  • MT goes farming : comparing two machine translation approaches on a new domain
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Fourth International Conference on Language Resources and Evaluation (LREC'04). - Paris, France : ELRA - European Language Resources Association. ; , s. 2043-2046
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the paper we present detailed analyses of two machine translation systems when applied to documents of a previously unseen domain: agricultural texts from the European Union. The two systems compared are a statistical machine translation (SMT) system using the freely available ISI ReWrite Decoder (Germann 2003a), and the rule-based machine translation system MATS (Sågvall Hein et al. 2002). For the purpose of evaluation we use a sentence-aligned Swedish-English corpus of approximately 75,000 words per language, where 90% are used for training and 10% are used for evaluation. In the paper we discuss the outcome of automatic evaluation and the results of our manual quality assessment.

  • The machine translation system MATS : past, present & future
  • 2004
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This is a status report of the rule-based machine translation system MATS (Sågvall Hein et al., 2002). It describes the development into its current state, which has recently been focused on extending the linguistic resources to new domains and improving robustness. Incases where an input sentence is not fully processable by the system, partial results are taken care of and used in producing a translationby complementary methods. A road-map for future development is also sketched.

  • Large Housing Estates in Sweden. Overview of developments and problems in Jönköping and Stockholm
  • 2003
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • All over Europe massive numbers of people live in large-scale housing estates built after the Second World War. The estates were carefully planned, but now often manifest a mulitude af problems. They house large numbers of low-income households, the unemployment rates are above average and in some countries they have become concentration areas for ethnic minorities. Many estates are becoming increasingly associated with crime and social exclusion. The circumstances on the estates and policy initiatives associated with these are focus of the RESTATE-project. RESTATE is the acronym for Restructuring Large-scale Housing Estates in European Cities: Good Practices and New Visions for Sustainable Neighbourhoods and Cities. The study draws on estates in ten European countries: France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom. The present report deals specifically with large housing estates in two cities in Sweden: Jönköping och Stockholm. The basic questions are about physical structure, demographic-, economic- and socio-cultural developments. The same kind of information for estates in other countries in the RESTATE-project can be found in the parallel reports

  • Dödens semiotik : gravstenen som odödlighetens medium
  • 2002

  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Läkartidningen. - 0023-7205. ; 99:10, s. 80-1083
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • At the Department of Community Medicine at Lund University we have given courses in basic research methodology since 1989. The course has yielded 20 points of university credit, the equivalent of one full-time semester of studies, and it has been run part-time, covering one and a half years. Our aim has been to provide a large number of physicians with basic training in research methods, and to stimulate the engagement of new scientific students from the whole Southern Health Care Re-gion. During the first ten years, 138 general practitioners (20% of the GPs of the region) and 202 specialists completed our courses. Up till now, 19 GPs (14%) and 19 specialists (9%) have begun PhD studies. During the last two years, another 100 physicians from southern Sweden have attended our courses, as well as GPs from Zealand in Denmark. We have been developing our course in basic research methods during a twelve-year period, and it is now well established in our health care region. We feel that we have succeeded in reaching the two goals we had set up: to give a large number of physicians a fundamental knowledge of research meth-ods and to recruit and increase the number of PhD students. We believe that medical research and development must flourish also outside the traditional university settings.

