  • Bose-Einstein correlations of charged pion pairs in Au+Au collisions at root(NN)-N-s = 200 GeV
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114. ; 93:15
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Bose-Einstein correlations of identically charged pion pairs were measured by the PHENIX experiment at midrapidity in Au+Au collisions at roots(NN)=200 GeV. The Bertsch-Pratt radius parameters were determined as a function of the transverse momentum of the pair and as a function of the centrality of the collision. Using the standard core-halo partial Coulomb fits, and a new parametrization which constrains the Coulomb fraction as determined from the unlike-sign pion correlation, the ratio R-out/R-side is within 0.8-1.1 for 0.25<<1.2 GeV/c. The centrality dependence of all radii is well described by a linear scaling in N-part(1/3), and R-out/R-side for similar to0.45 GeV/c is approximately constant at unity as a function of centrality.

  • Double helicity asymmetry in inclusive midrapidity pi(0) production for polarized p+p collisions at root s=200 GeV
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114. ; 93:20: 202002
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a measurement of the double longitudinal spin asymmetry in inclusive pi(0) production in polarized proton-proton collisions at roots=200 GeV. The data were taken at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider with average beam polarizations of 0.27. The measurements are the first in a program to study the longitudinal spin structure of the proton, using strongly interacting probes, at collider energies. The asymmetry is presented for transverse momenta 1-5 GeV/c at midrapidity, where next-to-leading-order perturbative quantum chromodynamic (NLO pQCD) calculations well describe the unpolarized cross section. The observed asymmetry is small and is compared to a NLO pQCD calculation with a range of polarized gluon distributions.

  • Elliptic flow of identified hadrons in Au+Au collisions at root s(NN)=200 GeV
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114. ; 91:18: 182301
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The anisotropy parameter (v(2)), the second harmonic of the azimuthal particle distribution, has been measured with the PHENIX detector in Au+Au collisions at roots(NN)=200 GeV for identified and inclusive charged particle production at central rapidities (eta<0.35) with respect to the reaction plane defined at high rapidities (eta=3-4 ). We observe that the v(2) of mesons falls below that of (anti)baryons for p(T)>2 GeV/c, in marked contrast to the predictions of a hydrodynamical model. A quark-coalescence model is also investigated.

  • J/psi production from proton-proton collisions at root s=200 GeV
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114. ; 92:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • J/psi production has been measured in proton-proton collisions at roots=200 GeV over a wide rapidity and transverse momentum range by the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Distributions of the rapidity and transverse momentum, along with measurements of the mean transverse momentum and total production cross section are presented and compared to available theoretical calculations. The total J/psi cross section is 4.0+/-0.6(stat)+/-0.6(syst)+/-0.4(abs) mub. The mean transverse momentum is 1.80+/-0.23(stat)+/-0.16(syst) GeV/c.

  • J/psi production in Au-Au collisions at root s(NN)=200 GeV
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). - 0556-2813. ; 69:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • First results on charm quarkonia production in heavy ion collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) are presented. The yield of J/psi's measured in the PHENIX experiment via electron-positron decay pairs at midrapidity for Au-Au reactions at roots(NN) = 200 GeV is analyzed as a function of collision centrality. For this analysis we have studied 49.3x10(6) minimum bias Au-Au reactions. We present the J/psi invariant yield dN/dy for peripheral and midcentral reactions. For the most central collisions where we observe no signal above background, we quote 90% confidence level upper limits. We compare these results with our J/psi measurement from proton-proton reactions at the same energy. We find that our measurements are not consistent with models that predict strong enhancement relative to binary collision scaling.

  • Current enhancement with alternating gate voltage in the Coulomb blockade regime of a single wall carbon nanotube
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Applied Physics A. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0947-8396 .- 1432-0630. ; 79, s. 1613-1615
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigated the current–voltage characteristics of a carbon nanotube in a single electron transistor structure with alternating gate voltage. A continuous current enhancement effect with increasing frequency of the applied gate voltage up to 13 MHz is reported. Assuming that I=nef, more than 1000 electrons are driven to flow across the source–drain channel at VDS=100 mV, 13 MHz of gate voltage (Vp-p=2 V) and T=1.8 K. The continuous current enhancement is explained by the broadening effect of the discrete energy levels of the finite-length carbon nanotube.

