  • Correlating chemical composition and optical properties of photochromic rare-earth oxyhydrides using ion beam analysis
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section B. - : ELSEVIER. - 0168-583X .- 1872-9584. ; 485, s. 36-40
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We relate the photochromic response of rare-earth oxyhydride thin films (YHO, NdHO, GdHO and DyHO) synthesized by reactive magnetron sputtering to chemical composition. Depth profiles of the sample composition are extracted by a multi-method ion beam analysis approach. The total areal density of the thin films is deduced from Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry while coincidence Time-of-Flight/Energy Elastic Recoil Detection Analysis provides depth-profiles of the film constituents. High-resolution depth profiles of the concentration of light species, i.e. hydrogen and oxygen, are additionally extracted from Nuclear Reaction Analysis and Elastic Backscattering Spectrometry, respectively. The photochromic response of the films is measured by optical transmission spectroscopy before and after illumination. We report photochromic properties for YHO, NdHO, GdHO and DyHO for chemical compositions described by the formula REH2-delta O delta in the range of 0.45 < 6 < 1.5.

  • Extreme precipitation patterns in the Asia-Pacific region and its correlation with El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO)
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - 2045-2322. ; 13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the Asia-Pacific region (APR), extreme precipitation is one of the most critical climate stressors, affecting 60% of the population and adding pressure to governance, economic, environmental, and public health challenges. In this study, we analyzed extreme precipitation spatiotemporal trends in APR using 11 different indices and revealed the dominant factors governing precipitation amount by attributing its variability to precipitation frequency and intensity. We further investigated how these extreme precipitation indices are influenced by El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) at a seasonal scale. The analysis covered 465 ERA5 (the fifth-generation atmospheric reanalysis of the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts) study locations over eight countries and regions during 1990-2019. Results revealed a general decrease indicated by the extreme precipitation indices (e.g., the annual total amount of wet-day precipitation, average intensity of wet-day precipitation), particularly in central-eastern China, Bangladesh, eastern India, Peninsular Malaysia and Indonesia. We observed that the seasonal variability of the amount of wet-day precipitation in most locations in China and India are dominated by precipitation intensity in June-August (JJA), and by precipitation frequency in December-February (DJF). Locations in Malaysia and Indonesia are mostly dominated by precipitation intensity in March-May (MAM) and DJF. During ENSO positive phase, significant negative anomalies in seasonal precipitation indices (amount of wet-day precipitation, number of wet days and intensity of wet-day precipitation) were observed in Indonesia, while opposite results were observed for ENSO negative phase. These findings revealing patterns and drivers for extreme precipitation in APR may inform climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction strategies in the study region.

