  • The veil as an object of right-wing populist politics : A comparative perspective of Turkey, Sweden, and France
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Identities. - 1070-289X .- 1547-3384. ; 29:4, s. 538-555
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article, we comparatively analyse radical right-wing parties' intervention into the veil debate in Turkey, Sweden, and France which are characterised by different understandings of legal and normative secularism. We explore the intersection of gender and religion in the dynamic formation of populist categories and how they can be mobilised differently along the vertical and the horizontal axes by the example of the veil. In all three countries we have analysed capitalise on gender, religiosity and secularity, and the veil is exploited in drawing boundaries between the People and non-People but also between the People and the Elites. In this way, the meanings attributed to the veil are used as a mechanism of exclusion and of drawing the boundaries through gendered narratives of who belongs to the People.

  • Traffic climate scale : Comparing samples from Turkey and Sweden
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: IATSS Research. - : Elsevier. - 0386-1112. ; 46:1, s. 130-137
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Traffic climate is a recent and one of the essential topics in traffic and transportation research. Various studies have examined the relations of traffic climate with driving outcomes such as accidents by using different versions of the Traffic Climate Scale (TCS). In a recent attempt, 16-items and 38-items versions of the TCS were examined in different countries. With respect to that, the present study aims to investigate the psychometric properties of 16-items and 38-items versions in samples from Turkey and Sweden and to test the traffic climate differences of these two countries. A total of 309 participants from Turkey and 357 participants from Sweden completed a questionnaire including a demographic information form and the TCS. Confirmatory factor analyses showed that the short TCS had better fit indexes with acceptable reliability. Moreover, the traffic system in Turkey was perceived to be more internally and externally demanding and less functional compared to the traffic system in Sweden. The results suggest that the short TCS is a reliable and user-friendly measurement to understand the perception of road users.

  • Bioinspired design of a polymer-based biohybrid sensor interface
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Sensors and actuators. B, Chemical. - : Elsevier BV. - 0925-4005 .- 1873-3077. ; 251, s. 674-682
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The key step in the construction of efficient and selective analytical separations or sensors is the design of the recognition interface. Biomimicry of the recognition features typically found in biological molecules, using amino acids, peptides and nucleic acids, provides plausible opportunities to integrate biological molecules or their active sites into a synthetic polymeric backbone. Given the basic role of functional amino acids in biorecognition, we focused on the synthesis of polymerizable amino acid derivatives and their incorporation into a polymer-based biohybrid interface to construct generic bioinspired analytical tools. We also utilized polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as a sacrificial polymer to adjust the porosity of these biohybrid interfaces. The surface morphologies of the interfaces on gold electrodes were characterized by using scanning electron (SEM) and atomic force (AFM) microscopies. The electrochemical behavior of the polymeric films was systematically investigated using differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) to demonstrate the high affinity of the biohybrid interfaces for Cu(II) ions. The presence of macropores also significantly improved the recognition performance of the interfaces while enhancing interactions between the target [Cu(II) ions] and the functional groups. As a final step, we showed the applicability of the proposed analytical platform to create a Cu(II) ion-mediated supramolecular self-assembly on a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) electrode surface in real time.

  • Searches for scalar leptoquarks in pp collisions at [Formula: see text] = 8 TeV with the ATLAS detector.
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044. ; 76
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Searches for pair-produced scalar leptoquarks are performed using 20 fb[Formula: see text] of proton-proton collision data provided by the LHC and recorded by the ATLAS detector at [Formula: see text] TeV. Events with two electrons (muons) and two or more jets in the final state are used to search for first (second)-generation leptoquarks. The results from two previously published ATLAS analyses are interpreted in terms of third-generation leptoquarks decaying to [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] final states. No statistically significant excess above the Standard Model expectation is observed in any channel and scalar leptoquarks are excluded at 95 % CL with masses up to [Formula: see text] 1050 GeV for first-generation leptoquarks, [Formula: see text] 1000 GeV for second-generation leptoquarks, [Formula: see text] 625 GeV for third-generation leptoquarks in the [Formula: see text] channel, and 200 [Formula: see text] 640 GeV in the [Formula: see text] channel.

