  • Detection of sporadic impact flashes on the Moon : Implications for the luminous efficiency of hypervelocity impacts and derived terrestrial impact rates
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Icarus. - : Elsevier BV. - 0019-1035 .- 1090-2643. ; 184:2, s. 319-326
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present the first redundant detection of sporadic impact flashes on the Moon from a systematic survey performed between 2001 and 2004. Our wide-field lunar monitoring allows us to estimate the impact rate of large meteoroids on the Moon as a function of the luminous energy received on Earth. It also shows that some historical well-documented mysterious lunar events fit in a clear impact context. Using these data and traditional values of the luminous efficiency for this kind of event we obtain that the impact rate on Earth of large meteoroids (0.1–10 m) would be at least one order of magnitude larger than currently thought. This discrepancy indicates that the luminous efficiency of the hypervelocity impacts is higher than 10−2, much larger than the common belief, or the latest impact fluxes are somewhat too low, or, most likely, a combination of both. Our nominal analysis implies that on Earth, collisions of bodies with masses larger than 1 kg can be as frequent as 80,000 per year and blasts larger than 15-kton could be as frequent as one per year, but this is highly dependent on the exact choice of the luminous efficiency value. As a direct application of our results, we expect that the impact flash of the SMART-1 spacecraft should be detectable from Earth with medium-sized telescopes.

  • Improvements in the search for potential biomarkers by proteomics: application of principal component and discriminant analyses for two-dimensional maps evaluation.
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Journal of chromatography. B, Analytical technologies in the biomedical and life sciences. - : Elsevier BV. - 1570-0232. ; 849:1-2, s. 251-60
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study, we evaluated if the application of multivariate analysis on the data obtained from two-dimensional protein maps could mean an improvement in the search for protein markers. First, we performed a classical proteomic study of the differential expression of serum N-glycoproteins in colorectal cancer patients. Then, applying principal component analysis (PCA) we assessed the utility of the 2-D protein pattern and certain subsets of spots as a tool to distinguish control and case samples, and tested the accuracy of the classification model by linear discriminant analysis (LDA). On the other hand we looked for altered spots by univariate statistics and then analysed them as a cluster by PCA and LDA. We found that those proteins combined presented a theoretical sensitivity and specificity of 100%. Finally, the spots with known protein identity were analysed by multivariate methods, finding a subgroup that behaved as the most obvious candidates for further validation trials.

  • Combining multiple matchers for fingerprint verification : A case study in biosecure network of excellence
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Annales des télécommunications. - Paris, France : Springer. - 0003-4347 .- 1958-9395. ; 62:1-2, s. 62-82
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on experiments for the fingerprint modality conducted during the First BioSecure Residential Workshop. Two reference systems for fingerprint verification have been tested together with two additional non-reference systems. These systems follow different approaches of fingerprint processing and are discussed in detail. Fusion experiments involving different combinations of the available systems are presented. The experimental results show that the best recognition strategy involves both minutiae-based and correlation-based measurements. Regarding the fusion experiments, the best relative improvement is obtained when fusing systems that are based on heterogeneous strategies for feature extraction and/or matching. The best combinations of two/three/four systems always include the best individual systems whereas the best verification performance is obtained when combining all the available systems.

  • The G428A nonsense mutation in FUT2 provides strong but not absolute protection against symptomatic GII.4 Norovirus infection. : Novel GII.4 disease pattern
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: PloS one. - : Public Library of Science (PLoS). - 1932-6203. ; 4:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In November 2004, 116 individuals in an elderly nursing home in El Grao de Castellón, Spain were symptomatically infected with genogroup II.4 (GII.4) norovirus. The global attack rate was 54.2%. Genotyping of 34 symptomatic individuals regarding the FUT2 gene revealed that one patient was, surprisingly, a non-secretor, hence indicating secretor-independent infection. Lewis genotyping revealed that Lewis-positive and negative individuals were susceptible to symptomatic norovirus infection indicating that Lewis status did not predict susceptibility. Saliva based ELISA assays were used to determine binding of the outbreak virus to saliva samples. Saliva from a secretor-negative individual bound the authentic outbreak GII.4 Valencia/2004/Es virus, but did not in contrast to secretor-positive saliva bind VLP of other strains including the GII.4 Dijon strain. Amino acid comparison of antigenic A and B sites located on the external loops of the P2 domain revealed distinct differences between the Valencia/2004/Es and Dijon strains. All three aa in each antigenic site as well as 10/11 recently identified evolutionary hot spots, were unique in the Valencia/2004/Es strain compared to the Dijon strain. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first example of symptomatic GII.4 norovirus infection of a Le(a+b-) individual homozygous for the G428A nonsense mutation in FUT2. Taken together, our study provides new insights into the host genetic susceptibility to norovirus infections and evolution of the globally dominating GII.4 viruses.

