  • Collaborative meta-analysis of individual participant data from observational studies of Lp-PLA2 and cardiovascular diseases
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Cardiovascular Prevention & Rehabilitation. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 1741-8267 .- 1741-8275 .- 2047-4873. ; 14:1, s. 3-11
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: A large number of observational epidemiological studies have reported generally positive associations between circulating mass and activity levels of lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2 (Lp-PLA2) and the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Few studies have been large enough to provide reliable estimates in different circumstances, such as in different subgroups (e.g., by age group, sex, or smoking status) or at different Lp-PLA2 levels. Moreover, most published studies have related disease risk only to baseline values of Lp-PLA2 markers (which can lead to substantial underestimation of any risk relationships because of within-person variability over time) and have used different approaches to adjustment for possible confounding factors. OBJECTIVES: By combination of data from individual participants from all relevant observational studies in a systematic 'meta-analysis', with correction for regression dilution (using available data on serial measurements of Lp-PLA2), the Lp-PLA2 Studies Collaboration will aim to characterize more precisely than has previously been possible the strength and shape of the age and sex-specific associations of plasma Lp-PLA2 with coronary heart disease (and, where data are sufficient, with other vascular diseases, such as ischaemic stroke). It will also help to determine to what extent such associations are independent of possible confounding factors and to explore potential sources of heterogeneity among studies, such as those related to assay methods and study design. It is anticipated that the present collaboration will serve as a framework to investigate related questions on Lp-PLA2 and cardiovascular outcomes. METHODS: A central database is being established containing data on circulating Lp-PLA2 values, sex and other potential confounding factors, age at baseline Lp-PLA2 measurement, age at event or at last follow-up, major vascular morbidity and cause-specific mortality. Information about any repeat measurements of Lp-PLA2 and potential confounding factors has been sought to allow adjustment for possible confounding and correction for regression dilution. The analyses will involve age-specific regression models. Synthesis of the available observational studies of Lp-PLA2 will yield information on a total of about 15 000 cardiovascular disease endpoints.

  • Co-evolution of genomes and plasmids within Chlamydia trachomatis and the emergence in Sweden of a new variant strain
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: BMC Genomics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1471-2164. ; 10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Chlamydia trachomatis is the most common cause of sexually transmitted infections globally and the leading cause of preventable blindness in the developing world. There are two biovariants of C trachomatis: 'trachoma', causing ocular and genital tract infections, and the invasive 'lymphogranuloma venereum' strains. Recently, a new variant of the genital tract C trachomatis emerged in Sweden. This variant escaped routine diagnostic tests because it carries a plasmid with a deletion. Failure to detect this strain has meant it has spread rapidly across the country provoking a worldwide alert. In addition to being a key diagnostic target, the plasmid has been linked to chlamydial virulence. Analysis of chlamydial plasmids and their cognate chromosomes was undertaken to provide insights into the evolutionary relationship between chromosome and plasmid. This is essential knowledge if the plasmid is to be continued to be relied on as a key diagnostic marker, and for an understanding of the evolution of Chlamydia trachomatis. Results: The genomes of two new C trachomatis strains were sequenced, together with plasmids from six C trachomatis isolates, including the new variant strain from Sweden. The plasmid from the new Swedish variant has a 377 bp deletion in the first predicted coding sequence, abolishing the site used for PCR detection, resulting in negative diagnosis. In addition, the variant plasmid has a 44 bp duplication downstream of the deletion. The region containing the second predicted coding sequence is the most highly conserved region of the plasmids investigated. Phylogenetic analysis of the plasmids and chromosomes are fully congruent. Moreover this analysis also shows that ocular and genital strains diverged from a common C trachomatis progenitor. Conclusion: The evolutionary pathways of the chlamydial genome and plasmid imply that inheritance of the plasmid is tightly linked with its cognate chromosome. These data suggest that the plasmid is not a highly mobile genetic element and does not transfer readily between isolates. Comparative analysis of the plasmid sequences has revealed the most conserved regions that should be used to design future plasmid based nucleic acid amplification tests, to avoid diagnostic failures.