  • Spin Properties in InAs/GaAs Quantum Dot based Nanostructures
  • 2012
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) are a promising building block of future spin-functional devices for applications in spintronics and quantum information processing. Essential to the realization of such devices is our ability to create a desired spin orientation of charge carriers (electrons and holes), typically via injection of spin polarized carriers from other parts of the QD structures. In this thesis, the optical orientation technique has been used to characterize spin generation, relaxation and detection in self-assembled single and multi-QD structures in the InAs/GaAs system prepared by modern molecular beam epitaxy technique.Optical generation of spin-oriented carriers in the wetting layer (WL) and GaAs barrier was carried  out via circularly polarized excitation of uncorrelated electron-hole pairs from band-to-band transitions or via resonant excitation of correlated electron-hole pairs, i.e. excitons. It was shown that the generation and injection of uncorrelated electron-hole pairs is advantageous for spin-preserving injection into the QDs. The lower spin injection efficiency of excitons was attributed to an enhanced spin relaxation caused by the mutual electron-hole Coulomb exchange interaction. This correlation affects the spin injection efficiency up to elevated temperatures of around 150 K.Optical orientation at the energy of the WL light-hole (lh) exciton (XL) is accompanied by simultaneous excitation from the heavy-hole (hh) valence band at high ~k-vectors. Quantum interference of the two excitation pathways in the spectral vicinity of the XL energy resulted in occurrence of an asymmetric absorption peak, a Fano resonance. Complete quenching of spin generation efficiency at the resonance was observed and attributed to enhanced spin scattering between the hh and lh valence bands in conjunction with the Coulomb exchange interaction in the XL. This mechanism remains effective up to temperatures exceeding 100 K.In longitudinal magnetic fields up to 2 T, the spin detection efficiency in the QD ensemble was observed to increase by a factor of up to 2.5 in the investigated structures. This is due to the suppression of two spin depolarization mechanisms of the QD electron: the hyperfine interaction with the randomly oriented nuclear spins and the anisotropic exchange interaction with the hole. At higher magnetic fields, when these spin depolarization processes are quenched, only anisotropic QD structures (such as double QDs, aligned along a specific crystallographic axis) still exhibit a rather strong field dependence of the QD electron spin polarization under non-resonant excitation. Here, an increased spin relaxation in the spin injector, i.e. the WL or GaAs barrier, is suggested to lead to more efficient thermalization of the spins to the lower Zeeman-split spin state before capture to the QD.Finally, the influence of elevated temperatures on the spin properties of the QD structures was studied. The temperature dependence of dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) of the host lattice atoms in the QDs and its effect on the QD electron spin relaxation and dephasing were investigated for temperatures up to 85 K. An increase in DNP efficiency with temperature was found, accompanied by a decrease in the extent of spin dephasing. Both effects are attributed to an accelerating electron spin relaxation, suggested to be due to phonon-assisted electronnuclear spin flip-flops driven by the hyperfine interaction. At even higher temperatures, reaching up to room temperature, a surprising, sharp rise in the QD polarization degree has been found. Experiments in a transverse magnetic field showed a rather constant QD spin lifetime, which could be governed by the spin dephasing time T*2. The observed rising in QD spin polarization degree could be likely attributed to a combined effect of shortening of trion lifetime and increasing spin injection efficiency from the WL. The latter may be caused by thermal activation of non-radiative carrier relaxation channels.

  • Learning by supporting others : experienced parents' development process when supporting other parents with a child with Type 1 diabetes
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Clinical Nursing. - : Wiley. - 0962-1067 .- 1365-2702. ; 27:5-6, s. E1171-E1178
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: This study's purpose was to describe and analyze coach-parents' development process when supporting parents of children recently diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM).BACKGROUND: It has been found repeatedly that providing social support for families with a child diagnosed with T1DM promotes health and wellbeing for both the child and the parents. Less explored are the processes experienced by those who provide this support. However, research has found that acting as a provider of social support promotes personal development, strengthens communication skills, and increases self-confidence.METHODS: The study design was based on Constructivist Grounded Theory and data were collected, through Repeated Focus Group Discussions, from eight coach-parents at a Swedish hospital from 2012-2015.RESULTS: The core category in the data was identified as a learning process where coach-parents emphasized their own learning in the dyad supporter - supported, and in the interaction with other parents in the Repeated Focus Group Discussions. The coach-parents' motivation for participation was a wish to learn more and to help other parents in a life-changing situation. They also pointed out hindrances and their frustration when unable to provide support.CONCLUSIONS: This study leads to the conclusion that people who provide support benefit from doing so. Encountering people with similar experiences in a supportive situation promotes a reciprocal learning process, based on the supporter's wish to help people in a situation they recognize. A further conclusion is that social support is not only essential initially, but is also important over a longer period and that it follows various life stages.RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: Setting up repeated focus group discussions might be a relevant and effective tool for pediatric diabetes nurses to use in promoting health and wellbeing for both families with a newly diagnosed child and experienced families. • Party membership and state subsidies : a comparative study
  • 2009
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis tests the hypothesis that increasing state subsidies to political parties cause a declined party membership. The theory that predicted this development was constructed by Epstein in 1967 and presented in his book Political Parties in Western Democracies. The theoretical propositions have been debated by political scientists since then, but no thorough test has been conducted.  In order to test the hypothesis state subsidies data and party membership data was collected for the national parties from eight states. The data was then analysed by use of the panel data models. Panel data models make use of the regression analysis technique. Examples of specialized such models are analysis through the fundamental parameter of change, first differencing and pooled analysis. The results provided by the models proved to not give a straight answer. Instead, the results pointed in different directions.  The most likely interpretation of the results is that increasing state subsidies to political parties does not cause a decline in party membership. To validate such a result would require that most of the results pointed in the same direction. Thus, the hypothesis of the investigation should be considered falsified. Instead the focus of future studies should probably be directed at the supply side of party membership. When party membership decline is explained by the supply side this means that the decline is explained by people stop having motive to become party members. However, it is important to remember that other interpretations of the results are possible as well.