  • Comparing the drift of Laurentia and baltica in the Proterozoic : the importance of key palaeomagnetic poles
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Tectonophysics. - 0040-1951 .- 1879-3266. ; 319:3, s. 167-198
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Key palaeomagnetic poles are defined as those which pass basic reliability criteria and are precisely and accurately dated. They allow a more rigorous analysis of Precambrian continental drift and continental reconstructions than the traditional apparent polar wander path (APWP) approach using mostly non-key poles. Between ca. 2.45 and 2.00 Ga in the early Palaeoproterozoic, key poles define the drift of the Archaean Superior craton of Laurentia, yielding a result that is quite unlike the drift interpreted in earlier studies using the APWP method. There are no early Palaeoproterozoic key poles for the other Archaean cratons that amalgamated to form Laurentia and Baltica prior to 1.8 Ga, so that a rigorous test of early Palaeoproterozoic reconstruction models is not possible. Key poles from Laurentia between ca. 1.46 and 1.267 Ga and Baltica between 1.63 and 1.265 Ga help to define, in a preliminary fashion, the early Mesoproterozoic drift of the two shields. The key pole age match at ca. 1.265 Ga is consistent with Baltica located adjacent to eastern Greenland, and geological considerations suggest that the most reasonable fit aligns the Labradorian belt of Laurentia with the Gothian belt of Baltica. Although there is limited support from non-key poles and key poles that are not matched in age for such a fit as early as ca. 1.8 Ga, no rigorous assessment will be possible until a match in key pole ages is achieved. In the late Mesoproterozoic to Neoproterozoic, Laurentia's drift is reasonably well documented by seven key poles between 1.235 and 0.73 Ga. There are no key poles in this period from Baltica, however, so that a ≈90° clockwise rotation of Baltica relative to Laurentia between 1.265 and 1.0 Ga, widely used in the literature, cannot be confirmed.

  • Progress in integrated assessment and modelling
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Environmental Modelling & Software. - 1364-8152. ; 17:3, s. 209-217
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Environmental processes have been modelled for decades. However. the need for integrated assessment and modeling (IAM) has, town as the extent and severity of environmental problems in the 21st Century worsens. The scale of IAM is not restricted to the global level as in climate change models, but includes local and regional models of environmental problems. This paper discusses various definitions of IAM and identifies five different types of integration that Lire needed for the effective solution of environmental problems. The future is then depicted in the form of two brief scenarios: one optimistic and one pessimistic. The current state of IAM is then briefly reviewed. The issues of complexity and validation in IAM are recognised as more complex than in traditional disciplinary approaches. Communication is identified as a central issue both internally among team members and externally with decision-makers. stakeholders and other scientists. Finally it is concluded that the process of integrated assessment and modelling is considered as important as the product for any particular project. By learning to work together and recognise the contribution of all team members and participants, it is believed that we will have a strong scientific and social basis to address the environmental problems of the 21st Century.

  • Development of a provisional domain model for the nursing process for use within the Health Level 7 reference information model
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: JAMIA Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association. - Philadelphia, USA : Hanley & Belfus Inc.. - 1067-5027 .- 1527-974X. ; 11:3, s. 186-94
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: Since 1999, the Nursing Terminology Summits have promoted the development, evaluation, and use of reference terminology for nursing and its integration into comprehensive health care data standards. The use of such standards to represent nursing knowledge, terminology, processes, and information in electronic health records will enhance continuity of care, decision support, and the exchange of comparable patient information. As part of this activity, working groups at the 2001, 2002, and 2003 Summit Conferences examined how to represent nursing information in the Health Level 7 (HL7) Reference Information Model (RIM).Design: The working groups represented the nursing process as a dynamic sequence of phases, each containing information specific to the activities of the phase. They used Universal Modeling Language (UML) to represent this domain knowledge in models. An Activity Diagram was used to create a dynamic model of the nursing process. After creating a structural model of the information used at each stage of the nursing process, the working groups mapped that information to the HL7 RIM. They used a hierarchical structure for the organization of nursing knowledge as the basis for a hierarchical model for "Findings about the patient." The modeling and mapping reported here were exploratory and preliminary, not exhaustive or definitive. The intent was to evaluate the feasibility of representing some types of nursing information consistently with HL7 standards.Measurements: The working groups conducted a small-scale validation by testing examples of nursing terminology against the HL7 RIM class "Observation."Results: It was feasible to map patient information from the proposed models to the RIM class "Observation." Examples illustrate the models and the mapping of nursing terminology to the HL7 RIM.Conclusion: It is possible to model and map nursing information into the comprehensive health care information model, the HL7 RIM. These models must evolve and undergo further validation by clinicians. The integration of nursing information, terminology, and processes in information models is a first step toward rendering nursing information machine-readable in electronic patient records and messages. An eventual practical result, after much more development, would be to create computable, structured information for nursing documentation.

