  • Turbulence Heating ObserveR - satellite mission proposal
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: JOURNAL OF PLASMA PHYSICS. - 0022-3778. ; 82
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Universe is permeated by hot, turbulent, magnetized plasmas. Turbulent plasma is a major constituent of active galactic nuclei, supernova remnants, the intergalactic and interstellar medium, the solar corona, the solar wind and the Earth's magnetosphere, just to mention a few examples. Energy dissipation of turbulent fluctuations plays a key role in plasma heating and energization, yet we still do not understand the underlying physical mechanisms involved. THOR is a mission designed to answer the questions of how turbulent plasma is heated and particles accelerated, how the dissipated energy is partitioned and how dissipation operates in different regimes of turbulence. THOR is a single-spacecraft mission with an orbit tuned to maximize data return from regions in near-Earth space - magnetosheath, shock, foreshock and pristine solar wind - featuring different kinds of turbulence. Here we summarize the THOR proposal submitted on 15 January 2015 to the 'Call for a Medium-size mission opportunity in ESAs Science Programme for a launch in 2025 (M4)'. THOR has been selected by European Space Agency (ESA) for the study phase.

    • AimsThe clinical characteristics, initial presentation, management, and outcomes of patients hospitalized with new-onset (first diagnosis) heart failure (HF) or decompensation of chronic HF are poorly understood worldwide. REPORT-HF (International REgistry to assess medical Practice with lOngitudinal obseRvation for Treatment of Heart Failure) is a global, prospective, and observational study designed to characterize patient trajectories longitudinally during and following an index hospitalization for HF. MethodsData collection for the registry will be conducted at approximate to 300 sites located in approximate to 40 countries. Comprehensive data including demographics, clinical presentation, co-morbidities, treatment patterns, quality of life, in-hospital and post-discharge outcomes, and health utilization and costs will be collected. Enrolment of approximate to 20 000 adult patients hospitalized with new-onset (first diagnosis) HF or decompensation of chronic HF over a 3-year period is planned with subsequent 3 years follow-up. PerspectiveThe REPORT-HF registry will explore the clinical characteristics, management, and outcomes of HF worldwide. This global research programme may have implications for the formulation of public health policy and the design and conduct of international clinical trials.

  • Characterisation of Pb thin films prepared by the nanosecond pulsed laser deposition technique for photocathode application
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Thin Solid Films. - : Elsevier. - 0040-6090 .- 1879-2731. ; 579, s. 50-56
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Pb thin films were prepared by the nanosecond pulsed laser deposition technique on Si (100) and polycrystalline Nb substrates for photocathode application. As the photoemission performances of a cathode are strongly affected by its surface characteristics, the Pb films were grown at different substrate temperatures with the aim of modifying the morphology and structure of thin films. An evident morphological modification in the deposited films with the formation of spherical grains at higher temperatures has been observed. X-ray diffraction measurements showed that a preferred orientation of Pb (111) normal to the substrate was achieved at 30 °C while the Pb (200) plane became strongly pronounced with the increase in the substrate temperature. Finally, a Pb thin film deposited on Nb substrate at 30 °C and tested as the photocathode showed interesting results for the application of such a device in superconducting radio frequency guns.

  • Pulsed laser deposition of yttrium photocathode suitable for use in radio-frequency guns
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Applied Physics A. - : SPRINGER. - 0947-8396 .- 1432-0630. ; 123:12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Yttrium (Y) thin film was grown by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) on a copper (Cu) polycrystalline substrate. Ex situ morphological and structural characterisations of the circular Y film of 1.2 mu m thickness and 3 mm diameter have shown a very low droplet density on the film surface and a crystalline feature with a preferred orientation along the Y (100) plane. Moreover, Y thin film resulted in being very adherent to the Cu substrate and more scratch resistant than Cu bulk. A twin thin film was deposited also on a Cu backflange of a radio-frequency (RF) gun to test the suitability of the metallic thin film as photocathode. It was observed that the Y-coated photocathode was characterised by a quantum efficiency (QE) higher than that of the Cu bulk photocathode even if the presence of space charge effects didnt allow deriving the absolute maximum value of QE of Y photocathode.

  • Structural and morphological properties of metallic thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition for photocathode application
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Applied Physics A. - : Springer Berlin/Heidelberg. - 0947-8396 .- 1432-0630. ; 122:3, s. 1-5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this work yttrium and lead thin films have been deposited by pulsed laser deposition technique and characterized by ex situ different diagnostic methods. All the films were adherent to the substrates and revealed a polycrystalline structure. Y films were uniform with a very low roughness and droplet density, while Pb thin films were characterized by a grain morphology with a relatively high roughness and droplet density. Such metallic materials are studied because they are proposed as a good alternative to copper and niobium photocathodes which are generally used in radiofrequency and superconducting radiofrequency guns, respectively. The photoemission performances of the photocathodes based on Y and Pb thin films have been also studied and discussed.

