  • Affärsstrategier för seniorbostadsmarknaden
  • 2005

  • Mobilising and nurturing collaboration in research - the value of a focused imagination
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Action Research. - 1861-1303 .- 1861-9916. ; 3:No 3, s. 297-327
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    •    Establishing and nurturing contacts are important and time-consuming elements of interactive research. It is usually the researcher who has to establish and nurture collaboration with practitioners, a task that is not normally part of traditional research. A mutual interest in the subject of the research is a prerequisite for collaboration, but there are quite often other factors that explain why collaboration begins and endures. On the basis of the experience gained in a number of interactive research projects, we address the conditions required for an effective and lasting interplay between collaborating partners. Theoretical inspiration has been provided by studies of so-called imaginary organisations.

  • Py-CIU: A Python Library for Explaining Machine Learning Predictions Using Contextual Importance and Utility
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Proceedings.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this paper, we present the Py-CIU library, a generic Python tool for applying the Contextual Importance and Utility (CIU) explainable machine learning method. CIU uses concepts from decision theory to explain a machine learning model’s prediction specific to a given data point by investigating the importance and usefulness of individual features (or feature combinations) to a prediction. The explanations aim to be intelligible to machine learning experts as well as non-technical users. The library can be applied to any black-box model that outputs a prediction value for all classes

  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Ellipsometry of Functional Organic Surface and Films. - Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin/Heidelberg. - 9783642401275 - 9783642401282 ; , s. 249-264
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ellipsometry configurations in internal reflection mode facilitate studies of adsorption processes without the light beam passing through the medium from which adsorption occurs. Monitoring of adsorption processes on surfaces in opaque media is thus possible. If the surface in addition has a thin semitransparent metal film in which surface plasmon polaritons can be excited, one can achieve very high sensitivity to small changes in surface mass density of an adsorbed biolayer. Thickness changes as small as one pm can be resolved. In this chapter the theory for Total Internal Reflection Ellipsometry (TIRE), also called surface plasmon resonance enhanced ellipsometry, will be described and instrumentation will be briefly discussed. TIRE applied in spectroscopic as well as in angle of incidence interrogation modes will be considered. Finally applications in the areas of bioadsorption processes, biosensing, gas adsorption and biolayer imaging will be reviewed.

  • Contrasting geochemistry of orogenic gold deposits in Yukon, Canada and Otago, New Zealand
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Geochemistry. - : Geological Society of London. - 1467-7873 .- 2041-4943. ; 15:2-3, s. 150-166
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Yukon-Tanana Terrane (YTT) of western Yukon Territory in NW Canada and Otago Schist belt (OSB) of South Island, New Zealand share similar geological evolutionary histories as convergent orogenic belts. Both belts host orogenic gold deposits of mainly Jurassic to Early Cretaceous age. Jurassic mineralization in the YTT occurred during convergent orogenesis and stacking of previously-metamorphosed (Palaeozoic) greenschist-amphibolite facies metasediments, metavolcanic rocks, and metagranitoids. Early Cretaceous OSB mineralization occurred in the latter stages of terrane accretion of un-metamorphosed turbidites with minor basaltic rocks. Metamorphism of the OSB turbidites mobilised background levels of Au (0.6-1.3 ppb), As (2-20 ppm), Sb (0.1-1 ppm), and W (< 10 ppm), primarily under greenschist to lower amphibolite facies conditions when diagenetic pyrite (Au c.0.5-2 ppm; As c.500-10000 ppm) transformed to pyrrhotite on a regional scale. In contrast, the previously-metamorphosed YTT rocks had generally low background As contents (1-2 ppm) apart from some As-rich quartzites (up to 100 ppm As). Consequently, there was less As available for orogenic mobilisation, and YTT Au deposits generally have lower concentrations of this pathfinder element compared to the OSB. YTT host rocks, especially metagranitoids, have anomalous levels of Mo (10-300 ppm), and many orogenic deposits contain elevated Mo, locally including molybdenite. OSB turbidites have elevated Mo (2-200 ppm), along with elevated Au and As, in diagenetic pyrite, but this Mo became largely dispersed through the metamorphic pile as metamorphic grade increased and pyrite transformed to pyrrhotite. OSB orogenic deposits have only marginally elevated Mo (c.1 ppm), no molybdenite, and accessory scheelite in these deposits is distinctly Mo-poor. Only minor mobilisation of base metals occurred in these orogenic belts, and orogenic Au deposits contain sparse base metal sulphides. Orogenic deposits in the YTT and OSB differ in that Au (and other associated elements) in many of the orogenic deposits in the YTT was remobilised from relatively local sources (e.g. pre-existing Cu-Mo-Au porphyry or volcanogenic sulphide mineralization) whereas Au in the OSB was mobilised from larger volumes of homogeneous rock at depth.

