  • Formation of respectable citizens : precarious work and uncertain futures in a f-cked up world
  • 2016
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Drawing on research on gender and class and especially on the work of Beverly Skeggs we analyse adult educational student’s stories of their future occupations and future lives. We argue that these narratives of the future are both gendered and class specific. The results shows that there are echoes from the past, where the working class focused on being diligent, caring, modest and respectable. There is also a gender difference among the working class students, where women picture their future occupations in relation to having children and a family. For the working class female students their future occupations are further often connected to working with people, i.e. as care workers, teachers or for instance physiotherapist – i.e. work that involve caring in one way or another. Different results are seen in the analysis of middle class students that are more likely to focus on their individual self-realisation, where the futures are grander and not so much connected to a specific time and space. Another important result is that the working class students are modest in the narratives of their future occupations. Imagined occupations would mean a certain amount of social mobility, but rather modest ones.

  • Longing to belong : Stories of (non)belonging in multi-ethnic Sweden
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Nordic Journal of Migration Research. - : De Gruyter Open. - 1799-649X. ; 7:4, s. 197-204
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this article is to contribute to an understanding of contemporary processes of negotiations concerning belonging and non-belonging to the Swedish social community. Taking on a theoretical approach on belonging inspired by Yuval-Davis and Jacobsen, the article analyses three individual stories of women who have migrated to Sweden. Out of this analysis, focusing on how these women claim their belonging to a Swedish social community at the same time as they in different ways are denied such belonging by others, we may conclude that although each of the stories told is unique and articulates an individual experience, there are striking similarities in how their claims of belonging, with its related implications for belonging, are not acknowledged by others. In a way, these individual stories tell us something about some of the crucial challenges regarding belonging in contemporary multi-ethnic Sweden, as well as Europe.

    • Paradoxes of citizen formation: Citizenship positioning in stories about belonging in an era of migrationThis article analyzes the formation of citizenship in today’s multi-ethnic Sweden with a particular focus on how migration renders visible existing citizenship ideals, defined in terms of similarity and difference on the basis of ethno-cultural background. Analysing three individual stories of women who have migrated to Sweden, with different biographies and stories of how they ended up in Sweden, the article focuses on negotiations of the boundaries and contents of citizenship in multi-ethnic Sweden. The point of departure for the analysis is a post-structuralist and discursive approach. In all, the stories address the crucial question of who should be included into the social community and on what conditions – and who should be left out? This particular question is also at the very centre of the political debate in today’s Europe. On the one hand, there are strong arguments about the ’death of multiculturalism’ and demands for new forms of ethno-culturally graduated citizenship – also in Sweden. On the other hand, in Sweden as well as in other European countries, claims for the development of a new and more inclusive societal community have been raised, expanding the rights of citizens to accommodating also those who have been excluded from them.

  • To belong or not to belong : negotiating citizenship in an age of migration
  • 2016
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • 2015. More than a million people are seeking refuge in Europe. Over water or over land, children as well as adults are fleeing from war, persecution and poverty. Thousands of them disappear without a trace or drown beneath the waves. Most of the refugees come from the war-torn Syria (International Organisation for Migration 2015). Throughout the member states of the European Union, exceptional policy measures are taken in order to handle the so-called ‘refugee crisis’ – intensified border control, the introduction of ID checks at specific checkpoints as well as within the borders of a country and restrictive rules for the reception of asylum seekers. This precarious situation in Europe addresses a number of crucial questions about the state of citizenship and belonging in contemporary Europe – in an age of large-scale international migration. In an era of international migration established conceptions of citizenship, of who the citizen is or should be, are challenged. International migration highlights some of the fundamental issues of citizenship: which characteristics, abilities or values should the citizen have and how are the relationships between the citizen and society arranged? In the context of international migration certain individuals are seen as ‘naturally’ belonging to the national community they inhabit, guaranteeing a set of rights, while others are seen as not belonging. The question, however, is: Who are included in the societal community, who are excluded, and what conditions are used to decide? This article analyses the formation of citizenship in today’s multi-ethnic Sweden with a particular focus on how migration renders visible existing citizenship ideals, defined in terms of similarity and difference on the basis of ethno-cultural background. Analysing three individual stories of women who have migrated to Sweden, with different biographies, the article focuses on negotiations of the boundaries and contents of citizenship in multi-ethnic Sweden. • Senior alert: A quality registry to support a standardized, structured, and systematic preventive care process for older adults
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Quality Management in Health Care. - 1063-8628 .- 1550-5154. ; 24:2, s. 96-101
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The average life expectancy and the proportion of the elderly in the Western countries are increasing. The care processes used for the elderly are known to differ between the care providers in Sweden. Accordingly, the need to develop a system to support the processes in order to attain a standardized, structured, and systematic approach to improve preventive care processes for the elderly has been called for. The County Council of Jönköping developed a national Web-based quality registry, Senior Alert, with a focus on the following areas: falls, pressure ulcers, malnutrition, and oral health. The patients are evaluated using validated risk assessment instruments, and the care is planned, executed, evaluated. The registry supports the users to work with preventive care systematically and in a standardized way and provides feedback to the care providers on their preventive care processes. The registry helps the caregivers fulfill the preventive care according to the best available clinical knowledge and practice. The registry also provides the government and health care politicians with data for setting aims for elderly care. The registry is used in 90% of the municipalities and county councils throughout the country. The total number of risk assessments completed from 2009 to 2014 exceeded 1 000 000.

