  • Lymphocyte CC chemokine receptor 9 and epithelial thymus-expressed chemokine (TECK) expression distinguish the small intestinal immune compartment: Epithelial expression of tissue-specific chemokines as an organizing principle in regional immunity
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Journal of Experimental Medicine. - 1540-9538. ; 192:5, s. 761-768
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The immune system has evolved specialized cellular and molecular mechanisms for targeting and regulating immune responses at epithelial surfaces. Here we show that small intestinal intraepithelial lymphocytes and lamina propria lymphocytes migrate to thymus-expressed chemokine (TECK). This attraction is mediated by CC chemokine receptor (CCR)9, a chemoattractant receptor expressed at high levels by essentially all CD4(+) and CD8(+) T lymphocytes in the small intestine. Only a small subset of lymphocytes in the colon are CCR9(+), and lymphocytes from other tissues including tonsils, lung, inflamed liver, normal or inflamed skin, inflamed synovium and synovial fluid, breast milk, and seminal fluid are universally CCR9(-). TECK expression is also restricted to the small intestine: immunohistochemistry reveals that intense anti-TECK reactivity characterizes crypt epithelium in the jejunum and ileum, but not in other epithelia of the digestive tract (including stomach and colon), skin, lung, or salivary gland. These results imply a restricted role for lymphocyte CCR9 and its ligand TECK in the small intestine, and provide the first evidence for distinctive mechanisms of lymphocyte recruitment that may permit functional specialization of immune responses in different segments of the gastrointestinal tract. Selective expression of chemokines by differentiated epithelium may represent an important mechanism for targeting and specialization of immune responses.

  • An analysis of the Ethiopian Rift Valley GPS campaigns in 1994 and 1999
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Journal of Geodynamics. - 0264-3707 .- 1879-1670. ; 33:3, s. 333-343
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In cooperation with the Geophysical Observatory, Addis Ababa University, the Department of Geodesy and Photogrammetry of the Royal Institute of Technology carried out GPS measurements at three deformation networks in the Ethiopian Rift Valley in 1994 and 1999. For these campaigns the session-to-session repeatabilities were about 5 and 4 mm in the horizontal components and 50 and 10 mm in the vertical components using the IGS precise orbits, respectively. The results show, that the stations of the E3 network in the Rift Valley moved with a magnitude of 2.5 +/- 1.3 mm/a to the SE, and a magnitude of 21.3 +/- 1.4 mm/a to the ENE in the northeast (close to Assab of the Red Sea) relative to the station Addis Ababa on the African plate. The direction of movement is consistent with the local spreading vector of the Red Sea Rift with the N84degreesE slip direction estimated from seismic data. The sites of the E1 network moved by a rate of about 1-2 mm/a to the SE relative also to the station Addis Ababa. Further to the south there is an indication from our GPS data that the stations on the Somalian plate of the E2 network move by a rate of about 2.5 mm/a to the E or SE relative to the African plate. This motion can also be confirmed by geological and geodynamic data.

  • Electrical and luminescent properties and the spectra of deep centers in GaMnN/InGaN light-emitting diodes
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Journal of Electronic Materials. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0361-5235 .- 1543-186X. ; 33:3, s. 241-247
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Electrical and electroluminescent properties were studied for GaN/InGaN light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with the n-GaN layer up and with the top portion of the n layer made of undoped GaMnN to allow polarization modulation by applying an external magnetic field (so-called -spin-LEDs-). The contact annealing temperature was kept to 750°C, which is the thermal stability limit for retaining room-temperature magnetic ordering in the GaMnN layer. Measurable electroluminescence (EL) was obtained in these structures at threshold voltages of ∼15 V, with a lower EL signal compared to control LEDs without Mn. This is related to the existence of two parasitic junctions between the metal and the lower contact p-type layer and between the GaMnN and the n-GaN in the top contact layer.

  • Electrochemical characterization and immune system activation in blood by electrode materials in pacemaker applications
  • 2004
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The use of electrode materials in pacemaker application for electrochemical characterization and immune system activation in blood was discussed. The biocompatibility of the electrode was strongly influenced by the physical, chemical, electrochemical, and biochemical properties of the material surface. The surface properties affect the way the implant interacts with the surrounding tissue, and influence the adsorption of protein and biomolecules. Slow potentiodynamic polarization of a TaN covered electrode show a stable behavior in a wide potential range.

  • Electrochemical investigation of pickled and polished 304L stainless steel tubes
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Corrosion Science. - 0010-938X .- 1879-0496. ; 42:8, s. 1457-1469
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The influence of two pickling methods and mechanical polishing on polarization resistance, passive current density and break-down potential of 304L tubes was investigated by EIS and potentiodynamic measurements in 0.05 M H2SO4 + 0.05 M NaCl solution. The electrochemical cell was specially designed to separately measure outer and inner surfaces of tubes. The results demonstrated that the outer and inner surfaces of tubes could be separately evaluated by the electrochemical measurements using the cell configuration. Differences in the electrochemical behavior were observed between pickled and polished tubes, between the inner and outer surface of tubes, and between the two pickling methods.
