  • Robust estimation of bacterial cell count from optical density
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Communications Biology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2399-3642. ; 3:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Optical density (OD) is widely used to estimate the density of cells in liquid culture, but cannot be compared between instruments without a standardized calibration protocol and is challenging to relate to actual cell count. We address this with an interlaboratory study comparing three simple, low-cost, and highly accessible OD calibration protocols across 244 laboratories, applied to eight strains of constitutive GFP-expressing E. coli. Based on our results, we recommend calibrating OD to estimated cell count using serial dilution of silica microspheres, which produces highly precise calibration (95.5% of residuals <1.2-fold), is easily assessed for quality control, also assesses instrument effective linear range, and can be combined with fluorescence calibration to obtain units of Molecules of Equivalent Fluorescein (MEFL) per cell, allowing direct comparison and data fusion with flow cytometry measurements: in our study, fluorescence per cell measurements showed only a 1.07-fold mean difference between plate reader and flow cytometry data.

  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Military Medical Research. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2054-9369. ; 7:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is the cause of a rapidly spreading illness, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), affecting more than seventeen million people around the world. Diagnosis and treatment guidelines for clinicians caring for patients are needed. In the early stage, we have issued "A rapid advice guideline for the diagnosis and treatment of 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) infected pneumonia (standard version)"; now there are many direct evidences emerged and may change some of previous recommendations and it is ripe for develop an evidence-based guideline. We formed a working group of clinical experts and methodologists. The steering group members proposed 29 questions that are relevant to the management of COVID-19 covering the following areas: chemoprophylaxis, diagnosis, treatments, and discharge management. We searched the literature for direct evidence on the management of COVID-19, and assessed its certainty generated recommendations using the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) approach. Recommendations were either strong or weak, or in the form of ungraded consensus-based statement. Finally, we issued 34 statements. Among them, 6 were strong recommendations for, 14 were weak recommendations for, 3 were weak recommendations against and 11 were ungraded consensus-based statement. They covered topics of chemoprophylaxis (including agents and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) agents), diagnosis (including clinical manifestations, reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), respiratory tract specimens, IgM and IgG antibody tests, chest computed tomography, chest x-ray, and CT features of asymptomatic infections), treatments (including lopinavir-ritonavir, umifenovir, favipiravir, interferon, remdesivir, combination of antiviral drugs, hydroxychloroquine/chloroquine, interleukin-6 inhibitors, interleukin-1 inhibitors, glucocorticoid, qingfei paidu decoction, lianhua qingwen granules/capsules, convalescent plasma, lung transplantation, invasive or noninvasive ventilation, and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO)), and discharge management (including discharge criteria and management plan in patients whose RT-PCR retesting shows SARS-CoV-2 positive after discharge). We also created two figures of these recommendations for the implementation purpose. We hope these recommendations can help support healthcare workers caring for COVID-19 patients.

  • 2023
  • Ingår i: ACS Nano. - : American Chemical Society. - 1936-0851 .- 1936-086X. ; 17:6, s. 5211-5295
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Humans rely increasingly on sensors to address grand challenges and to improve quality of life in the era of digitalization and big data. For ubiquitous sensing, flexible sensors are developed to overcome the limitations of conventional rigid counterparts. Despite rapid advancement in bench-side research over the last decade, the market adoption of flexible sensors remains limited. To ease and to expedite their deployment, here, we identify bottlenecks hindering the maturation of flexible sensors and propose promising solutions. We first analyze challenges in achieving satisfactory sensing performance for real-world applications and then summarize issues in compatible sensor-biology interfaces, followed by brief discussions on powering and connecting sensor networks. Issues en route to commercialization and for sustainable growth of the sector are also analyzed, highlighting environmental concerns and emphasizing nontechnical issues such as business, regulatory, and ethical considerations. Additionally, we look at future intelligent flexible sensors. In proposing a comprehensive roadmap, we hope to steer research efforts towards common goals and to guide coordinated development strategies from disparate communities. Through such collaborative efforts, scientific breakthroughs can be made sooner and capitalized for the betterment of humanity.

  • Dense sampling of bird diversity increases power of comparative genomics
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Nature. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0028-0836 .- 1476-4687. ; 587:7833
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Whole-genome sequencing projects are increasingly populating the tree of life and characterizing biodiversity(1-4). Sparse taxon sampling has previously been proposed to confound phylogenetic inference(5), and captures only a fraction of the genomic diversity. Here we report a substantial step towards the dense representation of avian phylogenetic and molecular diversity, by analysing 363 genomes from 92.4% of bird families-including 267 newly sequenced genomes produced for phase II of the Bird 10,000 Genomes (B10K) Project. We use this comparative genome dataset in combination with a pipeline that leverages a reference-free whole-genome alignment to identify orthologous regions in greater numbers than has previously been possible and to recognize genomic novelties in particular bird lineages. The densely sampled alignment provides a single-base-pair map of selection, has more than doubled the fraction of bases that are confidently predicted to be under conservation and reveals extensive patterns of weak selection in predominantly non-coding DNA. Our results demonstrate that increasing the diversity of genomes used in comparative studies can reveal more shared and lineage-specific variation, and improve the investigation of genomic characteristics. We anticipate that this genomic resource will offer new perspectives on evolutionary processes in cross-species comparative analyses and assist in efforts to conserve species. A dataset of the genomes of 363 species from the Bird 10,000 Genomes Project shows increased power to detect shared and lineage-specific variation, demonstrating the importance of phylogenetically diverse taxon sampling in whole-genome sequencing.

