  • THE NORTHWEST FRONTIER : SPECTROSCOPY OF N similar to Z NUCLEI BELOW MASS 100
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Acta Physica Polonica B. - 0587-4254 .- 1509-5770. ; 40:3, s. 611-620
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The spectroscopy and structure of excited states of N similar to Z nuclei in the mass 70-100 region has been investigated using two techniques. In the A similar to 70-80 region fusion evaporation reactions coupled with the recoil-beta-tagging method have been employed at Jyvaskyla to study low-lying states in odd-odd N = Z nuclei. Results from these and other data for known odd-odd nuclei above mass 60 will be discussed. In the heavier mass 90 region a fragmentation experiment has been performed using the RIS-ING/FRS setup at GSI. This experiment was primarily aimed at searching for spin gap isomers in nuclei around A similar to 96. The objectives of the latter experiment will be discussed.

  • gamma-Ray Spectroscopy at the Limits : First Observation of Rotational Bands in Lr-255
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 102:21, s. 212501-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The rotational band structure of Lr-255 has been investigated using advanced in-beam gamma-ray spectroscopic techniques. To date, Lr-255 is the heaviest nucleus to be studied in this manner. One rotational band has been unambiguously observed and strong evidence for a second rotational structure was found. The structures are tentatively assigned to be based on the 1/2(-)[521] and 7/2(-)[514] Nilsson states, consistent with assignments from recently obtained alpha decay data. The experimental rotational band dynamic moment of inertia is used to test self-consistent mean-field calculations using the Skyrme SLy4 interaction and a density-dependent pairing force.

    • Two complementary experimental programs have taken place to investigate the origin and evolution of shape coexistence in the light mercury region. Recoil Distance Doppler-shift measurements were performed at the University of Jyväskylä utilizing the Köln plunger device in conjunction with the JUROGAM + RITU + GREAT setup. In addition, Coulomb excitation measurements of 184,186,188Hg were performed at REX-ISOLDE using the MINIBALL Ge-detector array. The results of the lifetime measurements of the yrast states up to Iπ = 10+ in 182Hg are reported. Preliminary analysis of the Coulomb excitation data is also discussed.

  • Collectivity and configuration mixing in Pb186,188 and Po194
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 97:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Lifetimes of prolate intruder states in Pb186 and oblate intruder states in Po194 have been determined by employing, for the first time, the recoil-decay tagging technique in recoil distance Doppler-shift lifetime measurements. In addition, lifetime measurements of prolate states in Pb188 up to the 8+ state were carried out using the recoil-gating method. The B(E2) values have been deduced from which deformation parameters |β2|=0.29(5) and |β2|=0.17(3) for the prolate and the oblate bands, respectively, have been extracted. The results also shed new light on the mixing between different shapes.

  • Isomer spectroscopy in No-254
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Physica Scripta. - 0031-8949 .- 1402-4896. ; T125, s. 73-77
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Isomeric states in No-254 were investigated using a calorimetric method. Two different isomers were found with half-lives of T-1/2 = 266 +/- 2 ms and T-1/2 = 184 +/- 3 mu s, respectively. The dominant decay path of the 184 mu s isomer proceeds via states feeding the longer-lived 266 ms isomer. The 266 ms isomer in turn decays via a two-quasi-particle K = 3 band to the ground-state band. The full decay path was observed with the GREAT spectrometer located at the focal plane of the gas-filled separator RITU at the Accelerator Laboratory in Jyvskyl. This work sheds light on the two-quasi-particle structure in this transfermium nucleus.

    • Ultra-fast time-delayed techniques have been recently applied in a number of studies where exotic nuclei were identified using advanced selection techniques. These include large Compton-suppressed Ge arrays, in-flight separators or recoil separators. Some of the new results are discussed in this presentation. Besides the results for Mg-32 and Pd-96, they include the first determination of the half-life of the 8(+) state in Ge-80, T-1/2 = 2.95(6) ns, and significantly more precise results for Mn-51 (3680 keV level) and V-48 (421 keV level), T-1/2 = 1760(40) ps and T-1/2.

  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Proton Emitting Nuclei and Related Topics. - : American Institute of Physics (AIP). - 9780735404755 ; , s. 28-33
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The observation of the new nuclide 159Re provides important insights into the evolution of single-particle structure in heavy nuclei beyond the proton drip line. The nuclide 159Re was synthesised in the reaction 106Cd(58Ni, p4n) and identified via its proton radioactivity using the RITU gas-filled separator and the GREAT focal-plane spectrometer. Comparisons of the measured proton energy (Ep = 1805±20 keV) and decay half-life (t1/2 = 21±4 μs) with values calculated using the WKB method indicate that the proton is emitted from an h11/2 state. The implications of these results for future experimental investigations into even more proton unbound Re isotopes using in-flight separation techniques are considered.