  • Discriminative multimodal biometric authentication based on quality measures
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Pattern Recognition. - Oxford : Pergamon Press. - 0031-3203 .- 1873-5142. ; 38:5, s. 777-779
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A novel score-level fusion strategy based on quality measures for multimodal biometric authentication is presented. In the proposed method, the fusion function is adapted every time an authentication claim is performed based on the estimated quality of the sensed biometric signals at this time. Experimental results combining written signatures and quality-labelled fingerprints are reported. The proposed scheme is shown to outperform significantly the fusion approach without considering quality signals. In particular, a relative improvement of approximately 20% is obtained on the publicly available MCYT bimodal database.

  • Fingerprint Image Quality Estimation and its Application to Multi-Algorithm Verification
  • 2006
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Recently, image quality awareness has been found to increase recognition rates and to supportdecisions in multimodal authentication systems significantly. Nevertheless, automatic quality assessmentis still an open issue, especially with regard to biometric authentication tasks. Here we analyze theorientation tensor of fingerprint images with a set of symmetry descriptors, in order to detect fingerprintimage quality impairments like noise, lack of structure, blur, etc. Allowed classes of local shapes area priori application information for the proposed quality measures, therefore no training or explicitimage reference information is required. Our quality assessment method is compared to an existingautomatic method and a human opinion in numerous experiments involving several public databases.Once the quality of an image is determined, it can be exploited in several ways, one of which is toadapt fusion parameters in a monomodal multi-algorithm environment, here a number of fingerprintrecognition systems. In this work, several trained and non-trained fusion schemes applied to the scoresof these matchers are compared. A Bayes-based strategy for combining experts with weights on theirpast performances, able to readapt to each identity claim based on the input quality is developed andevaluated. To show some of the advantages of quality-driven multi-algorithm fusion, such as boostingrecognition rates, increasing computational efficiency, etc., a novel cascade fusion and simple fusionrules are employed in comparison as well.

  • Fingerprint Image-Quality Estimation and its Application to Multialgorithm Verification
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Information Forensics and Security. - New York, N.Y. : IEEE Signal Processing Society. - 1556-6013 .- 1556-6021. ; 3:2, s. 331-338
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Signal-quality awareness has been found to increase recognition rates and to support decisions in multisensor environments significantly. Nevertheless, automatic quality assessment is still an open issue. Here, we study the orientation tensor of fingerprint images to quantify signal impairments, such as noise, lack of structure, blur, with the help of symmetry descriptors. A strongly reduced reference is especially favorable in biometrics, but less information is not sufficient for the approach. This is also supported by numerous experiments involving a simpler quality estimator, a trained method (NFIQ), as well as the human perception of fingerprint quality on several public databases. Furthermore, quality measurements are extensively reused to adapt fusion parameters in a monomodal multialgorithm fingerprint recognition environment. In this study, several trained and nontrained score-level fusion schemes are investigated. A Bayes-based strategy for incorporating experts' past performances and current quality conditions, a novel cascaded scheme for computational efficiency, besides simple fusion rules, is presented. The quantitative results favor quality awareness under all aspects, boosting recognition rates and fusing differently skilled experts efficiently as well as effectively (by training).

  • Oxo-4-methylpentanoic acid directs the metabolism of GABA into the Krebs cycle in rat pancreatic islets
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Biochemical Journal. - 0264-6021 .- 1470-8728. ; 400:1, s. 81-89
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OMP (oxo-4-methylpentanoic acid) stimulates by itself a biphasic secretion of insulin whereas L-leucine requires the presence of L-glutamine. L-Glutamine is predominantly converted into GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) in rat islets and L-leucine seems to promote its metabolism in the 'GABA shunt' [Fernandez-Pascual, Mukala-Nsengu-Tshibangu, Martin del Rio and Tamarit-Rodriguez (2004) Biochem. J. 379,721-729]. In the present study, we have investigated how 10mM OMP affects L-glutamine metabolism to uncover possible differences with L-leucine that might help to elucidate whether they share a common mechanism of stimulation of insulin secretion. In contrast with L-leucine, OMP alone stimulated a biphasic insulin secretion in rat perifused islets and decreased the islet content of GABA without modifying its extracellular release irrespective of the concentration of L-glutamine in the medium. GABA was transaminated to L-leucine whose intracellular concentration did not change because it was efficiently transported out of the islet cells. The L-[U-C-14]-Glutamine (at 0.5 and 10.0 mM) conversion to (CO2)-C-14 was enhanced by 10 mM OMP within 30% and 70% respectively. Gabaculine (250 mu M), a GABA transaminase inhibitor, suppressed OMP-induced oxygen consumption but not L-leucineor glucose-stimulated respiration. It also suppressed the OMP-induced decrease in islet GABA content and the OMP-induced increase in insulin release. These results support the view that OMP promotes islet metabolism in the 'GABA shunt' generating 2-oxo-glutarate, in the branched-chain a-amino acid transaminase reaction, which would in turn trigger GABA deamination by GABA transaminase. OMP, but not L-leucine, suppressed islet semialdehyde succinic acid reductase activity and this might shift the metabolic flux of the 'GABA shunt' from gamma-hydroxybutyrate to succinic acid production.

