  • Parochial education in a global world? Teaching history and civics in Lebanon
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Nordidactica. - Karlstad : CSD Karlstad. - 2000-9879. ; 3:1, s. 57-79
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This exploratory article is based on a research project which runs from 2011 to 2013 that examines how global processes are expressed in educational policies and pedagogical texts in Lebanon, Sweden and Turkey by focusing on school subjects like civics, history, geography, and religion. In this text we discuss the development of education in Lebanon, the development of history and civics after the civil war, and on opinions about these school subjects in order to make a preliminary analysis of how the future Lebanese citizen is depicted in policies, curricula, and textbooks. Lebanon is interesting because of its unique education system in which foreign international institutions rather than national ones have the task of preparing individuals for a globalized world. Material for the study were collected from a sample of curricula used in private and public or national schools for history and civics/citizenship education in grade 8 as well as interviews and conference proceedings and conversations with activists, teachers and principals. We also reviewed findings of relevant empirical studies conducted in Lebanon. Our data collection was guided by three questions: how is the right citizen depicted in the Lebanese material? How is the relationship between national and global perspectives treated in guidance documents and pedagogical texts? What civic rights and obligations are given attention and what individuals are included/ excluded? Our preliminary findings imply that there is no consensus on the importance of teaching a unified history and civics book and subjects in Lebanon. Other findings indicate that private and international schools have a greater impact than national schools on preparing Lebanese students as future citizens.

  • Multiculturalism in Swedish Style: shifts and sediments in educational policies and textbooks
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Policy Futures in Education. - : Symposium Journals. - 1478-2103. ; 12:1, s. 56-66
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the almost two decades that have passed since the Swedish parliament declared that Sweden is a multicultural society, debates about immigrants, about multiculturalism and about different ways of being a citizen have raged. So far there has been no stepping away from the declaration. In the rhetorical arena multiculturalism is still a word with positive connotations, but in the arena of political praxis the situation is different. Inequalities in access to social services, not least education, have increased dramatically, and these inequalities are typically correlated to immigrant background and place of residence. This article focuses on policy documents concerned with multiculturalism in Swedish education and textbooks. First of all, the analysis shows that although multiculturalism is inscribed in steering documents, the concept is never clearly defined but instead remains vague and malleable. Second, while the experiences of pupils with an immigrant background are typically said to bring variety to the classrooms and thus are useful for pedagogical purposes, textbooks seldom acknowledge that Sweden today is, indeed, a multicultural society.

  • Cultural expertise in Sweden : A history of its use
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Laws. - : MDPI AG. - 2075-471X. ; 8:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper is a case study of the use of cultural experts, broadly defined as including mediators and academicians with a variety of backgrounds, in Sweden. It draws on data collected through qualitative interviews with cultural experts, by following court cases through legal documents, mass media and other printed material, and by my own experience as a cultural expert. The paper provides a context to the potential application of the concept of cultural expertise regarding the appointment of such experts by lawyers, prosecutors and courts. It analyzes cases concerning the Sami, the Roma and recent immigrants from Africa and Asia. The Sami cases revolve around conflicts with the Swedish state over rights and ownership. The Roma cases revolve around questions of ethnic discrimination. Cases of immigrants from outside Europe consist of individual criminal cases and asylum. I argue that Swedish ideas—and ideals—of sameness and equality have had an impact on the legal cases that I discuss in this paper. While the legal issues in each of these cases differ, the paper argues that they demonstrate a similarity in how Swedish-majority society manages and even creates cultural differences. I conclude by showing the ways culture, rights, and obligations are understood in courts reflect mainstream trends of Swedish society and suggest the need for cultural expertise in the form of interdisciplinary collaboration.

  • Den goda familjen och den goda familjerätten : debatter om lag och moral i det mångkulturella Europa
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Socialvetenskaplig tidskrift. - Göteborg : Förbundet för forskning i socialt arbete (FORSA). - 1104-1420 .- 2003-5624. ; 16:3-4, s. 300-319
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract

  • 'We are Christians and we are equal citizens' perspectives on particularity and pluralism in contemporary Syria
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Islam and Christian-Muslim Relations. - Birmingham : Routledge. - 0959-6410 .- 1469-9311. ; 23:1, s. 79-93
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Relations between Muslims and Christians in Syria are as heterogeneous and complex as the country itself. They differ from region to region, from city to city and from village to village. They are also linked to class and urban-rural divisions. It can be argued that it is meaningless to try to categorize relationships between Christians and Muslims in Syria in terms of 'Christian' and 'Muslim'. It is a country where all citizens are constitutionally equal before the law and where the co-existence of Christians and Muslims is lauded officially and - generally speaking - among citizens at large in everyday life. But in personal status law Muslims and Christians are firmly categorized, and there is no escape from the way law divides and categorizes individuals. In these categorizations and in the practice of law, gender is crucial. In this article the complexity and fluidity of relations between Christians and Muslims in Syria is explored, as well as the plurilegal Syrian personal status law, which is based on a mandatory religious affiliation. The article shows how gender and religion interact to create an ambiguous situation of 'same but different' for Syria's Christian citizens.

  • Transnationella rum : diaspora, migration och gränsöverskridande relationer
  • 2007. - 1
