  • Counting the Minutes-Measuring Truck Driver Time Efficiency
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Transportation Journal. - 0041-1612. ; 54:2, s. 275-287
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • How truck drivers spend their time is crucial to the profitability of motor carriers. However, the aspect of time has been marginally addressed in industry practice and academic literature on motor-carrier strategies and operations. Given the importance of the drivers in transport operations, the purpose of this article is to outline how driver time in motor-carrier operations can be measured using various methods. The underlying empirical data related to transport efficiency have been collected over five years throughout numerous projects in Europe. The article summarizes the experiences from the measurements carried out in these projects. In total, 80 drivers from 22 motor carriers were measured using different types of participant observations and driver self-observation. Practitioners addressing drivers' time use will find important principles to guide their work in measuring drivers' activities. For future research into driver activities, we suggest using the nine activity categories proposed in our note.

  • Flow Pooling as Lateral Collaboration
  • 2015
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this paper is to analyse the Multi User Concept (MUC) approach, a combination of vertical and horizontal collaboration (lateral collaboration) across different actors in a supply chain. To analyse this concept a quantitative case study using modelling and simulation was made based on actual data from several companies in an automotive supply chain. On a supply chain level, the model shows significant advantages for the MUC approach in terms of cost and service levels. However for some of the actors, there is only very limited individual improvement. Hence they have no incentive to join with the other companies, meaning that the feasibility of the cooperation is placed in danger.

  • Multi-Dimensional Framework of Rural Supply Chain Management : Moving towards new research perspectives
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: NOFOMA Conference Proccedings.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose:This paper aims to present an exploratory view of rural supply chain management (RSCM) and furthermore, to provide a framework to facilitate further study and research. The paper also identifies future research directions derived from the framework.Design/methodology/approach:Based on the limited literature in the field, this paper adopts an inductive approach using an interdisciplinary panel of international experts.Findings:The findings pinpoint that RSCM is multi-faced and classifies the research area into four main dimensions and lenses, resulting in a holistic framework which brings together the wide-ranging character of the areas. The four proposed overarching dimensions of RSCM are; rural logistics, policy, community and innovation.Research limitations/implications:The research shows that there exists an explicit need for more research on RSCM. This paper provides a foundation for future examination of, and theory building in, this research area. Specifically, it highlights a significant number of opportunities for further research for scholars from various disciplines.Practical implications:This paper can support the development of rural markets and businesses while they cope with the logistical challenges (e.g. scale effects) particularly relevant to retail and service industries. It also enables leveraging opportunities (e.g. heterogeneity and identity) in these areas.Original/value:This work represents the first initiative to present a comprehensive view of RSCM, and expands supply chain management beyond focal firms to consider the ecosystem posited to be a requisite in the study of the concept of RSCM.