  • Explaining and predicting the increased thorax injury in aged females: age and subject-specific thorax geometry coupled with improved bone constitutive models and age-specific material properties evaluated in side impact conditions
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Public Health. - 2296-2565. ; 12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Predicting and understanding thorax injury is fundamental for the assessment and development of safety systems to mitigate injury risk to the increasing and vulnerable aged population. While computational human models have contributed to the understanding of injury biomechanics, contemporary human body models have struggled to predict rib fractures and explain the increased incidence of injury in the aged population. The present study enhanced young and aged human body models (HBMs) by integrating a biofidelic cortical bone constitutive model and population-based bone material properties. The HBMs were evaluated using side impact sled tests assessed using chest compression and number of rib fractures. The increase in thoracic kyphosis and the associated change in rib angle with increasing age, led to increased rib torsional moment increasing the rib shear stress. Coupled with and improved cortical bone constitutive model and aged material properties, the higher resulting shear stress led to an increased number of rib fractures in the aged model. The importance of shear stress resulting from torsional load was further investigated using an isolated rib model. In contrast, HBM chest compression, a common thorax injury-associated metric, was insensitive to the aging factors studied. This study proposes an explanation for the increased incidence of thorax injury with increasing age reported in epidemiological data, and provides an enhanced understanding of human rib mechanics that will benefit assessment and design of future safety systems.

  • Dynamics in refurbishment : a study of production processes and human interactions in a commercial environment
  • 2001
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The client-contractor relationship has long been a concern in the Swedish construction industry and in constraction management research. This concern has, to great extent, been directed at the need to improve productivity. The result of the industry´s approach to increasing productivity in the 1960s is reflected in functional diversity and the industrial paradigm of a linear and sequential model of planning, design, construction and handing over of a completed building. The approach accentuates the need for effective communication and interaction between the parties, especially those engaged in refurbishment projects. This thesis concludes that the client and contractor do, in fact, share an understanding of the ideal production model for refurbishment. However, this shared production philosophy reveals different production drivers and these can have correspondingly different implications for project success. Another conclusion is that new forms of administrative procedures, with respect to environmental considerations and CAD, can facilitate better communication between actors. Empirical studies of interpersonal emotion support the view that function diversity, motivation diversity, and social character affect performance in refurbishment projects.

  • Deforestation in the Colombian Amazon : Connecting the Environmental Rights of Future Generations and the Rights of Nature
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Les grands arrêts inspirants du droit de l'environnement. - : Larcier. - 9782807943063 ; , s. 15-29
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this 2018 decision, the Colombian Supreme Court considered that deforestation in the Colombian Amazon contributed significantly to climate change and therefore violated the constitutional environmental rights of future generations, as embodied by the young people who brought the case. Further, it recognized the Colombian Amazon as a subject of rights, with the rights to protection, conservation, maintenance and restoration. In its decision, the Court ordered the state and other organizational defendants to take several innovative measures intended to stop deforestation. It ordered the Presidency of the Republic, the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, and other regional and municipal bodies to issue action plans to address deforestation and reduce the impact of climate change. It also ordered the Presidency of the Republic, the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to formulate an "intergenerational pact for the life of the Colombian Amazon", together with the plaintiffs, impacted communities, scientists, and other interested persons including the general public, with a goal of reducing climate change, and reducing deforestation to zero. Importantly, this case made explicit the link between climate change, the rights of children, the rights of future generations, and the rights of nature.