    • Based on a brand experience survey done on global mobile phone brands, we have analysed how brand experiences impact brand loyalty and are associated to prior product selections. We have created two conceptual models after doing exploratory factor analysis (EFA) on data collected from Finland (N=468). Our findings indicate that brand experiences of mobile phone brands consist of intellectual, sensory, behavioural, and eco-friendliness related aspects, and that the affective dimension that has earlier been linked to brand experiences is in fact associated more with brand loyalty. Also the perception of eco-friendliness in the brand experience can have an impact on brand loyalty and it is reflected in the product selection. Thus we suggest that integrated marketing and innovation management concentrate on improving the emotions consumers have towards a brand and measure this dimension to track how the brand has succeeded to deliver intellectual, sensory, behavioural and eco-friendliness related brand experiences.

    • Both as researchers and professionals in the field of disability we make attempts to understand people’s life situations in different respects. We present research results in various media, where everyone can read about the life circumstances of a particular group or persons, and as professionals we intend to interpret people’s life situations for the purpose of rehabilitation plans, teaching activities, etc. The question we will address concerns the trustworthiness in understanding another person’s life. For instance, in the tradition of life-world phenomenological research, how is it possible to understand another person’s world? And, to make it even more difficult; how is it possible to understand the world of a person with functional or activity limitations, in this case a person who is blind? Within a life-world approach, this question is imperative. What are the possibilities, but also difficulties or limitations, in trying to understand a blind and a sighted person’s world respectively? From interpretative standpoint it is of great importance to find usable concepts in the ‘research communication arena’, but also to penetrate the perceptual ground for the language used. To answer these questions qualitative research is the preferred strategy to approach O&M practice, for instance when introducing new environments and orientation activities. In the presentation we will address these questions from the perspective of the researcher and the professional, but also from the perspective of our own experiences of blindness and normal vision. Here we will use our own experiences in trying to understand the world of blindness and sightness respectively.

    • Absorptive capacity, conceptualized as identifying, selecting and integrating useful knowledge from the environment into commercial applications, is a key capability for any organization, team or individual. While prior literature has made substantial advancement into the performance consequences of absorptive capacity, few studies have addressed what actually constitutes ACAP on a micro level. Thus, there exists a significant gap within the literature concerning the micro-foundations of ACAP. This study attempts to fill this gap by means of multiple case studies within the R&D organizations of three multinational engineering firms. Our findings show how the micro foundations of absorptive capacity are rooted in individual skills, roles and relationships.

  • Starch/Alkane Diol Materials: Unexpected Ultraporous Surfaces, Near-Isoporous Cores, and Films Moving on Water
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: ACS Omega. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 2470-1343. ; 5:44, s. 28863-28869
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to find alternative starch plasticizers to glycerol that yielded a less tacky material in high-moisture conditions without leading to starch crystallization. A range of glycerol films containing different potential plasticizers (linear alkane diols) were therefore produced, and it was shown that 1,3-propanediol, in combination with glycerol, was a possible solution to the problem. Several additional interesting features of the starch films were however also revealed. The larger diols, instead of showing plasticizing features, yielded a variety of unexpected structures and film properties. Films with 1,6-hexanediol and 1,7-heptanediol showed an ultraporous film surface and near-isoporous core. The most striking feature was that starch films with these two diols moved/rotated over the surface when placed on water, with no other stimulus than the interaction with water. Films with 1,8-octanediol and 1,10-decanediol did not show these features, but there was clear evidence of a structure with phase-separated crystallized diol in a starch matrix, as observed in high-resolution scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images.