  • Coordination in interorganizational relations : perspective of dominated suppliers
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This article relates to the debate on control in interorganizational relations. The article aims at providing an understanding of how bureaucratic mechanisms interrelate with market and social mechanisms in this setting, and the perspective of a dominated supplier is especially focused. The article is based on observation with complementary interviews of relations between an industrial customer and two of its suppliers. The study shows restrictions put on the dominated suppliers from the customer, restrictions which from the suppliers' perspective motivate to question the efficiency of interorganizational, bureaucratic control. The suppliers' perceived need to adapt to the customers' routines is more motivated by a fear of challenging the customer than a concern for overall efficiency in the supply chain. The different mechanisms of governance operate in relation to each other. Mainly, market dominance creates space for hierarchical coordination. However, bureaucratic mechanisms do not suit every situation and social mechanisms enter - in some cases even to overrule bureaucratic mechanisms.

  • Gefiolierte blüte kunst : Eine kognitionslinguistisch orientierte Untersuchung zur Metaphorik in Frauenlobs Marienleich
  • 2018
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Heinrich of Meißen, also known as Frauenlob († 1318), is a central figure in Middle High German literature. As is evident from its early reception, his work was highly admired in the middle ages. In research literature, however, his ‘obscure’ poetry initially was faced with a lack of understanding. The main challenge for comprehending Frauenlob lies in his rich metaphorics. However, despite the importance of the metaphors in Frauenlob’s work, the question about their role in the construction of meaning was not seriously raised until the last decades and has not yet been thoroughly investigated. This problem is all the more serious as Frauenlob’s poetry, which has often been attributed with a seemingly ‘modern’ ambivalence, is at the centre of the recent debate of the historicity of metaphor. His poetry offers a fruitful empirical entry to the important issues whether metaphors are interpreted today in the same way as in the middle ages, and whether modern theories of metaphor are adequate for the historical analysis of medieval metaphorics. The present study aims to describe and explain how the metaphors in Frauenlob’s Marienleich functions. It is shown that the traditional substitution account of metaphor leads to a reductionist view of the construction of meaning in this text. The modern interaction account also contains aspects whose suitability with regard to the medieval expectations on the production of meaning can be questioned. As an alternative, the present investigation proposes a context sensitive analytic model based on cognitive linguistics that tries to preserve the hermeneutic difference to Frauenlob’s Marienleich. This cognitive perspective, which is here applied to Frauenlob’s work for the first time, enables a more precise description and explanation of how the metaphorical meaning is constructed than was hitherto possible. The result shows that, whereas Frauenlob’s poetry may not be as modern as is sometimes believed, the metaphors in his Marienleich are much more than an artistic show-off; rather, they represent an efficient means of actualising a complex religious meaning.

  • The effects of visual realism, spatial abilities, and competition on performance in map-based route learning in men
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Cartography and Geographic Information Science. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1523-0406 .- 1545-0465. ; 45:4, s. 339-353
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on how visual realism might influence map-based route learning performance in a controlled laboratory experiment with 104 male participants in a competitive context. Using animations of a dot moving through routes of interest, we find that participants recall the routes more accurately with abstract road maps than with more realistic satellite maps. We also find that, irrespective of visual realism, participants with higher spatial abilities (high-spatial participants) are more accurate in memorizing map-based routes than participants with lower spatial abilities (low-spatial participants). On the other hand, added visual realism limits high-spatial participants in their route recall speed, while it seems not to influence the recall speed of low-spatial participants. Competition affects participants’ overall confidence positively, but does not affect their route recall performance neither in terms of accuracy nor speed. With this study, we provide further empirical evidence demonstrating that it is important to choose the appropriate map type considering task characteristics and spatial abilities. While satellite maps might be perceived as more fun to use, or visually more attractive than road maps, they also require more cognitive resources for many map-based tasks, which is true even for high-spatial users.