  • Simulation of Electrical and Thermal Properties of Granite under the Application of Electrical Pulses Using Equivalent Circuit Models
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Materials. - : MDPI. - 1996-1944. ; 15:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Since energy efficiency in comminution of ores is as small as 1% using a mechanical crushing process, it is highly demanded to improve its efficiency. Using electrical impulses to selectively liberate valuable minerals from ores can be a solution of this problem. In this work, we developed a simulation method using equivalent circuits of granite to better understand the crushing process with high-voltage (HV) electrical pulses. From our simulation works, we calculated the electric field distributions in granite when an electrical pulse was applied. We also calculated other associated electrical phenomena such as produced heat and temperature changes from the simulation results. A decrease in the electric field was observed in the plagioclase with high electrical conductivity and void space. This suggests that the void volume in each mineral is important in calculating the electrical properties. Our equivalent circuit models considering both the electrical conductivity and dielectric constant of a granite can more accurately represent the electrical properties of granite under HV electric pulse application. These results will help us better understand the liberation of minerals from granite by electric pulse application.

  • A Computing Perspective on the Bologna Process
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: SIGCSE Bulletin: inroads. - : Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). - 0097-8418. ; 38:4, s. 115-131
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Bologna process is intended to culminate in the formation of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) by 2010. Its aim is to facilitate the mobility of people, the transparency and recognition of qualifications, quality and development of a European dimension to higher education, and the attractiveness of European institutions for third country students. This paper provides an overview of progress towards implementation in EHEA member states using official documents and interview data from faculty teaching computing in countries represented at the ITiCSE 2006 meeting. The key areas where the structures established by the Bologna process are problematic for computing education arise from the rapidly changing nature of the curriculum. It seems that the maturity and capability criteria, as well as the manner in which learning outcomes are specified, being developed within the Bologna process are too general. This endangers the properties of transparency and mobility that the process intends to promote.Progression and prerequisite knowledge in computing degrees can be very specific. For instance, generic learning outcomes for an introductory programming course quite rightly will not specify the programming language, or languages, used to implement algorithms. However, suppose a student intends to study an advanced algorithms and data structures course in which Java is the language of implementation which has an introductory course in programming as a prerequisite. If the introductory course language was Standard ML it is not clear that the prerequisite course actually provides the student with a suitable background. These types of complexities are typical of computing, where early subject curricula are not standardised nationally or internationally, and create significant hurdles for realising the Bologna objectives.

  • Commoditization of rural lands in the semi-arid region of Chile—the case of the huentelauquén agricultural community
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Agriculture. - Basel : MDPI. - 2077-0472. ; 8:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The agri-pastoralist communities of the semi-arid region of Chile, with their unusual common land ownership, have not escaped economic neo-liberalism. The general pattern of insatiable demand of land for agricultural production, mining, energy generation and real-estate development has become a challenge for these communities. How are these processes affecting the traditional practices of these localized agri-food systems, based on rain-fed-agriculture, pastoralism and the fading practice of transhumance? In this article, we look at how the Huentelauquén Agricultural Community in the Canela Commune has dealt with, reacted to, and been affected by regional economic shifts geared towards market liberalization. In particular, we analyze the structural changes in the community in regard to alienation of the commons and changes in land tenure. Qualitative interviews were conducted with key informants in this setting. To provide a richer contextual setting, this article draws on several other empirically-based works on the commons’ emergence and evolution, land commoditization and local struggles for livelihoods. Our study shows that a community can adopt different strategies when dealing with powerful sectoral development that can involve resistance as well as positioning that seeks to find favorable terms of engagement. Our findings highlight that processes affecting the traditional commons are resulting in the re-appropriation and re-occupation of the land. This is resulting in social differentiation, weakening of the community’s social bonds, depeasantization and further degradation of an already vulnerable ecosystem. In sum, these shifts are posing an existential threat to this form of traditional agri-pastoralism.