  • Implicating genes, pleiotropy, and sexual dimorphism at blood lipid loci through multi-ancestry meta-analysis.

  • Ingår i: Genome biology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1474-760X .- 1465-6906 .- 1474-7596. ; 23:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Genetic variants within nearly 1000 loci are known to contribute to modulation of blood lipid levels. However, the biological pathways underlying these associations are frequently unknown, limiting understanding of these findings and hindering downstream translational efforts such as drug target discovery. To expand our understanding of the underlying biological pathways and mechanisms controlling blood lipid levels, we leverage a large multi-ancestry meta-analysis (N=1,654,960) of blood lipids to prioritize putative causal genes for 2286 lipid associations using six gene prediction approaches. Using phenome-wide association (PheWAS) scans, we identify relationships of genetically predicted lipid levels to other diseases and conditions. We confirm known pleiotropic associations with cardiovascular phenotypes and determine novel associations, notably with cholelithiasis risk. We perform sex-stratified GWAS meta-analysis of lipid levels and show that 3-5% of autosomal lipid-associated loci demonstrate sex-biased effects. Finally, we report 21 novel lipid loci identified on the X chromosome. Many of the sex-biased autosomal and X chromosome lipid loci show pleiotropic associations with sex hormones, emphasizing the role of hormone regulation in lipid metabolism.Taken together, our findings provide insights into the biological mechanisms through which associated variants lead to altered lipid levels and potentially cardiovascular disease risk.

  • A global survey on the use of the international classification of diseases codes for metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease.
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Hepatology international. - 1936-0541.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With the implementation of the 11th edition of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) and the publication of the metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) nomenclature in 2020, it is important to establish consensus for the coding of MAFLD in ICD-11. This will inform subsequent revisions of ICD-11.Using the Qualtrics XM and WJX platforms, questionnaires were sent online to MAFLD-ICD-11 coding collaborators, authors of papers, and relevant association members.A total of 890 international experts in various fields from 61 countries responded to the survey. We also achieved full coverage of provincial-level administrative regions in China. 77.1% of respondents agreed that MAFLD should be represented in ICD-11 by updating NAFLD, with no significant regional differences (77.3% in Asia and 76.6% in non-Asia, p=0.819). Over 80% of respondents agreed or somewhat agreed with the need to assign specific codes for progressive stages of MAFLD (i.e. steatohepatitis) (92.2%), MAFLD combined with comorbidities (84.1%), or MAFLD subtypes (i.e., lean, overweight/obese, and diabetic) (86.1%).This global survey by a collaborative panel of clinical, coding, health management and policy experts, indicates agreement that MAFLD should be coded in ICD-11. The data serves as a foundation for corresponding adjustments in the ICD-11 revision.

  • Tailoring magnetic order via atomically stacking 3d/5d electrons to achieve high-performance spintronic devices
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Applied Physics Reviews. - : AMER INST PHYSICS. - 1931-9401. ; 7:1
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The ability to tune magnetic orders, such as magnetic anisotropy and topological spin texture, is desired to achieve high-performance spintronic devices. A recent strategy has been to employ interfacial engineering techniques, such as the introduction of spin-correlated interfacial coupling, to tailor magnetic orders and achieve novel magnetic properties. We chose a unique polar-nonpolar LaMnO3/SrIrO3 superlattice because Mn (3d)/Ir (5d) oxides exhibit rich magnetic behaviors and strong spin-orbit coupling through the entanglement of their 3d and 5d electrons. Through magnetization and magnetotransport measurements, we found that the magnetic order is interface-dominated as the superlattice period is decreased. We were able to then effectively modify the magnetization, tilt of the ferromagnetic easy axis, and symmetry transition of the anisotropic magnetoresistance of the LaMnO3/SrIrO3 superlattice by introducing additional Mn (3d) and Ir (5d) interfaces. Further investigations using in-depth first-principles calculations and numerical simulations revealed that these magnetic behaviors could be understood by the 3d/5d electron correlation and Rashba spin-orbit coupling. The results reported here demonstrate a new route to synchronously engineer magnetic properties through the atomic stacking of different electrons, which would contribute to future applications in high-capacity storage devices and advanced computing.

  • Geometry design of tethered small-molecule acceptor enables highly stable and efficient polymer solar cells
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - : NATURE PORTFOLIO. - 2041-1723. ; 14:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With the power conversion efficiency of binary polymer solar cells dramatically improved, the thermal stability of the small-molecule acceptors raised the main concerns on the device operating stability. Here, to address this issue, thiophene-dicarboxylate spacer tethered small-molecule acceptors are designed, and their molecular geometries are further regulated via the thiophene-core isomerism engineering, affording dimeric TDY-alpha with a 2, 5-substitution and TDY-beta with 3, 4-substitution on the core. It shows that TDY-alpha processes a higher glass transition temperature, better crystallinity relative to its individual small-molecule acceptor segment and isomeric counterpart of TDY-beta, and amore stablemorphology with the polymer donor. As a result, the TDY-alpha based device delivers a higher device efficiency of 18.1%, and most important, achieves an extrapolated lifetime of about 35000 hours that retaining 80% of their initial efficiency. Our result suggests that with proper geometry design, the tethered small-molecule acceptors can achieve both high device efficiency and operating stability.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Inspired by a wood-like multicomponent structure, an interface-reinforced method was developed to fabricate high-performance cellulose nanofibril (CNF)/carbon nanotube (CNT) nanocomposites. Holocellulose nanofibrils (HCNFs) with core-shell structure were first obtained from bagasse via mild delignification and mechanical defibration process. The well-preserved native hemicellulose as the amphiphilic shell of HCNFs could act as a binding agent, sizing agent, and even dispersing agent between HCNFs and CNTs. Remarkably, both the tensile strength at high relative humidity (83% RH) and electrical conductivity of the HCNF/CNT nanocomposites were significantly improved up to 121 MPa and 321 S/m, respectively, demonstrating great superiority compared to normal CNF/CNT composite films. Furthermore, these HCNF/CNT composites with outstanding integrated performances exhibited great potential in the field of flexible liquid sensing.