  • Baseline and 1-Year Follow-Up Data of Patients with End-Stage Hallux Rigidus Treated with an Arthrodesis Reported to Swefoot
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Medical Research Archives. - 2375-1916. ; 11:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Hallux rigidus (HR) affects the first metatarsophalangeal joint and is the most common osteoarthritic condition in the foot. The most used surgical treatment for severe cases of HR is an arthrodesis. The aim of this study is to describe patient characteristics, surgical treatment and the patient-reported outcomes for patients treated with arthrodesis for HR using data from Swefoot, the Swedish quality register for foot and ankle surgery. Methods: From Swefoot we extracted data on patients who underwent surgery for HR between January 2014 and December 2019. We included 419 patients with end-stage HR, who had not previously been treated surgically for HR on the same side. The outcome was measured with the Self-reported Foot and Ankle Score (SEFAS) (summary score 0-48) and EuroQol 5 Dimensions (EQ5D) (index 0-1) together with questions regarding appearance, shoe wear and satisfaction. We extracted surgical and patient-reported data preoperatively and 1 year postoperatively. Results: Our patient-population is predominantly female, around 61 years old, and slightly overweight. The arthrodeses are most often fixated with screws and most of the patients are allowed to bear weight immediately after surgery. The mean SEFAS score is 22 preoperatively and 38 postoperatively, the corresponding values for EQ5D index are 0.56 and 0.81 which means that the health-related quality of life (HrQoL) improves significantly after surgery. Conclusion: Patients with severe HR treated with an arthrodesis have reduced pain, improved function and HrQoL according to the patient-reported outcome measures SEFAS and EQ5D. The mean postoperative SEFAS value was close to the mean SEFAS value of the Swedish general population in the same age category. Fixation techniques and postoperative regimen differ among surgeons in the country. This is the first report from Swefoot regarding this patient population.

  • Age- and Gender-Specific Normative Values for the Self-Reported Foot and Ankle Score (SEFAS)
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Foot & Ankle International. - : SAGE Publications. - 1944-7876 .- 1071-1007. ; 39:11, s. 1328-1334
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: The Self-Reported Foot and Ankle Score (SEFAS) is a foot- and ankle-specific patient-reported outcome measurement (PROM) score that has been validated with good results for a variety of foot and ankle disorders. SEFAS is sensitive detecting improvement or deterioration after surgery. However, normative values, required to put a specific patient's summary score into perspective, are lacking.METHODS: In this report, we included 396 population-based men and 383 women (43% of the invited individuals), age 20-89 years, who had completed the SEFAS questionnaire and questions regarding anthropometrics and health. We used Mann-Whitney U test to test gender differences and Spearman correlation coefficients to determine any association between SEFAS score and age. We present gender-specific median SEFAS scores with range and 5th to 95th percentiles and mean with standard deviation.RESULTS: The SEFAS normative values were median 48 in men (range 11-48), 5th to 95th percentiles 31 to 48 and mean 45 ± 6, and in women, median 47 (range 6-48), 5th to 95th percentiles 23 to 48 and mean 43 ± 8 (gender comparison P < .001). SEFAS normative values correlated inversely with age (r = -0.12, P < .001).CONCLUSION: In the general population, older age was associated with lower SEFAS value, and men had higher values than women. The population-based normative SEFAS values provided in this study can facilitate quantification of disability related to foot and ankle with and without surgery in the foot and ankle.LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level II, prospective comparative study.