  • Deceptive single-locus taxonomy and phylogeography : Wolbachia-associated divergence in mitochondrial DNA is not reflected in morphology and nuclear markers in a butterfly species
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Ecology and Evolution. - : Wiley. - 2045-7758. ; 3:16, s. 5167-5176
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The satyrine butterfly Coenonympha tullia (Nymphalidae: Satyrinae) displays a deep split between two mitochondrial clades, one restricted to northern Alberta, Canada, and the other found throughout Alberta and across North America. We confirm this deep divide and test hypotheses explaining its phylogeographic structure. Neither genitalia morphology nor nuclear gene sequence supports cryptic species as an explanation, instead indicating differences between nuclear and mitochondrial genome histories. Sex-biased dispersal is unlikely to cause such mito-nuclear differences; however, selective sweeps by reproductive parasites could have led to this conflict. About half of the tested samples were infected by Wolbachia bacteria. Using multilocus strain typing for three Wolbachia genes, we show that the divergent mitochondrial clades are associated with two different Wolbachia strains, supporting the hypothesis that the mito-nuclear differences resulted from selection on the mitochondrial genome due to selective sweeps by Wolbachia strains.

  • The Swedish version of the Lumbar Spine Instability Questionnaire : A clinimetric study of validity and reliability
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Physiotherapy Theory and Practice. - : Taylor & Francis. - 0959-3985 .- 1532-5040. ; 39:1, s. 154-162
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introduction: The Lumbar Spine Instability Questionnaire (LSIQ) is a patient-reported outcome measure (PROM) suggested to measure clinical instability of the spine. Objective: The aim was to translate and cross-culturally adapt the LSIQ into Swedish and to test its measurement properties. Methods: We included people with low back pain (LBP) seeking primary care (n = 101). The LSIQ was translated using international recommendations. Construct validity was investigated via the Roland Morris Disability Questionnaire (RM) and the Numeric Pain Rating Scale (NPRS). Reliability was tested via test-retest (Intra Class Correlation, ICC2.1) (n = 50) and by analyzing internal consistency (Cronbach Alpha). A suggested cutoff score was used to study discriminative ability. Results: The LSIQ was successfully translated into Swedish. For construct validity, a moderate correlation was shown with the RM (rho 0.58) and the NPRS (rho 0.47). Test-retest demonstrated high reliability for the total score (ICC2.1 0.94, 95% CI 0.86–0.96). Internal consistency reached a Cronbach Alpha of 0.64. Participants scoring higher on the LSIQ (≥9) showed significantly higher pain and lower disability levels, were of higher age and less physically active. Conclusion: The Swedish LSIQ shows acceptable measurement properties regarding test-retest reliability and validity. To further study the usefulness of the LSIQ and the suggested cutoff score, the dimensionality needs to be investigated.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we study the problem of identifying misbehaving network communications using community detection algorithms. Recently, it was shown that identifying the communications that do not respect community boundaries is a promising approach for network intrusion detection. However, it was also shown that traditional community detection algorithms are not suitable for this purpose. In this paper, we propose a novel method for enhancing community detection algorithms, and show that contrary to previous work, they provide a good basis for network misbehavior detection. This enhancement extends disjoint communities identified by these algorithms with a layer of auxiliary communities, so that the boundary nodes can belong to several communities. Although non-misbehaving nodes can naturally be in more than one community, we show that the majority of misbehaving nodes belong to multiple overlapping communities, therefore overlapping community detection algorithms can also be deployed for intrusion detection. Finally, we present a framework for anomaly detection which uses community detection as its basis. The framework allows incorporation of application-specific filters to reduce the false positives induced by community detection algorithms. Our framework is validated using large email networks and flow graphs created from real network traffic.