  • A single-nucleotide polymorphism in a Plasmodium berghei ApiAP2 transcription factor alters the development of host immunity
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Science Advances. - : American Association for the Advancement of Science. - 2375-2548. ; 6:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The acquisition of malaria immunity is both remarkably slow and unpredictable. At present, we know little about the malaria parasite genes that influence the host's ability to mount a protective immune response. Here, we show that a single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) resulting in a single amino acid change (S to F) in an ApiAP2 transcription factor in the rodent malaria parasite Plasmodium berghei (Pb) NK65 allowed infected mice to mount a T helper cell 1 (T(H)1)-type immune response that controlled subsequent infections. As compared to PbNK65(S), PbNK65(F) parasites differentially expressed 46 genes, most of which are predicted to play roles in immune evasion. PbNK65(F) infections resulted in an early interferon-gamma response and a later expansion of germinal centers, resulting in high levels of infected red blood cell-specific T(H)1-type immunoglobulin G2b (IgG2b) and IgG2c antibodies. Thus, the Pb ApiAP2 transcription factor functions as a critical parasite virulence factor in malaria infections.

  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - : Nature Publishing Group. - 2045-2322. ; 10:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cerebral malaria (CM) is the deadliest form of severe Plasmodium infections. Currently, we have limited understanding of the mechanisms by which Plasmodium parasites induce CM. The mouse model of CM, experimental CM (ECM), induced by infection with the rodent parasite, Plasmodium berghei ANKA (PbANKA) has been extensively used to study the pathophysiology of CM. Recent genomic analyses revealed that the coding regions of PbANKA and the closely related Plasmodium berghei NK65 (PbNK65), that does not cause ECM, differ in only 21 single nucleotide polymorphysims (SNPs). Thus, the SNP-containing genes might contribute to the pathogenesis of ECM. Although the majority of these SNPs are located in genes of unknown function, one SNP is located in the DNA binding site of a member of the Plasmodium ApiAP2 transcription factor family, that we recently showed functions as a virulence factor alternating the host's immune response to the parasite. Here, we investigated the impact of this SNP on the development of ECM. Our results using CRISPR-Cas9 engineered parasites indicate that despite its immune modulatory function, the SNP is neither necessary nor sufficient to induce ECM and thus cannot account for parasite strain-specific differences in ECM phenotypes.

  • Computational fluid-structure interaction analysis of flapping uvula on aerodynamics and pharyngeal vibration in a pediatric airway
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - : Nature Publishing Group. - 2045-2322. ; 13:1, s. 2013-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The uvula flapping is one of the most distinctive features of snoring and is critical in affecting airway aerodynamics and vibrations. This study aimed to elucidate the mechanism of pharyngeal vibration and pressure fluctuation due to uvula flapping employing fluid-structure interaction simulations. The followings are the methodology part: we constructed an anatomically accurate pediatric pharynx model and put attention on the oropharynx region where the greatest level of upper airway compliance was reported to occur. The uvula was assumed to be a rigid body with specific flapping frequencies to guarantee proper boundary conditions with as little complexity as possible. The airway tissue was considered to have a uniform thickness. It was found that the flapping frequency had a more significant effect on the airway vibration than the flapping amplitude, as the flapping uvula influenced the pharyngeal aerodynamics by altering the jet flow from the mouth. Breathing only through the mouth could amplify the effect of flapping uvula on aerodynamic changes and result in more significant oropharynx vibration.

  • Evaluation of computational fluid dynamics models for predicting pediatric upper airway airflow characteristics
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Medical and Biological Engineering and Computing. - : Springer. - 0140-0118 .- 1741-0444. ; 61:1, s. 259-270
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has the potential for use as a clinical tool to predict the aerodynamics and respiratory function in the upper airway (UA) of children; however, careful selection of validated computational models is necessary. This study constructed a 3D model of the pediatric UA based on cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) imaging. The pediatric UA was 3D printed for pressure and velocity experiments, which were used as reference standards to validate the CFD simulation models. Static wall pressure and velocity distribution inside of the UA under inhale airflow rates from 0 to 266.67 mL/s were studied by CFD simulations based on the large eddy simulation (LES) model and four Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) models. Our results showed that the LES performed best for pressure prediction; however, it was much more time-consuming than the four RANS models. Among the RANS models, the Low Reynolds number (LRN) SST k-ω model had the best overall performance at a series of airflow rates. Central flow velocity determined by particle image velocimetry was 3.617 m/s, while velocities predicted by the LES, LRN SST k-ω, and k-ω models were 3.681, 3.532, and 3.439 m/s, respectively. All models predicted jet flow in the oropharynx. These results suggest that the above CFD models have acceptable accuracy for predicting pediatric UA aerodynamics and that the LRN SST k-ω model has the most potential for clinical application in pediatric respiratory studies.