    • The observation of the new nuclide Re-159(75)84 provides important insights into the evolution of single-particle structure and the mass surface in heavy nuclei beyond the proton drip line. This nuclide, 26 neutrons away from the nearest stable rhenium isotope, was synthesised in the reaction Cd-106(Ni-58, p4n) and identified via its proton radioactivity using the RITU gas-filled separator and the GREAT focal-plane spectrometer. Comparisons of the measured proton energy (E-p = 1805 +/- 20 keV) and decay half-life (t(1/2) = 21 +/- 4 mu s) with values calculated using the WKB method indicate that the proton is emitted from an h(11/2) state. The implications of these results for future experimental investigations into even more proton unbound nuclei using in-flight separation techniques are considered.

  • Yrast states and band crossings in the neutron-deficient platinum isotopes Pt169-173
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 74:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The yrast states in the light platinum isotopes Pt169-173 have been investigated in a recoil-decay tagging experiment using the JUROGAM gamma-ray spectrometer in conjunction with the RITU gas-filled recoil separator and the GREAT tagging spectrometer. Gamma-ray transitions have been established for the first time in the odd-N isotopes, Pt-169 and Pt-173, and the yrast sequences in Pt-170 and Pt-172 have been extended. We discuss the possibility that the weakly deformed yrast structures of Pt-170, Pt-172, and Pt-173 are crossed by a deformed intruder configuration at spin similar to 8h.

  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 74:2, s. 024316-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Excited states in Re-161 were populated using the Cd-106(Ni-58, p2n) reaction at a beam energy of 270 MeV, resulting in the first observation of gamma rays emitted from this nucleus. The reaction products were separated from scattered beam and fission fragments by the gas-filled recoil separator RITU, and were implanted in the double-sided silicon strip detectors of the GREAT spectrometer. Prompt gamma rays were detected by the JUROGAM Ge detector array and were assigned to Re-161 based on alpha- and proton-decay tagging of the implanted reaction products. The near-yrast high-spin level structure, which was delineated to spins around 39/2, is discussed in the context of the total Routhian surface formalism. The level scheme is interpreted in terms of the alignment of h(9/2)/f(7/2) neutrons at lower spins, followed by excitations involving the pi h(11/2) subshell at higher spins.

  • alpha decay of Re-159 and proton emission from Ta-155
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 75:6, s. 061302-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The alpha decay of Re-159 has been observed for the first time in reactions of 300 MeV Ni-58 ions with an isotopically enriched Cd-106 target. The Re-159 ions were separated in-flight using the RITU separator and implanted into the GREAT spectrometer. The alpha decay emanates from the proton-emitting pi h(11/2) state in Re-159 with an energy of E-alpha=6776 +/- 26 keV and a branching ratio of 7.5 +/- 3.5%. This alpha decay populates a state in the closed neutron shell nucleus Ta-155, which decays by emitting 1444 +/- 15 keV protons with a half-life of 2.9(-1.1)(+1.5) ms. These values are consistent with the emission of the proton from a pi h(11/2) orbital. These results fit in with the systematics of proton and alpha-particle separation energies in the region, but disagree with the previously reported decay properties of Ta-155.

    • Single-particle energies have been investigated in the closed neutron shell proton emitter 155Ta. The 155Ta nuclei were populated through the α decay of 159Re, which has been observed for the first time. The 159Re nuclei were produced in reactions of 300 MeV 58Ni ions with an isotopically enriched 106Cd target, separated in-flight using the RITU separator and implanted into the GREAT spectrometer. The 159Re α decay emanates from the proton-emitting πh11/2 state and populates a state in 155Ta which decays by the emission of a proton from a πh 11/2 orbital. The results fit in with the systematics of proton and α-particle separation energies in the region, but disagree with the previously reported decay properties of 155Ta.

  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 75:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The technique of recoil beta tagging has been developed which allows prompt gamma decays in nuclei from excited states to be correlated with electrons from their subsequent short-lived beta decay. This technique is ideal for studying nuclei very far from stability and improves in sensitivity for very short-lived decays and for high decay Q-values. The method has allowed excited states in Y-78 to be observed for the first time, as well as an extension in the knowledge of T=1 states in Rb-74. From this new information it has been possible to compare Coulomb energy differences (CED) between T=1 states in Br-70/Se-70, Rb-74/Kr-74, and Y-78/Sr-78. The A=70 CED exhibit an anomalous behavior which is inconsistent with all other known CED. This behavior may be accounted for qualitatively in terms of small variations in the Coulomb energy arising from shape changes.