  • Influence of ceramic waste powder on shear performance of environmentally friendly reinforced concrete beams
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - : Springer. - 2045-2322. ; 14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This investigation considered the usability of ceramic waste powder (CWP) in altered quantities in reinforced concrete beams (RCBs). In this way, it was aimed to reduce the environmental impacts of concrete by using CWP as a raw material in RCBs. 12 small-scale shear RCBs with the dimensions of 100 × 150 × 1000 mm were tested in this study. The variations of stirrups spacing and CWP ratio were examined in these specimens. The percentages of CWP by weight utilized in RCBs were 10%, 20%, and 30%, and stirrups spacings were adopted as 270 mm, 200 mm, and 160 mm. At the end of the study, it was determined that more than 10% CWP additive negatively affected the RCBs’ compressive strength. The load-carrying capacity reduced between 30.3% and 59.4% when CWP increased from 0% to 30% as compared to RCB with stirrups spacing of 270 mm without CWP. However, compared to RCB with stirrups spacings of 200 mm and 160 mm without CWP, there were decreases in the load-carrying capacity as 21.4%–54.3% and 18.6%–54.6%, respectively. While the CWP ratio increased, the specimens with 160 mm, 200 mm, and 270 mm stirrups spacings obtained a lower maximum load value. However, with the increase of the CWP ratio in the specimens with 160 mm stirrups spacing, RCBs reached the maximum load-carrying capacity at an earlier displacement value. When stirrups spacing was selected as 270 mm, it was observed that the maximum load-carrying capacity of RCBs reached at a similar displacement value as the CWP ratio increased. Besides, it was resulted that the bending stiffness of RCBs reduced as the quantity of CWP enhanced. The bending stiffness decreased by 29.1% to 66.4% in the specimens with 270 mm stirrups spacing, 36.3% to 20.2% with 200 mm stirrups spacing, and 10.3% to 36.9% with 160 mm stirrups spacing. As an implication of the experiments, the use of CWP up to 10% in RCBs was realized as an economical and environmental approach and is suggested. There is some evidence to report that making use of CWP may be considered to be ecologically benign. This is due to the fact that reusing CWP may significantly reduce CO2 emissions, save energy, and reduce total power consumption. Furthermore, the experimental results were compared to the analytical calculations.

  • On the Impact of Hardware Impairments on RIS-aided Localization
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: IEEE International Conference on Communications. - 1550-3607. ; 2022-May, s. 2846-2851
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigate a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided near-field localization system with single-antenna user equipment (UE) and base station (BS) under hardware impairments by considering a practical phase-dependent RIS amplitude variations model. To analyze the localization performance under the mismatch between the practical model and the ideal model with unit-amplitude RIS elements, we employ the misspecified Cramér-Rao bound (MCRB). Based on the MCRB derivation, the lower bound (LB) on the mean-squared error for estimation of UE position is evaluated and shown to converge to the MCRB at low signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs). Simulation results indicate more severe performance degradation due to the model misspecification with increasing SNR. In addition, the mismatched maximum likelihood (MML) estimator is derived and found to be tight to the LB in the high SNR regime. Finally, we observe that the model mismatch can lead to an order-of-magnitude localization performance loss at high SNRs.

  • Finding a new home through conversion : the ontological security of Iranians converting to Christianity in Sweden
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Religion, State and Society. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0963-7494 .- 1465-3974. ; 50:2, s. 224-239
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Extant scholarship on ontological security in sociology has focused on the significance of home as a source of security. In this article, I argue that when Iranian asylum-seeking converts lose faith in mainstream primary institutions (such as the public and political institutions formed and shaped by Iran's religious autocracy), they turn to Christianity to find a source of such significance. This conversion is a secondary institution that shields them from existential anxiety and homelessness, while the primary institution has become meaningless. The new home that this secondary institution offers increases their sense of ontological security and minimises their existential anxiety. Through conversion, they have become 'at home' in the secondary institution, and the self has been reinstitutionalised.

  • Determination of spin and parity of the Higgs boson in the [Formula: see text] decay channel with the ATLAS detector.
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044. ; 75:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Studies of the spin and parity quantum numbers of the Higgs boson in the [Formula: see text] final state are presented, based on proton-proton collision data collected by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb[Formula: see text] at a centre-of-mass energy of [Formula: see text] TeV. The Standard Model spin-parity [Formula: see text] hypothesis is compared with alternative hypotheses for both spin and CP. The case where the observed resonance is a mixture of the Standard-Model-like Higgs boson and CP-even ([Formula: see text]) or CP-odd ([Formula: see text]) Higgs boson in scenarios beyond the Standard Model is also studied. The data are found to be consistent with the Standard Model prediction and limits are placed on alternative spin and CP hypotheses, including CP mixing in different scenarios.