  • Impact of palatopharyngeal sizes changing on pharyngeal airflow fluctuation and airway vibration in a pediatric airway
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of Biomechanics. - : Elsevier. - 0021-9290 .- 1873-2380. ; 168, s. 112111-112111
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Snoring is common in children and is associated with many adverse consequences. One must study the relationships between pharyngeal morphology and snoring physics to understand snoring progression. Although some model studies have provided fluid–structure interaction dynamic descriptions for the correlation between airway size and snoring physics, the descriptions still need to be further investigated in patient-specific airway models. Fluid-structure interaction studies using patient-specific airway structures complement the above model studies. Based on reported cephalometric measurement methods, this study quantified and preset the size of the palatopharynx airway in a patient-specific airway and investigated how the palatopharynx size affects the pharyngeal airflow fluctuation, soft palate vibration, and glossopharynx vibration with the help of a verified FSI method. The results showed that the stenosis anterior airway of the soft palate increased airway resistance and airway resistance fluctuations, which can lead to increased sleep effort and frequent snoring. Widening of the anterior airway can reduce airflow resistance and avoid obstructing the anterior airway by the soft palate vibration. The pharyngeal airflow resistance, mouth inflow proportion, and soft palate apex displacement have components at the same frequencies in all airway models, and the glossopharynx vibration and instantaneous inflow rate have components at the same frequencies, too. The mechanism of this same frequency fluctuation phenomenon can be explained by the fluid–structure interaction dynamics of an ideal coupled model consisting of a flexible plate model and a collapsible tube model. The results of this study demonstrate the potential of FSI in studying snoring physics and clarify to some degree the mechanism of airway morphology affecting airway vibration physics.

  • Impact of sleep posture and breathing pattern on soft palate flutter and pharynx vibration in a pediatric airway using fluid-structure interaction

    • Snoring is a common condition in the general population, and the management of snoring requires a better understanding of its mechanism through a fluid-structure interaction (FSI) perspective. Despite the recent popularity of numerical FSI techniques, outstanding challenges are accurately predicting airway deformation and its vibration during snoring due to complex airway morphology. In addition, there still needs to be more un-derstanding of snoring inhibition when lying on the side, and the possible effect of airflow rates, as well as nose or mouth-nose breathing, on snoring remains to be investigated. In this study, an FSI method verified against in vitro models was introduced to predict upper airway deformation and vibration. The technique was applied to predict airway aerodynamics, soft palate flutter, and airway vibration in four sleep postures (supine, left/right lying, and sitting positions) and four breathing patterns (mouth-nose, nose, mouth, and unilateral nose breathing). It was found that, at given elastic properties of soft tissues, the evaluated flutter frequency of 19.8 Hz in inspiration was in good agreement with the reported frequency of snoring sound in literature. Reduction in flutter and vibrations due to the mouth-nose airflow proportion changes were also noticed when having side-lying and sitting positions. Breathing through the mouth results in larger airway deformation than breathing through the nose or mouth-nose. These results collectively demonstrate the potential of FSI for studying the physics of airway vibration and clarify to some degree the reason for snoring inhibition during sleep postures and breathing patterns.

  • Aerodynamic characteristics in upper airways among orthodontic patients and its association with adenoid nasopharyngeal ratios in lateral cephalograms
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: BMC Medical Imaging. - : BioMed Central. - 1471-2342. ; 21:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background Adenoid hypertrophy among orthodontic patients may be detected in lateral cephalograms. The study investigates the aerodynamic characteristics within the upper airway (UA) by means of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation. Furthermore, airflow features are compared between subgroups according to the adenoidal nasopharyngeal (AN) ratios. Methods This retrospective study included thirty-five patients aged 9-15 years having both lateral cephalogram and cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) imaging that covered the UA region. The cases were divided into two subgroups according to the AN ratios measured on the lateral cephalograms: Group 1 with an AN ratio < 0.6 and Group 2 with an AN ratio >= 0.6. Based on the CBCT images, segmented UA models were created and the aerodynamic characteristics at inspiration and expiration were simulated by the CFD method for the two groups. The studied aerodynamic parameters were pressure drop (Delta P), maximum midsagittal velocity (V-ms), maximum wall shear stress (P-ws), and minimum wall static pressure (P-w). Results The maximum V-ms exhibits nearly 30% increases in Group 2 at both inspiration (p = 0.013) and expiration (p = 0.045) compared to Group 1. For the other aerodynamic parameters such as Delta P, the maximum P-ws, and minimum P-w, no significant difference is found between the two groups. Conclusions The maximum V-ms seems to be the most sensitive aerodynamic parameter for the groups of cases. An AN ratio of more than 0.6 measured on a lateral cephalogram may associate with a noticeably increased maximum V-ms, which could assist clinicians in estimating the airflow features in the UA.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BackgroundThe effect of rapid maxillary expansion (RME) on the upper airway (UA) has been studied earlier but without a consistent conclusion. This study aims to evaluate the outcome of RME on the UA function in terms of aerodynamic characteristics by applying a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation.MethodsThis retrospective cohort study consists of seventeen cases with two consecutive CBCT scans obtained before (T0) and after (T1) RME. Patients were divided into two groups with respect to patency of the nasopharyngeal airway as expressed in the adenoidal nasopharyngeal ratio (AN): group 1 was comprised of patients with an AN ratio<0.6 and group 2 encompassing those with an AN ratio0.6. CFD simulation at inspiration and expiration were performed based on the three-dimensional (3D) models of the UA segmented from the CBCT images. The aerodynamic characteristics in terms of pressure drop (Delta P), maximum midsagittal velocity (V-ms), and maximum wall shear stress (P-ws) were compared by paired t-test and Wilcoxon test according to the normality test at T0 and T1.ResultsThe aerodynamic characteristics in UA revealed no statistically significant difference after RME. The maximum V-ms (m/s) decreased from 2.79 to 2.28 at expiration after RME (P=0.057).ConclusionThe aerodynamic characteristics were not significantly changed after RME. Further CFD studies with more cases are warranted.