  • Ingår i: PloS Computational Biology. - : Public Library of Science (PLoS). - 1553-734X .- 1553-7358. ; 8:10, s. e1002710-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cys-loop receptors constitute a superfamily of pentameric ligand-gated ion channels (pLGICs), including receptors for acetylcholine, serotonin, glycine and γ-aminobutyric acid. Several bacterial homologues have been identified that are excellent models for understanding allosteric binding of alcohols and anesthetics in human Cys-loop receptors. Recently, we showed that a single point mutation on a prokaryotic homologue (GLIC) could transform it from a channel weakly potentiated by ethanol into a highly ethanol-sensitive channel. Here, we have employed molecular simulations to study ethanol binding to GLIC, and to elucidate the role of the ethanol-enhancing mutation in GLIC modulation. By performing 1-μs simulations with and without ethanol on wild-type and mutated GLIC, we observed spontaneous binding in both intra-subunit and inter-subunit transmembrane cavities. In contrast to the glycine receptor GlyR, in which we previously observed ethanol binding primarily in an inter-subunit cavity, ethanol primarily occupied an intra-subunit cavity in wild-type GLIC. However, the highly ethanol-sensitive GLIC mutation significantly enhanced ethanol binding in the inter-subunit cavity. These results demonstrate dramatic effects of the F(14′)A mutation on the distribution of ligands, and are consistent with a two-site model of pLGIC inhibition and potentiation.

    • This study is about seven women’s organizations in Belgrade, Serbia and their relations to domestic and international donors during the period 2003-2006. My main research questions focus on their choices of either domestic or international cooperation partners. How and why did the women organize themselves? What factors were essential when selecting donors? In what ways were the organizations influenced by donors?Through interviews, with organization representatives’ concepts such as gift and reciprocity, power and dependency, trust and mistrust and collective identity emerged.  These concepts were used as points of departure for developing deeper understanding of women organizations’ choice of cooperation partners. The women organizations’ basically had two alternatives for cooperation: cooperation with foreign donors which offered funds, organizational development and social networks. Alternately, cooperation with local donors, which offered the equivalent except for the organizational development. Cooperation with the foreign donor has resulted in more professional attitudes to the work that have been desired by other international donors. A result is that they can compete with other women’s organizations’ for international funding. Cooperation with local donors has led to fewer resources but more independent working practices. For these women organizations’ independence was important so they choose partners who, they felt more respected this allowing them to write articles or discuss gender in the media with little external influence. Regardless of the chosen donor the reciprocity is embedded in the relation between the donor and the receiver of aid, which in various ways is beneficial for both parties.

    • This work explores the modelling of soft tissues, particularly the Achilles tendon, using the absolute nodal coordinate formulation (ANCF).The anisotropic Gasser-Ogden-Holzapfel (GOH) potential energy function provided the necessary anisotropic elastic feature descriptions. A generalized one-dimensional Maxwell model described the viscoelastic effects. Finally, a parameter-based damage model characterized the effects of repetitive loading. We used an objectivity test to establish multibody system dynamics usability. The test ascertains whether or not the developed elements can adequately describe rigid body motion and therefore be applied to describe large deformation in whole bodies. Comparing our results against high-fidelity ANSYS 3D FEA solutions served as verification. To further ensure the validity of the obtained solutions, our results were also compared against test results. For modelling material behaviour, the developed ANCF elements demonstrated substantial fidelity, and simulation results agreed well with test results and results found in the literature.