  • 2016
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044. ; 76
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Fiducial cross-sections for [Formula: see text] production with one or two additional b-jets are reported, using an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb[Formula: see text] of proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider, collected with the ATLAS detector. The cross-section times branching ratio for [Formula: see text] events with at least one additional b-jet is measured to be 950 [Formula: see text] 70 (stat.) [Formula: see text] (syst.) fb in the lepton-plus-jets channel and 50 [Formula: see text] 10 (stat.) [Formula: see text] (syst.) fb in the [Formula: see text] channel. The cross-section times branching ratio for events with at least two additional b-jets is measured to be 19.3 [Formula: see text] 3.5 (stat.) [Formula: see text] 5.7 (syst.) fb in the dilepton channel ([Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], and ee) using a method based on tight selection criteria, and 13.5 [Formula: see text] 3.3 (stat.) [Formula: see text] 3.6 (syst.) fb using a looser selection that allows the background normalisation to be extracted from data. The latter method also measures a value of 1.30 [Formula: see text] 0.33 (stat.) [Formula: see text] 0.28 (syst.)% for the ratio of [Formula: see text] production with two additional b-jets to [Formula: see text] production with any two additional jets. All measurements are in good agreement with recent theory predictions.

  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044. ; 75:9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A search for Higgs boson pair production [Formula: see text] is performed with 19.5 fb[Formula: see text] of proton-proton collision data at [Formula: see text] TeV, which were recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider in 2012. The decay products of each Higgs boson are reconstructed as a high-momentum [Formula: see text] system with either a pair of small-radius jets or a single large-radius jet, the latter exploiting jet substructure techniques and associated b-tagged track-jets. No evidence for resonant or non-resonant Higgs boson pair production is observed. The data are interpreted in the context of the Randall-Sundrum model with a warped extra dimension as well as the two-Higgs-doublet model. An upper limit on the cross-section for [Formula: see text] of 3.2 (2.3) fb is set for a Kaluza-Klein graviton [Formula: see text] mass of 1.0 (1.5) TeV, at the 95 % confidence level. The search for non-resonant Standard Model hh production sets an observed 95 % confidence level upper limit on the production cross-section [Formula: see text] of 202 fb, compared to a Standard Model prediction of [Formula: see text] fb.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The decays [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] are studied with the ATLAS detector at the LHC using a dataset corresponding to integrated luminosities of 4.9 and 20.6 fb[Formula: see text] of pp collisions collected at centre-of-mass energies [Formula: see text] TeV and 8 TeV, respectively. Signal candidates are identified through [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] decays. With a two-dimensional likelihood fit involving the [Formula: see text] reconstructed invariant mass and an angle between the [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] candidate momenta in the muon pair rest frame, the yields of [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text], and the transverse polarisation fraction in [Formula: see text] decay are measured. The transverse polarisation fraction is determined to be [Formula: see text], and the derived ratio of the branching fractions of the two modes is [Formula: see text], where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic. Finally, a sample of [Formula: see text] decays is used to derive the ratios of branching fractions [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text], where the third error corresponds to the uncertainty of the branching fraction of [Formula: see text] decay. The available theoretical predictions are generally consistent with the measurement.

  • Role of Hydrogen Bonding in Wheat Gluten Protein Systems Plasticized with Glycerol and Water
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Polymer. - : Elsevier BV. - 0032-3861 .- 1873-2291. ; 232, s. 124149-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Many biopolymers are stiff and brittle and require plasticizers. To optimize the choice and amount of plasticizer, the mechanisms behind plasticization need to be understood. For polar biopolymers, such as polysaccharides and proteins, plasticization depends to a large extent on the hydrogen bond network. In this study, glycerol-plasticized protein systems based on wheat gluten were investigated, in combination with the effects of water. The methodology was based on a combination of mechanical tests and molecular dynamics simulations (MD). The simulations accurately predicted the glycerol content where the experimental depression in glass transition temperature (Tg) occurred (between 20 and 30 wt.% plasticizer). They also predicted the strong water-induced depression in Tg. Detailed analysis revealed that in the dry system, the main effect of glycerol was to break protein-protein hydrogen bonds. In the moist system, glycerol was partly outcompeted by water in forming hydrogen bonds with the protein, making the glycerol plasticizer less effective than in dry conditions. These results show that MD can successfully predict the plasticizer concentration at which the onset of efficient plasticization occurs. MD can therefore be an important tool for understanding plasticizer mechanisms, even in a complex system, on a level of detail that is impossible with experiments.