    • Due to the important hydrological and meteorological significance, the performance of different kinds of precipitation products for the Tibetan Plateau (TP) has been evaluated in previous studies. However, the performance of the products on a high spatial-temporal scale has not been clearly shown. Based on the Chinese Meteorological Administration (CMA) ground rain gauge observations during 2017-2018 over the TP, this paper analyzes the multi-scale performance of four satellite-based datasets (IMERG_Uncal, IMERG_Cal, GSMaP_MVK, and GSMaP_Gauge), two reanalysis datasets (ERA5 and ERA5-L), and one multi-source merged dataset (CMFD) for different precipitation intensities with a special attention to the characterization of spatiotemporal variability of heavy precipitation. Firstly, this study examines how the quality of precipitation products varies with time scale and precipitation intensity. CMFD generally shows the best quality and has the most stable quality at all temporal scales. Satellite products perform better in summer while reanalysis products show better results in cold seasons. Another significant issue is the impact of gauge-based calibration. GSMaP_Gauge with daily-scale gauge calibration is often considered to outperform other products. However, our study finds that GSMaP_Gauge is problematic at smaller spatiotemporal scales, especially in capturing heavy precipitation. The long-term performance of multi spatiotemporal scale comparison of different precipitation products is the focus of this study, which can help with their application and improvement.

  • Evolutionary History, Genomic Adaptation to Toxic Diet, and Extinction of the Carolina Parakeet
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Current Biology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0960-9822 .- 1879-0445. ; 30:1, s. 108-114
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As the only endemic neotropical parrot to have recently lived in the northern hemisphere, the Carolina parakeet (Conuropsis carolinensis) was an iconic North American bird. The last surviving specimen died in the Cincinnati Zoo in 1918 [1]. The cause of its extinction remains contentious: besides excessive mortality associated to habitat destruction and active hunting, their survival could have been negatively affected by its range having become increasingly patchy [2] or by the exposure to poultry pathogens [3, 4]. In addition, the Carolina parakeet showed a pre-dilection for cockleburs, an herbaceousplant that contains a powerful toxin, carboxyatractyloside, or CAT [5], which did not seem to affect them but made the birds notoriously toxic to most predators [3]. To explore the demographic history of this bird, we generated the complete genomic sequence of a preserved specimen held in a private collection in Espinelves (Girona, Spain), as well as of a close extant relative, Aratinga solstitialis. We identified two non-synonymous genetic changes in two highly conserved proteins known to interact with CAT that could underlie a specific dietary adaptation to this toxin. Our genomic analyses did not reveal evidence of a dramatic past demographic decline in the Carolina parakeet; also, its genome did not exhibit the long runs of homozygosity that are signals of recent inbreeding and are typically found in endangered species. As such, our results suggest its extinction was an abrupt process and thus likely solely attributable to human causes.

  • Tethered Small-Molecule Acceptors Simultaneously Enhance the Efficiency and Stability of Polymer Solar Cells

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • For polymer solar cells (PSCs), the mixture of polymer donors and small-molecule acceptors (SMAs) is fine-tuned to realize a favorable kinetically trapped morphology and thus a commercially viable device efficiency. However, the thermodynamic relaxation of the mixed domains within the blend raises concerns related to the long-term operational stability of the devices, especially in the record-holding Y-series SMAs. Here, a new class of dimeric Y6-based SMAs tethered with differential flexible spacers is reported to regulate their aggregation and relaxation behavior. In their polymer blends with PM6, it is found that they favor an improved structural order relative to that of Y6 counterpart. Most importantly, the tethered SMAs show large glass transition temperatures to suppress the thermodynamic relaxation in mixed domains. For the high-performing dimeric blend, an unprecedented open circuit voltage of 0.87 V is realized with a conversion efficiency of 17.85%, while those of regular Y6-base devices only reach 0.84 V and 16.93%, respectively. Most importantly, the dimer-based device possesses substantially reduced burn-in efficiency loss, retaining more than 80% of the initial efficiency after operating at the maximum power point under continuous illumination for 700 h. The tethering approach provides a new direction to develop PSCs with high efficiency and excellent operating stability.

