  • Determination of the strong coupling constant from the inclusive jet cross section in pp collisions at s=1.96 TeV
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: PHYS REV D. - 1550-7998 .- 1550-2368. ; 80, s. 111107-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We determine the strong coupling constant alpha(s) and its energy dependence from the p(T) dependence of the inclusive jet cross section in pp collisions at s=1.96 TeV. The strong coupling constant is determined over the transverse momentum range 50 < p(T)< 145 GeV. Using perturbative QCD calculations to order O(alpha(3)(s)) combined with O(alpha(4)(s)) contributions from threshold corrections, we obtain alpha(s)(M-Z)=0.1161(-0.0048)(+0.0041). This is the most precise result obtained at a hadron-hadron collider.

  • Iris Recognition Based on SIFT Features
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: 2009 First IEEE International Conference on Biometrics, Identity and Securit. - 9781424452767 ; , s. 1-8
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Biometric methods based on iris images are believed to allow very high accuracy, and there has been an explosion of interest in iris biometrics in recent years. In this paper, we use the Scale Invariant Feature Transformation (SIFT) for recognition using iris images. Contrarily to traditional iris recognition systems, the SIFT approach does not rely on the transformation of the iris pattern to polar coordinates or on highly accurate segmentation, allowing less constrained image acquisition conditions. We extract characteristic SIFT feature points in scale space and perform matching based on the texture information around the feature points using the SIFT operator. Experiments are done using the BioSec multimodal database, which includes 3,200 iris images from 200 individuals acquired in two different sessions. We contribute with the analysis of the influence of different SIFT parameters on the recognition performance. We also show the complementarity between the SIFT approach and a popular matching approach based on transformation to polar coordinates and Log-Gabor wavelets. The combination of the two approaches achieves significantly better performance than either of the individual schemes, with a performance improvement of 24% in the Equal Error Rate.

  • Bragg difraction of optical guided waves by spin-dipole waves in double layer ferromagnetic wave guides
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Revista mexicana de física. - 0035-001X. ; 54:5, s. 376-381
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The peculiarities of the Bragg diffraction of optical guided waves (OGWs) by spin-dipole waves (SDWs) in a new ferrite heterostructure, based on Bi3Fe5O12(BIG) thin film deposited on a standard YIG/GGG (a Yttrium Iron Garnet thin film over a Galium Gadolinum Garnet substrate) sample, is presented. It is shown that the efficiency of waveguide magnetooptic interaction between OGWs and SDWs in BIG/YIG/GGG can be 4-14 times larger than in the standard YIG/GGG waveguide, even in the case when the interacting waves are localized in YIG waveguide layer.

  • Complementary and alternative medicine use in patients with gynecological cancers in Europe
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Gynecological Cancer. - : Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. - 1048-891X .- 1525-1438. ; 16:Suppl. 1, s. 219-224
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of the present study was to assess the use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) specifically in women with gynecological cancer. The design of the study was of a descriptive cross-sectional survey using a 27-item questionnaire. The study was conducted in 11 countries in Europe as part of a larger project. Data were available from 72 gynecological cancer patients. Among the participants, 40.3% used CAM after the diagnosis with cancer. The most popular CAM modalities used were herbal medicine (34.5%), relaxation techniques (21.4%), and vitamins/minerals (20.7%). A very high level of satisfaction with CAM use was reported. Patients used CAM to increase the body's ability to fight the cancer or to improve physical and emotional well-being. The main sources of information about CAM were informal (friends/ family or the media). It is important to discuss CAM use with gynecological cancer patients, as they frequently use it and such use may have implications for clinical practice.

  • Complementary and alternative medicine use in patients with head and neck cancers in Europe
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Cancer Care. - : Blackwell Publishing. - 0961-5423 .- 1365-2354. ; 15:1, s. 19-24
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of the present study was to examine the patterns of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) use in a sample of head and neck cancer patients, forming part of a larger study. A cross-sectional survey design was used collecting data through a descriptive 27-item questionnaire in nine countries in Europe. The participants were 75 patients with head and neck cancers. The prevalence rate of CAM use was 22.7%. The most common therapies used were herbal medicine (47%), medicinal teas (23.5%), use of vitamins/minerals (11.8%) and visualization (11.8%). Use of CAM dramatically increased after the diagnosis with cancer (i.e. eightfold increase in the use of herbs). A profile of CAM users was not evident in this sample. Patients used CAM for a variety of reasons together, with counteracting the ill effects from cancer and its treatment being the most common one. Information about CAM was obtained mostly from friends and family. As one in five head and neck cancer patients use CAM it is important that clinicians explore practices with their patients, improve communication about CAM with them and assist those who want to use CAM in using appropriate and safe therapies.