  • Tight comparison of Mg and Y thin film photocathodes obtained by the pulsed laser deposition technique
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A. - : ELSEVIER SCIENCE BV. - 0168-9002 .- 1872-9576. ; 836, s. 57-60
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this work Magnesium (Mg) and Yttrium (Y) thin films have been deposited on Copper (Cu) polycrystalline substrates by the pulsed laser ablation technique for photocathode application. Such metallic materials are studied for their interesting photoemission properties and are proposed as a good alternative to the Cu photocathode, which is generally used in radio-frequency guns. Mg and Y films were uniform with no substantial differences in morphology; a polycrystalline structure was found for both of them. Photoemission measurements of such cathodes based on thin films were performed, revealing a quantum efficiency higher than Cu bulk. Photoemission theory according to the three-step model of Spicer is invoked to explain the superior photoemission performance of Mg with respect to Y. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  • Geometry of discrete copulas
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Multivariate Analysis. - : Elsevier. - 0047-259X .- 1095-7243. ; 172, s. 162-169
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The space of discrete copulas admits a representation as a convex polytope, and this has been exploited in entropy-copula methods used in hydrology and climatology. In this paper, we focus on the class of component-wise convex copulas, i.e., ultramodular copulas, which describe the joint behavior of stochastically decreasing random vectors. We show that the family of ultramodular discrete copulas and its generalization to component-wise convex discrete quasi-copulas also admit representations as polytopes. In doing so, we draw connections to the Birkhoff polytope, the alternating sign matrix polytope, and their generalizations, thereby unifying and extending results on these polytopes from both the statistics and the discrete geometry literature.

  • Turbulence-Driven Ion Beams in the Magnetospheric Kelvin-Helmholtz Instability
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - : AMER PHYSICAL SOC. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 122:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The description of the local turbulent energy transfer and the high-resolution ion distributions measured by the Magnetospheric Multiscale mission together provide a formidable tool to explore the cross-scale connection between the fluid-scale energy cascade and plasma processes at subion scales. When the small-scale energy transfer is dominated by Alfvenic, correlated velocity, and magnetic field fluctuations, beams of accelerated particles are more likely observed. Here, for the first time, we report observations suggesting the nonlinear wave-particle interaction as one possible mechanism for the energy dissipation in space plasmas.

  • Energy budget and mechanisms of cold ion heating in asymmetric magnetic reconnection
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Geophysical Research - Space Physics. - : American Geophysical Union (AGU). - 2169-9380 .- 2169-9402. ; 122:9, s. 9396-9413
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cold ions (few tens of eV) of ionospheric origin are commonly observed on the magnetospheric side of the Earth's dayside magnetopause. As a result, they can participate in magnetic reconnection, changing locally the reconnection rate and being accelerated and heated. We present four events where cold ion heating was observed by the Magnetospheric Multiscale mission, associated with the magnetospheric Hall E field region of magnetic reconnection. For two of the events the cold ion density was small compared to the magnetosheath density, and the cold ions were heated roughly to the same temperature as magnetosheath ions inside the exhaust. On the other hand, for the other two events the cold ion density was comparable to the magnetosheath density and the cold ion heating observed was significantly smaller. Magnetic reconnection converts magnetic energy into particle energy, and ion heating is known to dominate the energy partition. We find that at least 10-25% of the energy spent by reconnection into ion heating went into magnetospheric cold ion heating. The total energy budget for cold ions may be even higher when properly accounting for the heavier species, namely helium and oxygen. Large E field fluctuations are observed in this cold ion heating region, i.e., gradients and waves, that are likely the source of particle energization. Plain Language Summary The magnetic field of Earth creates a natural shield that isolates and protects us from the particles and fields coming from our star, the Sun. This natural shield is called the magnetosphere and is filled by plasma. The particles coming from the Sun form another plasma called the solar wind and are usually deviated around the magnetosphere. However, under certain circumstances these two plasmas can reconnect (magnetic reconnection), and part of the energy and mass of the two plasmas is interchanged. Magnetic reconnection is the driver of storms and substorms inside the magnetosphere. In this work, we investigate what occurs to particles of very low energy (cold ions) of ionospheric origin when they reach the reconnecting boundary of the magnetosphere. It is found that they are energized and take an important part of the energy spent in reconnecting the plasmas. The plasma boundary develops spatial structures and emits waves that are able to heat the cold ions. Once heated, these cold ions irreversibly will escape the Earth's magnetosphere to never come back to Earth.

  • Magnetospheric Multiscale Observation of Kinetic Signatures in the Alfven Vortex
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal Letters. - : American Astronomical Society. - 2041-8205 .- 2041-8213. ; 871:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Alfven vortex is a multiscale nonlinear structure that contributes to the intermittency of turbulence. Despite previous explorations mostly on the spatial properties of the Alfven vortex (i.e., scale, orientation, and motion), the plasma characteristics within the Alfven vortex are unknown. Moreover, the connection between the plasma energization and the Alfven vortex still remains unclear. Based on high-resolution in situ measurements from the Magnetospheric Multiscale mission, we report for the first time distinctive plasma features within an Alfven vortex. This Alfven vortex is identified as being a 2D (k(perpendicular to) >> k(parallel to) ) quasi-monopole with a radius of 10 proton gyroscales. Its magnetic fluctuations delta B-perpendicular to are anti-correlated with velocity fluctuations delta V-perpendicular to, thus the parallel current density j(parallel to) and flow vorticity omega(parallel to) are anti-aligned. In different part of the vortex (i.e., edge, middle, center), the ion and electron temperatures are found to be quite different and they behave in the reverse trend: the ion temperature variations are correlated with j(parallel to), while the electron temperature variations are correlated with omega(parallel to). Furthermore, the temperature anisotropies, together with the non-Maxwellian kinetic effects, exhibit strong enhancement at peaks of vertical bar omega(parallel to)vertical bar(vertical bar j(parallel to)vertical bar) within the vortex. Comparison between observations and numerical/theoretical results are made. In addition, the energy-conversion channels and the compressibility associated with the Alfven vortex are discussed. These results may help to understand the link between coherent vortex structures and the kinetic processes, which determines how turbulence energy dissipates in the weakly collisional space plasmas.
