  • Equivalence of topological form for curvilinear geometric objects
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: International journal of computational geometry and applications. - 0218-1959. ; 10:6, s. 609-622
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Given a curvilinear geometric object in R3, made up of properly-joined parametric patches defined in terms of control points, it is of interest to know under what conditions the object will retain its original topological form when the control points are perturbed. For example, the patches might be triangular BΘzier surface patches, and the geometric object may represent the boundary of a solid in a solid-modeling application. In this paper we give sufficient conditions guaranteeing that topological form is preserved by an ambient isotopy. The main conditions to be satisfied are that the original object should be continuously perturbed in a way that introduces no self-intersections of any patch, and such that the patches remain properly joined. The patches need only have C0 continuity along the boundaries joining adjacent patches. The results apply directly to most surface modeling schemes, and they are of interest in several areas of application.

  • Crystalline molecular sieve layers and processes for their manufacture
  • 2000
  • Patent (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • A process is described for the manufacture of crystalline molecular sieve layers with good para-xylene over meta-xylene selectivity's good para-xylene permeances and selectivities. The process requires impregnation of the support prior to hydrothermal synthesis using the seeded method and may be undertaken with pre-impregnation masking. The crystalline molecular sieve layer has a selectivity (.alpha..sub.x) for para-xylene over meta-xylene of 2 or greater and a permeance (Q.sub.x) for para-xylene of 3.27.times.10.sup.-8 mole(px)/m.sup.2.s.Pa(px) or greater measured at a temperature of .gtoreq.250.degree. C. and an aromatic hydrocarbon partial pressure of .gtoreq.10.times.10.sup.3 Pa.

  • Endocardial expression and functional characterization of endothelin-1
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry. - 0300-8177. ; 224:1-2, s. 151-158
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Endothelin-1 (ET-1), a 21 amino acid peptide exerts a wide range of biological activities including vasoconstriction, mitogenesis and inotropic effects on the heart. In this study, we examined whether endocardial endothelial cells express ET-1 and evaluated its functional properties. Using immunofluorescence localization method, we demonstrated cytoplasmic staining of ET-1 in the human endocardial endothelial cells from the right atrium and left ventricle. Employing reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) expression of ET-1 mRNA and its receptors ET(A) and ET(B) mRNAs were found in human myocardial as well as in endocardial endothelial cells. Biological activity of endocardial endothelial cells derived ET-1 was established as the conditioned media obtained from cultured porcine endocardial endothelial cells induced a slowly developing, strong and long-lasting contraction of circular rat aortic segments, with similar characteristics to that obtained with exogenous ET-1. Furthermore, the selective endothelin-A receptor antagonist, FR 139317, blocked the conditioned media induced contractions. Our results suggest that endocardial endothelial cells express and release biologically active ET-1 which could play a pivotal role in the regulation of myocardial contractility as well as a circulatory peptide may further act in other peripheral target organs.

  • Copepods act as a switch between alternative trophic cascades in marine pelagic food webs
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Ecology Letters. ; 7:4, s. 321-328
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A recent meta-analysis indicates that trophic cascades (indirect effects of predators on plants via herbivores) are weak in marine plankton in striking contrast to freshwater plankton (Shurin et al. 2002 , Ecol. Lett., 5, 785-791). Here we show that in a marine plankton community consisting of jellyfish, calanoid copepods and algae, jellyfish predation consistently reduced copepods but produced two distinct, opposite responses of algal biomass. Calanoid copepods act as a switch between alternative trophic cascades along food chains of different length and with counteracting effects on algal biomass. Copepods reduced large algae but simultaneously promoted small algae by feeding on ciliates. The net effect of jellyfish on total algal biomass was positive when large algae were initially abundant in the phytoplankton, negative when small algae were dominant, but zero when experiments were analysed in combination. In contrast to marine systems, major pathways of energy flow in Daphnia-dominated freshwater systems are of similar chain length. Thus, differences in the length of alternative, parallel food chains may explain the apparent discrepancy in trophic cascade strength between freshwater and marine planktonic systems.