  • Reconstruction of ancestral haplotypes in a 12-generation schizophrenia pedigree
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Psychiatric Genetics. - Philadelphia : Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. - 0955-8829 .- 1473-5873. ; 14:1, s. 1-8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We searched for candidate chromosomal regions inherited identical by descent in 19 patients suffering from schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder that are related 12 generations back, to an ancestral couple born in the middle of the seventeenth century. To accomplish this goal, we constructed complete chromosomal haplotypes for each patient using genotype data from 450 markers. In total, 12 haplotype regions (with sizes ranging from 0.6 to 10.9 cM) constituted by three markers each were identical in three or more of the affected individuals. The largest genomic segment was located on 6q25, a region previously shown to be significantly more frequent in patients than controls, and proposed to contain a schizophrenia susceptibility locus. For the remaining 11 candidate haplotypes, we estimated haplotype frequencies from all the 43 affected members collected from the same family and 46 unrelated control individuals. This analysis indicated that at least four of the 11 candidate haplotypes are ancestral, since the frequencies were significantly higher in patients than in controls. Five additional haplotypes showed higher estimated frequencies in the patients but the differences were not significant. Interestingly, five of these 11 genomic regions are located in, or close to, candidate regions previously suggested to contain susceptibility genes for schizophrenia. The regions are 5q21-23, 8p21-22, 1 0p13-15, 13q12-13 and 22q12-13. Several of these haplotypes are probably ancestral linkage disequilibrium blocks inherited from the original couple. There exists, however, the possibility that one or more of these regions harbour schizophrenia susceptibility loci that may have epistatic interactions among them.

  • Coupled Liquid Separation and Spectrometric Detection of Organic Compounds Containing Hetero-atoms
  • 2004
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis exemplifies the strength in the combination of inductively coupled plasma (ICP) spectrometry and electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry ESI-MS/MS as detection techniques for liquid chromatography (LC) in the search for and investigation of compounds that bind or can bind hetero-atoms. Furthermore, some aspects involved in the coupling of LC and ICP spectrometry and quantification without identical standards have been studied. The importance of using a separation step in combination with ICP spectrometry was shown for urine and blood plasma samples from patients treated with boron neutron capture therapy. In addition to the carrier molecule used in the therapy, one major and a few possible minor metabolites were found in the urine samples. One fragment mass of the major metabolite was obtained with LC-ESI-MS/MS. Liquid chromatography coupled to ICP-MS was also shown to be a valuable tool for fingerprinting metal-binding compounds in complex matrices, such as siderophores (iron-complexing compounds) in soil. The presence of at least two siderophores in a field soil solution sample could be revealed by LC-ICP-MS. Their identities could thereafter be determined by LC-ESI-MS/MS.The non-UV-absorbing o-carboranylalanine could be quantified in relation to its degradation products by LC-ICP-AES, which provided information about the mechanism behind the degradation. Moreover, LC-ICP spectrometry was shown to provide an accurate quantification of biomolecules (bias < 10 %) when evaluated from external calibration graphs based on inorganic elemental standards. Finally, the causes of the large decrease in boron signal seen when adding acetonitrile to the LC mobile phase in LC-ICP-MS was investigated in some detail. Space charge effects might explain a large part of the depression from carbon species on the boron signal.

  • Adaptation of health care seeking behavior during childbirth : Focus group discussions with women living in the suburban areas of Luanda, Angola
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Health Care for Women International. - New York, NY : Taylor & Francis Group. - 0739-9332 .- 1096-4665. ; 25:3, s. 255-280
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to explore how various factors influenced women's decisions regarding place of confinement in Luanda, Angola. Ten focus group discussions were conducted with pregnant and nonpregnant women residing in suburban areas of Luanda and the data were analyzed using the grounded theory technique. Four patterns of action of the main theme, "the molding of women'scare-seeking behavior during childbirth," were identified: (I) the "labor process 'on-course' avoiding pattern"; (II) the "labor process 'off-course' avoiding pattern"; (III) the "labor process 'on-course' approaching pattern"; and (IV) the "labor process 'off-course' approaching pattern." Our findings indicate that personal "courage" and social support empowered women and impacted on their preference for home birth, whereas demand for informal user fees and perceived low quality of care influenced women to avoid institutional care during childbirth, sometimes even in spite ofcomplications. Ability to meet demands for informal user fees and knowledge of childbirth influenced women to seek institutional care. The study highlights the need to improve the quality of available maternal health care addressing the implicit educational, attitudinal, and ethical issues.