    • Compositional heterogeneity is commonly observed in mixed bromide/iodide perovskite photoabsorbers, typically with minimal effects on charge carrier recombination and photovoltaic performance. Consistently, it has so far received very limited attention in bromide/chloride-mixed perovskites, which hold particular significance for blue light-emitting diodes. Here, we uncover that even a minor degree of localized halide heterogeneity leads to severe non-radiative losses in mixed bromide/chloride blue perovskite emitters, presenting a stark contrast to general observations in photovoltaics. We not only provide a visualization of the heterogeneity landscape spanning from micro-to sub-microscale but also identify that this issue mainly arises from the initially formed chloride-rich clusters during perovskite nucleation. Our work sheds light on a long-term neglected factor impeding the advancement of blue light-emitting diodes using mixed halide perovskites and provides a practical strategy to mitigate this issue.

  • Unraveling Enyne Bonding via Dehydrogenation-Hydrogenation Processes in On-Surface Synthesis with Terminal Alkynes
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Advanced Materials Interfaces. - : WILEY. - 2196-7350.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • On-surface reactions of terminal alkynes in ultrahigh vacuum have attracted widespread attention due to their high technological promise. However, employing different precursors and substrate materials often intricate reaction schemes appear far from being well-understood. Thus, recent investigations of alkyne coupling on noble metal surfaces suggest non-dehydrogenative scenarios, contradicting earlier reports. Herein, the study employs noncontact atomic force microscopy (nc-AFM) with high spatial resolution to conclusively characterize exemplary alkyne coupling products. Contrary to initial interpretations proposing dehydrogenative homocoupling on Ag(111), bond-resolved AFM imaging reveals the expression of enyne motifs. Based on complementary, extensive density functional theory calculations, the pertaining reaction mechanisms are explored. It is proposed that enyne formation initiates with a direct carbon-carbon coupling between two alkyne groups, followed by surface-assisted dehydrogenation-hydrogenation processes. Thereby consecutive steps of atomic hydrogen cleavage, surface migration and recombination to a different carbon atom enable bridging via carbon-carbon double bonding. The new results shed light on subtle, but crucial surface-mediated hydrogen transfer processes involved in the chemical bond formation, which are suggested to be of general relevance in on-surface synthesis. Terminal alkyne coupling on Ag(111) in ultrahigh vacuum is conclusively examined by bond-resolved atomic force microscopy and density functional theory modeling. The prevailing bonding motif is the enyne moiety, originating from a distinct surface-mediated dehydrogenation-hydrogenation reaction pathway. The findings highlight the important role of hydrogen transfer in the course of on-surface synthesis procedures. image

  • Evolution of spin excitations from bulk to monolayer FeSe
  • 2021

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In ultrathin films of FeSe grown on SrTiO (FeSe/STO), the superconducting transition temperature T is increased by almost an order of magnitude, raising questions on the pairing mechanism. As in other superconductors, antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations have been proposed to mediate SC making it essential to study the evolution of the spin dynamics of FeSe from the bulk to the ultrathin limit. Here, we investigate the spin excitations in bulk and monolayer FeSe/STO using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) and quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) calculations. Despite the absence of long-range magnetic order, bulk FeSe displays dispersive magnetic excitations reminiscent of other Fe-pnictides. Conversely, the spin excitations in FeSe/STO are gapped, dispersionless, and significantly hardened relative to its bulk counterpart. By comparing our RIXS results with simulations of a bilayer Hubbard model, we connect the evolution of the spin excitations to the Fermiology of the two systems revealing a remarkable reconfiguration of spin excitations in FeSe/STO, essential to understand the role of spin fluctuations in the pairing mechanism.

  • Chlorophyll-a concentrations in 82 large alpine lakes on the Tibetan Plateau during 2003-2017: temporal-spatial variations and influencing factors

  • Ingår i: International Journal of Digital Earth. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1753-8947 .- 1753-8955. ; 14:6, s. 714-735
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As essential parts of the unique ecosystem of Tibetan Plateau (TP), the sizes and associated physical properties of alpine lakes have long been investigated. However, little is known about one of the most critical biogeochemical properties, i.e. the Chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentrations. Here, for the first time, we presented a comprehensive investigation of the temporal-spatial variations in Chl-a in 82 lakes (>50 km(2)) across the entire TP region, based on MODIS observations in the period of 2003-2017. The results showed that the 82 lakes exhibited an average long-term mean Chl-a of 3.3 +/- 4.3 mg m(-3), with high Chl-a lakes concentrated in the eastern and southern inner TP basin and northeastern parts of the TP. An interannual trend analysis revealed that lakes exhibiting (significantly) decreasing Chl-a trends and (significantly) increasing Chl-a trends were comparable in numbers but differed in distribution patterns. A correlation analysis indicated that at least 70% of the interannual variability in Chl-a values of lakes was significantly correlated with one of the four environmental factors (wind speed, ice cover duration, lake water surface temperature and surface runoff) and lake size. In addition, glacier meltwater tended to reduce lake Chl-a while salinity levels showed minor influences.