  • Comparison of the Self-Reported Foot and Ankle Score (SEFAS) and the American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society Score (AOFAS)
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Foot & ankle international. - Thousand Oaks, CA : SAGE Publications (UK and US): 12 month Embargo. - 1071-1007 .- 1944-7876. ; 35:10, s. 1031-1036
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: The Self-reported Foot and Ankle Score (SEFAS) is a patient-reported outcome measure, while the American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society Score (AOFAS) is a clinician-based score, both used for evaluation of foot and ankle disorders. The purpose of this study was to compare the psychometric properties of these 2 scoring systems. Methods: A total of 95 patients with great toe disorders and 111 patients with ankle or hindfoot disorders completed the 2 scores before and after surgery. We evaluated time to complete the scores in seconds, correlations between scores with Spearmans correlation coefficient (r(s)), floor and ceiling effects by proportion of individuals who reached the minimum or maximum values, test-retest reliability and interobserver reliability by intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), internal consistency by Cronbachs coefficient alpha (CA), and responsiveness by effect size (ES). Data are provided as correlation coefficients, means, and standard deviations. Results: SEFAS was completed 3 times faster than AOFAS. The scores correlated with an r(s) of .49 for great toe disorders and .67 for ankle/hindfoot disorders (both P less than .001). None of the scores had any floor or ceiling effect. SEFAS test-retest ICC values measured 1 week apart were .89 for great toe and .92 for ankle/hindfoot disorders, while the corresponding ICC values for AOFAS were .57 and .75. AOFAS interobserver reliability ICC values were .70 for great toe and .81 for ankle/hindfoot disorders. SEFAS CA values were .85 for great toe and .86 for ankle/hindfoot disorders, while the corresponding CA values for AOFAS were .15 and .42. SEFAS ES values were 1.15 for great toe and 1.39 for ankle/hindfoot disorders, while the corresponding ES values for AOFAS were 1.05 and 1.73. Conclusion: As SEFAS showed similar or better outcome in our tests and was completed 3 times faster than AOFAS, we recommend SEFAS for evaluation of patients with foot and ankle disorders.

  • Serum Levels of Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers in Girls with Premature Thelarche
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Hormone research in paediatrics. - : S. Karger AG. - 1663-2826 .- 1663-2818. ; 86:4, s. 233-239
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • <b><i>Background/Aims:</i></b> Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are widely used as flame retardants and have shown endocrine disruption properties in experimental studies. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between the exposure to PBDEs and alterations of puberty in girls referred for idiopathic central precocious puberty (ICPP) and premature thelarche (PT). <b><i>Methods:</i></b> A case-control study was conducted in 124 girls: 37 girls with ICPP (mean age 7.4 ± 0.9 years), 56 with PT (mean age 5.7 ± 2.1 years) and 31 controls (mean age 5.4 ± 1.9 years). PBDE serum concentrations, hormone levels and anthropometry were assessed. PBDE concentrations were corrected for total serum lipid content. Individual exposure to PBDEs was evaluated through ad hoc questionnaires. <b><i>Results:</i></b> PBDE serum concentrations corrected for total lipid content were significantly higher in girls with PT (mean 1.49 ± 0.63 log ng/g) than in controls (mean 1.23 ± 0.54 log ng/g; p < 0.05). PT girls showed higher levels of PBDE than ICPP girls (1.49 ± 0.63 vs. 1.37 ± 0.49 log ng/g), though this was not significant. An analysis of the questionnaires revealed no significant differences in exposure between the three groups. <b><i>Conclusion: </i></b>Our findings suggest that higher concentrations of serum PBDEs are associated with PT in girls.

  • Classifying European Court of Human Rights Cases Using Transformer-Based Techniques
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: IEEE Access. - : IEEE. - 2169-3536. ; 11, s. 55664-55676
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the field of text classification, researchers have repeatedly shown the value of transformer-based models such as Bidirectional Encoder Representation from Transformers (BERT) and its variants. Nonetheless, these models are expensive in terms of memory and computational power but have not been utilized to classify long documents of several domains. In addition, transformer models are also often pre-trained on generalized languages, making them less effective in language-specific domains, such as legal documents. In the natural language processing (NLP) domain, there is a growing interest in creating newer models that can handle more complex input sequences and domain-specific languages. Keeping the power of NLP in mind, this study proposes a legal documentation classifier that classifies the legal document by using the sliding window approach to increase the maximum sequence length of the model. We used the ECHR (European Court of Human Rights) publicly available dataset which to a large extent is imbalanced. Therefore, to balance the dataset we have scrapped the case articles from the web and extracted the data. Then, we employed conventional machine learning techniques such as SVM, DT, NB, AdaBoost, and transformer-based neural networks models including BERT, Legal-BERT, RoBERTa, BigBird, ELECTRA, and XLNet for the classification task. The experimental findings show that RoBERTa outperformed all the mentioned BERT versions by obtaining precision, recall, and F1-score of 89.1%, 86.2%, and 86.7%, respectively. While from conventional machine learning techniques, AdaBoost outclasses SVM, DT, and NB by achieving scores of 81.9%, 81.5%, and 81.7% for precision, recall, and F1-score, respectively.