  • Ingår i: Journal of Psycholinguistic Research. - : Springer. - 0090-6905 .- 1573-6555. ; 52:6, s. 2405-2427
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It has been observed that Turkish university students suffer in L2 writing when they lack background knowledge about the writing topic. Triggered by this observation, this study intended to explore effectiveness of content-schemata activation for scaffolding Turkish students in their challenging L2 writing practices. Study participants, students studying at an English-medium university in Turkey, were asked to write an essay on a specific topic at the beginning of the week before participating in any activities and then they were asked to write a second essay on the same topic after being engaged in various skills activities designed to activate their content-schemata. The same procedure was repeated for seven weeks with a different topic each week. To gather data, students' first and second essays were compared and students' and teachers' perceptions regarding their experiences in English writing classes were elicited through questionnaires. As study findings reveal that content-schemata activation leads to the production of better essays in terms of content and that both students and teachers are positive about the use of skills activities for idea generation prior to essay writing, integration of activities that would activate students' content-schemata into the language curriculum in other ESL/EFL educational contexts is highly recommended.

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: 61st IEEE Conference on Decision and Control (CDC), 2022.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Underwater robotic exploration missions typically involve traveling long distances without any human contact. The robots that go on such missions risk getting damaged by the unknown environment, accruing great costs and missed opportunities. Thus it is important for the robot to be able to accommodate unknown changes to its dynamics as much as possible and attempt to finish the given mission, or at the very least move itself to a retrievable position. In this paper, we show how we can detect physical changes to the robot reliably (79\% on real robot data) and then incorporate these changes through adapting the model to the data followed by automated control redesign. We adopt a piecewise-affine (PWA) modelling of the dynamics that is well suited for low data regime learning of the dynamics and provides a structure for computationally efficient control synthesis. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method on a combination of real robot data and simulated scenarios.

  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of 2021 IEEE International Conference on Safety, Security, and Rescue Robotics (SSRR), October 25-27 2021, New York, USA..
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Area coverage and robot navigation are two  important research fields within robotics. However, their intersection has received limited attention. In coverage problems, perfect navigation is often assumed, and in robot navigation, the focus is often to minimize the localization error while traveling a given trajectory. The need for integration of the two becomes clear in environments with very sparse features or landmarks, for example when an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) is to search the seafloor for dangerous objects, such as mines. The potential consequences of missing a mine due to navigation errors can be catastrophic. If the localization error is large, a trajectory that was designed to guarantee complete coverage might have missed significant parts of the area. Thus, the coverage trajectory must be planned with the navigation performance in mind, applying a combination of using large enough planned overlaps of sensor footprints to account for the position uncertainty, and reducing this uncertainty by re-visiting the known sparse landmarks. In this paper we compute trajectories that guarantee coverage for a given area under assumptions on worst case localization error growth. We further more compute upper bounds for how large areas can be covered using common coverage patterns and a single landmark, which leads to bounds on how sparse the landmarks can be in the regions to be covered.