  • Quantification of myocardial hypoperfusion with 99m Tc-sestamibi in patients undergoing prolonged coronary artery balloon occlusion.
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Medicine Communications. - 1473-5628. ; 23:3, s. 219-228
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • SUMMARY: Percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty provides an excellent opportunity to investigate the location and quantity of hypoperfusion during sudden complete occlusion of one of the major coronary arteries. Thirty-five patients referred for elective percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty were injected intravenously with 99mTc-sestamibi during balloon inflation. To visualize and quantify the hypoperfused region, a map of perfusion was constructed from that occlusion study and from the control study performed on the following day. Patients were divided into groups according to proximal or distal occlusion within each of the three coronary arteries. The region of myocardium supplied by each coronary artery varied in location and extended outside the typical borders for all arteries, but most prominently for the left circumflex coronary artery. The quantities of hypoperfusion varied within each artery group, but the average hypoperfusion was greater for the left anterior descending coronary artery than for either the right coronary artery or the left circumflex coronary artery. It is concluded that the quantities of hypoperfusion were highly variable within each artery group. Occlusion of the left anterior descending coronary artery was associated with the largest ischaemic region. The area of hypoperfusion extended outside the typical borders, most prominently for the left circumflex coronary artery.

  • Determination of 222Rn and 226Ra in water using a large volume ionisation chamber
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Journal of Environmental Radioactivity. - 0265-931X. ; 48:2, s. 235-245
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A new method for measuring 222Rn and 226Ra in water has been devised. It is based on exhaling radon to a void volume by continuous bubbling of air through the water. The exhaled radon is then transferred in a closed circuit to a modified radon gas pulse ionisation chamber for alpha-spectrometric measurements. About 86% of the radon in water is transferred from 0.75 l of water to the void volume (3.2 l). The set-up offers direct and specific 222Rn measurements for a wide range of concentrations and shows a low detection limit (LLD=45 mBq l−1 for 8 h counting time). Radium in water is measured, via radon, after sample storage for a month. The method was compared with gamma ray spectrometry for radon and for radium, the latter after pre-concentration by co-precipitation with MnO2 from 10 l water samples. An excellent agreement between the two techniques was obtained. As a part of a radon survey, the method was employed for analysis of drinking water from bedrock wells.

  • Impact of fluoride and other aquatic parameters on radon concentration in natural waters
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Journal of Applied Radiation & Isotopes. - : Elsevier BV. - 0969-8043 .- 1872-9800. ; 60:1, s. 99-104
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Radon (222Rn) accumulation in water in relation to stable elements was studied for the purpose of determining factors influencing the transfer of 222Rn to and from water. In 72 groundwater samples, 222Rn and about 70 analytical parameters were analysed using radiometric and ICP-MS techniques. Using multivariate statistics (partial least squares), it was observed that 222Rn has a positive correlation with fluoride and uranium. The correlation with fluoride was further investigated by a laboratory time-scale experiment to measure the emanation of 222Rn from water as a function of fluoride, pH and carbonate. The transfer of 222Rn from water was measured by continuous monitoring in air in a closed loop set-up. It was observed that fluoride in water adhere or trap 222Rn preferably in acidic water (pH 3). It is suspected that natural physical processes (such as diffusion and microbubble phenomenon) are less effective to transport 222Rn in the presence of fluoride.

  • Radon in natural waters : Analytical Methods; Correlation to Environmental Parameters; Radiation Dose Estimation; and GIS Applications
  • 2003
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Investigations of radon in natural water and its relation to physical and chemical parameters are outlined in this thesis. In particular, a method for measuring 222Rn in water at low concentrations (~20 mBq.l-1) is described, followed by discussions concerning the design and its application to study both radon and parameters influencing radon levels in natural waters. A topic considered is the impact of fluoride and other aquatic parameters on radon in water. Moreover, variables such as uranium series radionuclides and stable elements in water, bedrock and sediment radioactivity and geology are investigated in two case studies. This was performed by employing radiometric-, chemical-, statistical- and GIS & geostatistical- analyses. The general water chemistry and presence of some elements such as fluoride was observed to influence radon levels in water. Health aspects of radon in drinking water are discussed based on radiation dose assessments. The radiation doses are compared with and added to doses incurred from ingestion of uranium, radium and polonium isotopes in drinking water and inhalation of radon in air in order to estimate total exposures for different age categories. The results may have a potential for future epidemiological studies.