    • In this paper we introduce Technology Jams as a platform for exploring how novel technologies, when introduced in a specific context, can open up possibilities for radical innovations that change the relationships between people and products or services. The concept of Technology Jams is based on elements from design thinking and so-called Jams. The platform that Technology Jams create, aims to support cooperation as well as exchange of knowledge and ideas between people from different backgrounds. Through rapid prototyping and user involvement in evaluation, these ideas can be tested and explored. This way, Technology Jams provide a more hands-on approach for sparking radical innovation of products and/or services within the field of Human-Computer Interaction. We provide a detailed description of the setup of Technology Jams and present the content and outcomes of a pilot Technology Jam. Based on these results, complemented with other questions and challenges, we sketch possible ways for further development of the concept of Technology Jams.

  • Cross-ethnic generalizability of the three-factor model of psychopathy : the youth psychopathic traits inventory in an incarcerated sample of native Dutch and Moroccan immigrant boys
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Law and Psychiatry. - : Pergamon Press. - 0160-2527 .- 1873-6386. ; 34:2, s. 127-130
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Previous research provides support for the existence of the psychopathy construct in youths. However, studies regarding the psychometric properties of psychopathy measures with ethnic minority youths are lacking.METHODS: In the present study, the three-factor structure of the Youth Psychopathic Traits Inventory (YPI) was examined for both native Dutch youth (N=158) and an ethnic minority group, Moroccans (N=141), in an incarcerated adolescent population in the Netherlands.RESULTS: Our results showed that the three-factor structure of the YPI is comparable across an ethnic majority and an ethnic minority group in an incarcerated sample in the Netherlands. Moreover, associations between psychopathic traits and mental health problems were similar for both ethnic groups.CONCLUSION: The results support the cross-ethnic generalizability of the three-factor model of psychopathy as measured through the Youth Psychopathic Traits Inventory.

  • Prediction of Parametric Rolling for a Container Ship in Regular and Irregular Waves Using a Fully Nonlinear Time Domain Potential Flow Method
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: 8th International Conference on Computational Methods in Marine Engineering, MARINE 2019. - 9788494919435 ; , s. 646- 657
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper numerical simulations of parametric rolling have been performed. SAFEDOR, an EU funded benchmark study on the capability of different methods to predict such motion, was replicated here, in order to assess the quality of SHIPFLOW MOTIONS for the evaluation of this phenomenon. The code is a fully nonlinear 3D unsteady potential flow method. Since viscosity is not implicitly accounted for by a potential flow method, two different techniques are used here to introduce viscous damping coefficients in the roll motion equation. The results obtained with this method are aligned with the results from the best performing methods analyzed in the benchmark, showing a satisfactory match with experimental results.

  • The evolution and maintenance of omnivory : Dynamic constraints and the role of food quality
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Ecology. ; 84:10, s. 2557-2567
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In several taxa, the ability to feed omnivorously from more than one trophic level has evolved from more specialized feeding habits. A prerequisite for this evolutionary scenario is initial coexistence (on the same or different trophic levels) of the consumers subsequently involved in omnivory. Evolution of omnivory should also be favored by prior asymmetries in consumer interactions. I use a dynamic model to explore conditions for coexistence of two consumers depending on a single biotic resource in simple. food webs of increasing asymmetry between consumers: (1) pure resource competition, (2) resource competition with unidirectional interference, (3) omnivory, and (4) pure predation. If consumers are energy limited, omnivory is unlikely to evolve from a competitive system, because stable coexistence of two consumers on a single resource is impossible, even if there is a trade-off between resource exploitation and interference abilities. Initial coexistence of two consumers is easier to achieve, if the species are arranged in a food chain. If costs of diet generalization are low, selection should then favor the inclusion of the resource in the top consumer's diet. In systems with high resource carrying capacity, the intermediate consumer will then, however, be frequently driven to extinction-in which case omnivory is not maintained. Low nutritional quality of the resource can stabilize the omnivory system and allow three-species coexistence at high resource carrying capacities. Low nutritional quality of the resource may also create conditions for the evolution of omnivory from a competitive system. If the content of an essential nutrient in resource biomass is dynamic, stable coexistence of two competitors becomes possible if both are limited by the nutrient content of the resource. In this case, selection may favor the, evolution of omnivory, because competitor biomass is usually of higher nutritional quality than resource biomass. An explicit treatment of flexible resource stoichiometry thus broadens the possibilities for the evolution of omnivory.