  • 2011
  • Ingår i: 7th IEEE International Conference on e-Science. - : IEEE. - 9781457721632 ; , s. 287-294
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Many scientific experiments produce an enormous amount of data that needs to be explored. Scientific workflows and tools for managing workflows have been designed to streamline the computational processes that manipulate this data, from acquisition to analysis. However, the fact that each system has its own workflow format has greatly hampered efficient sharing and re-use. To address this problem, we propose a general model for workflows, based on OPM, which combines features from popular scientific workflow systems. We use this model to build infrastructure that supports system-agnostic workflow repositories. We describe the implementation of the infrastructure and present an experimental evaluation of its performance. We show that the proposed model and its implementation provide efficient support for queries over large repositories.

    • Perturbations of electric and magnetic fields with periods of the order of 1 second are commonly observed in the auroral region by satellites and sounding rockets. The events are often accompanied by magnetic field aligned electron precipitation. The observations have been interpreted as inertial Alfvén mode waves. A variety of theories, some of which are surveyed here, have been suggested to describe such events. Recent observations of Alfvénic activity by sounding rockets and satellites are presented and their implications for the theoretical models are discussed.

  • Bliss and Loewe interaction analyses of clinically relevant drug combinations in human colon cancer cell lines reveal complex patterns of synergy and antagonism
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Oncotarget. - : IMPACT JOURNALS LLC. - 1949-2553. ; 8:61, s. 103952-103967
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We analyzed survival effects for 15 different pairs of clinically relevant anticancer drugs in three iso-genic pairs of human colorectal cancer carcinoma cell lines, by applying for the first time our novel software (R package) called COMBIA. In our experiments iso-genic pairs of cell lines were used, differing only with respect to a single clinically important KRAS or BRAF mutation. Frequently, concentration dependent but mutation independent joint Bliss and Loewe synergy/antagonism was found statistically significant. Four combinations were found synergistic/antagonistic specifically to the parental (harboring KRAS or BRAF mutation) cell line of the corresponding iso-genic cell lines pair. COMBIA offers considerable improvements over established software for synergy analysis such as MacSynergy (TM) II as it includes both Bliss (independence) and Loewe (additivity) analyses, together with a tailored non-parametric statistical analysis employing heteroscedasticity, controlled resampling, and global (omnibus) testing. In many cases Loewe analyses found significant synergistic as well as antagonistic effects in a cell line at different concentrations of a tested drug combination. By contrast, Bliss analysis found only one type of significant effect per cell line. In conclusion, the integrated Bliss and Loewe interaction analysis based on non-parametric statistics may provide more robust interaction analyses and reveal complex patterns of synergy and antagonism.

    • We have combined 2-D SOS-PAGE with liquid chromatography-high resolving mass spectrometry (LC-MS) to explore the proteome of the adenovirus type 2 (Ad2) at the level of post translational modifications (PTMs). The experimental design included in-solution digestion, followed by titanium dioxide enrichment, as well as in-gel digestion of polypeptides after separation of Ad2 capsid proteins by 1-D and 2-D SOS-PAGE. All samples were analyzed using LC-MS with subsequent manual verification of PTM positions. The results revealed new phosphorylation sites that can explain the observed trains of protein spots observed for the pIII, pIIIa and ply proteins. The pin protein was found to be the most highly modified protein with now 18 verified sites of phosphorylation, three sites of nitrated tyrosine and one sulfated tyrosine. Nitrated tyrosines were also identified in pII. Lysine acetylations were detected in pII and pVI. The findings make the Ad2 virion much more complex than hitherto believed.