  • Individualisation in Swedish adult education and the shaping of neo-liberal subjectivities
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Educational Research. - : Routledge. - 0031-3831 .- 1470-1170. ; 62:3, s. 461-473
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article we have analysed the ways a discourse on individualisation is taking shape within adult education in Sweden, how it operates, and what effects it has in terms of shaping student subjectivity. Drawing on a post-structural theorisation we analyse interviews with teachers and students in municipal adult education (MAE) and folk high schools (FHS). The analysis illustrates how both institutions contribute to the shaping of individualised subjectivities, although differently. At the end, a general question is raised about what happens with the democratic function of adult education in general, when a discourse on individualisation operates in the ways described, and more specifically, asks what is happening to FHS as an educational practice, that upholds its self-image as a last bastion of a collective notion of learning and subjectivity, and nurturing an educational practice of learning democracy?

  • Individualisering genom det kollektiva i svensk folkhögskola
  • 2015
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim of this paper presentation is to identify how the principles of democracy and the market are played out in Swedish adult education. More specifically, we focus on how collective and individually oriented notions of what it means to be a citizen, shape student subjectivity. By focusing on both formal adult education (municipal adult education) and non-formal adult education (folk high schools) we wish to illustrate how these principles are mobilized differently, thus shaping different kinds of citizen subjectivities. Drawing on a post structural theorization inspired by the work of Michel Foucault, we analyse interviews with students and teachers at one school for municipal adult education, as well as one folk high school. Our analysis illustrates how an individually oriented citizen is shaped through discourses mobilized in both settings. However, in the folk highs school, individualization is shaped through discourses on collectivization. We argue that such shaping are in line with neoliberal forms of governance.

  • Wave Energy Research at Uppsala University and The Lysekil Research Site, Sweden : A Status Update
  • 2015
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper provides a summarized status update ofthe Lysekil wave power project. The Lysekil project is coordinatedby the Div. of Electricity, Uppsala University since 2002, with theobjective to develop full-scale wave power converters (WEC). Theconcept is based on a linear synchronous generator (anchored tothe seabed) driven by a heaving point absorber. This WEC has nogearbox or other mechanical or hydraulic conversion systems, resulting in a simpler and robust power plant. Since 2006, 12 suchWECs have been build and tested at the research site located atthe west coast of Sweden. The last update includes a new andextended project permit, deployment of a new marine substation, tests of several concepts of heaving buoys, grid connection, improved measuring station, improved modelling of wave powerfarms, implementation of remote operated vehicles forunderwater cable connection, and comprehensive environmentalmonitoring studies.

  • Beyond Magic Numbers: Atomic Scale Equilibrium Nanoparticle Shapes for Any Size
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Nano Letters. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1530-6992 .- 1530-6984. ; 17:9, s. 5775-5781
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the pursuit of complete control over morphology in nanoparticle synthesis, knowledge of the thermodynamic equilibrium shapes is a key ingredient. While approaches exist to determine the equilibrium shape in the large size limit (?10-20 nm) as well as for very small particles (?2 nm), the experimentally increasingly important intermediate size regime has largely remained elusive. Here, we present an algorithm, based on atomistic simulations in a constrained thermodynamic ensemble, that efficiently predicts equilibrium shapes for any number of atoms in the range from a few tens to many thousands of atoms. We apply the algorithm to Cu, Ag, Au, and Pd particles with diameters between approximately 1 and 7 nm and reveal an energy landscape that is more intricate than previously suggested. The thus obtained particle type distributions demonstrate that the transition from icosahedral particles to decahedral and further into truncated octahedral particles occurs only very gradually, which has implications for the interpretation of experimental data. The approach presented here is extensible to alloys and can in principle also be adapted to represent different chemical environments.