It displays similar behaviour to its isotones Hg-186 and Pb-188 above the 4(+) level, thus confirming its prolate nature. In Po-197 the band built upon the 13/2(+) isomer has been extended up to a spin and parity of 33/2(+), while the non-yrast band has been observed for the first time. The behaviour of Po-197 is found to be similar to that of the nearby even-mass isotopes, which is consistent with the model in which the i(13/2) neutron is weakly coupled to the states in the even-even core.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The new neutron-deficient isotopes Rn-193,Rn-194 have been identified in the complete fusion reaction Cr-52+Sm-144 -> Rn-196(*) at the velocity filter SHIP. The alpha-decay energy and half-life value of Rn-194 were determined to be E-alpha=7700(10) keV and T-1/2=0.78(16) ms, respectively. For Rn-193 the half-life of T-1/2=1.15(27) ms and two alpha lines at E-alpha 1=7685(15) keV, I-alpha 1=74(20)% and E-alpha 2=7875(20) keV, I-alpha 2=26(12)% were found. The decay pattern of Rn-193, which is substantially different from that of the heavier odd-A Rn isotopes, provides first experimental evidence for the long-predicted deformation in the very neutron-deficient Rn nuclei.

  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Surface Science. - : Elsevier BV. - 0039-6028. ; 601, s. 3395-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The bismuth-stabilized (2 x 4)-reconstructed InP(100) surface [Bi/InP(100)(2 x 4)] has been studied by synchrotron-radiation core-level photoelectron spectroscopy. The spectra are compared with previous core-level data obtained on a clean InP(100)(2 x 4) surface. The findings support that the P 2p surface-core-level shift (SCLS) of the clean InP(100)(2 x 4), which has higher kinetic energy than the bulk emission, arises from the third-layer P atoms and that the second P 2p SCLS, which has lower kinetic energy than the bulk, arises from the top-layer P atoms. Similar In 4d SCLSs are found on the clean and Bi-stabilized InP(100)(2 x 4) surfaces, indicating that these shifts contain contributions of the In atoms that lie in the second and/or fourth layers. In addition to this, the results improve our understanding of the atomic structure of the Bi/InP(100)(2 x 4) surface and lead to refined surface models which include Bi-Bi and Bi-P dimers. • Ingår i: Surface Science. - : Elsevier BV. - 0039-6028 .- 1879-2758. ; 603:16, s. 2664-2668
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Surface core-level shifts (SCLSs) of the (2 x 4)-reconstructed InP(100) surface with the established mixed In-P dimer structure have been investigated by first-principles calculations and photoelectron spectroscopy. Theoretical values were calculated using both the local density approximation (LDA) and the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) for the exchange-correlation energy functional. The obtained theoretical values are quite similar within both approximations. The found differences originate in the tiny structural differences. It is concluded that the expansion or contraction of the crystal lattice has smaller effect on the SCLSs than the geometrical details of the reconstruction, which suggests that the Madelung potential has the dominant effect on the SCLSs. The results support the presence of a P 2p peak at higher binding energy (BE) compared to bulk peak, as proposed with recent measurements [P. Laukkamen, J. Pakarinen, M. Ahola-Tuomi, M. Kuzmin, R. E. Perala, I. J. Vayrynen, A. Tukiainen, V. Rimpilainen, M. Pessa, M. Adell, J. Sadowski, Surf. Sci. 600 (2006) 3022], and reveal several hitherto not reported SCLSs. The calculated SCLSs reproduce the measured spectra within reasonable accuracy. Furthermore, the atomic origins of the InP(100)(2 x 4) SCLSs are solved. In particular, it is shown that the lowest SCLS of P 2p, of the InP(100)(2 x 4) arises from the topmost In-P dimers.

  • Ingår i: Pediatric surgery international (Print). - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0179-0358 .- 1437-9813. ; 23:12, s. 1167-1170
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Funnel anus (FA) is a rare and distinct type of anorectal malformation characterized by a skin-lined deep anal funnel, missing transitional epithelium and stenosis secondary to fibrotic internal sphincter. We aimed to characterize associated anomalies, surgical management and outcome of children with FA. The hospital records of 11 consecutive children (7 boys) treated for FA between 1992 and 2006 were screened. The collected data included the type of anorectal malformation, surgical management, associated anomalies, results of diagnostic investigations and outcome. Only one patient was free of any associated malformation. Six patients had a complete Currarino syndrome. Seven patients had a hemisacrum (scimitar) and tethered cord was present in two cases. Six patients underwent excision of a benign presacral teratoma. Anal stenosis associated with FA was managed by serial dilatations. Subsequent resection of the megarectosigmoid secondary to refractory constipation was performed on five occasions. Three patients underwent coloanal pull-through for Hirschsprung's disease (HD). The level of aganglionosis was at the rectosigmoid junction in two cases and low in the rectum in one. One additional patient had hypoganglionosis. Of the three patients with HD two also had Down's syndrome. After median follow-up of 6.5 (0.3-13.5) years four patients have normal bowel function and four suffer from soiling. Two patients with HD and Down's syndrome and one patient with an undefined syndrome are fecally incontinent. Associated anomalies are common and diverse in children with FA. Pelvic MRI, sacral radiography, evaluation of the urinary tract and rectal biopsies are recommended as routine investigations in cases of FA. Surgical care of these patients is demanding and should be confined to dedicated centers.