  • Divergent and Changing Importance of Glaciers and Snow as Natural Water Reservoirs in the Eastern and Southern Tibetan Plateau
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Geophysical Research-Atmospheres. - : American Geophysical Union (AGU). - 2169-897X .- 2169-8996. ; 127:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Glaciers and snow are natural water reservoirs in the Tibetan Plateau (TP), affecting ecosystems, water and food security, and more than one billion downstream people. Meltwater volumes are traditionally estimated using the degree-day concept considering only air temperature, which cannot consider the influence from downward solar and longwave radiation, humidity, wind and resultant turbulent heat fluxes. Here, we used a physically based energy budget approach considering the full energy balance in seven large river basins in the eastern and southern TP. For 1982-2011, the estimated average glacier melt was 0.32 +/- 0.007 m water equivalent/yr with large spatial variability. Air temperature, downward longwave radiation, humidity, and wind speed influenced the overall glacier melt trend, and glacier melt accelerated with a rate of 0.42 mm/yr. Yet, downward shortwave radiation played an additional role in influencing the glacier melt rate fluctuation. On average, snow and glacier melt contributed 17.6% of annual river discharge during 1982-2011, including 10.0% from snow and 7.6% from glaciers. The highest and lowest relative melt contributions were in the Yarlung Tsangpo and Yalong Rivers, respectively. Mainly due to decreasing snow melt, glacier and snow melt contributions to discharge would decrease to 11.9% during 2021-2050 under the extreme climate scenario (RCP8.5), and the greatest change in the relative contributions would occur in the Upper Nu River (-9.2%). These findings indicate the divergent and changing importance of glaciers and snow as natural water reservoirs, potentially affecting socioeconomic development and adaptation to climate change in South, Southeast, and East Asia.

  • Economic growth dominates rising potential flood risk in the Yangtze River and benefits of raising dikes from 1991 to 2015
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Environmental Research Letters. - : IOP Publishing. - 1748-9318 .- 1748-9326. ; 17:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Flooding in the Yangtze River Basin could severely damage socio-economic development, river ecosystems, food security, hydropower production and transportation in China. The Yangtze River Basin accounts for approximately 30% of China's gross domestic product (GDP) and is an engine for the country's rapid economic growth. One commonly held belief is that climate change has intensified extreme flood events, leading to increasing economic damage in the Yangtze River. Here, we quantitatively attributed economic exposure to climate change (i.e. climate-induced changes in weather-related events) and GDP growth, and assessed benefits, i.e. the reduction in economic exposure, from flood defence dikes of varying heights. To do this, we developed a framework by combing a large scale hydrological model, a hydraulic model, and long-term GDP data. We find that climate-induced changes in flood inundation area and resulted economic exposure were decreasing overall, whereas GDP growth drove the increases of potential economic exposure to floods. We also reveal that the basin average flood defence dikes should be at least approximately 3.5 m high to achieve an about ten-year average flood occurrence. Our results have significant policy and socioeconomic development implications. © 2022 The Author(s). Published by IOP Publishing Ltd.

  • Blueshifting the Absorption of a Small -Molecule Donor and Using it as the Third Component to Achieve High-Efficiency Ternary Organic Solar Cells
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Solar RRL. - : WILEY-V C H VERLAG GMBH. - 2367-198X. ; 6:9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Adding a small-molecule donor (SMD) to state-of-the-art nonfullerene organic solar cells (OSCs) is demonstrated as a useful strategy to construct ternary organic solar cells, as SMDs typically have high crystallinity and can tune charge transport properties of OSCs. However, the absorption of most SMDs overlaps with typical donor polymers (e.g., PM6), which is against the general guidelines of adopting materials with complementary absorption in ternary OSCs. Herein, the absorption of state-of-art SMDs (BTR-CI) by linking the beta position of the outer thiophene to the alpha position of the inner thiophene unit is intentionally blueshifted. The resulting molecule beta-S1 shows a maximum absorption peak at 505 nm in the film state, which exhibits wider bandgap and shows complementary absorption with the host system (PM6:Y6). The corresponding ternary OSCs with 20%wt beta-S1 show significantly enhanced efficiency from 16.2% to 17.1% due to the increased short-circuit current (J(sc)) and improved fill factor (FF). Herein, an effective strategy to design SMDs with both wider bandgaps and higher crystallinity for high-performance ternary OSCs is presented.

  • Acidochromic organic photovoltaic integrated device
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Chemical Engineering Journal. - : Elsevier BV. - 1385-8947. ; 452
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Tremendous efforts have been devoted to boosting the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of organic solar cells (OSCs) via the introduction of cathode interlayers (CILs). However, CIL materials have limited diversity and the development of multifunctional devices is largely neglected. Herein, an acidochromic organic photovoltaic integrated device is firstly proposed by introducing an acid-sensitive stimulating-reaction organic molecule as both the CIL of OSCs and the sensor of monitoring environmental acidity. The oxazolidine unit of acidochromic molecule can form a ring-opening structure after acid treatment, resulting in the remarkable color change with the direct reflection of pH value of ecological environment. The additive-free PM6:Y6 OSCs using the acidochromic molecule as the CIL achieve an excellent PCE of above 15.29 %, which is 47 % higher than that of the control device. The PCE can even maintain above 92 % after treating CIL with various strong acids (pH = 1). Moreover, the color of acidified films and the degraded performance of acidified OSCs can be easily restored by alkaline treatment. The successful application of CIL in other highly efficient photovoltaic systems proves its good universality. This work triggers the promising application of acidochromic molecules in solar cells as CIL with the additional function of recognition of acid environment.