  • Structure and chemical ordering in metallic nanoparticles from atomic scale modeling
  • 2019
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In the last decades, a wide range of attractive properties have put metallic nanoparticles in the spotlight. These properties, often related to optical response and catalytic performance, are to a large extent dependent on structure and chemical ordering, that is, the distribution of elements in the nanoparticle. To better understand and predict the behavior of such particles, a thorough understanding of these parameters is essential. This thesis investigates structure and chemical ordering in metal nanoparticles using atomistic modeling based on molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo simulations with embedded atom method potentials. The thesis describes frequently occurring nanoparticle structures and discusses the importance for an atomistic perspective in relation to the existence of magic and non-magic numbers in particles with different shapes. Further, alloy thermodynamics and key differences and similarities between macroscopic and microscopic systems are reviewed from a statistical mechanics perspective. The thesis highlights the importance for comprehensive investigations of the size and composition parameters to obtain a coherent picture. In particular, it is shown how recognition of polydisperse nanoparticle ensembles is crucial to predict the distribution of nanoparticle shapes in thermodynamic equilibrium and how the distribution of elements in an alloy nanoparticle is intimately connected to the underlying structure.

  • Understanding Chemical Ordering in Bimetallic Nanoparticles from Atomic-Scale Simulations: The Competition between Bulk, Surface, and Strain
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physical Chemistry C. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1932-7447 .- 1932-7455. ; 122:49, s. 28439-28445
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Bimetallic nanoparticles are highly relevant for applications in, e.g., catalysis, sensing, and energy harvesting. Their properties are determined by their shape, size, and, most notably, their chemical configuration, i.e., the elemental distribution throughout the particle. To fully exploit their potential, a comprehensive understanding of the coupling among size, shape, and chemical ordering is crucial. Here, we employ hybrid molecular dynamics-Monte Carlo simulations to reveal the energetics of two prototypical nanoalloys, Ag-Cu and Au-Pd, by comprehensive sampling across the full composition range, while considering both size and shape as parameters. Our simulations expose the interplay among bulk thermodynamics, surface energetics, and strain. Relative to the bulk, the behavior of Au-Pd nanoalloys is dominated by surface segregation, and is thus largely independent of particle size and shape. By contrast, strain plays a key role in the Ag-Cu system, in which size and, even more so, shape have a strong impact on the overall energetics and accordingly the elemental distribution. This effect is reflected by the sign of the mixing energy curve, which in the case of the Ag-Cu system changes from positive to negative when going from the bulk to the nanoscale. Although this suggests miscibility, it is rather a manifestation of segregation to different sites.

  • Automation of subsea connections for clusters of wave energy converters
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: The Proceedings of the Twenty-fifth (2015) International Ocean and Polar Engineering Conference. - 9781880653890
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To make wave power a viable energy source, large clusters of wave energy converters should be deployed. For most of the farms the output power of the WECs should be aggregated in a marine substation and then transmitted to the grid. The need for cost effective underwater cable connection operations is one of the main issues in offshore operations. Underwater connections can be conducted with wet- or dry-mateable connectors, performed by divers or ROVs. Although there are existing solutions used by the oil and gas industry that could be employed, the capital expenditure needed is not compatible with the offshore renewable energy industry. The objective of this research is to decrease costs and minimize working hazards associated with sub-sea work when performing these underwater electrical connections. This article presents a solution using small ROV’s instead of divers to execute the task. The main idea is to perform the connection underwater, but using dry-mateable connectors. A solution to make this possible is to install air pockets at the substation enclosing the connectors. These boxes are meant to be filled with air and hence create a dry environment in which to perform the connections. This is achieved with help of two tools. First a docking system allows the operator to fix the ROV at the substation before doing the connection. Then a gripper tool added to the ROV grasps the cable and connects it to the substation in the air pocket. The procedure and design of this low-cost solution are described, and the different prototypes that have been tested for offshore operation are also shown.