  • Psychological processes in somatic disease
  • 1997
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The course of disease was investigated in three studies of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The aim was to explore changes in clinical course during and after psychodynamically oriented psychotherapy, with one session of 60-90 minutes per week for 3.3 years as a median. The most important study of these three is Study II which included 15 RA patients treated with the above type of psychotherapy. A retrospective evaluation of psychic and somatic states at each therapy session and medical examination during a study period of 4 years was made on the basis of detailed therapy notes and medical records, respectively. A method with "life lines" was used to illustrate the course of psychic state and of rheumatic disease. Result: Six patients improved, on the whole continuously, both psychically and somatically throughout the study period and for a long time thereafter. Another five patients improved during the first 1 - 2 years. Later, when emotional links to childhood trauma were opened up these patients regressed and the course of rheumatic disease and psychic state became more varied. In four cases, there was greater variety in both the course of psychic state and the course of rheumatic disease. Nevertheless, after the psychotherapy period all patients had returned to their professional work again. These results were in accordance with those in a previous Study I. In a 20-years' follow-up of an earlier group (Study III) there were indications that favourable results from psychotherapy could be sustained for a very long time. Study IV. In a group of nine female assembly workers the rate of sick leave due to neck/shoulder pains was 14% despite the fact that ergonomic measures had been taken in accordance with the prescriptions of the Labour Inspectorate. The women felt "repressed and trodden upon from above". When the management director was persuaded radically to improve his attitude towards these women, the sick-leave rate fell below 1 %. Study V. Psychosomatic connections in 11 patients suffering from amalgam illness were verified by means of in-depth psychodynamic interviews. Two patients who completed the interview with insight therapy noted improvements in their emotional stability. Conclusion: Psychoanalytically oriented treatment of patients with the above somatic diseases and who are willing to cooperate with it, can be a valuable contribution to the therapeutic arsenal.

  • Institutional Profiling for Educational Development: Identifying Which Conditions for Student Success to Address in a Given Educational Setting—A Case Study
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of college student retention. - : SAGE Publications. - 1521-0251 .- 1541-4167. ; , s. 1-23
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Thanks to a wealth of research on college student retention, we have today a good understanding of the factors that facilitate student success. However, actions taken to promote student success are far from always effective. The teaching–learning environments differ between institutions and provide, to a greater or lesser extent, the conditions that contribute to student success. The purpose of this case study is to test a method, based on a questionnaire and the use of effect sizes, to establish a “profile” of a particular university department to identify to what extent five conditions for student success (institutional commitment, expectations, support, feedback, and student involvement) contributed to student success in courses given at this department. The practical implications of the profiling method used in the study are discussed.

  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Service Design Proof of Concept. - Linköping : Linköping University Electronic Press. - 9789176852378 ; , s. 368-385
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The influence of technology on value co-creation practices of service actors has been studied from a service encounter perspective, during or after technology introduction. We contribute to this existing research by introducing a multi-actorperspective to study such changes priorto technology deployment. We provide two illustrative cases that show how this can be done. In addition, we study the generalisability of findings from such research projects, through an exploratory qualitative comparison of the projects. We make a second contribution by providing five contextual aspects for other researchers to use when assessing 1) generalisability of our findings and 2) to what contexts their research results can be transferred. Finally, we make a third contribution by positing that literature on roles and role change supports service researchers and designers to make sense of the ways in which service actors perceive that technology deployment will influence value co-creation in service systems.