  • Use of complementary and alternative medicine in cancer patients : a European survey
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Annals of Oncology. - : Oxford University Press. - 0923-7534 .- 1569-8041. ; 16:4, s. 655-663
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: The aim of this study was to explore the use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) in cancer patients across a number of European countries. Methods: A descriptive survey design was developed. Fourteen countries participated in the study and data was collected through a descriptive questionnaire from 956 patients. Results: Data suggest that CAM is popular among cancer patients with 35.9% using some form of CAM (range among countries 14.8% to 73.1%). A heterogeneous group of 58 therapies were identified as being used. Herbal medicines and remedies were the most commonly used CAM therapies, together with homeopathy, vitamins/minerals, medicinal teas, spiritual therapies and relaxation techniques. Herbal medicine use tripled from use before diagnosis to use since diagnosis with cancer. Multivariate analysis suggested that the profile of the CAM user was that of younger people, female and with higher educational level. The source of information was mainly from friends/family and the media, while physicians and nurses played a small part in providing CAM-related information. The majority used CAM to increase the body's ability to fight cancer or improve physical and emotional well-being, and many seemed to have benefited from using CAM (even though the benefits were not necessarily related to the initial reason for using CAM). Some 4.4% of patients, however, reported side-effects, mostly transient. Conclusions: It is imperative that health professionals explore the use of CAM with their cancer patients, educate them about potentially beneficial therapies in light of the limited available evidence of effectiveness, and work towards an integrated model of health-care provision.

  • Identification of Sperm Subpopulations in Stallion Ejaculates: Changes after Cryopreservation and Comparison with Traditional Statistics
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Reproduction in domestic animals. - : Wiley-Blackwell. - 0936-6768 .- 1439-0531. ; 44:3, s. 419-423
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In an attempt to improve the information obtained after computer-assisted sperm analysis (CASA), data from five stallions (three ejaculates from each) were analysed before (fresh, extended semen) and after cryopreservation using traditional statistics as well as a cluster analysis. The data matrix consisted of 13 987 observations of individual spermatozoa for fresh, extended semen, and 8305 for frozen-thawed samples. As expected, freezing and thawing resulted in a marked decrease of CASA-derived variables of sperm kinematics. All sperm velocities were significantly lower in frozen-thawed samples than in samples before cooling. Using sperm velocities, six sperm subpopulations were identified in fresh semen (S1-S6). As such, subpopulations S1 and S2 were characterized by low sperm velocities, subpopulations S3 and S4 corresponded to spermatozoa depicting medium speed values, and finally, subpopulations S5 and S6 were those depicting the highest velocities. After freezing and thawing, four sperm subpopulations were identified, listed as nr FT1 to FT4. While subpopulations FT1-FT3 were characterized by low sperm velocities, and thus corresponded speed-wise to those listed as S1-S4 for fresh, extended semen, the one called number FT4 in frozen semen was characterized by high velocities, of the same range as that of the subpopulations S5 and S6 for fresh spermatozoa. The sperm subpopulation structure varied among stallions, but the cluster analysis hereby assayed was able to provide valuable information about the freezability of the samples that the customary statistics did not reveal.

  • Direct attacks using fake images in iris verification
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Biometrics and Identity Management. - Berlin : Springer Berlin/Heidelberg. - 9783540899907 ; , s. 181-190
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this contribution, the vulnerabilities of iris-based recognition systems to direct attacks are studied. A database of fake iris images has been created from real iris of the BioSec baseline database. Iris images are printed using a commercial printer and then, presented at the iris sensor. We use for our experiments a publicly available iris recognition system, which some modifications to improve the iris segmentation step. Based on results achieved on different operational scenarios, we show that the system is vulnerable to direct attacks, pointing out the importance of having countermeasures against this type of fraudulent actions. © 2008 Springer Berlin Heidelberg.