  • Spatial correlation between radon (222Rn) in groundwater and bedrock uranium (238U): GIS and geostatistical analyses
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Journal of Spatial Hydrology. - 1530-4736. ; 2:2, s. 1-10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study describes approaches to create surface maps of radon in groundwater based on measurements of radon (222Rn) in drilled bedrock wells at unevenly distributed sites and uranium bedrock maps from the South East of Sweden, the Östergotland county (N 58°14’ – N 58°56’and E 14°53’ – E 16°06’), see figure 1. Geostatistical techniques of inverse distance weighted(IDW), kriging and cokriging were compared in terms of their interpolation power and correlation between the produced radon in the water layer and the bedrock uranium layer. The goal of these analyses and calculations is to improve our understanding concerning the factors influencing the transport of radon. Therefore, these interpolation techniques were investigated by optimizing parameters that are used in the specific interpolation. Using the IDW interpolator method at fixed radius enabled us to determine the linkage or search distances for auto correlation, and linkage between radon in water and bedrock. This method showed good agreement with the cokriging method when using uranium concentration as a secondary variable. Good interpolation layers (with least root mean square errors RMSE=232) were obtained by kriging. However, the kriged radon surface showed poor correlation with bedrock uranium layers. The best radon in waterlayer that match with uranium in bedrock layer was produced using IDW interpolator (RMSE=377, using all points). The correlation coefficient (R2) is 0.5 while for the kriging method the best correlation is R2 = 0.1. A compromise between the two approaches is demonstrated.

  • Uranium and thorium series radionuclides in drinking water from drilled bedrock wells: correlation to geology and bedrock radioactivity and dose estimation
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Radiation protection dosimetry. - 0144-8420. ; 102:3, s. 249-258
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Natural radioactivity in drinking water from 328 drilled wells was studied in correlation to source parameters. Poor correlation to both aquifer geology and bedrock radioactivity was observed. Concentrations of 238U, 226Ra, 228Ra, 222Rn and 210Po in groundwater samples was in the ranges <0.027-5.3, <0.016-4.9, <0.014-1.24, 5-8105 and <0.05-0.947 Bq.l(-1) respectively. In about 80% of the sites the radon concentration exceeds the Nordic recommended exemption level for radon in drinking water and 15% of the sites exceed the action limit. The effective doses from ingestion were calculated and presented in association with geology. Doses due to ingestion ranged between 0.05 and 20.4 mSv.y(-1), where the average contribution from 222Rn amounted to 75%. In comparison, the effective doses from inhalation of indoor 222Rn ranged between 0.2 and 20 mSv.y(-1). The average contribution from inhalation of 222Rn in air to the total effective dose (ingestion+inhalation) was 58 +/- 22%, 73 +/- 18% and 77 +/- 16% (1 SD) for the age categories 1 y, 10 y and adults respectively.

  • Large Housing Estates in Sweden. Policies and practices
  • 2004
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • RESTATE is the acronyme for Restructuring Large-scale Housing Estates in European Cities: Good Practices and New Visions for Sustainable Neighbourhoods and Cities. The project focus on large housing estates built after the Second World War in ten European countries: France, Germany, Hungury, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Slovenia, Spain and United Kingdom. The aim of this report is to answer the following question: - What is the philosophy behind the different existing policies with regard to large-scale housing estates in Sweden, specifically in the cities of Stockholm and Jönköping. What are the the main aims? What are the main activities included in the policies and what is the balance between these activities? - How are these policies organised? Who participated in the policy and who has decided about this participation? Can the policy be seen as a top-down or as a bottom-up process? What are the advantages and the disadvantages of these approaches? Has the policy, the way that it is organised and the way that it is perceived by residents and others changed over the time period that it has been in place? The same kind of information for estates in other countries in the RESTATE project can be found in the parallel reports.