  • Blade force measurements and electrical torque ripple of a vertical axis wind turbine
  • 2016
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Wind power has become an attractive alternative for clean energy production. Horizontal axis turbines are increasing in power rating and are maturing as products. The cost of maintenance, noise levels and durability are possible concerns of the modern horizontal axis wind turbines. The vertical axis wind turbine project at Uppsala University addresses these issues among others. The concept removes the need for any yaw or pitch mechanism. Even the gearbox is excluded with the use of a directly driven multi-pole permanent magnet generator. Additionally, the generator and power electronics is placed at ground level. The project has resulted in several open site prototypes of which a 12kW and 200 kW turbine are still subject to active research. One major disadvantage of vertical axis wind turbines are the oscillating forces acting on the turbine. The first part of this work presents a measurement system developed to capture the forces acting on a blade during operation of the 12 kW prototype. The systems performance and data output is presented and thorough error estimations has been performed. In modern turbines it is common to have the generator power rectified into a DC-voltage, feeding an inverter connected to the grid. The rectifier is usually also an inverter allowing full control of the generator and the DC-link voltage. In the concept used on the 12 kW prototype, the electric power of the generator is instead passively rectified using diodes to produce the DC-voltage. Diodes are considered a cheap and robust solution for producing the DC-voltage. However, one drawback is the high current ripples produced. The current ripples lead to an electric torque ripple. This work studies how this electric torque ripple translates into a mechanical torque ripple on the turbine. A simulation model is developed and the results are compared with the force measurements on the 12 kW prototype.

  • Calculating Buoy Response for a Wave Energy Converter - a Comparsion Between Two Computational Methods and Experimental Results
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Theoretical and Applied Mechanics Letters. - : Elsevier BV. - 2095-0349. ; 7:3, s. 164-168
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • When designing a wave power plant, reliable and fast simulation tools are required. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software provides high accuracy but with a very high computational cost, and in operational, moderate sea states, linear potential flow theories may be sufficient to model the hydrodynamics. In this paper, a model is built in COMSOL Multiphysics to solve for the hydrodynamic parameters of a point-absorbing wave energy device. The results are compared with a linear model where the hydrodynamical parameters are computed using WAMIT, and to experimental results from the Lysekil research site. The agreement with experimental data is good for both numerical models.

  • ICET - A Python Library for Constructing and Sampling Alloy Cluster Expansions
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Advanced Theory and Simulations. - : Wiley. - 2513-0390. ; 2:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Alloy cluster expansions (CEs) provide an accurate and computationally efficient mapping of the potential energy surface of multi-component systems that enables comprehensive sampling of the many-dimensional configuration space. Here, integrated cluster expansion toolkit (ICET), a flexible, extensible, and computationally efficient software package, is introduced for the construction and sampling of CEs. ICET is largely written in Python for easy integration in comprehensive workflows, including first-principles calculations for the generation of reference data and machine learning libraries for training and validation. The package enables training using a variety of linear regression algorithms with and without regularization, Bayesian regression, feature selection, and cross-validation. It also provides complementary functionality for structure enumeration and mapping as well as data management and analysis. Potential applications are illustrated by two examples, including the computation of the phase diagram of a prototypical metallic alloy and the analysis of chemical ordering in an inorganic semiconductor.

  • Structurally driven asymmetric miscibility in the phase diagram of W-Ti
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Materials. - 2475-9953. ; 3:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • © 2019 American Physical Society. Phase diagrams for multicomponent systems represent crucial information for understanding and designing materials but are very time consuming to assess experimentally. Computational modeling plays an increasingly important role in this regard but has been largely focused on systems with matching lattice structures and/or stable boundary phases. Here, using a combination of density functional theory calculations, alloy cluster expansions, free energy integration, and Monte Carlo simulations, we obtain the phase diagram of W-Ti, a system that features metastable boundary phases on both sides of the phase diagram. We find that the mixing energy on the body-centered cubic (BCC) lattice is asymmetric and negative with a minimum of about -120 meV/atom, whereas for the hexagonal closed packed (HCP) lattice the mixing energy is positive. By combining these data with a model for the vibrational free energy, we propose a revision of the W-rich end of the phase diagram with a much larger solubility of Ti in BCC-W than previous assessments. Finally, by comparison with the W-V and W-Re systems, we demonstrate how strongly asymmetric phase diagrams can arise from a subtle energy balance of stable and metastable lattice structures.