  • Iron stress restricts photosynthetic intersystem electron transport in Synechococcus sp, PCC 7942
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: FEBS Letters. - 0014-5793 .- 1873-3468. ; 485:2-3, s. 173-177
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Although exposure of Synechococcus sp. PCC 7942 to iron stress induced the accumulation of the isiA gene product (CP43') compared with non-stressed controls, immunodetection of the N-terminus of cytochrome (Cyt) f indicated that iron stress not only reduced the content of the 40 kDa, heme-binding, Cyt f polypeptide by 32% but it also specifically induced the accumulation of a new, 23 kDa, non-heme-binding, putative Cyt f polypeptide, Concomitantly, iron stress restricted intersystem electron transport based on the in vivo reduction of P700(+), monitored as DeltaA(820)/A(820) in the presence and absence of electron transport inhibitors, as well as the inhibition of the Emerson enhancement effect on O-2 evolution. However, iron stress appeared to be associated with enhanced rates of PS I cyclic electron transport, low rates of PS I-driven photoreduction of NADP(+) but comparable rates for PS II+PS I photoreduction of NADP(+) relative to controls. We hypothesize that Synechococcus sp, PCC 7942 exhibits a dynamic capacity to uncouple PS II and PS I electron transport, which may allow for the higher than expected growth rates observed during iron stress. • Event reconstruction in the PHENIX central arm spectrometers
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments & Methods in Physics Research. Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors, and Associated Equipment. - 0167-5087. ; 482:1-2, s. 491-512
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The central arm spectrometers for the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider have been designed for the optimization of particle identification in relativistic heavy ion collisions. The spectrometers present a challenging environment for event reconstruction due to a very high track multiplicity in a complicated, focusing, magnetic field. In order to meet this challenge, nine distinct detector types are integrated for charged particle tracking, momentum reconstruction. and particle identification. The techniques which have been developed for the task of event reconstruction are described.

  • Iron stress responses in the cyanobacterium Synechococcus sp PCC7942
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Physiologia Plantarum. - 0031-9317 .- 1399-3054. ; 116:2, s. 255-263
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the present study, we describe the sequential events by which the cyanobacterium Synechococcus sp. PCC 7942 adapts to iron deficiency. In doing so, we have tried to elucidate both short and long-term acclimation to low iron stress in order to understand how the photosynthetic apparatus adjusts to low iron conditions. Our results show that after an initial step, where CP43' is induced and where ferredoxin is partly replaced by flavodoxin, the photosynthetic unit starts to undergo major rearrangements. All measured components of Photosystem I (PSI), PSII and cytochrome (Cyt) i decrease relative to chlorophyll (Chl) a . The photochemical efficiencies of the two photosystems also decline during this phase of acclimation. The well-known drop in phycobilisome content measured as phycocyanin (PC)/Chl was not due to an increased degradation, but rather to a decreased rate of synthesis. The largest effects of iron deficiency were observed on PSI, the most iron-rich structure of the photosynthetic apparatus. In the light of the recent discovery of an iron deficiency induced CP43' ring around PSI a possible dual function of this protein as both an antenna and a quencher is discussed. We also describe the time course of a blue shift in the low temperature Chl emission peak around 715 nm, which originates in PSI. The shift might reflect the disassembly and/or degradation of PSI during iron deficiency and, as a consequence, PSI might under these conditions be found predominantly in a monomeric form. We suggest that the observed functional and compositional alterations represent cellular acclimation enabling growth and development under iron deficiency, and that growth ceases when the acclimation capacity is exhausted. However, the cells remain viable even after growth has ceased, since they resumed growth once iron was added back to the culture.