  • Frequent intratype neutralization by plasma immunoglobulin A identified in HIV-2 infection.
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: AIDS Research and Human Retroviruses. - 1931-8405. ; 29:3, s. 470-478
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Human immunodeficiency virus type 2 (HIV-2) is less transmissible and less pathogenic compared to HIV-1 and, when matched for CD4+ T cell count, the plasma viral load in HIV-2 infected individuals is approximately one log lower than in HIV-1 infected individuals. The explanation for these observations is elusive, but differences in virus controlling immunity generated in the two infections may be contributing factors. In the present study, we investigated neutralization by immunoglobulin A (IgA), in parallel with IgG, purified from plasma of HIV-1, HIV-2 and HIV-1/HIV-2 dually (HIV-D)-infected individuals. Neutralization was analyzed against HIV-1 and HIV-2 isolates using a plaque reduction assay. In HIV-2 infection, intratype-specific neutralization by IgA was frequently detected, although at a lesser magnitude then the corresponding IgG neutralizing titers. In contrast, neutralization by IgA could rarely be demonstrated in HIV-1 infection despite similar plasma IgA levels in both infections. In addition, IgA and IgG of HIV-D plasma neutralized the HIV-2 isolate more potently than the HIV-1 isolate, suggesting that the difference between neutralizing activity of plasma IgA and IgG depends on the virus itself. Taken together, these findings suggest that both IgA and IgG adds to the potent intratype neutralizing activity detected in HIV-2 plasma, which may contribute to virus control in HIV-2 infection.

  • Inhibition of Thrombin Abrogates the Instant Blood-Mediated Inflammatory Reaction Triggered by Isolated Human Islets : Possible application of the thrombin inhibitor melagatran in clinical islet transplantation
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Diabetes. - : American Diabetes Association. - 0012-1797 .- 1939-327X. ; 51:6, s. 1779-1784
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A thrombotic/inflammatory reaction is elicited when isolated islets of Langerhans come in contact with ABO-compatible blood. The detrimental effects of this instant blood-mediated inflammatory reaction (IBMIR) provide a reasonable explanation for the observation that an unexpectedly high number of islets, from several donors, are needed to produce normoglycemia in transplant patients with type 1 diabetes. In this study, the hypothesis that a specific thrombin inhibitor, Melagatran, could reduce IBMIR in an in vitro model in which human islets are exposed to ABO-compatible blood was tested. The administration of Melagatran abrogated IBMIR dose-dependently. Islets exposed to blood, in the absence or presence of 0.4 μmol/l Melagatran, exhibited a loss of integrity and were found to be trapped in macroscopic clots containing platelets and CD11b+ leukocytes. At concentrations from 1 to 10 μmol/l, Melagatran inhibited both coagulation and complement activation. Also, platelet and leukocyte activation and consumption were decreased. Islet morphology was maintained with almost no platelets adhering to the surface, and infiltration by CD11b+ leukocytes was considerably reduced. In conclusion, Melagatran significantly reduced IBMIR in this model system. This protective effect indicates that thrombin plays a pivotal role in IBMIR and suggests that thrombin inhibition can improve the outcome of clinical islet transplantation.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article introduces an agent-based simulation model representing the dynamic processes of cooperative R&D in the manufacturing sector of South Korea. Firms’ behaviors were defined according to empirical findings on a data set from the internationally standardized Korean Innovation Survey in 2005. Simulation algorithms and parameters were defined based on the determinants of firms’ likelihood to participate in cooperation with other firms when conducting innovation activities. The calibration process was conducted to the point where artificially generated scenarios were equivalent to the one observed in the real world. The aim of this simulation game was to create a basic implementation that could be extended to test different policies strategies in order to observe sector responses (including cross-sector spillovers) when promoting cooperative innovation. Based on the evaluation of simulated research collaboration data, sector responses to strategies concerning government intervention in R&D of the firms can now be assessed.

    • This study models individual characteristics, leader-member exchange, and organizational support in relationship to individual innovativeness in highly complex research and development (R&D) settings. The paper reports on a survey of 166 R&D team members, 43 team leaders, and 10 department managers in five Swedish industrial organizations. Innovative behavior was measured using quantitative indicators (e.g., new patent applications, new products, and scientific and other publications) and team leaders’ ratings. Personal initiative predicted individual innovative behavior, while intrinsic motivation and leadership (conceptualized by leader-member exchange theory) did not. A mediating effect was found where leader-member exchange was associated with innovation through the personal initiative of team members. Organizational support moderated the relationship between leader-member exchange and individuals’ personal initiative. High organizational support strengthened the relationship.