  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Medicine today uses a wide range of biomaterials, most of which make contact with blood permanently or transiently upon implantation. Contact between blood and nonbiological materials or cells or tissue of nonhematologic origin initiates activation of the cascade systems (complement, contact activation/coagulation) of the blood, which induces platelet and leukocyte activation.Although substantial progress regarding biocompatibility has been made, many materials and medical treatment procedures are still associated with severe side effects. Therefore, there is a great need for adequate models and guidelines for evaluating the blood compatibility of biomaterials. Due to the substantial amount of cross talk between the different cascade systems and cell populations in the blood, it is advisable to use an intact system for evaluation. Here, we describe three such in vitro models for the evaluation of the biocompatibility of materials and therapeutic cells and tissues. The use of different anticoagulants and specific inhibitors in order to be able to dissect interactions between the different cascade systems and cells of the blood is discussed. In addition, we describe two clinically relevant medical treatment modalities, the integration of titanium implants and transplantation of islets of Langerhans to patients with type 1 diabetes, whose mechanisms of action we have addressed using these in vitro models.

  • Fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase from rat liver. A comparison of the kinetics of the unphosphorylated enzyme and the enzyme phosphorylated by cyclic AMP-dependent protein kinase.
  • 1985
  • Ingår i: Journal of Biological Chemistry. - 0021-9258 .- 1083-351X. ; 260, s. 14173-14179
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A purification procedure for rat hepatic fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase, described earlier, has been improved, resulting in an enzyme preparation with a neutral pH optimum and with both phosphorylatable serine residues present. The subunit Mr was 40,000. Phosphorylation in vitro with cyclic AMP-dependent protein kinase resulted in the incorporation of 1.4 mol of phosphate/mol of subunit and led to an almost 2-fold decrease in apparent Km for fructose-1,6-bisphosphate. In contrast to yeast fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase, fructose-2,6-bisphosphate had no effect on the rate of phosphorylation or dephosphorylation of the intact enzyme. The effects of the composition of the assay medium, with regard to buffering substance and Mg2+ concentration, on the apparent Km values of phosphorylated and unphosphorylated enzyme were investigated. The kinetics of phosphorylated and unphosphorylated fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase were studied with special reference to the inhibitory effects of adenine nucleotides and fructose-2,6-bisphosphate. Unphosphorylated fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase was more susceptible to inhibition by both AMP and fructose 2,6-bisphosphate than phosphorylated enzyme, at high and low substrate concentrations. Both ATP and ADP had a similar effect on the two enzyme forms, ADP being the more potent inhibitor. Finally, the combined effect of several inhibitors at physiological concentrations was studied. Under conditions resembling the gluconeogenic state, phosphorylated fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase was found to have twice the activity of the unphosphorylated enzyme.

  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • When an artificial biomaterial (e.g., a stent or implantable pump) is exposed to blood, plasma proteins immediately adhere to the surface, creating a new interface between the biomaterial and the blood. The recognition proteins within the complement and contact activation/coagulation cascade systems of the blood will be bound to, or inserted into, this protein film and generate different mediators that will activate polymorphonuclear leukocytes and monocytes, as well as platelets. Under clinical conditions, the ultimate outcome of these processes may be thrombotic and inflammatory reactions, and consequently the composition and conformation of the proteins in the initial layer formed on the surface will to a large extent determine the outcome of a treatment involving the biomaterial, affecting both the functionality of the material and the patient's life quality. This review presents models of biomaterial-induced activation processes and describes various strategies to attenuate potential adverse reactions by conjugating bioactive molecules to surfaces or by introducing nanostructures.

  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Complement systemaberrations have been identified as pathophysiological mechanisms in a number of diseases and pathological conditions either directly or indirectly. Examples of such conditions include infections, inflammation, autoimmune disease, as well as allogeneic and xenogenic transplantation. Both prospective and retrospective studies have demonstrated significant complement-related differences between patient groups and controls. However, due to the low degree of specificity and sensitivity of some of the assays used, it is not always possible to make predictions regarding the complement status of individual patients. Today, there are three main indications for determination of a patient's complement status: (1) complement deficiencies (acquired or inherited); (2) disorders with aberrant complement activation; and (3) C1 inhibitor deficiencies (acquired or inherited). An additional indication is to monitor patients on complement-regulating drugs, an indication which may be expected to increase in the near future since there is now a number of such drugs either under development, already in clinical trials or in clinical use. Available techniques to study complement include quantification of: (1) individual components; (2) activation products, (3) function, and (4) autoantibodies to complement proteins. In this review, we summarize the appropriate indications, techniques, and interpretations of basic serological complement analyses, exemplified by a number of clinical disorders.