  • Characterization, phase-solubility, and molecular modeling of inclusion complex of 5-nitroindazole derivative with cyclodextrins.
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Bioorganic & Medicinal Chemistry. - : Elsevier. - 0968-0896 .- 1464-3391. ; 16:9, s. 5078-5084
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The slightly water-soluble 5-nitroindazole derivative (5-NI) and its inclusion with either beta-cyclodextrin (betaCD) or Heptakis (2,6-di-O-methyl)-beta-cyclodextrin (DMbetaCD) were investigated. The stoichiometric ratios and stability constants describing the extent of formation of the complexes were determined by phase-solubility measurements obtaining type-A(L) diagrams in both cases. According to the continuous variation method (Job's plot) a 1:1 stoichiometry has been proposed for the complexes. Also electrochemical studies were carried out on both CDs complexes, where the observed change in the E(PC) value for DMbetaCD indicated a lower feasibility of the nitro group reduction. The detailed spatial configuration is proposed based on two-dimensional NMR methods. These results are further interpreted using molecular modeling studies. The latter results are in good agreement with the experimental data.

  • Vegetation signature in the observed globally integrated spectrum of earth considering simultaneous cloud data : Applications for extrasolar planets
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - : American Astronomical Society. - 0004-637X .- 1538-4357. ; 651:1 I, s. 544-552
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A series of missions will be launched over the next few decades that will be designed to detect and characterize extrasolar planets around nearby stars. These missions will search for habitable environments and signs of life (biosignatures) in planetary spectra. The vegetation's "red edge," an enhancement in the Earth's spectrum near 700 nm when sunlight is reflected from greenery, is often suggested as a tool in the search for life in terrestrial-like extrasolar planets. Here, through ground-based observations of the Earth's spectrum, satellite observations of clouds, and an advanced atmospheric radiative-transfer code, we determine the temporal evolution of the vegetation signature of Earth. We find a strong correlation between the evolution of the spectral intensity of the red edge and changes in the cloud-free vegetated area over the course of observations. This relative increase for our single day corresponds to an apparent reflectance change of about 0.0050 ± 0.0005 with respect to the mean albedo of 0.25 at 680 nm (2.0% ± 0.2%). The excellent agreement between models and observations motivated us to probe more deeply into the red-edge detectability using real cloud observations at longer timescales. Overall, we find the evolution of the red-edge signal in the globally averaged spectra to be weak, and only attributable to vegetation changes when the real land and cloud distributions for the day are known. However, it becomes prominent under certain Sun-Earth-Moon orbital geometries that are applicable to the search for life in extrasolar planets. Our results indicate that vegetation detection in Earth-like planets will require a considerable level of instrumental precision and will be a difficult task, but not as difficult as the normally weak earthshine signal might seem to suggest.

  • Synthesis and electrochemical study of narrow band gap conducting polymers based on 2,2 '-dipyrroles linked with conjugated aza-spacers
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Synthetic metals. - : Elsevier BV. - 0379-6779 .- 1879-3290. ; 157:1, s. 60-65
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A series of 2,2'-dipyrrole monomers separated by aza-spacers (N,N'-bis-(1H-pyrrol-2-ylmethylene)-benzene-1,4-diamine; N-4,N-4'-bis(1H-pyrrol-2-ylmethylene)-biphenyl-4,4'-diamine; N,N'-bis-[1-(1H-pyrrol-2-yl)-ethylidene]-hydrazine; and 4,4'-bis[(1H-pyrrol-2-yl)-diazenyl] biphenyl) have been synthesised using modified Schiff and azo-coupling reactions. The new 2,2'-dipyrroles linked with conjugated aza-spacers have been evaluated as precursors of narrow band gap conducting polymers. Electrochemically synthesized poly(N,N'-bis-[1-(1H-pyrrol-2-yl)ethylidene]-hydrazine) displays a narrow band gap of just 0.7 eV, making it a suitable candidate for optoelectronic applications.

  • Role of nitric oxide during rotavirus infection.
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Journal of medical virology. - : Wiley. - 0146-6615 .- 1096-9071. ; 78:7, s. 979-85
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The pathophysiological mechanisms behind rotavirus-induced diarrhoea still remain incomplete. Current views suggest that the non-structural protein 4 (NSP4) of rotavirus and the enteric nervous system (ENS) participate in water secretion and diarrhoea. In the present work the role of nitric oxide (NO) in rotavirus infection and disease has been studied in vitro, mice and humans. Incubation of human intestinal epithelial cells (HT-29) with purified NSP4 but not with infectious virus produced NO2/NO3 accumulation in the incubation media. The NSP4-induced release of NO metabolites occurred within the first minutes after the addition of the toxin. Mice infected with murine rotavirus (strain EDIM) accumulated NO2/NO3 in the urine at the onset for diarrhoea. Following rotavirus infection, inducible nitric oxide synthetase (iNOS) mRNA was upregulated in ileum, but not in duodenum or jejunum of newborn pups within 5 days post-infection. A prospective clinical study including 46 children with acute rotavirus infection and age-matched controls concluded that rotavirus infection stimulates NO production during the course of the disease (P < 0.001). These observations identify NO as an important mediator of host responses during rotavirus infection.