  • Lateral hopping of CO molecules on Pt(111) surface by femtosecond laser pulses
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 80:Article number: 245409
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Theory of heat transfer between adsorbate vibrational degrees of freedom and ultrafast laser heated hot electrons including vibrational intermode coupling is applied to calculate two-pulse correlation, laser fluence dependence and time dependence of lateral hopping of CO molecules from a step to terrace site on a stepped Pt (111) surface. The intermode coupling is a key ingredient to describe vibrational heating of the frustrated translation mode responsible for the CO hopping. The calculated results are in good agreement with the experimental results, especially if we scale down the experimentally determined absorbed fluence. It is found that CO hopping is induced by indirect heating of the FT mode by the FR mode with a strong frictional coupling to hot electrons.

  • Controlling the spectrum of x-rays generated in a laser-plasma accelerator by tailoring the laser wavefront
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Applied Physics Letters. - : AIP Publishing. - 0003-6951 .- 1077-3118. ; 95:18
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • By tailoring the wavefront of the laser pulse used in a laser-wakefield accelerator, we show that the properties of the x-rays produced due to the electron beam's betatron oscillations in the plasma can be controlled. By creating a wavefront with coma, we find that the critical energy of the synchrotronlike x-ray spectrum can be significantly increased. The coma does not substantially change the energy of the electron beam, but does increase its divergence and produces an energy-dependent exit angle, indicating that changes in the x-ray spectrum are due to an increase in the electron beam's oscillation amplitude within the wakefield.

  • Rubber friction on (apparently) smooth lubricated surfaces
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 0953-8984 .- 1361-648X. ; 20:8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study rubber sliding friction on hard lubricated surfaces. We show that even if the hard surface appears smooth to the naked eye, it may exhibit short-wavelength roughness, which may make the dominant contribution to rubber friction. That is, the observed sliding friction is mainly due to the viscoelastic deformations of the rubber by the counterface surface asperities. The results presented are of great importance for rubber sealing and other rubber applications involving ( apparently) smooth surfaces.

  • Adsorbate hopping via vibrational-mode coupling induced by femtosecond laser pulses
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 78, s. Article ID: 113408-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study the heat transfer from femtosecond laser-heated hot electrons in a metal to adsorbates in the presence of vibrational-mode coupling. The theory is successfully applied to the experimental result of atomic oxygen hopping on a vicinal Pt(111) surface. The effective friction coupling between hot electrons and the vibrational mode relevant to the hopping motion depends on the transient temperature of the partner mode excited by hot electrons. The calculated two-pulse correlation and fluence dependence of the hopping probability reproduce the experimental results, which were previously analyzed using the hot-electron temperature (Te)-dependent friction ηa(Te) in a conventional heat transfer equation. A possible elementary process behind such a hypothetic modeling using ηa(Te) is discussed in terms of an indirect heating of the vibrational mode for hopping at the surface.

  • Synthesis and Surface Modification of Birefringent Vaterite Microspheres
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Langmuir. - 0743-7463. ; 25:19, s. 11672-11679
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper reports on the synthesis of birefringent vaterite microspheres with narrow size distribution using a seeded growth method. In a post-treatment the microspheres were stabilized and functionalized through coating with a combination of organosilica and silica. The coating vastly enhanced the stability of the vaterite microspheres in biological buffers and allowed the attachment of biomolecules such as DNA or proteins. As an example, streptavidin was attached to the surface of the functionalized microspheres. These results pave the way for the use of birefringent vaterite particles for the micromanipulation of single biological molecules such as DNA or specific proteins in an optical trap capable of exerting and measuring torques. The stabilized birefringent microspheres may also find use for biosensor and biological screening applications.