  • Meso-scale modelling of composites and semi-crystalline polymers
  • 2009
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis covers the first few steps of a multi-scale computer simulation strategy for predicting physical properties of complex polymers like composites and semi-crystalline polymers. Meso-scale simulations of crystallization and solvent diffusion in polyethylene as well as simulations examining the geometrical impact on the effective permittivity of composites have been performed. These meso-scale models will in the near future be coupled to molecular dynamics models for increased realism and accuracy.   The first paper was focused on solvent diffusion in spherulitic semi-crystalline polyethylene. Geometrical models of polyethylene spherulites were constructed and Monte-Carlo random walker simulations were used to estimate the geometrical impedance factor as function of volume crystallinity, mean free path and other geometry properties. Novel numerical off-lattice algorithms made it possible to increase the maximum volume crystallinity from 40 to 55%, to decrease the computation time a factor 100 and to use shorter and more realistic diffusion jump-lengths. The simulation results were in good agreement with experimental results and new analytical formulas were found that could be neatly fitted to both simulation data and experimental data. It was noticed that the geometrical impedance factor was proportional to the polymers mean free path length rather than its length/width aspect ratio and that the traditional Fricke formula for oblate spheroids was not able to correctly predict the diffusion behaviour in complex geometries like spherulites at medium-high volume crystal fractions.    The second paper was focused on the electrostatics of composites. Geometrical models of layered composites were first obtained and the finite element method was then used to calculate the effective composite permittivity as function of particle content, particle shape, degree of mixing and other geometrical issues. Analytical lamellae formulas for 2- and 3-phase composites were formulated with clearly better correlation to corresponding finite element data than all other previously known analytical formulas. The analytical 3-phase formula was successfully compared with experimental data for mica/polyimide and it was noted that the influence of water and air was significant.

    • Genomic data can provide novel insights into the natural history of oceanic species. These data can inform the management of vulnerable and slow-maturing species by estimating population structure, rates of migration, and the distribution of genetic diversity. In this study we focus on two protected elasmobranch species, the Winter Skate, Leucoraja ocellata, and the Little Skate, L. erinacea. We use genome-wide SNPs to estimate population structure, and quantify migration and genetic diversity among both species from four sampling localities across the Atlantic coast of North America. We find that species of Leucoraja are generally isolated by distance, although we infer some fine-scale population structure. Specifically, estimates of effective migration infer fine-scale population structure in L. ocellata between the northern sites of Georges Bank and the Mid-Atlantic sampling sites, whereas L. erinacea shows no evidence of population genetic structure in any analyses. We also found that genetic diversity is concentrated in the central sites of Georges Bank and the Mid-Atlantic Bight for L. ocellata, but is reduced at these two sites in L. erinacea, suggesting opposite distributions of genetic diversity between species. Thus, genomic data suggest that while species of Leucoraja lack discrete population structure, they likely employ only mid-range dispersal. These findings correspond to ecological studies that have found eco physiological differences between embryonic and juvenile Leucoraja from different localities. Taken together, small-bodied skate research emphasizes the importance of local adaptive plasticity for marine species, even without population genetic structure. Conservation strategies should focus on managing the portions of the Atlantic coast considered most vital to reproduction of Leucoraja, but should not recognize multiple populations across their range.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this article is to contribute to understanding the relationship between teaching and learning algebra at school in order to identify how schools can be supported to improve students’ learning outcomes. The students’ tests and examinations of their mathematical work and the teachers’ lessons plan and reports on the lessons’ instructions were the base data for this article. The analysis indicated that, if the teachers base their instructions on the critical aspects identified in students’ learning and open up patterns of variation in these aspects, they seem to facilitate students’ learning. The findings suggest that helping teachers develop an understanding of the students’ critical aspects can be a productive basis for helping them to make fundamental changes to their instructions and to improve their mathematical communication in the classroom.

  • Vilka är elevernas svårigheter i algebra? : en undersökning av hur gymnasieelever under sitt andra år utvecklar sin algebraiska förståelse
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Tsunami. - 1651-5803. ; :3