  • Association of accelerometer-derived circadian abnormalities and genetic risk with incidence of atrial fibrillation
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: npj Digital Medicine. - : Springer Nature. - 2398-6352. ; 6:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Evidence suggests potential links between circadian rhythm and atrial fibrillation (AF). However, whether circadian disruption can predict the onset of AF in the general population remains largely unknown. We aim to investigate the association of accelerometer-measured circadian rest-activity rhythm (CRAR, the most prominent circadian rhythm in humans) with the risk of AF, and examine joint associations and potential interactions of CRAR and genetic susceptibility with AF incidence. We include 62,927 white British participants of UK Biobank without AF at baseline. CRAR characteristics, including amplitude (strength), acrophase (timing of peak activity), pseudo-F (robustness), and mesor (height), are derived by applying an extended cosine model. Genetic risk is assessed with polygenic risk scores. The outcome is the incidence of AF. During a median follow-up of 6.16 years, 1920 participants developed AF. Low amplitude [hazard ratio (HR): 1.41, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.25-1.58], delayed acrophase (HR: 1.24, 95% CI: 1.10-1.39), and low mesor (HR: 1.36, 95% CI: 1.21-1.52), but not low pseudo-F, are significantly associated with a higher risk of AF. No significant interactions between CRAR characteristics and genetic risk are observed. Joint association analyses reveal that participants with unfavourable CRAR characteristics and high genetic risk yield the highest risk of incident AF. These associations are robust after controlling for multiple testing and in a series of sensitivity analyses. Accelerometer-measured CRAR abnormalities, characterized by decreased strength and height, and later timing of peak activity of circadian rhythm, are associated with a higher risk of AF in the general population.

  • Stable subspace dimension reduced MUSIC for blade tip timing
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Sound and Vibration. - : Elsevier. - 0022-460X .- 1095-8568. ; 545
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Multiple signal classification (MUSIC) is a parameter extraction method for blade tip timing to suppress the under-sampled problem. Its faster version, subspace dimension reduced MUSIC (SDR-MUSIC), has been proposed, which uses a single noise vector instead of the whole noise subspace to reduce computational complexity. However, the principle of random noise vector selection leads to instability in frequency identification. Therefore, we replace the random vector with the min-norm vector to obtain a stable SDR-MUSIC (SSDR-MUSIC). The superiority of the min-norm vector can be mathematically proven by the location of the zeros of the polynomial. Simulated and experimental tests indicate that SSDR-MUSIC gains stability when the min-norm vector is used while maintaining computational efficiency.

  • Fluorinated End Group Enables High-Performance All-Polymer Solar Cells with Near-Infrared Absorption and Enhanced Device Efficiency over 14%
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Advanced Energy Materials. - : WILEY-V C H VERLAG GMBH. - 1614-6832 .- 1614-6840. ; 11:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Fluorination of end groups has been a great success in developing efficient small molecule acceptors. However, this strategy has not been applied to the development of polymer acceptors. Here, a dihalogenated end group modified by fluorine and bromine atoms simultaneously, namely IC-FBr, is first developed, then employed to construct a new polymer acceptor (named PYF-T) for all-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs). In comparison with its non-fluorinated counterpart (PY-T), PYF-T exhibits stronger and red-shifted absorption spectra, stronger molecular packing and higher electron mobility. Meanwhile, the fluorination on the end groups down-shifts the energy levels of PYF-T, which matches better with the donor polymer PM6, leading to efficient charge transfer and small voltage loss. As a result, an all-PSC based on PM6:PYF-T yields a higher power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 14.1% than that of PM6:PY-T (11.1%), which is among the highest values for all-PSCs reported to date. This work demonstrates the effectiveness of fluorination of end-groups in designing high-performance polymer acceptors, which paves the way toward developing more efficient and stable all-PSCs.

  • Tethered Small-Molecule Acceptor Refines Hierarchical Morphology in Ternary Polymer Solar Cells: Enhanced Stability and 19% Efficiency
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Advanced Materials. - : WILEY-V C H VERLAG GMBH. - 0935-9648 .- 1521-4095.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Polymer solar cells (PSCs) are promising for efficient solar energy conversion, but achieving high efficiency and device longevity within a bulk-heterojunction (BHJ) structure remains a challenge. Traditional small-molecule acceptors (SMAs) in the BHJ blend show thermodynamic instability affecting the morphology. In contrast, tethered SMAs exhibit higher glass transition temperatures, mitigating these concerns. Yet, they might not integrate well with polymer donors, causing pronounced phase separation and overpurification of mixed domains. Herein, a novel ternary device is introduced that uses DY-P2EH, a tethered dimeric SMA with conjugated side-chains as host acceptor, and BTP-ec9, a monomeric SMA as secondary acceptor, which respectively possess hypomiscibility and hypermiscibility with the polymer donor PM6. This unique combination affords a parallel-connected ternary BHJ blend, leading to a hierarchical and stable morphology. The ternary device achieves a remarkable fill factor of 80.61% and an impressive power conversion efficiency of 19.09%. Furthermore, the ternary device exhibits exceptional stability, retaining over 85% of its initial efficiency even after enduring 1100 h of thermal stress at 85 degrees C. These findings highlight the potential advantage of tethered SMAs in the design of ternary devices with a refined hierarchical structure for more efficient and durable solar energy conversion technologies. A ternary-device design is proposed that fully utilizes the individual thermodynamic properties of both dimeric acceptor and monomeric acceptor. The high Tg value of dimeric acceptor significantly impedes the molecular movement of monomeric acceptor, while hypermiscible properties of monomeric acceptor promote percolation of the mixed domain for enhancing charge dynamics.image
