons studied by the pump-and-probe spectroscopy. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

    • In this paper we review our recent results from in-depth investigations of physical mechanisms which govern efficiency of several processes important for future spintronic devises, such as spin alignment within diluted magnetic semiconductors (DMS), spin injection from DMS to non-magnetic spin detectors (SDs) and also spin depolarization within SD. Spin-injection structures based on II-VIs (e.g. ZnMnSe/Zn(Cd)Se) and III-Vs (e.g. GaMnN/Ga(In)N) were studied as model cases. Exciton spin relaxation within ZnMnSe DMS, important for spin alignment, was found to critically depend on Zeeman splitting of the exciton states and is largely facilitated by involvement of longitudinal optical (LO) phonons. Optical spin injection in ZnMnSe/Zn(Cd)Se was shown to be governed by (i) commonly believed tunneling of individual carriers or excitons and (ii) energy transfer via localized excitons and spatially separated localized electron-hole pairs (LEHP) located within DMS. Unexpectedly, the latter mechanism is in fact found to dominate spin injections. We shall also show that spin depolarization in the studied structures is essentially determined by efficient spin relaxation within non-magnetic spin detectors, which is an important factor limiting efficiency of spin detection. Detailed physical mechanisms leading to efficient spin depolarization will be discussed.

    • Transient magneto-optical spectroscopy of InGaNGaN and InGaNGaMnN quantum wells reveals a spin relaxation process with a characteristic time of 50 ps. We show that the observed spin relaxation is mediated by spin flips of individual carriers rather than by direct exciton spin flips, and is proposed to occur near the bottom of the exciton band (K=0). Nearly complete thermalization between spin sublevels of the excitons, observed immediately after the pulsed photoexcitation, is attributed to even faster spin relaxation of photogenerated hot carriers/excitons accompanying momentum and energy relaxation at high K vectors. © 2005 American Institute of Physics.

    • Spin injection processes from a Zn0.80Mn0.20Se diluted magnetic semiconductor (DMS) to adjacent self-assembled CdSe quantum dots (QDs) were investigated by cw and time-resolved magneto-optical spectroscopy in combination with tunable laser excitation. Direct experimental evidence for the spin injection was provided from the generation of the spin polarization in the QDs, which was opposite to their expected intrinsic polarization, by resonantly generating the spins in the DMS. The observed limited spin polarization generated by the spin injection, together with the sensitivity of the spin injection efficiency on structure design, indicates severe spin loss during the process and calls for further investigations to optimize spin injection efficiency in quantum structures. © 2007 Elsevier Ltd. • We study the spin injection dynamics and the effects of spin relaxation in self-assembled quantum dots (QDs) of CdSe coupled with a diluted magnetic semiconductor (DMS) layer of ZnMnSe, where spin-polarized excitons can be injected from the DMS into the QDs because of the potential difference. The degree of circular polarization, $P$, of excitonic photoluminescence (PL) at 5 T in the coupled QDs shows a rapid increase with increasing delay time after a linearly polarized pulse excitation, indicating the spin-injection dynamics. The $P$ value tends to decay gradually because of the exciton-spin relaxation in the QDs after the spin injection. The spin-polarized excitons in the QD ensemble migrate simultaneously from QDs with higher exciton energies to those with lower exciton energies. This inter-dot transfer of excitons also affects the $P$ value in the lower energy region of the QD-emission band because the excitons lose their spin polarizations due to the spin relaxation in the dots during the migration. The detailed analysis for the exciton-spin transfer is presented in a coupled QD system after spin injection.

    • We study the dynamics of exciton-spin injection, transfer, and relaxation in self-assembled quantum dots (QDs) of CdSe coupled with a diluted magnetic semiconductor (DMS) layer of Zn0.80 Mn0.20 Se, where spin-polarized excitons can be injected from the DMS into the QDs. The degree of circular polarization P of excitonic photoluminescence (PL) at 5 T in the coupled QDs exhibits a rapid increase with increasing delay time, up to +0.3 at 25 ps after the pulse excitation of the DMS by a linearly polarized light. This development of a positive P value directly reflects the spin-injection dynamics from the DMS, since the intrinsic polarization of the QD excitons due to Zeeman splitting is P∼-0.1 when only the QDs are selectively excited. The P value gradually decays with time after reaching its maximum, as a result of the exciton-spin relaxation with a time constant of 800 ps in the QDs. Time-resolved circularly polarized PL spectra immediately after the pulse excitation directly show the exciton-energy dependence of the spin-injection dynamics in the QD ensemble, where two-dimensional-like QDs with higher exciton energies show higher receptivity to the spin-polarized excitons than three-dimensional-like dots with lower exciton energies. A rate equation analysis reveals all time constants responsible for the spin-injection dynamics. We deduce a time constant of 10 ps for the spin injection. The spin-injection efficiency of 0.94 is also obtained, which corresponds to the ratio between the number of the spin-polarized excitons responsible for the rise of the positive P value in the QD emission and the total number of the excitons injected from the DMS. Moreover, we observe that interdot exciton transfer significantly affects the P value within the QD emission band after the fast spin injection, in addition to the spin relaxation within the QDs. © 2007 The American Physical Society.

    • We study the transfer dynamics of spin-polarized excitons in diluted magnetic semiconductor (DMS) double quantum wells (QWs) of ZnCdMnSe/ZnCdSe, where the spin-polarized excitons tunnel from the non-magnetic ZnCdSe to DMS-ZnCdMnSe wells and subsequently relax to the ground state in the DMS well with phonon emissions. The exciton-transfer time decreases when the exciton-energy difference between both the wells is equal to the one-LO-phonon energy, indicating the LO-phonon-assisted acceleration of the spin transfer. Moreover, the exciton transfer alters into the separate transfer of the electron and the heavy hole when the electron potential difference becomes larger than the LO-phonon energy. This observation demonstrates the importance of energy-relaxation dynamics in the spatial transport of spins in semiconductor quantum structures.
